Taxes and Additional Charges
I am on Suburban's Budget Payment Plan. Because of the unseasonably warm winters we have had over the past couple of years, I have not needed a propane delivery. On the 18th of January, I did receive a top-up of propane. When I got the bill, I almost crapped my pants! On top of the usual sales tax, municipal tax, and transportation surcharges, I am also being charged a $9.62 Safety Practices and Training Fee, which also has sales and municipal taxes applied. The Safety Practices and Training Fee is charged so that Suburban can recoup the inspection fees for their vehicles and facilities, as well as costs for training their employees and associated testing. So, for a 28.7 gallon tank top-up, I am paying $22.38 in taxes and fees...What a rip-off!
Rip Off rates
This Company Charges outrageous rates and fees 33% of the bill is fees and regulatory rates. Sending disconnect notices for bills that are less than half of your deposit. I called and was told pay the bill or we will disconnect and that my deposit doesn't matter untill I leave my apartment. It doesn't count against your bill. I can't switch companies because the whole complex is service by them. my deposit is Five times my monthly usage. CROOKS!

Sburban propane installed a 100 gal propane tank
at my property without doing a pressure test on the sysyem.
they say that they are known for there 24 hour customer service. but they charge a arm and leg for it. I am on ssi, freezing my but off, because there customer service is charging me $3.75 a gallon for propane. Ther are a crule, and make money off of old elderly people on ssi.
I happen to know that SP only charges per usuage and they DO NOT charge 5x for a deposit its based solely on credi up to a $250.00 max deposit!
DS
In order to hook up a 100 gallon tank, once the system has been disconnected, a pressure test or leak test must be done. You are required to be there in order for them to perform a test. they are required to document the test and you must sign off on the document that they did this test.
I just got notice that my tank rental was going from $40 a year to $200 a year. Outrageous! That's a 500% increase from one year to the next. The excuse they give is metal costs are up. My tank is already built!
Jason, keep your pitty comment to yourself!
I agree with you Grandma, I have been on a budget plan for 12 years now, and never a problem with suburban. Now they want me to pay the whole amount, or my tank will not get filled. I was never warned about the difference.
Online Bill pay
The online bill pay system for this company is antiquated. Their web-site (which looks like it was built in the 90's) can not be set to pay off your balance every month. The site cant even tell you what your balance IS. You have to get the paper bill (the only one I receive any more) and log onto their site every month to pay your bill. I don't have a single other bill that works like this.
They're pretty glib about it on the phone too. They know that the system is outdated, but told me I should feel lucky they had online bill pay at all.

Unethical Price Gouging
DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THESE CRIMINALS, you will be sorry. They change the rate for fuel as desired, always 30-80% higher than honest propane companies. They can deliver propane against your will, then gouge you. $4-6 a gallon. They will add late charges after altering the term of your agreement. If you complain, they will retaliate.
See all the other comments against Suburban Propane all over the Internet - class action lawsuits and disgusted customers. AVOID AT ALL COST.
I absolutely agree. I just changed to propane heat and I don't plan on renewing this contract. The additional cost is truly ridiculous. MD
Deceptions, price gouging etc
Reviewing all complaints I have found online, I agree and have been victimized along with so many others. I have argued with them for years over their pricing (secretive), charging "minimum" when an unknown amount of propane is delivered that they deem "minimum" and charge many times the usual price per gallon, unknown when deliveries are coming, no gauge on tank, tank rental fees, absurd billing practices, etc...this is for a little tank of propane for cooking only. They are cheating people and I have called them so many times to try to straighten incorrect billing/practices that I know them by name, the "girls" in the office and the manager (Washington, NJ I believe) Joe Costa. I SHOULD NOT KNOW THEM BY NAME!
How can Suburban Propane stay in business. We have been, in my opinion, grossly overcharged many, many times. So have my neighbors who are retired and on a fixed income. I do not think this company has any ethics.
Left 3 year old without heat in the winter
I just recently bought a house that was serviced by Suburban Propane. The sellers had bought and filled the tank for us so we wouldn't have to do it. When I called to ask what we needed to do to check to make sure we had enough propane for the winter they told me we needed to fill out an application... Which I didn't and good thing, because they tried to get us to pay the bill that the sellers already paid for and weren't asking for money back. When I called back to discuss the situation with the lady she had gone on vacation and I was told nobody else could help me. So when she got back from vacation she called me and got very irate. Without giving me a chance to explain she told me that she was pulling her equipment asap. Well after that conversation they had their nearest guys come and pull our tanks (that had gas in it that was paid for) So within 30 minutes they left us without heat. Fortunately United Propane was at my house bright and early the next day (within less then 24 hours from when I called) so my family wouldn't go without heat for another cold winters night.

Overcharging, Bad Business.
Suburban Propane will over charge you every month and when you call they drop it right of the bat just for complaining how much they charge. Even with the "discount” they are still more expensive that other propane providers. They sell you the first fill at a discount then charge whatever they want regardless of what the market rate for propane is. They filled my house propane tank for $3.49gal when Schrader’s was charging $1.90.
When you call to complain about their prices compared to their competition they will BS you and tell you that is the "first fill rate" other companies are quoting, but it’s not.
Then when you do switch providers they will leave their tank in your yard for 45-days (because they can is what they told me) and then send you a $90.00 bill for picking it up.
Suburban Propane is the worst propane company hands down, so if you have them call the Co-op or Schrader’s and you will get better service and prices that are reasonable. I did not know any better when I signed up and they had a reasonable rate (the "first fill" rate) but don’t fall for it... If you have Suburban just call around and see for yourself.

The employees at the local level are great. They are just doing what they are told. Its upper management at the Regional and Corporate level that set the overcharging policies. They need to replace the upper management. Customers should write letters to the offices in Whippany NJ, the address is on the suburban propane website.

I PAID 4.6999 TO FILL MY TANK.
WHAT WILL IT BE IN THE WINTER MONTHS.

IF YOU LIVE IN NIANTIC/EAST LYME CT AREA CHANGE TO OSTERMAN!
UPDATE;
I switched from Suburban Propane to Osterman a few months back and what a difference.
I am so happy with Osterman and glad I changed.
If you live in the Niantic/New London CT area and have Suburban Propane kick them to the curb and call Osterman.
OSTERMAN ROCKS!
Six years ago when we built our home, propane rates from Suburban were around $1.50/gal. But that was six years ago and everyone knows what has happened to the petroleum market since then. I wasn’t surprised when the rate increased over the years. However, for my last several re-fills (averaging 300-400 gals or a total of over 1000 gallons in the last year), my propane provider (Suburban Propane) has charged me over $5.00/gal.
I contacted Suburban to see if there had been a mistake. And with each of my last two deliveries, I was given an adjustment of about $.60/gal, and was warned that these were one-time adjustments and my next fill would revert to my normal rate.
I became somewhat curious and suspicious of why the price has continued to climb even when market prices seem to have receded. I took a look at my rates over the past 6 years and I noticed that the rate has NEVER gone down; it has continued to increase even when market price trends down, my rate has steadily increased to today’s price of $5.01.
I began contacting several other providers and competitors of Suburban Propane... and I was quite amazed and aghast to find out that the 'going rate', at this time, from five other providers ranged from $1.70 to $2.30 per gallon, far less than half of what Suburban is charging myself AND my neighbors. FAR LESS. My contacts included Amerigas, Bowman, Hubbard, Patriot, FerrellGas. I can provide contact names and information received from each of these providers.
After contacting Chantell Hendrix, the local manager at Suburban Propane, and there was little progress to solve this pricing issue. Ms. Hendrix explained and tried to justify the rate in part by value added services; such as emergency service, payment options, and prepaid pricing. I did have occasion to use the emergency service about two years ago. It was far from acceptable. After three phone calls and a week’s time, we finally got our propane. The driver apologized profusely, but said that they just didn’t have enough staff to meet calls (at that time). As for the Prepaid Pricing service, my neighbor prepaid one year at a price of $4.25.
Regardless, the services mentioned are fairly standard among the five other providers I contacted, so I really don’t consider them a value added especially to the extent of Suburban’s pricing.
I told Ms. Hendrix of my findings from other propane providers, she cautioned that the prices I was given were probably for a 'first fill’ and I would be charged a different price for subsequent fills. But I have found that is just not the case. Indeed, one of the 5 providers does in fact offer a 'first' fill at $.30/gal less (from $2.17) to attract new customers. This is still a far cry from $5.01.
Each provider did explain that market price influences rates and rates will change between deliveries. But historical pricing over the last 2 years for EACH of the five providers, none have been even close to $5.00 rate that Suburban is charging. In fact the market price is currently going down and they are passing on those lower rates to their customers.
Historical pricing given to me was based on a residential 500 gallon tank, with usage between 900-1200 gals a year. Some of the prices reached a peak last year to that of $3-$4/gal, but ALL companies report that pricing has gone down from those levels to something closer to $1.70-$2.30/gal.
SO... WHY NOT JUST CHANGE PROVIDERS?
Unfortunately, to add insult to injury, Suburban Propane has refused to sell me the underground tank which I lease from them. Apparently it is company policy not to sell tanks… though no explanation was given as to the reasoning for that policy.
Instead I will be required to dig up the tank, obviously ruining 6 years of landscaping and causing additional expense of the dig (which is MY responsibility according to them) not to mention the installation of a new tank and the hardship to myself and my family. I have offered to pay a price for the tank at today’s retail price (even though it’s been in the ground for 6 years). My research indicates the price for a new 500 gallon tanks to be $1700 to $1800 (quoted from several of the other providers I contacted).
I have pleaded with Suburban to help me avoid the destruction of my landscaping, but to no avail. This is extremely unfortunate and seems even ‘spiteful’. But it appears that it is the only way I will be able to release myself from under Suburan’s hold.
A counter offer from Ms. Hendrix was another one-time rate at $4.50/gal… and then it was further reduced to $2.80/gal. But this price is still 21% higher than the highest price from another provider and it is a ONE-TIME price.
I have several neighbors that are also paying these exorbitant prices to Suburban... and I am gradually trying to notify them of this situation. But I wonder how many people are paying these prices without knowledge that they are being severely overcharged. I feel Suburban is gouging their customers; they are certainly not providing a 'fair and equitable' price for home heating propane.
We signed up for the "Secure Plan" with Suburabn last August. We had to pay $574.11 up front, the remaining 11 months charge for propane would be $208.77. I received a letter in mid Feb stating that we have taekn delivery of propane at market price in excess of the amount of gallons contracted in our [protected] plan. Therefore our new payment has been adjusted to $579.00. They last fill our tank on 1/5/2011, they charged me $5.16 per gallon. I get home today and they have delivered more propane; bill - $2395.36, $4.62 a gallon. I called and fought with them on the phone. They dropped the rate to $3.99. They are now telling me my new monthly payment for the next 6 months is $823.3. I AM NOT PAYING IT.
TOTALLY DISAGREE! Osterman is the WORST company EVER! Ashamed to say we have been customers for many years, but certainly not out of any sense of satisfaction or loyalty. Whenever we've had to call their despicable "Customer Service" in the Plainfield CT office to dispute a bill (which is almost every statement because they LOVE to add "mystery fees"... Google other review sites if you require further evidence of this), the incessantly nasty people who answer the phone will rudely argue about why the new mystery fee is justified (it's not) and cannot and will not be removed from the bill. And they're never insignificant amounts, they're usually between $60-$80 and have nothing to do with the propane that was delivered AND PAID FOR. Also, after explicitly telling them on Day One we would ONLY be using this gas for cooking (thus the small tank with the direct line to the stove), they started charging us a $60 per delivery "MINIMAL USAGE" fee [read: they're charging us for something we have not and will not ever use]. Recently they came and disconnected our propane gas line, so we finally caved and paid their fee over the phone while the tech was still there but she wouldn't call him and ask him to wait until the transaction was completed, so he left and then she wanted an additional $75 reconnection fee for him to come back THE NEXT WEEK! Wait, WHAT? We are throwing in the towel and calling another gas company. Anyone who is reading this, PLEASE take our advice and learn from our financially painful experience and stay far, far away from Osterman! Nobody needs this much added stress or fee-based extortion in their lives.
I live in Leesburg VA and my entire bill from Suburban Propane at my modest, four-bedroom house from October 6, 2010-February 1, 2011 is $2465, or roughly $632 per month. What's the reason for these insane charges for a cold-loving family of four that keeps the heat temp at night at 60 degrees? Price gouging, pure and simple.
According to the US Department of Energy, the average cost of residential propane in Virginia on February 1, 2011 was $3.00 gallon. Suburban Propane filled up my tank the same day and charged me $4.00 gallon. Same thing in January. Today I called I called another local residential propane company today and they said their price for where I live today (March 11, 2011) is $2.89 per gallon. I called Suburban Propane and they said my price would be $3.69.
I'm 57 years old, well-off and have never in my life disputed a utility bill. In fact, I really had no idea I was being charged this much by Suburban Propane until earlier this week, when the "amount due" on the bill changed from the $180 I've been paying to $1745. I believe that I've been the victim of price gouging and deliberate deception by Suburban Propane, and I'm not going to stand for it. I'm taking these people to court.
I had been purchasing propane gas for my fireplace from Agway since 1999 and then a few years ago Suburban took over for. All of that time I've been a good customer who pays on time. Agway never charged me a tank rental (100 gallon tank) and they charged fair market prices. Last year I received a nasty note from Suburban that they were going to terminate my account because my payment was a few days late. Then they sent me a tank rental charge without any notification of this new charge. I sucked it all up and figured Suburban not as client friendly as Agway was. Then a couple of weeks they filled my tank charging me $5.20 a gallon. I couldn't believe it. So I made a few phone calls, one of which was to Patriot and they said that today's cost is $3.20 and they don't for tank rental. I called Suburban and told them not to deliver any more gas unless they've called me first and I've authorized. I also asked them why they charged me $5.20 gallon. She couldn't answer but said that she was sure that for next delivery I could probably negotiate a better price. I told her that as a client of good standing I should not have to do that. Bottom line, I'm switching to Patriot !
My daughter told me that many of her friends used to deal with Suburban but the general consensus is that they are crooks.
reside in south carolina, suburban is conducting their price gouging in this state, as well as many other areas of the country. this so called federal attorney general needs to examine what suburban is doing to the consumers that are stuck with their underground tanks on a lease basis. they refuse to let us buy the tanks, knowlingly that many homeowners are not going to ruin their landscape.
I had a similar problem. The last time they filled my tanks, I was charged $4.70 per gallon. I called 4 other propane companies in the area--the prices ranged from $2.40 to $2.63. I then called Suburban and stated that they had a lot of nerve charging a 75-year-old widow, living on a limited income, $4.70 while others were charging below $3.00. She then asked me for the companies names, which I gladly gave her. She left the phone for a few minutes, came back and stated that they would charge me a new rate of $2.50 and give me a refund on the current fillup. I am waiting to see what happens on the next fillup. An 82-year-old neighbor was charged $4.90 per gallon and, after talking with me, called Suburban and received a reduction also. If it happens again, we are writing a letter to the editor of all the area newspapers.
Bullying techniques
WE ARE BEING BULLIED INTO FILLING OUR TANK! We have just recently relocated to a rental property. When we arrived the gas had been capped by Suburban without the owners knowledge. They have come onto the property without any permission and cut the gas off. We called them and obviously payed for the reconection. Now they keep harassing us to fill the tank even though it's at 50% capacity! They claim it's because we are new clients and they have to make a delivery to activate the account! Do we have to spend this unnecessary money!?

No, but you get no gas.
Out of line pricing
I live in a rural area, have had Suburban Propane service for over 10 years, never late payment, often pay ahead. Got hit with an extreme bill of $1015.47 for tank fill. When I asked what's up, with the $4.29 a gallon they said that was the going rate. I find this 'odd' as when I take my portable 5 gallon down to the local gas station that has a Suburban...

not ordered delivery/prc gouging
These crooks took it upon themselves to pump 327 gallons of propane into my tank, that I did not need, or order. Then they had the nerve to bill me at 5.89/gal! Where do they come up with these prices? Gasoline is only 3.15 a gallon, so I doubt it has anything to do with oil prices going up. I told them several times in the past, I did not wish to receive unscheduled deliveries unless I ask 1st I dont have thousands of $$$ laying around to pay them whenever they feel like surprising me with a delivery. If it was 2$ a gal still, thats one thing but 4, 5, 6$ a gallon, hundreds of gallons at a time, comon who can afford that? They pull this crap every year. They get away with it because they know we cant get nat gas in this area. ###!
This is so similar to what we experienced. We finally had to put a lock on our propane tank to keep them from making unauthorized deliveries. We finally had enough after they were going to charge us $4.54/gal when everywhere else was in the $2.60/gal range. We had FerrellGas come out and dig up our tank and we purchased a new tank from them. No more rentals for us. FerrellGas charged us $2.18 to fill our new tank. We had to spend a ton of money to get rid of Suburban but it was worth it. We have notified Suburban to pick up their tank and it is still sitting in our yard after six weeks, we are not sure how we are ever going to get them to pick it up. When I call they always have an emergency. How do they stay in business?
unautorized delivery and over-pricing
I am just one of the many, many others who have filed complaints about this company's deceitful practices. I have noticed over the years, as other customers have, that their prices are WAY above other local propane suppliers. I mean, they're not even close! Unfortunately my tank is buried and was already in place when I bought the house. When I told them I didn't want to use them anymore, they said "no problem ... we'll just come out and dig up your tank, and by the way this will be at YOUR expense. And we are not responsible for any damage we may cause your property." I said to them "I don't see any language in the contract I signed with you stating that." They said "Well, it SHOULD have been stated. So good luck suing us ... we've won every other lawsuit others have filed". Nice customer service, eh? Oh, interestingly enough, customer service is one thing they said they prided themselves in, and that's one reason their prices were higher." What a freakin' joke these people are. Recently they delivered 400 gals of propane unsolicited (I am on "will call" and did not ask for a delivery.) My wife was home and even told the delivery guy not to put it in, because we didn't order it. He said "Well, that's what my books say to do, so I'm putting it in". This, instead of calling the office to verify the delivery. Now they're trying to make me pay the bill at mid-winter prices. Usually I call to set up a delivery in Aug or Sept when prices are typically lowest. Folks, this is just the tip of the iceberg as to the problems I've had with these people. I could go in forever. In case you're not aware, there IS a nationwide class-action lawsuit being filed against Suburban for these very reasons. Here's a link to the law firm's web site: http://www.nka.com/Cases/SuburbanPropane.aspx?CaseRef=152
Suburban Propane are a bunch of crooks. I hope they get nailed hard for what they've done (and continue to do) to decent hard working Americans. Shut'em all down!
refusal to give original documentation fr Agway & Overpricing of Propane
We originally moved into our home in 1988 w propane service from Agway Energy Products out of Clarksboro, NJ, a company located within 5 miles of our location. We are a rural area with propane heating, wells for water and septic systems. Some of the area, along the major roadways, is just now being converted to city water & sewerage, along with standard gas supplies as new developments are being constructed. We never had a problem with Agway, each year we would receive a budget agreement & proposed cost for propane for the upcoming winter in July/August, it was always reasonable and we always maintained our service through Agway under these terms. We, also, purchased our propane tank, which is set underground on our property, through a lease purchase agreement with Agway. The terms of which were after 7 years of continued purchasing and service through Agway Energy Products, the tank would then become our property.
Our problems began immediately with Suburban Propane. Our billing for deliveries of propane was inflated from the prior balance due Agway to each delivery that Suburban Propane made to our home. We made agreements with Suburban for a yearly price per gallon of propane to insulate ourselves from price fluctuations each July/ August, by our own initiation, because we did not receive the same type of customer from Suburban as we had from Agway. Our billing problem went on for the better part of 2 years, in which we had to keep a running accounting of what we actually owed the company, adjusting for the balance forward error, adjustments to pricing errors and kept all of of the calls logged in a file. With Agway, if we had a problem we could easily drive over to the office in Clarks boro and resolve it face-to-face with customer service, who were always well-advised and pretty much knew each customer and their account. With Suburban this is difficult, as initially, the billing problems were being handled out of Pittsburgh, 6 hours from where we live and we were not the only ones having the problem!
The Company was undergoing computer problems at the time of the billing errors, per customer service representatives, that's why our bills were so wildly inaccurate, along with trying to bring Agway and Suburban, together, as one Company on a single computer system. I am an Accountant and have been through several conversions, myself. From my experience, conversions or start-ups are never smooth, easy or clean and generally take about 18 months to work-out the kinks in the new or converted system. So, I was very sympathetic to what Suburban Propane was facing, as well as the haranguing the Customer Service reps must have been taking, we logged our numerous calls to Suburban, with whom we spoke and what transpired in each call. Even after all of this time, we still having billing problems with the company.
However, the problem we are now facing is one that is most frustrating! We have been in our home 22 years as of October 2010 and according to my count have fulfilled the 7 year lease/purchase agreement for the propane tank in our yard. Suburban Propane is now charging its customers $4.99 a gallon for propane. We have been trying since last April to get on board with another propane supplier in our area, but we must have proof that we own the tank. We never received a copy of the lease/ purchase agreement from Agway, it is not in our closing documents from Settlement on our home and when we asked Suburban to provide us with a copy of the agreement, they sent a piece of paper that has absolutely nothing to do with the lease/purchase of the tank. When we call to ask for further documentation, they tell us that's all they hjave from the Agway files. As we have been in this ridiculous tag team match of trying to get proof that we own the tank for other propane providers to take us on as customers, the price of propane has steadily gone up in the general market and we have been unable to control what we are paying for our propane. Suburban so graciously agreed to a $4.50 per gallon price, yesterday, when my husband called flipping out about the $4.99 price per gallon, as we have received quotes from several other suppliers in the area in the $2.50 to $3.50 per gallon range. As I have researched how to gain access to the required documentation for ownership of the tank in our yard, I came across a site that has a plethora of complaints abut Suburban Propane's price gouging tactics. I have tried to locate our lease/purchase agreement through the filing of UCCs and searching all of the areas that I have been accustomed to using in my experience as an Accountant, with no positive results. At this point, I am extremely angry and considering getting an Attorney to handle our problem for us. This company is abusing its customers and flaunting Fair Trade practices, at a minimum. It is definitlely not acting in an ethical manner, any way you look at this situation.
I will report back with any information that I can gather that may be of help to another having issue with this unscrupulous company.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Suburban is practicing very unethical business practices. After having a new propane tank installed by another company and 3 or more calls to remove the tank from my property thinks have finally come to a head. Not only has the company defrauded me out of 600 dollars in "unknown" charges and fees they claim now that their higher than average cost fir product is due to their unequal costumer service. I pay an additional fee of 300 a year for service in which I have never used or known I had. They just delivered 440 gallons of fuel oil at 5.709 a gallon the national average is 3.58 and locally is 3.49 a gallon. Help! These people are killing my family income and taking advantage of ever costumer!
Price Gouging and abuse of contract
If you’re looking for a Propane Provider in the Seattle area, chose ANYONE BUT SUBURBAN PROPANE!
I've finally finished with my three year contract with Suburban Propane. From the very first time I called to have my tank filled I was charged $5.99 per gallon. I checked around and found that price was roughly double the going rate. I made this comment to the person at Suburban Propane only to be told that was a "teaser rate" offered by competitors and that rate would go up on the next refill. I tried to cancel their service but was told I was in a contract and could not cancel my service.
Later that first year I received a bill from Suburban Propane for a “pick up” I had allegedly made at their facility. I had never even been to their facilities and certainly don’t have a portable 120 gallon tank or the means to transport it. It took three months and eleven phone calls to resolve the issue. During one of these calls I managed to get the lady who took my call to admit I was paying double their normal rate. My next fill cost me $2.47 per gallon. However, my subsequent filling cost me $5.99 per gallon. It took me three phone calls to resolve that issue. This was the last straw.
I called a competitor, Cenex, and not only did they charge less than half of what Suburban charged but they were extremely polite. Their pricing has never varied more than 5% and in fact has gone down recently. They were extremely sympathetic to my situation and informed me that they pull about ten of Suburban Propane’s tanks per week.
They came to my home, moved Suburban's tank behind my garage so I could wait out my contract and replaced it with their tank. I've waited over a year for my contract to end with Suburban. I called them today to cancel and was told I would be charged $90 for a tank removal charge. Suburban Propane is, by far, the worst company I have ever had to deal with. They actively go out of their way to gouge their customers and take every opportunity to treat them with contempt and use their contract as unfair leverage against their customers. It is my sincere hope that anyone considering signing up with Suburban Propane will chose their competitor instead. Companies like Suburban are parasites and need to cease to exist.
A driver for Suburban Propane came to my house today to pick up their tank. We had it stored behind the garage for the last year waiting for our contract to expire. He asked why we were leaving Suburban Propane. I told it was because they were overcharging. He said, “by about double?” He then followed up saying this is what he does all day long and he was now trying to get a job with the competition. I mentioned the $90 cancellation charge we were expecting and he responded it was a common threatening tactic used by his employer and that he doubted I would actually be billed.
Based on my conversation with the driver and with the comments on this and other boards it is clear to me that consumers are waking up to the fact that they are being gouged by Suburban Propane. It is unfortunate that Suburban Propane continues to hold their customers hostage with contracts that lock them into paying exorbitant rates. I guess I'll wait and see if the threatened $90 cancellation charge will actually be billed to me.
If you are in a contract with Suburban, do what I did. Hire the competition and store Suburban Propane’s tank on your property until the contract expires. You will end up paying for the yearly tank rental fee but $60 is significantly less than the additional $250+ over the market rate you pay for just one fill up of one 90 gallon propane tank.
Contacted Suburban Propane (Tacoma is the main office for Woodinville residents) to have their tank removed from my property (they only wanted to fill it during the middle of winter when they had even-more-so inflated their prices, so I got my own tank and I can shop around now - and prefer the honest people at Pacer). I actually had to wait an extra year because they got to the tank before I could lock it and filled it when I didn't want them out (so I had to use it up - it is apparently illegal to transport these tanks with any fuel in them; and they do not buy back fuel). Suburban told me that I must pay $90 to them to pick up their own tank! Funny, just over a year ago they picked up my mother's tank and charged her nothing to do so. Suburban doesn't like to explain themselves and the women in the office get angry when you complain. They were rude and even hung up on me claiming that I was yelling when I questioned them. They wanted to know my mother's name so that they could go after her for the 'forgotten' fee! They are sending me a copy of 'my' contract though it was my daughter-in-law who started service with them, and I have never signed a contract with them (though I guess it is considered a contract because one pays the rental yearly to them). Anyway, I am very disappointed in their shenanigans to say the least.
Thanks for your update. I bought my home 22 years ago, thus "inherited" this account. I've been just dutifully paying these gas bills all these years. I have personally never signed anything with this company in 22 years. So, I cannot possibly still be under any contract. I do pay the annual tank rental fee of $38, which I just paid last month. The complaints about Suburban Propane are from all over of the country, so I'm guessing that this behavior starts at and probably encouraged/rewarded by their corporate HQ, as opposed to just a couple bad locations. Thanks to the internet, those who know how to use it, are starting to wake up to this companies antics. Were able to read others complaints and check average prices. A 10-15% difference might be justified, ...but "by about double" is totally unacceptable!
Brian, please let us know how your situation with Suburban Propane turned out. People out here are interested, and need to be informed about companies who operate in such a manner!
High costs and unreliability
I am reading all the complaints, and our situation is the same. They keep filling tanks as soon as prices go up and there never seems to be a supervisor available to answer questions. We have 4 tanks, and we were suppose to be locked in at a price, and they never do. I understand you own the tank, after you have had it for atleast five years. Please help me get out of this situation. I would like to use another gas company, but they said I cannot, because they own the own. Any advice would be appreciate.

I have the same situation...But they Lapsed on the laese and now we own the tank, , , Bye Bye SUBURBAN Propane
their contracts are deceptive scams
agreed to purchase 250 gallons of propane at 2.99 gallon...now they say that I signed a contract that demands that I signed up for automatic refills (to be topped off) thru June of 2011 at market rate per gallon, even if I dont want or need more gas...that I have no choice but have to buy more gas thru june even when i dont use gas but for winter heating...! I cannot stop them from topping off tanks at 6 or 7 dollars a gallon...they said it was in contract...I cannot find this in contract, and they say that it is...if it is there, then the language that they are using is very deceptive deliberately designed to confuse to deceive the public into signing up to be gouged!
I do not know what to do at this point because they are holding all the cards...

Suburban is nothing but a scam. I bought two 100 pound tanks to be rid of them, they show up and fill my tank when it is over 75percent full and then charge a $65 delivery fee. Picked up the tank and now want to pay me back for half what I paid for the propane. Do yourself a favor buy a 100 pound tank from Lowe's and take it to fill yourself it is manageable by yourself and will save you tons of cash. I bought 2 when one is empty switch to the other and fill the empty one. I don't heat my home however only use for stove grill and gas logs. Suburban is crooks no doubt about it.
I feel SUBURBAN is a rip off. They don't care about their customers at all. I have been with them for 15 years and the totally ripped me off this year. And try to talk to someone is a joke. They say they will call me back but never happens. They should be shut down.. The BIGGEST CROOKS I have ever seen.
I totally agree with all. Just received propane from suburban today and it is $5.45/gallon! Looked up New Jersey average prices for today is $3.00 and change per gallon. Suburban has done this to us for the past 3 yrs. This will be the last time they do this to us. We have a woodstove, and they are telling me it cost $1600.00 for 2 months to heat my 1200 square foot house! And where is the government/state regulations for propane? There are regulations for other heating utilities. I just feel sorry for the older people who just go ahead and pay there bills without even looking. Suburban Propane are nothing but crooks.
I'm having the same problem. My last bill from Suburban Propane in Washington, NJ was for $5.06 per gallon! This is price gouging of the worst kind. Evidently, I missed a postcard from Suburban sent last July that would have allowed me to lock in a lower price per gallon. I take responsibility missing the postcard but they should at least charge me the current market rate for the propane. The U.S. Department of Energy website shows an average market price of $3.40 per gallon for the Eastern U.S. Mid-Atlantic States for the week of 1/10/11. It seems Suburban is using my missed lock in as an opportunity to charge whatever they want. Suburban owns the propane tank on my property and won't allow me to buy propane from any other supplier using that tank. Beyond that, I've requested a description of my options for buying the tank outright or having it removed but they haven't provided the information or returned any of my calls. I'm really feeling stuck...
Price Gouging
Have been a customer of Suburban Propane for about 9 years. Over that time, I'm embarrassed to say I have diligently paid my bills each time while trusting that I was being dealt with in an honest manner by the company.
My last bill, dated November 30, was an astonishing $1690 for a tank fill. I've grown accustomed to large early-season fills, but not of this magnitude. When I looked at the price per gallon of $4.29 it seemed high, and a number of phone calls to others in Boise, Idaho showed prices ranging from $2.35 to $2.55 for route delivery of propane. The Suburban Dealer in a community just over 100 miles away (Twin Falls, ID) is offering the same service for $1.85 per gallon.
When I called their office, they offered to reduce it first to $3.50, then to $2.99. Not much of a reduction.
This is extremely troubling for reasons beyond the obvious of paying so much for the fuel. How many people do as I do--steadfastly pay their bills on time, not knowing that a provider of a service such as heating fuel is applying higher prices arbitrarily?
I told them to come get their tank, while I investigate my rights pertaining to paying for unused fuel.
If you live in Idaho and are being serviced by Suburban Propane, watch your bill carefully and better yet, switch providers.

Once you are locked into their contract you will get the honor of paying $1.00 to $1.50 per gallon more than any other propane company's customers. Go with V1 or Ed Staub if you want to be treated well and not be price gouged. Oh yeah, no one else makes you sign a contract!
Overcharges
This company operates in the southeastern US and I am not sure where else. But I am sure of a few things per my conversations with these people, which are as follows; they are an unregulated industry which means no one from any government agencies watch them to see if they are operating in an ethical manner; as such they are allowed to charge whatever they please for their product; they are basically a legal monopoly; and last but not least, if you use this company beware. Watch your bill and talk to other such companies to find out if you are being overcharged by this one. When you speak to other propane suppliers to ask of their current pricing, you have to tell them that you do not want their introductory rate but the current price of propane that they are charging their current customers. This product does fluctuate in price. But when I investigated my family's charges last winter I found that other companies in the area were charging half as much as this company. Thats right 50% less. The way I see it, people should be warned!
UNETHICAL PRACTICES!!!
We purchased a weekend country home a few years ago that had a tank already set up from the previous owners. Being new to gas svc we didn't realize how much we were being abused by this company until we stopped the auto pay and realized that they were refilling once a month. My monthly gas bill was around $800 for a tiny weekend home even in the non winter season. The price of gas at that time was around $2 a gallon. We have a 200 gallon tank... ummmm... Do the math.. When we called them out on it they just talked around the issue and told us they would come check our system for leaks. Surprisingly (HA) no leaks. They refused to do anything about the "missing gas" and our "missing money". I originally thought that the delivery guy might be filling his own tank since there was no room in ours at all during their monthly fills. Then I learned that everyone else in the area avoids them like the plague. Like I said, we have a tiny house that even in the winter we keep the heat at 48* we supplement with wood while we are there. So, for the 10-12 days a month that we were in that home we used 200 gallons of gas in August! After we stopped the auto refill (which took sometime even after the letters from our attorney- the guy just kept coming while we were away, he even told us that we called for a fill once when we pulled up and there he was filling the tank..or maybe he was taking gas out...) We ended up putting up a gate and a lock to keep them out. HOW CRAZY IS IT WHEN YOU HAVE TO BUILD A LOCKED GATE TO KEEP THE PROPANE COMPANY FROM TRYING TO RIP YOU OFF?! The last time we called for a fill they told us the charge would be $5.85 per gallon. (This is late spring btw, not anywhere close to winter or even fall.) The local prices for propane even for a measly 200 gallon tank were at around $2.30 a gallon. We finally got tired of feeling (I could use some pretty awful descriptions here but I'll try to keep it clean) raped by the @#%#*$! Gas company that we switched to a local guy and have been happy with much fatter wallets in this difficult economy ever since. If you are looking at using suburban propane look somewhere else. period. I've never dealt with a company so sneaky and willing to stick it to people the hardest during the hardest times. It's just plain evil.

Did Suburban own the tank? I want to get someone else for the same reasons but I think they may own the tank. I'm think of making them prove they own the tank since it's buried on my property.
