Afni collections notice

My ex husband received a collection notice for a cell phone that was in my name while we were married. I called them and the first answer i got was that they could not release information to me because it wasnt my debt, second phone call the rep was very pleased that I was trying to settle my debt and took a payment, the third call said the account was added to bankruptcy? and the fourth, fifth and sixth said again that they could not release any information to me or him?

These people are absolutely nuts and their policies and responces change by the hour?

Total crap that I just received a collection notice for a phone # I have never heard of. It freaked me out until I found these other postings. I'm curious to hear what has happened with other cases. Please post notices. Seriously its $160.86; who can't pay that when some people spend that on dinner.

it was a bill for a phone number in New York City we hadn't had for years. And the actual phone company didn't exist anymore--it was swallowed up by Bell Atlantic.

I called the Bloomington, IL police department. They told me that AFNI purchases noncollectable debts (statute of limitations has run out, etc) and attempts to collect on them. DO NOT CALL AFNI. When it comes to legal matters, as this is, PUT IT IN WRITING. It looks like they check credit scores just to scare people into thinking they'll report negatively on their credit.

Here's what the FTC has to say about it:

"Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. "

Then just jump to The FTC's next step: "If you send the debt collector a letter stating that you don’t owe any or all of the money, or asking for verification of the debt, that collector must stop contacting you. You have to send that letter within 30 days after you receive the validation notice. But a collector can begin contacting you again if it sends you written verification of the debt, like a copy of a bill for the amount you owe."

So play the game. No attorney needed--you likely owe nothing. Immediately send them a letter saying you don’t owe any or all of the money, and turn the tables: demand verification of the debt. That may be enough to stop them. But check the statute of limitations--whether it ever could have been your debt or not.

If it's run out, send them a stiff note quoting the exact law under which statute of limitations has run out, and tell them that you consider it a closed matter and that they should cease contact with you immediately.

If they contact you again, they're possibly in violation of FTC law. Note the date and time and send a letter to your county and state consumer protection agencies, as well as to your state's and The Illinois Attorney General's Office, who is likely very familiar with AFNI, about their unfair collection practices and harassment.

Read more here:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre18.shtm

No attorney, just a few stamps, gets rid of AFNI. Watch for a website that generates the letters to be coming soon.

I too got a letter from AFNI (at my home address with a name similar to mine), I called Direct TV and gave them the account number, they did have that name with a debt turned over to AFNI. I called AFNI, they advised they use a SOFTWARE to search for similar names and mail them a letter, like the one I received. They said they did not have the Soc. Sec. number of that person, and since it was not my name they would remove me from the mailing list. Since he said it was a software search result it seemed that they will remove my address, or am I kidding myself, as I have read others that say the same and then continue with additional info a person gives. I'll wait and see if I get more letters. I read in another posts conflicting info that they DO and DO not send (unless you make a payment), to the collection agency. In my case it wont be my name and shouldnt be my SS. So ?

I had recieved an collection bill from afni collection agency concerning an overdue account of $112.92 from Sprint . I 've never had an account with this company and my last name was mispelled. I called the number that they gave me and waited for some time and they never answered the phone. On the letter they was wanting the last four digits of my social security number. This company is phishing for information. I'm glad that I've found this website and seen all of the complaints about this company.

I received the exact same letter from AFNI as everyone else & the phone carrier was Verizon. I was a identity fraud victim & have a letter from my local police department from the investigator who handled the case which of course I forwarded to AFNI to prove that although the person is real & exists (me) the account was taken out fraudulently by someone else under false identity & basically they bought an account to collect on that couldn't be collected on! Unless they want to try & track down the criminal who gave all MY INFO.

I thought that would easily suffice especially since all the evidence including time of the incident & time of collection matched with area code of phone # & city the criminals who have already been released all resided. Easy case, right? Wrong! They still sent me 30 days later a letter stating, "Nope we still think this is you, pay us $512.00".

Personally I think they prey on the fact that you'll get scared & fold & pay the amount. And collection agencies wonder why they have a bad name?

I too have received the same collection debt. These folks are terrible. I am going to call the AG in my state! I called them up and they basically get mad at you on the phone. I let the guy have it. He told me to write a letter to them explaining my dispute. I will do that, but I think it's pretty ridiculous to be wasting my time on this.

AFNI WILL HIT YOUR CREDIT FILES. AFNI hit my credit files even after I had timely requested Debt Verification and disputed the claim for a Qwest phone service account I've never had (never even lived in Aurora, CO where the service appears to have been provided). Tried calling AFNI and only got the recording. I'm hoping my state will file class action as IL and MN have done. Attorney is reviewing my situation.

I just received one of these bills today stating I owed money to Qwest. I've never even had their service before. I knew something was awry right away. I tried to call the billing number for Qwest listed on the bill and the number was out of order. I then tried to call the toll free number listed on the bill and only got a recording directing me to the Afni website. I knew right then and there it was a total scam. There appear to be comments about these people dating back at least 2 years claiming they're scammers. What I want to know is how they haven't been arrested yet?

So now I have to take time out of my day to make sure this doesn't damage my credit? And how is it even possible for scammers like this to be able to damage someone's credit? That's just insane.

I too recently received a bill from AFNI for a phone # that if I ever had it would be over 10 years old. Coincidentally the name on it was also spelled wrong. I ran a credit report & nothing. I think I will not do ANYTHING at all. For one thing they don't even know how to spell my name.
Personally I think their bills are completely made up, based on oldaccounts & just hoping people will pay off the bills rather than try to deal with them.. & even if it only works a few times they still make money. The problem is is no one is complaining here:
http://search.bbb.org/Results.aspx?n=Afni&add=&c=&st=&z=

not a single complaint registered with the better business bureau.

I just received a notice from Afni Collections today that I owe $386 to All Tell. I've never had an account with All Tell. Unfortunately, I called them before I found this site. The "agent" tells me the account is from 1998 and that it is associated with my Social Security number. She would not tell me what that SS number is, of course. She also stated it was for a land line which had been paid regularly until the last bill. I told her I found this all fascinating as I have never lived at the address in question, never had that phone number, and that when I checked my credit report through all three major reporting agencies, this charge is not on any of my credit reports. She has the nerve to tell me it hasn't been reported to the credit bureaus yet! I demanded that they send me all the information on this supposed bill. I'll be contacting the BBB, the FTC and my State Attorney General.

Thank you all for posting this information. It is much appreciated.

Obviously they aren't a very smart collections agency. Look at the number of complaints referring to bogus charges. I'm not sure who you are but if they have actually purchased this debt and are attempting to get paid for it then this means that afni has obviously been duped, big time! I fail to see how that is our fault? I'm not going to pay them for something I have never owed? Would you? If so then go ahead and pay my "discounted" debt while your at it. afni is a HUGE scam operation and that's that. End of story.

Afni false account information

I attempted numerous times (8/07, 11/08 and 1/9) to inquire about a fraudulent account and charges from Amp'd mobile in the amount of $1, 179.68. I asked how to dispute charges and file an affidavit proving that the charges were never made by me. The collection company (AFNI) stated that there is no affidavit processing and I am responsible for all charges. I attempted to reach another representative on a different date and have received several messages that the customer service line is experiencing difficulty and cannot take my call. The last attempt to contact AFNI was on 1/3/08 at 10:48 am ct.

Afni T-Mobile

This company has sent a notice stating that my husband owes T-Mobile $ 1, 061.73, from 2002 we have never used T-Mobile and we have had the same service since 1999 which is not T-Mobile. When I asked them to send me proof such as a signature they stated that by law they do not need to and that they had a photo ID when I asked for them to send me such proof because to have that, they have to have a signature no just sends a photo ID out to anyone. She stated that she did not need to.

I stated then you are just letting anyone do things in anyone elses name and she hung up the phone on me. I can not beleave that the law would allow people to do such things.

If they have proof let them show it, if not do not harrass hard working people to scam them out of their money I know that the only cell company we have had is our current company which we have been with going on 10yrs.

Afni is well known for this. Record all phone calls. Tell them that since you have already told them the the charge is bogus, and that they cannot provide any proof, you will no consider each telephone call to you a "consutlting call" with $50 fee per call. Again, be sure to record the calls and tell them that you are recording them. Inform them that if they if they cannot provide proof, you will see them in court to collect your fees. If the calls continuie, follow through and take them to small claims court, suing them for harrassment as well as $50 for each phone call.

Afni Scam Debt Collector

I received a bill from them from 2017 for 35.00. I sent them a letter like this one http://www.creditinfocenter.com/forms/sampleletter9.txte5c
In return I got a letter from them telling me they made a mistake and they will take no further action. It was all very simple and cost me about $5 to sent the letter return receipt request. I realize I was lucky they only wanted $35.00 from me. I almost paid them just to get rid of them. It was all very simple in the end. And I filed a complaint with my State Attorney General and the FTC. By law you have 30 days to dispute any charges. The only way to keep the rats in the sewer where they belong is to fight back.

My wife received a notice of collections for an Alltel bill from this Afni collections agency for nearly $800 for some cell phone service I was supposed to have had. I HAVE NEVER USED ALLTEL in the 10 years I have been using cellular phone connections. This has got to be some sort of fraud scheme going on. I recently received a loan to have a home built, pay ALL my bills on time and then some, and take great pride in my AAA credit history. I have never heard of or seen or have ever received anything from Alltel EVER. What the heck is going on Afni? Also, the day after my wife received the notice I called the toll free 866 # to dispute this matter; the number would not go through. Some sort of funny business you guys got going Afni. I am currently serving in Iraq and if this matter is going to go further Afni will be hearing from my JAG officer faster than they can accuse me twice of owing Alltel one red cent!

Received collection letters from AFNI regarding Verizon telephone service for multiple accounts dated from 1994 to 1998. I really doubt the authenticity of the charges since common sense business practices would not allow a customer to open successive account while carrying balances from previous accounts. I can't understand how Verizon would open a new account for an individual while have an unpaid balance from a previous account.

I'm afraid this is a scam!

I think I have everyone beat. This company sent me a letter saying that I owe Verizon $944.84. Here is the funny part, I lived in NY about 25 years ago and never had a phone because I moved out my mothers home to NJ and had a phone under my married name. If anyone finds a lawyer that is interested in suing these ### for doing something like this PLEASE post it.

I didn't even get a letter from Afni. I just found their entry on my credit report last year. It was for a piddly $39 on a cable bill that I had paid in full to another collection agency 2 years before. They never sent me any documentation on the debt, just a letter saying it was verified. To make matters worse, the cable company was bought out by a different company several years ago. I contested it on my credit report just recently and got a letter saying that it had been verified with the agency. So now that it's on my credit, how do I get it off? I'm so glad I googled Afni tonight. I haven't found a single positive thing about them and I'm really glad to find that this is just a scam.

I received a collection notice from Afni stating that I owe over $700 for a Verizon bill I had in NYC over 7 years ago. I had dealt with Verizon directly on this matter when I first received the bill from them. The statute of limitations is up on this bogus debt. When I explained that to the Afni rep. he said there was "no such thing" as a statute of limitations. They are obviously a scavenger debt collector. I will not have my good credit ruined by these thieves!

I received a Collection Notice from Afni, Inc. on 6/29/07 saying that I owed Verizon California Inc. $268.43 on a phone number that I had 10 years ago. So I called them and they told me that my Verizon account had been turned over to them for collection. My first thought was to pay the amount owed or at least a settlement amount, as I did not want this to reflect on my credit. After some thought I asked AFNI, to send me proof/validation that I did owe this account to Verizon, and they told me they would be the end of July. I did not get proof from them, instead I received another letter dated 7/17/07, asking for payment again. This time I decided to call Verizon and have them check their records for any amounts outstanding that I may have owed them. They could not find any records of any amounts I owed them. They told me to call AFNI, back and speak to the Verizon liasion, which I did call them and they told me anyone could help me and that the Verizon person there is for cell phones only and not land line phones. I know now that I do not owe this money after reading other complaints filed on behalf of this Company, they were just trying to see how much money they could get from me. I am glad now that I did not send them any money. I am going to write that letter to them, disputing this debt that I found on this complaint board.

These people call us non-stop all day long, 10, maybe 12 times a day. They tell my husband he owes for service he had with a cellular carrier, Alltel. They kept telling him he owed for this service, several hundred dollars, but he never had an Alltel account except back when they had the unlimited service and you pay as you go with that, you don't pay, you don't have service, you would never get the chance to have a bill that high, or a bill at all cause you had to pay first if you wanted service. That is the ONLY account him or I ever had through that company. This Afni Company (if they are even a legitimate company) is constantly harassing us by phone, yet we have NEVER received any kind of correspondence by mail from them. they have tried to talk my husband into a "Sell your soul to the devil" offer on several occasions, and have attempted to obtain his banking information this way...you know, "if you pay us x amount right now we will forgive the entire debt" and when that didn't work, they want to throw threats out there of being sued, etc... This has to STOP. Last I knew it was illegal to harass people, any people, anywhere. Please help.

My daughter had an account with Cingular many years ago, which, after the telephone stopped working, she canceled and went with another company. In addition, at that time, she was a minor. This happened over 5 years ago. Mysteriously, Cingular has no record of the cancellation and has turned the account over to AFNI which has started harassing her for a payment in excess of $450.00, which she does not owe. They even lied to her, saying she had made a payment on the account within the past year or so, knowing that the collection, if valid, would be barred by the statute of limitations. Despite repeated demands for some type of verification and itemization, all requests have been ignored. I would like to hear from anyone else that has had problems with this company, as I am gathering information for a formal complaint with the Florida Attorney General's Office for investigation.

Afni Zombie Debt

Buying "zombie" and "false" debt from AT&T, MCI, and AT&T Mobility! We also need to file complaints with the companies that are selling our information! Accordiing the the FBI's definition of money laundering, these cases would seem to apply, here, because most of the monies they are collecting are NOT going to the original companies to begin with! Check it out on the FBI's website! Also I've reported the companies that have sold our information to the Attorney General's Office, Georgia State Consumer Protection Agency, The Governor of Georgia, and to Peter King, director of Homeland Security. Who knows who and where OUR information is being sold to! This is real scary! I've also e-mailed Nancy Polski, Speaker of the House, demanding that something be done about this! I would highly suggest we all take similar action! It may help change things to help secure our personal information! Good Luck everyone, our country is going where, and what's with the handbasket?

Afni Fraudulent collection on fabricated &final bill&

I checked my credit recently and found a collection from a company I'd never heard of - Afni. This collection account dropped my FICO score something like 70 points - MAJOR damage. This makes it almost impossible for me to get new credit, and could cause my current credit holders to increase my rates.

I investigated further by calling Afni (http://www.afniupsourcing.com/). I finally got someone on the phone who claimed I owe Amp'd Mobile $262. Amp'd Mobile went out of business in 2007. I paid my final bill. The only thing I ever got from them in the mail was the bankruptcy notice for the company. Not only was my final bill paid - I was on auto-pay all along with this company. So if there was additional money due they certainly could have simply taken it out of my account!

I explained to Afni that I paid my final bill, and that now they had ruined my credit AND wanted me to pay money that was never due for a company that is out of business. Of course, the response was "This is not my concern." I was offered a "deal" of paying it off for $150. Of course this would not remove the entry on my credit report - only change it to paid. If you know about credit you know this doesn't particularly do anything meaningful or positive to your score. So ... even if I allow them to extort this money from me - I still suffer from this lie for 7 years!

I've decided to fight it. I called Afni back several times [protected]). I told them I'm disputing the debt and that I wanted proof faxed to me. After being told by a rude agent that they would fax the "numerous" bill statements they have, they instead faxed me a letter on Afni letterhead essentially saying "This letter confirms you owe us $262." Uh, no. I called back. Finally reaching someone polite (on try 4), she informed me that I did open a dispute, and that Afni will now investigate the account. If there is any proof (which she said the phone agents don't have access to!), they will mail it to me within 30 days.

These people are, clearly, liars. Three agents told me they had my bill copies on their screen. Now they don't know if they have proof or not. Either way - the bottom line is - step one is call and dispute the validity of the debt.

If (when) this does not resolve it I intend to make complaints to the Attorney Generals of all involved states and take any other measures necessary to ensure it is resolved.

I pay my bills, and I've spent many years building good credit. Too many years to have it ruined by a dishonest collector like Afni. I have to imagine that there are many interviews on the net outlining Amp'd's disastrous billing system - including an admission by the company's own CEO - will strengthen my case.

I had a very similar experience. AMPD was horible, I changed to Sprint and cancelled in April and they kept biling me despite numerous calls, I disputed with my credit card and they refunded the charges because AMPD couldn't support them. ANFI sent me a collections letter, I replied and now there is a collection item of about $80 dropping my FICO from about 750 to about 660 and costing me a mortgage. This is extortion and no protection against consumers because there is no consequence for their actions. ANFI knows that people probably wont take teh time and effort to file a class action and they will play games with "missing" paperwork to make things as difficult as possible.

Afni Fraudulent Collection Account

I recently checked my credit report because of the fact that someone tried to use my name before and so I made it a must to regularly check my credit for fraudulent activities and I noticed that I had a new collection filed which was by AFNI, Inc. Now, I don't know who the heck these people are but they claim that I have a bill for Verizon for a little over $162.00. I know that this bill is fraudulent becasue I've had phone service with my cable company for as far back as 2000! Before that I lived with my sister-in-law for about 6 months at her place where she had her own phone service and before that and right before getting married I lived with my mom who also had her own phone service. So when was all of this to have taken place? The thing is most of the people on her received a letter, AFNI didn't even send one to me, they just put the bill on credit. I'm writing to the State of New Jersey Attorney General's office, the FTC, the BBB and to the credit bureaus requesting an investigation as well as requesting them to remove the account. What's even more crazy is that I have a fraud alert on my report that's supposed to prevent any new accounts from being opened in my name without my notice and is supposed to also prevent any new collections from being filed without first contacting me to verify the account. None of these steps were taken and I was not informed by mail or by any other form as they are supposed to do legally. I suggest that people also make it a habit to regularly check your credit reports for fraudulent activities and don't let people like AFNI get away with commit such unethical acts.

Afni VERIZON BILL

Today I found a collection in my credit report from a collection agency called Afni, Inc. alleging I owed $50.00 from 6 years ago - 2002. Verizon has provided my phone service for the past 10 years and I don't believe I have ever missed a payment. They never once mentioned I owed them a cent from 1998 and even I overpaid my bills to an even dollar amount. I had no problem ever with Verizon. in 2005 when I received the letter of collection from AFNI I contacted them, When I called Afni, Inc, a particularly rude young female told me she wasn't interested in anything I had to say, while I was asuring her that Verizon conferm that I owe nothing other than the last bill, And if there was any charge it would appear in my regular statement during the period AFNI Inc. claiming [protected] ) with no exact date. Also at least my telephone service would affected if I have any unpaid charges, while the same line and same company. So with her mean way of communicating I hung up and disregard the collection claim as advised by Verison. Now about 4more years they came back and hurt my credit report. I totaly disagree to pay off any false claim even if it's only One dollar.
I'm sending this complaint because I'm sure that I feel I'm not the only one. I hope you can take the right action to protect myself and the public from these fraudulant acts.

My story is the same as all the others.. AFNI sent me a notice for a wireless phone bill from 6 years ago. I did not believe it was my account. When I asked them to verify the debt they sent some vague, cobbled together 'statement'. They were unable to provide my original billing address, contract dates, account number, etc.. I mean, anyone can put together a bogus statement like that. I did a little research on AFNI and found numerous complaints exactly like mine and yours, with all the same characteristics. Further investigation revealed that in July of '08 the Minnesota Attorney General's office filed a lawsuit against AFNI, Inc for fraudulent collections practices. Bottom line is, IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE YOU OWE THIS BILL, FIGHT IT. I filed a complaint with my A.G. Consumer protection office. It took about 2 months, but AFNI finally gave up their ruse and sent a letter stating they were closing their account on me and removing the negative report on my credit. My bill was only about $35.00 but, the principal is worth all the time, efforts and insults. And, the more people give them a hard time, the sooner these crooks will be out of business.

Afni Predatory collections practices

I, too, am a victim of AFNI, Inc., Bloomington, IL. It started in 9-2006 when I finally called about a collections letter for a cable company I didn't recognize. It turns out that it was a company I had service with 18 years earlier (21 now)! I told the man I talked to that I wouldn't be paying it because it was so old and that I didn't believe I even owed the money. The next week it was on my credit report as being "opened in 10-2006". I filed 2 reports with FTC and disputed it with Equifax twice. It's still on my credit report. Equifax investigated and came to the conclusion that it is a "valid debt". In April of 2008, I called the company again and talked to a "supervisor" who told me the final bill was sent in 11-2003. I moved from that town in 1990 after stopping all services! In the meantime, they have charged me $73 more for a Qwest bill that I don't owe and that is now on my report as well. I just filed my 3rd complaint with FTC as well as a complaint to the Oregon Attorney General. I don't know what it will take to get these people to stop. It seems that they can charge people with any amount of money for any bogus debt! In my case, they are making up false debts from companies that I actually have done business with far, far in the past. Maybe we can band together to stop them. Do the words "Class Action Lawsuit" sound good to anybody?

I am currently fighting with AFNI over a bogus bill from Frontier Wireless. When I cancelled my DSL service with Frontier they claimed I owed them a $ 75 cancellation fee even though I had completed the 12 month term the fee was applicable to. They also billed for 15 days beyond the date my service was disconnected. AFNI is taking the position that if Frontier billed it I owe it. They don't seem interested in listening to any explanation to the contrary.

I never had any service from Qwest nor Afni. They appeared on my Experion annual report recently.
Peculiar, I'd had Verizon wireless service only since moving to Arizona in 2007.Most people in this small communty are on wireless phone service; they don't duplicate telephone service adding landlines-the cost is not needed, necessary.
Qwest has the worst reputation on service and a mass of slamming reports in this area and other areas all over the internet. The internet is loaded with complaintants sites about Qwests illegal practices and Afni's illegal practices.
This Afni was from Bloomington, IL and did not provide a telephone number on my credit report. I did a lot of deep research on the internet finding out how Afni uses fraud to make-up non-existent accounts and bill anyone they want for them, and Qwests greedy extra profitteering account-making -up(fraud) as they know many people don't care to have landlines.
I've never received anything in the mail in a form of a bill, th like from either company, never called either, won't do business ever withe either. I gave the credit bureau much information and they are investigating the fraud right now.
As always on other issues, I will continue to post and repeatedly post smearing Qwest and Afni on all internet consumer complaint sites. And write to the Attorney General, FCC, State Senators and Rep in Arizona
Cordes Lakes, Arizona
Would be very glad to participate in any class action suit applicable! Send the info!

Afni fraudulant charges/collections

I recently received a letter from a collection agency called afnicollections stating that I owe an outrageous amount of $893.65. Now I know for damn sure I don't owe any money to any phone company in any amount. I tried calling this company to find out about these allegations, but could not get through. After trying to call this number all day, I decided to go to this website to see how else I could get through. after seeing all these complaints of fraud charges/collections I am convinced that this letter is bogus. shut these guys down!

We just received a bill in the mail stating we owe money for a telephone bill from a carrier we never had, nor ever had that telephone number . We had recently moved, so wondering if that somehow triggered scam in the mail . Hopefully, others do not send people money and realize it's a scam collection. I notice other complaints have been a few years, so they must have started back up.

I am so glad I looked this number up, b/c I got a bill in the mail for my husband saying he owes money, for QWEST...for some phone number, but I'm pretty sure that the phone he had there was not in his name, even though they had the phone, I am almost positive it wasn't in his name, because his mom put everything in her name. Sooo...this was when he was in college. Had I not looked this up, I would have called, and probably believed them, because my husband is in Iraq.

I also received a bill for a BOGUS amount of money for a past due bill from a "phone company" that I have NEVER used. 8 years old. Unfortunatly, I gave up important information that I shouldn't have never given up. 'THEY' have too much correct info. to think it's not real. These people are wrong, and should be investigated before any additional info. is given up. I closed out all of my exsisting accounts with currant companies and was forced to change everything. Ironically, I have family in law enforcement in Illinois. We may never know the out come, but it's a start.

It's a running scam as you see by the other comments. Ignore them or take them to small claims court and collect triple damages for harrassment.

We received a bill from them. I am very picky about my bills and accounts. I keep a well filed system. I could not find any where on any of my spreadsheets dating 8 years back this account number or this amount. I plan on calling them tomorrow, I am glad I read this so now I am prepared not to give any information. Thank you B, Dallas

Afni fraud

I received a letter stating that I owe AT&T Mobility $374.57 and that I had service with them in Killeen, TX in 2006. I paid my bill in full including early termination fees and moved to NC in November of 2005 and obtained service with Alltel in 2006. I contacted the company to dispute the complaint only to find out that they have all of my information including my social security number. As of now I am going to contact my attorney and give him all of this information.

I just recieved a bill June 2008 from Afni Inc. collection agency stating that I own Verizon $325. I call Verizon and someone used my social security number to set up this account. It was a number and address in a different state. I have never had Verizon service before! I don't know how this could have happened. Afni is no help at all, when I called them they said they would send out a fraud packet but instead sent another copy of the bill. I finally contacted Verizon and I need a police report plus tons of other document just to prove my innocents.

Afni Fraudulent Collections Attempt

I am having an insanely difficult time remedying a bogus collection attempt by Afni, which operates in Bloomington, IL. Afni has placed a damaging credit item on my credit report, but has failed to provide me with any details of the debt. The Denver telephone account in question was paid in full and closed five years ago.

There is nothing to verify the alleged debt for me, though Afni had no problem verifying the debt for the credit reporting agencies when I disputed the account.

After requests on Sept 11 and Sept 12 (telephone and written) for Afni to mail me a list of itemized charges nothing was sent. I called them on Oct 13, and they informed me that a "cease communication" request kept them from communicating at all, despite the fact my certified letter (which they received) prohibited phone calls BUT expressly requested a mailed paper copy of the bill. They assured me today that it would be sent out by USPS as per my initial request.

My credit report was fantastic before this. Now it is damaged, and I still don't know what the alleged debt is for. I attempted to contact the original creditor, but they have no account details since Afni purchased the alleged years-old debt.

Additionally, Experian reported that this debt was "verified and updated, " which scares me. I have not made any payments on the fraudulent debt, though it seems Afni is trying to re-start/re-age the time limit on their collection efforts. I have neither time nor credit reporting protocol on my side. This country's economic woes are bad enough without Afni's antics and I can't believe they are allowed to operate in this manner.

If I have any recourse, or if Afni's business practices are being addressed, I'd love to know.

Take care,
Jeremy

Afni False collection attempt

This company sent me a bill claiming I owed $128.37 for a Quest bill made in 2002. I immediately called them to request more information because I have never had a Quest account. They gave me an address and I told them I had never lived at that address. They said that is not the service address, it is my last known billing address. I told them I have never lived at the "last known billing address" they gave me. I then asked if I could call Quest to find out more informaiton and they said that Quest would not give me the information because they had purchased the debt from them. I asked them for the address of service and they said they did not have that information. They said if I disputed the bill to go online and submit they dispute. I went online and put in my Afni account number. I t would not bring up my account because they did not have the last four digits of my social security number correct. I called them and told them they had the wrong person because they did not have my real social security number. They asked my what the last four digits were and I gave them fake numbers to see what would happen. They miraculously informed my that they had transposed some numbers and it was right now. This company needs to be shut down! I am going to send them disput letter and am notifying the FTC. These scammers need to be stopped.

I had a very similiar problem with this company. My husband had a credit report done recentally and this Afni Inc. were on it for an internet company we currently have. After 3 phones calls to this company, the first call, they were asked to send a confirmation to us via through email or faxed to us. Nothing, so the next day I called back, and was told by someone else that they cannot send us a confirmation of payment because the account is still active...Okay I have never heard of a collections company that wont send a confirmation or, wont verify that the payment was recieved.
I decided to check with the internet company on this matter, to see if we have ever had a bill sent to collections, and explained to them the situation, the internet company pulled up a summary of our account, and checked they database for any inquiries of another account in my name that had been active at one point. Nothing the internet respresentive even gave me a summary of what he found to send to us, with limitations of course if we have to make legal actions towards this debt collector.
After my conversation with the internet company I then called the Afni Inc back told them "I need a confirmation by today to verify this has been taken care of. I then told them, that I have contacted the internet company and that they DO NOT enlist any of their credit reports to any company by your name, and if this payment has NOT been confirmed by you within 24 hours, I will be taking legal actions to get you guys off my credit report...

I will also be filing a complaint in the FTC for the Act. Fair Debt Collections

Afni Scam and rip off

Wow! I really thought I was alone with my AFNI issues until I see all these reports. I've been monitoring my credit reports almost weekly for the past several months due to being on a contract to buy a new home. Back in March I see a collections account reported by Afni on my credit reports, which I have no clue on. Never even got a letter until weeks later, stating that I owed them something and I had 30 days to dispute or it would be put on my credit reports. THEY ALREADY HAD IT ON MY CREDIT REPORT before the date listed on the letter. So I write them a certified letter requesting to validate the debt before the 30 days... no response. I still give these idiots 2 more months and send them a second letter... NOTHING... I again send a 3rd letter 2 more months later and of course NOTHING. I disputed this account to the credit bureaus and it came back as verified. I am now getting ready to send a letter to the credit bureaus to request which methods they used to verify this bogus account and I am sending them proof of all the letters I have sent to AFNI. This is outrageous that these people can get away with this. I am about to loose my house because this is not getting resolved. But rest assured that if that happens I am filling a charges.
