I booked an MOT with Halfords in Inverness for today 22 July at 11am.
When I arrived I was told all bookings for today had been cancelled as the MOT engineer is on holiday and not back until the beginning of August.
The new appointment offered was for 5 August but my MOT expires on 8 August.
The assistant who cancelled and re-arranged the bookings said my booking wasn’t showing and said this would have been because I booked online.
I asked why I had received so many booking reminders by text. The only answer was because I had booked online.
Then followed a few minutes of me being very upset and her being very apologetic.
Here are some facts.
I booked online and received a booking and payment acknowledgement by email on 25 June.
Thereafter I received several text reminders. I can’t tell you how many as I deleted them as they arrived- there’s only so many times you can be told when your appointment is!
But the last two were yesterday - a day before my supposed appointment.
Halfords in Inverness is a 20 mile journey. I have my car serviced a few miles from where I live, at McConechy’s which is part of Halfords but it can’t offer MOTs.
Desired outcome: I would like an apology and to know how best to book next time

That is unacceptable on their part and completely avoidable. Here is the practical path: call Halfords customer service directly (not the store) and give them your online booking reference and the texts you received. Ask them to pull the digital record of your booking and confirm that it existed. Since you have a valid booking confirmation, they should either prioritize your MOT at another nearby Halfords location or cover the cost of an MOT at an independent garage of your choice. Also, request compensation for your wasted travel time and fuel. If they do not help, escalate to Halfords' regional manager and mention you will take your case to the Motor Ombudsman. You have the proof, so do not accept another excuse.
