I am writing with some very serious concerns regarding an interaction I had at the Food Basocs located at 280 Harwood S in Ajax, Ontario on Saturday April 18th.
At around 230 that afternoon I stopped at my regular grocery store after a vigil for Gaza, as I have done regularly since June of 2025 when the vigils began. I have an energy limiting disability and as such use a mobility aid and try to combine errands as much as possible. This means that my vigil materials were with me but not set up for display, and no different than any of the previous 50+ times I have done some shopping post vigil. Shortly after I had found a basket and then begun my shopping, I was approached by security who apologized while telling me he had been instructed to remove me from the store. I was confused, asked if it was about the signs. Security told me he had been instructed to tell me to leave the store and not come in with my walker. Obviously that was a shocking request and the guard confirmed that was the instructions. I asked if it was possible to speak with the manager, as I was happy to leave my signs in the care of security while I shopped but I of course would not be comfortable leaving my expensive mobility device outside, nor was it acceptable to say I can not take a mobility device inside. The manager had refused to talk to me.
Once I was outside I stood leaning against the nearest wall as I was experiencing a dysautonomia crash, and I was trying to communicate with my partner who is out of town to help reach the manager so I can get my shopping done and get home to recover. Unfortunately he was also told explicitly that I could not come in with my walker. My partner tried to address the signs as the problem, at which point the manager ended the call.
As of FRI APR 24 I have yet to recieve any response from any level of Food Basics or Metro.
