On September 18, I took my car to Halfords Iverson Autocentre for free car checks as part of Halfords Motoring Club and some repairs were highlighted, such as tyres and brake discs.
On September 27, a Halfords Mobile Expert technician came to replace three tyres and showed me that two bolts on the front passenger side wheel were not secure and the wheel was loose. He subsequently found that the bolts were cross-threaded, had been “gunned in” and the studs were damaged. He also noticed that one of the bolts had a black cross written on it, suggesting it was faulty but I do not know who did this.
The only previous time the wheels had been taken off were at Halfords Iverson when the car checks were conducted. Previous to that, it was again at Halfords Iverson for the car's MOT last year. He told me that the car was not roadworthy and should not have left the Autocentre in that condition as the wheel could have come off at any time.
The mobile technician said he wrote a detailed report for the job outlining the damage and asked me to sign a disclaimer. I showed him the vehicle health report and photos provided by Halfords and he pointed out that only one side of the car had a photo of the brake discs, that of the front wheel on the driver’s side and none of the passenger wheel, even though both sides were recommended to be renewed.
When I first called Halfords Garage Customer Service on September 28, I was told that I would have to hire a recovery vehicle to take my car to Halfords Iverson to be checked and repaired. I replied that I was not prepared to do that as the damage was caused by Halfords and it should be the responsibility of Halfords to resolve. I referred to Consumer Rights Act 2015, Section 9, “Services must be performed with reasonable care and skill”, arguing that on the facts above, Halfords has not met those obligations and provided poor quality and dangerous service.
A senior manager was supposed to call me back in 24-48 hours but no one did, so I contacted Halfords via Chat and my complaint was escalated to a specialist team, who would call me within 7 working days. I called Customer Service again on the 7th day and was told that someone should call me before the day’s end, and to send an email to Customer Service explaining my situation, which I did. No one called me back.
