CenterPoint Energy Billing issues

I was on a service repair plan and paid my monthly bills by mail. One month I paid my bill online and then I never received another bill in the mail. I thought they had discontinued the service. About 10 months later I started getting letters from CenterPoint saying they were trying to e-mail me my bill for some reason, but my e-mail address didn't work for them. They had the right e-mail, but I never did receive those e-mails even after adding CenterPoint to my e-mail list. I never did get another monthly bill in the mail until they sent me a notice of final payment for $287.40. Now I am getting notices from a collection agency for this amount. I told them I am not paying it since I never received any of the monthly bills. They have stopped the service and are not adding to my bill but they still want me to pay for the 12 or more months that I wasn't using their service.

It's called "reading the fine print." The My Account Online Options clearly tell you prior to signing up that you will no longer receive a paper bill. If you were concerned about them having cancelled the plan you should have called to confirm. They were kind enough to provide you with their service, even if you weren't intelligent enough to discuss you concerns with them (and even if you weren't using it), and now you're not paying them?!? Oh, well... It's your credit score.

CenterPoint Energy Unorganized & Rude

I paid my bill at a local 'pay station' Monday morning at 9. I was told by a very rude *customer service* (laughable) representative that I did not need to report the payment because it is automatically posted to the account when it is paid at such a location. -insert lots of sighing & smacking of lips-

My service was disconnected sometime late Monday afternoon.

I did not know that it was disconnected until the raw meat for dinner had already been prepared to cook, mixes were mixed, and batters were ready.

When I called to find out what had gone wrong I was informed that this was considered my fault, my negligence, and most importantly more of my money would be needed before we could get reconnected.

$20 service fee for them to come out and disconnect me.
$40 reconnect fee.
$20 service charge for them to come back out and reconnect despite the fact that I paid on time as promised and it was their own customer service that fell through.
$47 after hours overtime fee if I want it reconnected on the same day.

$127 total just in fees.

And my bill was paid in full on time, and I attempted to report the payment.

When calling customer service I am more often than not hung up on after listening to representatives laugh & talk for a few minutes.

I suppose they disconnect after enough time has passed for it to count on their calls received quota.

I am fairly certain that they do not even have their headset on, as surely they would respond to my direct cursing, screaming and name calling when I realize that I am hearing the exact 3 females that I heard the last time I called, waited in que for approx. 15 minutes and then was hung up on.

9 out of 10 representatives that I am forced to deal with [protected]) are so completely and shockingly rude.

They seem to be very fond of eating while receiving calls. Taking no shame in making you hold while they chew.

That is, of course, if you can understand them.

I would have presumed that being able to articulate would be part of the job description in customer service.

There are no available alternative gas companies. The only option for getting rid of CenterPoint would be to convert my hot water heater, stove top, oven & central heating unit to electricity.

If this happens many more times that option may prove to be more economical.

CenterPoint Energy charging for anything they can!!!

I have 5 children the youngest is 7 months old. It is such a hassle making a payment to Centerpoint, I usually put it off. Since I don't deal with mailing checks, I use my credit card over the phone. First I have to call Centerpoint (on the phone for about 10-15 minutes)just to get the phone number to call for Bill Matrix to make my payment (another 5-10 minutes) plus they charge a 2.95 charge for electronic checks or plastic. THEN I have to call Centerpoint AGAIN (Another 10-15 minutes of phone time) to give them the confirmation code.

Well, my gas was cut off yesterday evening, no knocker...nothing. So I had called Centerpoint, the electronic voice said 61.08 plus $20.00 reconnect fee. But being that I wanted to speak to a person, I had to call back. I finally got through to a person and was told 157.00 and that our service wouldn't be reconnected until Tuesday. Today is Thursday! 5 kids, 2 adults, no hot water for 6 freaking days!?!?!?!?! The guy, can't remember his name said there was no way they could make it out here until Tuesday.

Grumbling, I got off the phone called and made the $157.00 payment, plus an additional 2.95 Bill matrix payment fee.

I called Centerpoint energy back with the confirmation code and still pretty ticked off that my service wouldn't be reconnected until Tuesday. Then by the lady I was speaking to with the receipt number, she tells me that I can pay an additional $35.00 OVERTIME fee for them to reconnect today. But through Bill Matrix of course. They have to have that additional $2.95 ya know! But I had to do what I had to do for my babies!

So I called, made the payment to Bill Matrix and then called Centerpoint back. They couldn't give me a time of when someone would be here, but someone has to be here! Good thing I have no life outside my house... ya right! DON'T THESE PEOPLE KNOW THAT WE HAVE TO WORK TOO!?!?!?!

They charge you an arm and a leg for everything. My bill was only 94.40 (Summertime, no heat, just hot water) and it totalled 157.00 for a reconnect fee, So it was 94.40 (gas) + 62.60 (reconnect fee) + 2.95 (pay it fee) + 35.00 (OVER TIME fee) + 2.95 (another pay it fee).

Did I mention that I can't go and make the payment at the actual company, because there isn't a Centerpoint energy or place to make a payment anywhere near. The closest one is in Lawton, Oklahoma which is about 50 miles away!

This just seem illegal to me and they are getting away with it. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they started charging us to mail our bills to us! I know they charge us a stamp to mail our paper checks to them!

I'm so livid over this that I am thinking about calling my attorney to see if something or anything can be done! Gas prices are high enough!

It just happened to me. After being wrongfully disconnected and paying $62 to reconnect. The tell me that are going to take 3 days to recconect... What is this? this an utility and public service that is considered a basic need. I think $62 is a big charge for 5 minutes they take reconnecting, I think they could work on saturdays.
I bet if they didn´t have the monopoly for the gas service in the area, I am most certain they wouldn´t have such a lousy customer service.

CenterPoint Energy lying snakes

Centerpoint is a bunch of liars, and their customer service sucks on the phone. I missed work today to sit at home and wait ALL DAY for a representative to show up...NO ONE SHOWED UP...whats worse is that they lied about it and said that they showed up to turn my gas on... WHATEVER not a damn person showed up. they say they rang the doorbell and my dog started barking, strange at the time he said he showed up was right around the time our power came back on after hurricane Ike. so if he was just before the power came on the the doorbell would not have worked therefore not getting my attention, let alone my dogs to go bark at the door. if it was after the fact that we got power back then he is still a liar, because once the power came on I went and opened the garage door to take the trash out to the curb since tomorrow is trash day and we haven't had trash service for weeks due to Ike. the thing that makes it worse is that they sent an e-mail saying when they would be here, and it stated that nobody needed to be here... why then would he come out (the liar didn't come out) and cancel my turn on because he said nobody was here. DON"T TRUST CENTERPOINT THEY LIE AND THE SAY ITS YOUR FAULT AND YET MAKE YOU WAIT LONGER FOR SERVICE.

CenterPoint Energy ignoring downed power line reports

Center Point has been contacted over one hundred times regarding downed power lines on Spring Cypress Road between Grant and Eldridge Roads in northwest Harris County zip code 77377. Center Point is ignoring community requests to have these lines and downed poles repaired/replaced. Center Point is also diverting power restoration crews from this area to other, more affluent areas in the wake of hurricane Ike. Center Point refuses to send crews to this area even though a clear and present hazardous condition exists. Center Point is negligent and liable for this hazard.

CenterPoint Energy unfair equipment charges

After many phone calls and several weeks, we *finally* got someone from Centerpoint to come out and install a meter for electrical service - only they didn't. After severl days of calling customer service to see if our power had finally been installed (the service is in a different town than we live in) we were informed of the turn down, as the company calls it. We asked what the reasons were, the rep named them, one of which was a cryptic "Construction needed". We asked the CSR to explain the problems (so that we knew what to correct) and she couldn't say! We asked what "construction needed" meant, she similarly couldn't explain it and then referred us to a local rep, John Burke, which we had to leave a voice mail for. To make a long story short (and believe me, it IS a long story) John went out to our property and determined that the transformer box was just that, a box, and that the company has to intall one in order to provide us electrical service. Because the service is going to our RV rather than a home (we won't be building for a few years) Centerpoint is charging us $864.00 for the labor of installing said transformer. Keep in mind others with homes in this subdivision get this service for free, but we are being forced to pay for it. We will not be reimbursed for the cost when we build our home, and the transformer also services the vacant property next door - so once someone moves in there, they will get for free what we have had to pay for. I spoke with John's supervisor Christine Churny who made no concessions whatsoever to our plight. As the $864.00 charge is discretionary, I feel they could have given us a break. FREE would have been nice, but halving it seems fair given that it's a shared piece of equipment. I wish there were an alternative to Centerpoint. This latest is just another problem we have had with them and our service hasn't even started yet (although our disservice has!)

CenterPoint Energy Reconnect Fees

CenterPoint Energy rightfully shut off my gas service and I have no complaint about this, as I was completely in the wrong for failing to make my payment. However after 5 years of service and no previous mishaps, I as completely floored by the fees associated with reconnections and their reconnection schedule. I identified that my services were terminated on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 6:30pm after returning home from work. I immediately contacted CenterPoint and found them closed for the day. I called back to the office on August 8, 2008 at 7:54am and was informed by a very nice lady, that for me to have reconnection, I must pay the balance due $127.89 (understandable), a new deposit of $70.00 and a technician service fee of $62.06. I find the deposit request to be extreme punishment, in conjunction with a reconnection fee of $62.06. To add to this punishment, I was told the Houston office of CenterPoint would not schedule a reconnect on the day of payment and they would only schedule for the next business day. Unfortunately for me, I made the payment and reconnection call on a Friday and the next business day meant, I would have to wait until Monday for a technician to return to my home. After paying over $250.00, you would think that CenterPoint would make an effort to restore service so their customer is not without hot water and a working stove for an entire weekend. But of course why should they care about us when they are the only game in town, and we don't have a choice in whether we play or not.

I live in Minnesota it is -7 outside December. I had never had problems with this company. Last month I was sick for 2 weeks and missed one month payment. Since I overpaid (as I do often with this company) I owed $50.69. The CenterPoint Energy policy is that if your payment is late and is over $50 they will shut off your services. My next payment was due on December 14, they shut off my gas in December 11 in the morning. Amazing, I was given less then a month to catch up and they shut me off in December in MN over .69 cents. And now charging me reconnection fee. And amazingly enough first said it would be $22, but then I get a reciete and it says $50. Amazing!

You don't have to take the rubbish that Centerpoint Gas dishes out. The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) regulates gas companies. I recently had a problem with Centerpoint, and am filing my complaint today. Here is a link to the RRC website: http://www.rrc.state.tx.us/

I work two jobs and I overlooked paying my gas bill. Centerpoint Energy is a scam. They charged me a $20.00 chip fee, a $40.00 reconnect fee and a $47.00 same day service fee to have my gas turned on for same day service. What is a chip fee? I had to pay $107.00 for a $63.00 bill. And the customer service dept is very rude . I hate this company.

I was late paying my bill due to being on unemployment. It would have been nice if the service tech had knocked on the door before disconnecting . I had $100 in the bank to last us 4 days, but would have called and paid the $73 bill and avoid the disconnect. Nobody gave me a courtesy knock on the front door. Now I have to pay the bill, a reconnection fee and a deposit. I don't have the money for the reconnection fee and the deposit, but CenterPoint Energy could care less. Money is their God and that is all that matters to them. I had to borrow money to pay the fees to get my gas back on. Like I don't already feel low enough due to being unemployed and fighting to pay the bills. I really would like to have a choice in service providers. Until then CenterPoint Energy will screw us as they please.

Seems there is a lot of complaints with Centerpoint energy Today i was sitting on my sofa and saw the service man for Centerpoint Energy go around my house .I walked out the back door and ask him what he was doing .He looked up and told me I didn't pay my gas bill.I told him to wait I paided my bill.He contiued to take out my gas meter as I was showing him the bill I had paid. i got on the phone and called the gas Co.He stood and watched as I talked to the lady on the phone.I told her I had paid the budget bill they sent me in Fed of 2010. The bill I got told me to pay the $70. and i would be on the budget plan for the yr so I thought that was it. I paid my bill in full for Jan, 2010 in full and the letter told me to pay $70 for the month of Feb .I did as they explained and paid the $70. for March 2010 also . I have never been behind or had my utilities cut off before so why did they cut off my gas when i paid the budget amount for the two months ? I was told I have to pay $270 . plus connection fee of $50. so They will turn on my gas again .The sevvice man that cut the gas off didn't even wait to see what was going on before he cut it off .They told me on the phone if he hadn't cut it off and took the meter they would have left it alone .I told the lady I told him to wait and he smiled and continued to take the meter off while I was talking and telling him to wait .Now I am without heat and my 86 yr old Mother with Alizheimers and a bad cold is in the house without heat .What are we to do are they taking everything from us, they have no heart only interested in making money .We are at their advintage they are the only gas co around .Its not like shopping at Walmart we can't go elsewhere .

Yeah, I just found out our reconnect fee is $65. We have 3 children and it's going to be in the 30's tonight. I don't know how a gas company can leave people disconnected overnight knowing the people they cut off are going to be sleeping in temperatures in the 50's in their home. The reconnect fee is absurd and a slap in the face. I could understand maybe $20. I don't remember the fee being $65 not that long ago; I think it used to be $40 last year. If I had extra money laying around, I would have been able to pay my bill and wouldn't have been disconnected in the first place. Most people who get disconnected couldn't afford to pay it in time, so how does demanding such a large reconnect fee make any sense? Like if they bully me, I'm going to magically make money appear in my bank account. I agree there needs to be more providers to choose from to create competitive pricing.

Like the original poster, I can't say my service was wrongly disconnected, but I can and do take issue with how it was implemented. My service was cut off on the 16th of February, a national holiday. My wife came to the house to pick up one of our children to take her to the doctor between 1:00 and 1:30 in the afternoon. There was no note on the door, or she would have let me know that it needed attention. By the time she got home that evening and let me know that the gas was off, my phone call to customer "service" revealed that they can only issue same-day reconnect (after past-due balance + $40 reconnect fee + $75 "deposit" was paid) if everything was taken care of prior to 2:00 p.m. This wouldn't have been a problem had they left a notice on the door, but I'm assuming that was inconvenient for the serviceman who disconnected us.

As it is, I'm awaiting a phone call, hoping that I won't miss a full day of work over this, after having no heat, hot water, or stove overnight with two sick children (11 years old and 8 months old) in the house.

I understand the concept of a "natural monopoly, " but isn't our public service commission supposed to protect us against blatant abuse by these companies? What is my recourse? Electricity is neither as efficient nor as inexpensive as natural gas, propane costs more, and either option would require me to change out my central air unit, my stove, and my water heaters.

Companies like Centerpoint know they have you by the throat, and they miss no opportunity to exert that power over their "valued customers."

I'm in Mississippi, and have sent a complaint to the Public Service Commission, though I don't expect any action on their part. Maybe if enough stories get out and in the public eye, we'll see some reform, though.

CenterPoint Energy pitiful customer service

BE SURE TO TELL THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU WE'VE HAD NO GAS SINCE AUGUST ONE!
Can't get Centerpoint to place my meter in a timely fashion. They were supposed to come Monday August 4th, when they received the fax that the City had inspected the completed plumbing work. When I attempted to inquire about the status of my meter, I was disconnected 4 of the 13 times I called over the next 36 hours, was told numerous times(on a sunny 95 degree day)that storms wouldn't allow service, was rerouted and disconnected, was lied to, told there was no way to reach any local office (wow! no wonder it is difficult to dispatch workers) and even told that the company has no supervisors to whom I could speak. Eventually, I was able to get through to a real person on the emergency gas leak report phone number and told that they would replace the meter if I stayed home AGAIN to wait for them (obviously they're under the delusion that no one else goes to their jobs either) How do I get compensation from a company that so blatantly lies to its customers? telling us that consolidating offices away from local areas would increase efficiency when in fact they have workers in Seguin Texas sitting idle because it is raining in Houston?!?! telling us they have no way of contacting area offices? telling us they have no heirarchy through which to channel a complaint? I know they are handicapped by having an all male board but surely someone could take a basic business course and start working on a few of these most obvious concerns; hopefully before enough people are so upset that they expect Centerpoint to operate fairly within a free market and deal with things the rest of the business world deals with - like competition.

CenterPoint Energy price gouging

The adjusted rate on my gas bill is 2700% more than my base rate. I was told the adjusted rate is the cost of the transportation of the gas from the supplier to my house, in other words, their cost of doing business. Why do they have the right to pass on their cost of doing business to the consumer? I don't mind paying the base rate or the service rate but this adjusted rate is exorbitant. The transportation of gas to and from point A to point B is a corporate cost and should be reflected in their cost of revenue, which reduces their earnings and thus, reduces their tax burden. On top of that, the ignorant ###ic customer service rep told me if I have a problem I should call the Texas Dept of Railroads. Is there a law firm willing to go up against CenterPoint in a class action suit with the consumers as plaintiffs?

CenterPoint Energy wrongful billing

I own a rental property in Pearland and turned the energy on for a family moving in the property. In late November 07, I called the CenterPoint Energy company several times to turn the gas off and change it to the new renters name, but they told me they could not place the account in the new renters' name unless the new renter personally called them. I said ok and asked them to give the new renters 7 days and if they did not convert the gas in their name to turn it off. I also contacted the new renter Robert Strong and he assured me he did transfer all utilities in his name, so i did not worry about a bill. I returned to Houston on 19 June and just as i stepped off the plane, i received a call from CenterPoint Energy to tell me there was a 973.39 bill that i needed to pay or they would turn the gas off. Mr. Strong had just broken his lease, due to illness I was told, and there were new renters in the home. They told me that Mr. Strong never put the bill in his name and I had to pay it or they wouldn't let the new renters #2 move in. I was upset that they had let the bill go for over 6 months and never before called me. The person who called me stated she was turning off the gas in two days. i asked how it had gone sooo long especially since she had my phone number from back in november and she said the bills went to the house. Neither Mr. Strong nor the actual company notified me of the large bills being accrued by Mr. Strong.
After several attempts to contact Mr.Strong, i talked with CenterPoint staff again. For some reason they acted as if they knew Mr. Strong and one lady said, "they didn't say the would pay the bill did they"? She had a very strong reaction to my stating I was awaiting a call from Mr. Strong's family again and had talked with his nice. I believe the billers were somehow related to Mr.Strong and do believe they waited his departure to tell me about the bill. Mr.Strong didn't mail the bill to me, of course because he had told me he changed it to his own name and the company didn't call me for 6 months because they didn't want me to know either. THIS COMPANY OR THEIR STAFF has defrauded me in not telling me the gas bill was not being paid until AFTER the renter moved out. There is something wrong with this picture as most bills must be paid within 30 days, etc. I would like a response to this complaint.

The state Gross Receipts Tax reimbursement to Centerpoint is unfair. The company should not require their customers to pay their gross receipts tax!

When you call customer service about this, they don't even know what you are talking about!

It is just listed on the bill as reimbursement of GRT - and guess what? No explanation on the back of what this is nor what percentage of your bill they are charging you for the reimbursement.

CenterPoint Energy scam and fraud

This company is a joke. We received a bill for $794.00, after never having received a bill for more than $300.00. We called the provider Stream Energy who told us Centerpoint they received a letter from Centerpoint stating they changed our meter. Centerpoint has not been to our home in more than 15 years other than to read the meter, and they claim they sent no such claim of a meter change to Centerpoint Energy.

One of these companies is behaving deceptively and based on my conversation with the Customer Service Representatives at both customer I have discerned that it is Centerpoint Energy. Their claim was that the meter reader probably made a mistake. This an unacceptable practice in that you, , the customer receives a bill that is some $500.00 to $600.00 more per month than you have allocated.

I would like for anyone else who is or has experienced this problem to contract me. I would like to see if we could get an attorney to look at filing a class action lawsuit.

What is the deal now. Everything is at it's lowest and yet the utilities are at there highest. Let's make sure the utility companies get all the money and everyone can't eat or pay their rent or even drive to work. What is UP?

They have 3rd party services that handle payments at a high charge but their website also has a local payment center webpage where you can save the fee and pay locally, but wouldn't you know it? it doesn't work! how convenient for them!

CenterPoint Energy Equipment maintenance/power outages

Centerpoint is incapable of maintaining it's equipment. Frequently, as often as three times a month, a line fuse blows in my neighborhood with a boom and the power is out again. Sometimes it is followed with a louder boom and the transformer is gone again. With the temperatures in the 90's and high humidity, no air conditioning represents a health risk. You cannot contact a live person at this company unless there is a fire or a power line down - the only option is voice mail with limited choices. When a line fuse blows as frequently as it does, why can't they FIX IT and keep it operating?

Yes, I very strongly agree with this situation. I live in a subdivision between Shepard Forest and Acers Home and our transformer always blows out when ever there is heavy rain and it has even burnt out two of my wireless web routers and a radio. Also there are about a dozen or so unkept trees that line our block that have over grown leaves that just rap around power lines and you can't even see the power poll it's self. Our power went out last Saturday morning when Ike hit; when I went out to inspect the damage on Sunday afternoon, there were downed, live power lines in my front yard. I had heard on the radio to report any downed power lines that seemed to be an emergency and I did, here it is a week later and no one from Centerpoint energy has even come out to take a look. I called them three times this week and explained to them that at one point the lines were sparking and that there were dried leaves and trees all around it and still nothing. I finally grabbed a rope, handsaw and a wooden pole and cleared the branches, leaves and parts of trees my self and removed the power lines my self. I got tired of calling Centerpoint so I called Reliant Energy directly and explained to them my situation and all they had to say was that I had a bill due on the 18th of this month, I told them that the weren’t getting one cent from me until my power was restored.

CenterPoint Energy poor service!

Came out to replace my meter. No problem just everyday meter change out program. No notice just changed it and left note to call to get gas turned back on. When I called they indicated that I must commit to stay at home all day for them to put me on the schedule. No time frame, no call before coming no service in any way.

Don't you love a monopoly!

When we were out of town last week, Centerpoint left a notice on our door saying that they had replaced our gas meter (with no prior warning) and that since no one was home they had left our gas turned off. This happened on Monday and we arrived home Thursday night after driving almost 700 miles that day. We found the notice and tried to call Centerpoint but since it was after 7 PM they were closed. My husband was rather irate with the thought of going to work early Friday with no hope of a hot shower. He left it to me to contact Centerpoint and get the gas turned back on and the pilot lights lit. I assured him that I would take care of it and promised it would be on when he returned from work on Friday. I will not go into all the details of numerous phone calls I made - starting at 8 am- except to say there were at least 5 and that each time I was assured that the gas would be on by 5 PM. The second call I made told me the only way I would not have service was that if no one over 18 was here when the service technician arrived and the last one told me that they even worked until 9 or 10 PM sometimes to finish all the work orders they had for that day.

My husband had told me to talk to a supervisor and so I tried. I asked for one in a call about 1 PM and was assured by Ms Evans that she could help me. She found my records and said a service man had been dispatched and would be here by 5 PM. I guess I am more naive than my husband because I believed her.

My husband tried his hand with Centerpoint when he arrived home about 4:30. After listening to all the recordings and pushing all the buttons he requested from a human to speak to a supervisor. He had probably been on the phone for at least 20 minutes at this point. He was on hold for OVER AN HOUR more to speak to a supervisor. When he had related the whole story he was finally told that there was nothing to be done at this point but that if his wife had persisted and talked to a supervisor in the afternoon that it could have been handled.

It is now 10:15 on Friday night and I assume we have no hope of hot water or heat until sometime Monday - if they deign to come then.

Don't you think that it would have made sense at the beginning of this mess to establish a time to replace the meter when the home owner (and customer, if that means anything) could be home so that service would not be interrupted?

I would also like to know why I am in the dog house here for believing what I was told a utility company customer service representative more than once. I guess I am an idiot. Anytime we need anything done we need to be very assertive and ask for a supervisor on the first phone call or forget it. If you are dealing with Centerpoint - good luck! Their customer service people are very well trained to keep you away from a supervisor with arguments and if that fails you might need to bring your lunch while you wait.

CenterPoint Energy failure to act promplty!

I had a home removed and am having another built on the lot in Houston, Texas. When trying to get service disconnected at the street for safety in demolishing the old house, Centerpoint first lost my request and then told me it would take another 6 weeks after I paid $300. However, it could be done in 1 week for $700. It ended up being 6 weeks between contacting them and getting the service terminated and that was only after I called to let them know the house was being torn down no matter what in a few days and that I would make sure the company had their phone number in case they hit a gas line.

Then, my final bill was never mailed and the only way I found it was to happen to check the old account online. At that point, there was a late fee assessed and because they did not turn the service off even though I requested it, I am being charged $25 for one ccf of gas! Unfortunately, the Texas Public Utilities Commission does not regulate gas. So, I am doing my part to let you know to expect problems with Centerpoint Energy.

We have had the distinct misfortune of having to deal with CenterPoint energy for a service disruption issue. We had one leg (110V) of our residential service interrupted, so all of our 240V devices (AC, Stove and Pool pumps) stopped working. Houston in the summer, without AC is literally a life threatening concern. Centerpoint made a temporary fix with a live power cable strung across the ground from the transformer to our utility panel. It stretches across our lawn, our neighbors lawn, and up and over the fence between our lots. It has now been that way for a week, and I called CenterPoint today, and spent an hour with a rude and completely ill-informed technician and an equally unhelpful supervisor named Shivana. The cable was accessible to both our dogs and my neighbors dogs and represents a safety risk to residents, pets landscape and pool service personnel. Their answer to my question of when they would effect permanent repairs was literally: "I have no idea, and stop asking". The fact that they literally have no idea when the cable would be buried as required by HOA covenants, speaks to their incompetence and belligerent disdain for their customers. I would literally lose my job if I said something like that to a customer of mine. But this is their privilege to treat their customers like they, CenterPoint are doing us a favor. This is what we get from unregulated utilities.

CenterPoint provides the power lines to my section in the Sterling Ridge area of the Woodlands, Texas 77382. The power was out for 5 weeks after Hurricane Ike. Every time the wind blows the power is knocked out for 8 to 10 hours. I am fed up with these screwballs.

Center Point Energy is the most dirty rat thieves I have ever known and made business with. I cannot believe after making business with your filthy dirty company for the past 4 years i get this kind of service. I have a son and my wife at home and it is very cold tonight. I would guarantee you that centerpoint energy makes this kind of disconnection on purpose because of customers like me that forget to pay. I would've atleast expect a note on my door indicating what I can do to connect my service back. Then I call at night after work to connect my service and the animated system states that everyone is off at night. Centerpoint energy does not even provide a 24 hour operator assistance. And I try paying my account online and it indicated that my I cannot received any payment because my account is a commercial account.
It is fine because I am not paying a dime for the bad service I received and I bet you will take legal action but what about what my family went through?.. We experienced a very bad service with centerpoint energy..

My wife my 1 yr old child and I went out of town for three weeks and didn't pay the gas bill. We had gotten home that night and the gas was still on. So the next day I wake up to pay it and I'm on my way and my wife calls me to say that they turned off the gas. So I called to see what it would take to turn it back on. There is an overtime fee of $30 so I paid the extra to get it turned back on that day. We wake up the next morning after having to wait up til 2 am no phone calls no gas man. I call them before normal hours today and tell them my complaint. I'm sitting here one hr later typing this complaint waiting. They told me it would be til Tuesday. Now on Sunday we have an artic blast followed by pineapple express so it's icy weather ahead for us. Now we have a generator back up at home but we still have no gas. So I complained enough and conference called my attorney with centerpoint then they decided they could have it turned on today (and they better or else :)). Long story short they try to give you the run around and screw you out of money. Poor communication skills in the company. If my gas is not turned on today I will change over to all electric.

There are a rip off--they keep slapping these ridiculously high bills on me--they take so long to resolve anything if they ever do. I am currently waiting to resolve an issue with them--I am documenting everything--last 3 bills in particular --2 for the exact same amount before I contact the media to expose them for what they truly are. I am saving all all my email interactions with them also.

I have 2 children ages 4years old also a 4 month old... My husband works out of town and sometimes we forget to pay the gas because its always so cheap we put it in the back... well as of this morning my gas has been turned off the bill was 37.00 i asked the guy if he could give me 10 mins for pay it so that i do not get charged the reconnection fee, he told me NO! He has been sent there to do his job. So I am a Mother that has a 4 month old that is not going to have CLEAN bottles tonight, due to everything being GAS in my home... When I called to make the payment, they are now charging me 60.00 to reconnect the gas! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Thats more then my Bill... I also asked to speak to a supervisor about this problem and they told me that there was nothing that they could do, its going to take them until tomorrow to turn it back on... NOW that the weather is getting cooler, i wonder if they would cut it off on Christmas day for a HIGH BILL, but come on now a 37 dollar bill? I also asked the supervisor since she is not helping me to get someone back out here today, if I could come to her house and use her hot water to wash bottles and to give my children a bath... ONCE again CENTER POINT IS RUDE, AND VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.

On Friday 24th the transformer in my apartment complex burned up (per Centerpointe claims department). At that time they attempted to install a new transformer. They installed a transform but in the same time created a surge of power through my apartment that melted my surge protected. Since the voltage was so high, it intern burned my TV, Comcast equiptment, Playstate 2 and another TV up internally. When I called to file a claim, Centerpoint claims adjuster Ms. Watkin, explained to me that the only thing they could do is replace the surge protector. She also told me I could not dispute her decision nor was there any mediation or abritration that could filed on my behalf. So here I sit with no electronic, that Centerpoint has destroyed, take responsibility for and will not replace them. Keep in mind that it has happened to several other residences in my complex. It wasn't my fault, it wasn't our complexs fault nor was it comcasts fault, but Centerpoint has us, thier customers, holding the bag. This is the worst company I have ever had to deal with.

CenterPoint Energy scammed by centerpoint

At about 1:30 PM, 11/13/07, a Centerpoint Energy contractor by the name of Jeff arrived to do the 'six point check' on our furnace. In past years I had gone through our local heating and cooling company, but this year decided to go with Centerpoint to save money and spread out the payments on my monthly gas bill.
This man was not in the house more than 15 minutes and discovered a crack in the heat exchanger which followed with the unit being red- tagging and turned off our gas. I called my husband who, in turn, called a contractor he knew from his years in home building. My husband simply began the conversation, 'Centerpoint is at my home' and the man on the other end of the phone interjected , 'and they red-tagged you'. Apparently, Centerpoint has a reputation of red-tagging for reasons unknown to me.
What angers me is that I will still be charged $98.50 for the six-point check and cleaning which wasn't done at all. He looked for a crack, found it and this is what I am being charged for. Seems a bit scammish to me. Seems to me I would be given a break since the unit was not cleaned, etc. By the way, none of us have been waking up or suffering with headaches and the furnace has been running for at least a month. We also have a lovebird right outside the room which contains the furnace and it hasn't dropped dead.
I called our local heating and cooling company and they remarked by stating that Centerpoint is a bit over cautious. At one of their other customers home whose furnace was cleaned and checked, noticed fingerprints on the mans furnace. The contractor asked if someone had been out to see the unit, the man said yes and that it was Centerpoint Energy one week earlier. Well, apparently his furnace was not cleaned as Centerpoint said they would do and they were only in the man's home for about 15 minutes. My local company will spend about 1 and1/2 hours on the furnace. Wish I would have spent the extra $30 and gone with my local company. Live and learn.

Since they sent a Tech to you house and most likley saved your life and that of your children maybe you might actually be appreciateve. The other company you called, they don't sound like very professional people. I wonder what they charged you and how they handle things when they find a cracked heat exchanger? I guess we will never know because your not going to be homest about it anyhow.

CenterPoint Energy Mistaken disconnection of service!

CanterPoint Energy gas division of Houston, Texas accidentally shutoff my gas services this morning for non-payment of my bill which was paid via their online billing services. I had my confirmation print out from my computer had the technician rang the doorbell and notified us. I always call a person at Centerpoint and relay this information but was unable to contact their services. Their voicemail stated they were too busy to take any phone calls right now so call back in thirty minutes so I e-mailed them. Now I have to reschedule reconnection for tomorrow and be available from 8 am to 8 pm a twelve hour time frame due to their mistake which they initially admitted but now their representative Tasha who reports to Michael Anthony is dancing around their even acknowledging this. This is a complete 180 from the customer service that I have received from CenterPoint Energy in the past 30 years. Tasha even danced around the suggestion that I go totally electric so I would not have to deal with them anymore. WOW! What poor customer service!

I set up my parents acct for auto bank draft and it did draft on the due date, however, according to them, it was returned so they are charging 20.00 for returned check. Bunch of bull, and they don't budge. I even have proof of when I set up on auto bank draft online. They are and will be getting in deep trouble. They won't even, out of courtesy, waive the charge! I mean, at this point we don't need their courtesy just for them to do what's just..but they will...mark my words.

Greetings et al,

well, i got my bill, and yep, for the 3rd, 4th, or 5th time, not sure, but the supervisor at customer relations was so concerned they will read meter tomorrow. i just went out and read it and they over charged me. there _estimated_ again read on 9/24/2007 was 3134. i read it today 10/1/07 and it was actually 3105. gotta love em, to keep from hating.
you have wasted my time now with this meter nonsense, now that i know what it's all about. you just want me to buy a new meter, to do away with the meter reader, and make us pay for it, a win, win formula. what a hoot.

have a nice day, but would somebody please read my damn meter, it's in the same place it's been for over 50 years. call me, i will show you where it's at. ...terry

Subject: DEAR METER READERS

I got one of those same letters in the mail. It was a 'Dear ...'
letter. For the past two months, CenterPoint Energy has attempted to read
your meter. As a result, your gas usage has been estimated. In accordance
with our General Rules and Regulations for Gas Service you must provide
access to our gas meters at all times for inspections, reading and testing.
Refusal to allow access to your gas meter can result in disconnection of
your natural gas service. ...then they go on to tell me how much i would
have to pay to get it turned back on, and then under that, they tell you how
you can fix this (i did not know it was broken), they then tell you about
your options, one of which is to buy a (ERT) remote read device, for
$180.00. or I can pay to relocate my meter. ...

DEAR CENTERPOINT ENERGY METER READERS,

MY METER HAS BEEN IN THE SAME PLACE FOR OVER 50 YEARS, of which you have
been reading. i have lived here all my life, it was my grandparents
homestead. we have no dogs, and you have been opening the gate all this
time (WE DID NOT PUT METER ON THIS SIDE OF FENCE, you did). SO, what's
changed ? Probably just more greed with the utilities. they want to do away
with meter readers with a more sophisticated meter, that will do away with
the meter readers (they claim), and they want the consumer to pay for it.
what a racket, and the utilities commission is about as broke and bought off
as the insurance regulators, tx-dot, and everything else. wouldn't it be
nice if the consumer could do the same and pass the cost of a new central
air and heat back to the electric and gas companies. where's justice, wheres
the utility commission $$$

CenterPoint Energy horrible customer service

On 09/04/2007, I found a representative from Centerpoint energy in my driveway who informed me that he was here to disconnect my gas service. The bill was being sent to another one of my properties on the other side of the country and I never realized that it was missing when the mail stopped being forwarded. To this date, I have yet to have a single call or a Voice Mail from Centerpoint to the phone number listed on my account to inform me that my service was about to be disconnected. Their answer to this issue was: well, our automated system calls customers but we don't leave a message or bother checking if the calls ever reached you... Seems to me like the system's only designed to deal with intentionally delinquent customers and not to resolve billing issues as is the case here. The reason I am contacting you to place an official complaint is twofold:

1. Monopoly practices (failure to reach a customer to try and resolve issues): Not leaving a phone message (while disconnect notices are being sent to an incorrect address) does not give a delinquent customer a way to know there is an issue with their account and to resolve it. My unchecked payment history should have been a good reason to suspect there was an issue somewhere... but when you are the only company around, you don't have to deal with customers the way others do, I guess!

2. Racketeering (They want to charge me $70 dollars to turn the gas valve back on). This simply ridiculous! Mind you that I owe them a measly $98 and that until 04/07, I made regular payments.

PS: At this point in time, I believe the only gas powered appliance in my house is the water heater, which I will be replacing with an electric one so I no longer have to use the ONLY gas providing utility company. I also want to make sure that you are aware f what appears to be monopolistic abuse from Centerpoint energy. This is so ridiculous and could have been avoided had the company bothered to have a live employee call me on the number they had on record, which seems like proper business practice.

How does one get rid of the monopoly CenterPoint Energy - that is the only way to get rid of their attitude in customer service. They know we can't use another gas company so they treat their customers like stupid little children who need to obey. Ban together figure out a way - break the monopoly that all natural gas providers have - give us a choice so we can spend our money on people who don't treat us like sh...

Centerpoint is phenomally rude, crude and socially unacceptable in dealing with the consumer. There is only one option in Harris County, Houston and that is Center Point and even they contract out the techincians to other companies. There is much too big a coverup and a wall imposed by Center Point for their services and when the "techincians" are not even Center Point Employees, what is really going on?

CenterPoint is a "Monopoly". Now what to do about it. This is something we've all known about for years. What happened to the Electric provider's is only an example. CenterPointe hires many minorities & other individuals that do not care about another, they are "self absorbed, Self Centered, & have zero compassion." I Agree that it's a business, but becoming a Lord over the Natural Gas, is a REAL problem. It NEEDS TO STOP.

Seems to me that you know that the gas or electric bill is due every month - regardless of receiving a bill in the mail/e-mail or not, you would know that a balance is due. What happened to personal responsibility? If I don't pay my rent, I expect that I'll be evicted. Don't pay my cable or internet, it'll be shut off. Why would it be any different for Centerpoint's services?

The criminals at Centerpoint has found a way (just like Enron) to steal from it's customers by not notifiying them that they are about to turn service off. I used to get a pink colored envelope notifying me also, but none was sent this time. I'm sure this scheme will bring in a few extra million dollars in their coffers. I too did not recieve that famous phone call they said they made 24 hours before disconnection. There was no message left and my caller ID goes back two weeks with absolutely no calls from Centerpoint.

These Centerpoint/Enron criminals has to be stopped.

CenterPoint Energy Very poor customer care service!

This past Thursday, I phoned Center Point Energy and reported a gas leak; a tech came out and found where the leaks were and informed me that they had to take our meter; they never told me on the phone that they might take the meter when I called; The tech told me that if we could have a plummer come out and fix the problem that we could still call them back and someone would bring the meter back before midnight. The plummer came and would not do anything until the gas company told him whether they were going to come back out. They said then that we would have to have a city inspector come out and then once we got cleared with him that they would bring the meter back.

Today the plummer came and fixed the problem at a charge of 1200.00 plus and once again we were told that the inspector would clear us and then the company would bring out the meter. We were told that the inspector informed Center Point at 245pm today and 5hours later we were still waiting for someone to come. I called the office again tonight at 8pm and was told they might could get to it but could not promise anything. We have been without heat for over 30 hours and both myself and my husband informed them of my health condition. And here it is after 11pm and no word back from them at all. They want the bill paid on time and we did everything we could do to do our part; my husband rushed out Thursday night and even got a new hot water heater. What does it take to get anything done; who do you call?

I am completely disgusted with Center Point Energy! Aren't monopolies supposed to be ILLEGAL in the US!? I would pay double to any other company in the world to not have to deal with these people! We are on our 3rd day without electricity in July (in Houston), with no sign of them even trying to get out here until Monday which is 2 days from now! We have been promised 6 different times over the last 2 1/2 days that they would be out within a 4 hour window, and alas, here we are still with no power. Being almost 8 months pregnant is of no concern to them whatsoever. I have never held so much contempt for a company before.

I live in who ppl would call the hood lol. But me I try to do the right thing. I was transferring to a larger apt and I called to have all my utilities transferred and I ran into a problem with center point. They informed me that there had not been gas on in the apt in over a year. And that I needed to get the apt inspected by the city. I called a plumber to make sure everything was good and the plumber says the gas is on. Call Center point and inform them of that. There is not need for an inspection. So I call center point back everyday for a week to try to get someone out to come check in out because I was moving the following Monday and all my utilities had been transferred. Finally Friday a customer service rep says to me. Wait the gas is really on? There's not suppose to be a meter there. I'm like what the hell? I been telling you guys all week. She proceeds to tell me the meter was removed for fraudulent use and she was going to call me back. This is on Friday. I received NO PHONE CALL not only that Centerpoint was closed over the weekend so I could not speak to anyone until the day of my move. By this time I'm pissed but not rude. So Center point comes out and says the damn meter was stolen. Like who does stuff like that.Counterpoint removes the stolen meter THAT DAY! Now...because the meter was stolen even though the gas has been on I still need a permit and the apt inspected. I call the plumbing company back they have a permit and send it to the city to used someone out to inspect that following morning. Now we are into Tuesday centerpoint received the inspection results but don't come to turn on my gas until Thursday. Its cold as hell and I can't feed my family. Centerpoint needs to get their stuff together. This was ridculious . I had to endure all of the extra be simply because some fool wanted to steal a gas meter. Their customer service sucks. Had the first customers service rep did their job correctly the first time I call a WEEK before my move I would have had my gas on when my family moved.

I've been a customer for 40+ years, and I am disabled. CenterPoint cut our gas off on Mar 23. I had my receipt for payment of the full balalce due of $514.96 the day before. The service man could have come to my door, and I would have shown him my receipt and he would have left my gas on. Instead he chose to break through my back gate, sneak in and cut the gas off behind our backs (three of us were home that day). Today, April 16, I decided I'd had enough of heating pans of hot water to use for bathing and such, and decided to have my gas turned back on. By chance, I came across a letter from CenterPoint dated Mar. 26. It stated: You previously received an incorrect invoice from CenterPoint Energy. The meter reading used to measure you consumption of natural gas was not accurate...Again, please note that the adjusted balance after all corrections is $0.00.
I call and tell the rep I want my service restored. She said: Your meter has been removed. What? It was removed April 14, when the tech came to read the meter and it showed 93 CF of usage since the gas was turned off. WHAT? Listen, you, in March you wrote me about your inaccurate readings, and today you're accusing me of stealing nearly $100 worth of gas! When I would normally use less than half that amount in a Houston spring IF I FREAKING HAD ANY GAS SERVICE AT ALL! Liars. CenterPoint sucks.

How is it possible or legal that there isn't any other company to provide natural gas in the city of Houston? Centerpoint turned my gas off when by mistake I underpaid my $915 bill by $50. I own a restaurant and was told that the only way that I could have it turned back on is by paing the difference and a $61 reconnect fee oh yeah and a $4, 000 deposit! WTF?! This is total maddness. These creeps need to be put out of business.

Centerpoint Energy Hires Idiots For Supervisors!

When calling Centerpoint Energy and asking to speak to a supervisor, pray you don't get connected to either a Ruben Aguirre or his buddy Eric Briseno (dumb and dumber). It took me a 2.5 hour conversation with these fine individuals to convince them I had no gas whatsoever. After countless times of being placed on hold, the [censored] named Eric finally figured out my gas had been disconnected by mistake! He promised me again and again he would send a tech out immediately! Well guess what [censored] Eric? The tech didnt show up till midnight! Great job Dumb and Dumber! Both of you must have been hired by the same idiots!

Everyone,

NEVER CALL CENTERPOINT WHEN YOU SMELL GAS! CALL YOUR PLUMBER! CENTERPOINT WILL COME OUT IN A TIMELY AND FRIENDLY MANOR TO TAKE YOUR METER, ONLY TO GUARANTEE THAT THERE WILL BE NO PROBLEM GETTING YOUR METER BACK.. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! LIARS! LIARS! LIARS! BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! I hope you are reading this and its not too late!

We smelled gas Saturday night, called Centerpoint they came out at 9.45pm and said yep we smell gas and took our meter... Thanks. I called a plumber Sunday, set up a service call for Monday morning, they fixed the problem pulled the permit, the Bellaire, inspector came out at 1.30pm called in the OK to Centerpoint at 2.42pm (they sent me the email response from Centerpoint - time marked) Centerpoint did not get it into their system until 3.55pm -- I was calling every 30 minutes. (you have to call to tell them you want your gas back on - amazing). Unlike others on this list they actually told me no problem the meter WILL be back tonight! Great so we wait, wait, wait and wait till 9pm when I call, yet again asking how late they would be? At that point I was informed that the guy had already stopped by my house, called both phone numbers, cell and house, no one answered the phone or door and the lights where OFF...AMAZING BECAUSE ALL THE LIGHTS WHERE ON, INCLUDING ABOUT A MILLION CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, THE PHONE DID NOT RING. These guys are liars, they have NO regard for you or your kids. I would like to see Standish or McClanahan without heat, stove/oven, hot water, clothes dryer etc.. their nannies/maids would not know what to do!

We have to have competition for Centerpoint, (DEREGULATE) its the only way to improve the terrible service provided by this company.

I would agree with all the complaints posted, my own personal issue with them is, after years of services, I had one payment that wasen't received two days after it was due, a nd our services was disconected! No late notice, nothing, just disconnected! When I called Centerpoint to pay the bill, that I had already paid through mail, I was told it was going to be a $60.00 Reconnect fee + $100.00 Depoist, all of this over a $22.54 bill! but wait there's more, after I paid almost $200.00 with my debt card, I was then told they couldn't send a tech out until the next day, even though I was on the phone with them at 12:05 p.m. and when they did send a tech out, the appt would be between 8:00 a.m - 8:00p.m .. and someone who is 18 years of age or older has to be there. I wanted to know why, their reason is because " the tech has to do a household check to make sure everything is working right" everything was working just fine before my services was cut off. I am very upset with this company, and to make things worse, I think they are the only gas providers in my area, so that means I am stuck with them!-

They mis-read my meter and mis-charged me over $1, 600 in March and turned off my heat It took me weeks to get the heat back on after paying the erroneous charge. they then acknowledged that the charge was in error but I STILL haven't gotten my money back and it's AUGUST!

This company's abuses are CRIMINAL and they need to be shut down!
