This scam seems to be marching on. I too have seen a charge in my credit card account to EC VEHICLE RENTAL of Leicester. I rented a car from arguscarhire.com ( a U k car brokerage) for a week-end. The cost was about £40 stg. and paid for this using my bank debit card - not by credit card. Upon arrival in Bristol Airport my wife & I were directed to the Europcar Rental Desk and it was there that we had to produce the credit card to cover uninsured damage, unreplaced fuel, etc. There was no damage done to the car. Like some other complainants we had no communication whatsoever from either Argus or Europcar - other than invitations from Argus to do business with them again!

At least I have the opportunity not to pay the charges as my credit card bill is not due for another few days. I will be formally querying the transaction with my credit card company on Monday morning. I am not sure who can put a stop to this behaviour but it is time the car-hire companies got together and established a code of conduct to which all car-hire companies would subscribe and be identified by means of some identifiable logo on car-hire websites.

After 3 weeks of waiting time nobody from Alamo contacted me except to tell me that they are sending my request from a department to the other, first from the Central to the International team, then from the International to the UK Local offices. That last one happened the 2nd of October almost two weeks ago.
In the meantime I have no explanation about why I have been overcharged at the end of the rental period when the booking was prepaid and my money is on their hands.
Reading into the Internet is really scaring the amount of customers like me that are overcharged without reason or explanation:
    - nonexistent damages on the car
    - extra insurances not requested and even refused
    - empty fuel deposit when it wasn't
Queue of claims is long and worldwide, just to raise some examples, in these three links there are almost 500 cases:
    - http://europcar.pissedconsumer.com/
    - http://alamo.pissedconsumer.com/
Is there any Consum Authority that can take that, investigate and conduct the needed legal actions to solve all this cases?
NOT TO SAY: Never use EUROPCAR / ALAMO / NATIONAL again!!!

Hello, my name is Jorge Mir, confirmation number [protected]
I rented a car from Alamo car rental al Gatwick airport, from Aug 23 to Sep 13 using Cardelmar who charged the total amount of the reservation, so it was pre-paid completely. I realized yesterday that a charge of 228 € was done on my credit card by EC VEHICLE RENTAL LEICESTER HQ without notice, notification or explanation about it, the same day of the drop off.
When we picked up the car at Gatwick, Europcar blocked about 555 € on my credit card, the car had no damages and the fuel deposit was full. When we drop off the car, the clerk revised it: no damages, full deposit, ... in his words: "everything perfect" and he proceed to manage the unblock of the money on my credit card.
So, I cannot understand where that other charge of 228 € comes from, it looks as a mistake and I have started actions to get it fixed (sending emails to Alamo, Cardelmar an notifying my bank about this unknown charge), but after reading all your posts it looks more like a usual fraud. How should I proceed?

I found all of these comments after searching online for issues with EC Vehicle Rental. I agree with other posts, that this is criminal what is happening. We rented a car for a month, picked it up 18th Aug and realised the same day there was a charge for £11.66 per day for extra insurance. As we never agreed to this we called Alamo immediately THE SAME DAY and we're assured it would be rectified and we had nothing to worry about. On return of the car, exactly as received and full of petrol we have now been charged an additional £400!!! Absolutely diabolical that we have been charged more for an insurance we asked to be removed than we were charged for a months car rental?!? How can Alamo even think that this is ok?!?! I'm disgusted and will be doing everything required to get my money back...

Hello, My name is Tracy Lemieux. confirmation number [protected]

I rented a car from the Almo car rental at Manchester airport. from Aug 26 and it was dropped off on September 3rd.
It was a pre paid for rental car. I had already paid $307.01 Canadian with the booking ref of [protected]
I would like to know why I was charged a further $777.01 on my master card when returning home. I took out the insurance for the 8 days and would have paid for a whole tank of GAS as I returned it empty.
Just before signing the contract for the insurance, the clerk reassured me that I would be getting back half of the cost. But I was billed on the day that I returned the car, for more than the car insurance and gas.
Further more I have been trying for two weeks now to call the Car Hire in Manchester and the EC office in Leicester, The only time I was able to get through, they could not help me and gave me a number of customer service which was not the correct number. So please help me to receive the deposit back and also send me a correct number where these problems can be discussed.

    Thank you Tracy Lemieux

Rental Agreement [protected] and Bus Lane Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) PCN no. BN80629731
EUROPCAR MAKE A VERY SERIUOS MISTAKE
I have rent a car from 12-14 July 2014, after I back to Hong Kong, and in August, I received an Traffic Violation invoice from Alamo regarding a £36 handing charge for the Bus Lane Penalty Charge from Bath and North East Somerset Council, but the credit card number debit shown on the Alamo invoice is not my credit card number, because I have one credit card only, so I know this card number is not mine. Alamo office must make a mistake, so I email to Alamo customer service, they insist this card number 54**********5290 is my credit card number, actually my credit card number is 54********2908. After three to four times arguments, they still insisted they are correct. Why I said they are wrong, because after I return the car, I found an additional charge of around £100 was debit to my credit card 54********2908, and I email to them query for such additional charge, subsequently they credit about £50 to my credit card 54********2908. So from these debit and credit transactions, in their system, my credit card number is 54********2908 and not 54**********5290, But they insisted they are correct.
I write this because I want all guy to know that the internal system of ALAMO is quite confuse and disorder. I hope ALAMO can give me an explanation on my credit card number. Thanks.

I had the same issue. Prepaid rental at Gatwick Airport, returned the car with a full tank of petrol, no damages and got the all clear from the guy when I did the return. I received my Mastercard statement and found out they charged me $67 on the day of the return. This company is a bunch of fraudsters and I would advise anyone who wants to hire a car to stay clear of this company. They are obviously playing the game that the majority of people will turn a blind eye to this practice and therefore it works outs as a nice extra income stream/scam for their businesses. Shame on Alamo/EC Vehicle rental, you guys need to be convicted of fraud. Think I will make a nice little video and post it on utube and also put something on Trip Advisor to spread the word to stay clear of this company and their fraudulent practices. Unhappy Canadian.

    Hi guys

Ive had the same issue as everyone else, I have contacted Europa car to find out about the additional charges which are as follows

    vehicle hire charge £136.00
EC VEHICLE RENTAL CHARGE - £75.45
charged for going over the 600 mile limit £0.10p per mile
charged for windscreen and tires accidental damage
add VAT to all of that - total £75.45
Europacar have confirmed that EC vehicle rental is part of their company and that is what the £75.45 charge was.

I rented a car from 3-5 August 2014. The car was prepaid and I paid an extra 21 pounds on the spot for extra insurance. Later on I found out that they had taken 101 pounds of my credit card account instead of 21 pounds. I'm still trying to get my money back.

have just return back from holiday in the UK and hiring a car from Alamo the
entire period and paid up front when booking online. I have just reviewed my
credit statement and have an extra charge of £504 removed and another
transaction £70.18 the same day. Looking through previous complains this is criminal
activity on a grand scale if you take into consideration customers
out there that are unaware of there finances. This needs to be investigated by

I have just checked my credit card charges and I also have a pending charge from EC Vehicle Rental. I prepaid my rental car for pick up in Stirling UK on Aug 17 2014. I have until Aug 24 2014 to return the car. I have no idea why I am being charged this fee. I am contacting my CHASE Account to dispute the charge. This also was an Alamo rental.

Their seems to reoccurring theme here!
I have had the same issue with Alamo when booking through rentalcars.com, booking confirmation below, pick up from Gatwick South.

Booking Ref. [protected] 8th July 2014
    Hire Charge DKK757.20 Pre Paid
Damage Excess Refund DKK280.50 Pre Paid
    Credit Card Charge DKK0.00 None
    Amount Paid DKK1037.70
    Total DKK1037.70

After returning my car 10th July and everything being confirmed as OK, my credit card is then charged DKK 1, 601.08 by EC Vehicle Rental, I have no idea who EC Vehicle Rental are. I am waiting from a response rentalcars.com but does anybody now who EC Vehicle Rental are?

I took a hire car back to Alamo car rental at the car hire village at Manchester Airport on Monday 28th July. The operative was too busy to check the car over but assured me I would receive an email regard the rental. The car was as I received it 5/6 days earlier with a tank full of petrol. Two days later my credit card was debited £32.30 without any notice to me. I had prepaid damage excess refund through Rentalcars.com. If this is not resolved in the next couple of days I will be taking the matter to BVRLA's reconciliation service and Trading Standards. I shall certainly not be hiring a car from these companies again.

I also have received this erroneous charge on my credit card for a vehicle which was rented between the 8th & 14th July. The car was returned with a full tank of fuel and the attendant confirmed in same condition as rented. Upon return home to Hong Kong an additional charge of HK$ 4939.02 / GBP 400 was charged to my account by EC VEHICLE RENTAL LEICESTER HQ GB.
This is disgraceful, I too have asked my credit card company to launch an investigation how can Alamo get away with this theft!

Same thing for me. I rented on the 24th June from Stansted Airport returning to Manchester Airport on the 10th July 2014.
Full tank of petrol and no damage, i had also paid excess cover to Car Del Mar who were the middle man for Alamo. My card has been debited 55 pounds. I have contacted my credit card company who have launched an investigation. How can they get away with this?

Rented a car through rentalcars.com in glasgow supplied by Alamo from July 1 to 16.
Returned car, told it was fine after inspection.
noticed charge on credit card due to EC VEHICLE RENTAL LEICESTER HQ although i already paid for car.
Random charges like this without explanation are not good enough and create a sense
    Of mistrust.
I've used Alamo before without problem but this latest experience is off putting and when so many others are complaining it appears that the company needs to address their strategy. rather than just resolve my complaint i'm sure the renters on this site would like to know what the plan is for the future

Rentalcar has responded to and resolved my complain. Extra charges did occur due to the additional insurance coverage signed on car collection day (19/05/2014).

However, due to double payment of insurance, Rentalcar has agreed to refund me a total of £37.40 on 15/07/2014.

    Summary of case
    30/04/2014 01/05/2014 RENTALCARS.COM MANCHESTER MYR 504.90 (£ 89.63)
    23/05/2014 27/05/2014 EC VEHICLE RENTAL LEICESTER HQ MYR 664.48 (£ 119.97)
    15/07/2014 Refund £37.40

The case is considered closed. I'm satisfied with the refund and the extra charges made. Many thanks to complaintsboard.com and rentalcars.com.

I wish I had known there has been numerous cases where unexplained charges have been deducted so I could have saved myself from unnecessary stress dealing with Alamo. I have rented a car from Alamo through Lastminute.com in Guildford, but a day after my charges were taken from the credit card, an unexplained 630.34 pounds (!!!) was deducted. I had the all clear from the agent upon returning the car with full tank and there has been no communication from Alamo, so I do not understand this charge at all. We travel extensively and Alamo/ Europecar will be off my list of hiring cars if this incident cannot be sorted.

I recently rented a car in the UK. I booked a small car on May 1st through rentalcars.com at a cost if $272 Cad to be picked up at Heathrow on May 3rd. After a 4 hour delay at my connection, a red eye flight and a 45 minute wait at National, I was very tired, and didn't really take in the fact that a) they were now talking £ not $, and that slapping all the extra airport and London tax plus liability insurance et al, I would now be paying more than double the quoted amount. Not only that but, on checking my statement today, I find I'd already paid the $272 quoted online, plus £338 (around $640) when I took the car back. It's 10 days since I returned the car and I have not received anything back. All in all, what was quoted online as being $272 ended up costing me $906!!! That's more than triple the cost. When I went to Hawaii at Xmas I ordered 4 cars online and all were the prices quoted! No extras, no hidden airport taxes, no insurance ($19 extra on my Canadian insurance for almost 4 weeks), no extra charges going out. Right now I'm not a happy camper especially as I have to phone international to get it sorted!

Iv just been stung by Alamo for an extra £345 for my 12 days i rented the car with no explanation. im gutted i never read this website beforehand. im in the process of contacting BBC watchdog and so far they seem very interested in the story so hopefully can get the company named and shamed on national tv. I've just been advised by our bank that EC Vehicle Rentals have attempted to take AUD174 from our account overnight. We rented from them in Islington last November, paid in advance and were told that everything was OK when we returned the car in Bath. I'm glad that the bank declined the transaction.

Further to my post re Bristol Airport Alamo/Europcar. I had a reply to my e-mail to them . They are alleging £129.91 taken from my card was for damage to wall of a rear tyre and suggesting they could have charged me more so it seems I should be grateful!. They claim the damage wasn't noticed immediately because it was raining - I say it was not raining when I left it and the returns guy went round it in my presence so if it was there he would have seen it. I say I saw someone driving it around the car park as I was leaving in another hire car from a different company. I suggested that once they took over the car and drove it away any unreported/un-noticed damage should be down to them as it would be for me if I took possession of it and didn't notice something. It seems it's a one way street as far as they are concerned. I don't notice damage then I'm responsible, they don't notice damage then I'm still responsible. Anyway, lesson learned, thank you Alamo/Europcar. We now know what you think of your customers - we're just dumb cash cows who can pay for anything and everything you say after the event with no comeback on you. No one likes being ripped off so here's some comeback from me. Make your own minds up about this company people, we on this thread can't all be wrong. I suggest you use a different company, Alamo/Europcar aren't the only ones available.

I also have been stung by Alamo. I rented the care from Liverpool Airport 6 Dec, returning it with a full tank of petrol to Manchester airport 9 Dec 2013, with a cost of £89.59. Now, like many before me I have seen another transaction on my Credit Card to the sum of £55 taken out by EC Vehicle Rental on 10th December I don't know what this charge is for. There has been no communication nor no explanation for this transaction. Is this legal for this company to act in the manner it is doing ? I will email them to understand why this happened

Here's another one. I rented a car from Bristol airport through an on-line agent (Atlas Choice) from 30th December 13 to 8th January 14 . The company they contracted was Alamo, now part of Europcar. As I had bought excess cover via the on-line agent they swiped my credit card before I took the car. Car was fine and I returned it on time, full tank and in daylight. Their guy looked it over, pronounced it was Ok and I left it with him. I later found £129.91 had been taken from my account by EC (which is Europcar) Vehicle rental, Leicester. I have received no communication from them giving a reason for this charge. I e-mailed them (Incidentally their e-mail address on the paperwork supplied with the car is misprinted - deliberately?). An automatic reply promised a response within 10 working days. I got three invoices e-mailed to me. Two were for £0.00 so pointless, one was for £129.91 quoting unspecified damage. I have still not had the courtesy of a reply to my questions requesting they specify the alleged damage, provide me with evidence of the damage and why it was not pointed out on the return of the car. Even if they were justified in taking this amount I have been provided with no way to claim it on my excess insurance. I never had this sort of thing with Alamo before they were taken over. There are two other companies in Bristol airport - Hertz and Avis/Budget so you can avoid this bunch of cowboys and use a professional company instead. It is also open to me to complain to the local trading standards authority which I'm preparing to do, maybe if enough of us do the same they'll learn they can't treat customers like this.

I have also been a victim of this. I rented a car on a recent visit to the UK then saw that I had a charge of almost $350 against my credit card. On investigation by both myself and my bank found this charge had been taken by Alamo for alleged damage to the vehicle. The vehicle was damage free when I returned it. And I have photographs to prove it however Alamo say not. I suspect the small scratch on the rear need the boot was caused by whoever takes the vehicles for valeting on their return. Alamo will not listen to me nor will h they refund or explain why this charge was taken by what at the time was an unknown company to me...Beware and stay away the only satisfaction I have is knowing that I will never rent from them again.

16.12.13 My daughter has not even hired a car while in Europe and her MasterCard travel cash card has been cleaned out with charges of 323.00 GPB. Even though she contacted MasterCard to advise fraudulent transaction on her account was pending and she submitted a Disputed Transaction Form they still settled the payment the next day, but wouldn't let her get money out to buy food, I tried phoning EC Vehicle Rental from website phone number but does not connect.

    Ditto!
Rented a car from Woodford Green Europcar on 26th October. Check CC statement to find it's been charged £67.60 to EC Vehicle Rental Leicester. No communication or explanation. Especially galling after I was told when returning the vehicle that I'd have nothing extra to pay.

Same thing with us. We rented a car on 19th October and on 20 th October charges of £250 and £777 appeared on our statement from EC Car rental. We rented the car for part of a day from Manchester Airport went only to The Trafford Centre where it was parked for a few hours. I returned the car, putting petrol in it, and the guy said it was fine. I always check before and after renting after getting stung for damage I didn't do in Portugal. There was no damage beyond the small scratches already noted on the rental. How can a company take such large sums of money with no explanation? Is this a localised fraud? Who knows? Rental Cars have told us they will get back to us within a month! Amazing took no more than a few hours to charge £1027 but a month to investigate.
