When the sky package deal ended (mum had died so nothing could be done about renewing the package).
I decided to go with Vodafone. Went into one of their stores near me. The salesman was very patient with this person, me, who is in their mid-60's. He wasn't one of these pushy sales people. I happily signed the contract and was looking forward to an engineer coming round to set everything up.
A few days later I get an e-mail from them saying they would be sending the router by courier. They also mentioned that they wouldn't need to send an engineer round to my home. That was the start of the first of my worries. I had never set up the internet at home before. The Router arrived on time and in perfect condition, so no problems with that. Was told when the connection would go "live". So that morning I worke up early, set up everything and tried to log on. It wouldn't accept the password. It kept telling me to look at their website if I had any problems. How can I do that if I don't have "internet". Obviously it ment going to coffee shops/libraries with free wi-fi. But again you can't then test out the router and/or phone line as you out of the house. I don't have data on my mobile, so that wasn't an option either.
Made a complaint to Vodafone, who to their credit replied with an hour or two. They said they would send an engineer this morning (between 8am-1pm). I waited until 2.20pm. No one turned up, no phone calls. Just made another complint to them via email. But i'm now wondering if they aren't taking complaints about them very seriously. They've got my money, why should tthey care? (I know I used to think people were cynical when they said that, but now I'm in that position I'm starting to understand why they said that).
People of my age might have been using the internet for a couple of decades, but that doesn't make us an expect in working out why something doesn't work. All the time my mum changed her isp, they always sent an engineer, and if there was a problem they could fix it there and then, not leave it for us to "set up to fail".
Recommendation: Try and find out from friends and family of their ISP experience of company
