resolved to the customer's satisfaction
I was a first time computer buyer and needed an internet service for my new computer. Unfortunately I had no idea about internet service and, living in rural Missouri, only had a few choices. Unfortunately I picked Century Link because they offered the lowest rate. After getting everything hooked up and operating, I subscribed to Netflix which is the most awesome service available on the internet. I tried to stream Netflix to my house but was constantly interrupted and the streaming would stop, then start again in a few minutes or a lot of minutes. I contacted Netflix and they determined the speed of my so-called Century Link High Speed DSL Internet to be about .48 mpps. Netflix advised that they needed to run at 1.5 mpps which is not too much to ask for. After contacting Century Link several times (Their administrative section is typical and imposssible to reach and deal with) they told me there was nothing they could do as my internet would only run at .5 mpps. This is slow-speed internet and it totally unacceptable. Please do yourself a favor and stay away from Century Link at all costs.

I pay $60/month for 3Mbps download speeds. At times it can come somewhat close to that (say 2.2 Mbps), but then it will swing down for hours if not days on end to around 50-70 Kbps. You read that right; this is dial-up modem speeds from 25-30 YEARS ago. I live in King frickin' County Washington, the most populous County in the state of Washington and I've been trying to contact the Washington State Broadband Office about this. There are neighbors right around me with 40-50Mbps speeds, but they tell me those are all used up, so this is what you get. Inexplicable that I can't seem to get an accurate engineering report, which will truly evaluate what in the world is going on.
I'm paying for a service that is wholly suboptimal at best.
Thanks for your suggestion. recently I was thinking to get internet package from
centurylink
now I will research more about other internet service providers.

My centurylink is horrible. I can't even watch a show on netflix without it stopping and saying to try again later. When I'm on a secure website I get knocked out 3 or 4 times an hour and have to log in again and again. I guess I'll start looking for a new provider.

Hell i live in fayette, alabama i called and told centurylink to shut me the hell off, they did not shut it off but instead let it run up a 600 dollar bill then shut it off and it has been in collections as i refuse to pay. Hell that is what att and directv does, but anywho i'd call in about slow internet they sent someone out it sped up and a week later back to a crawl and going in and out. i don't mind paying if the [censored] works as advertised but running a 600 dollr bill up on me after i told them to shut the [censored] off.

Have been using CL for years, as we are in a rural area and not any competition besides going with a dish company. The internet speed is slow much of the time; only occasionally do we have fairly well speeds, but it has never been up to par. People all around complain to no avail. Most of the time it is recorded answer: we don't see any issues with your service. !! I am presently checking into a company out of the bootheel of Missouri, that has service just a few miles east of here in another rural area. The customers are very satisfied. Right now I am paying for a land phone, internet, directtv and a dinky service fee that you can only use about once a year! I have no complaint with the service reps who have made many trips to check things out or exchange devices. I just don't believe this company knows what they are doing, or else they don't care. Today my speedtest was as follows: Ping 90 Ms ; Download Speed 0.41 Mbps; Upload Speed 0.21 Mbps!! I am paying for a higher speed than this poor excuse! Also I am having time outs with iPhone and my TV when using the smart apps and programs, such as Netflix. It is time for a change.

CenturyLink is engaged in consumer fraud. The company is not providing the DSL speeds to customers for which they pay. While the speed test on CenturyLink's own web site indicates a customer is getting the contracted DSL speeds, any other test elsewhere on the Internet shows that they are NOT. This means that CenturyLink is paying for lower-quality connections to the Internet backbone than what are necessary to actually supply the DSL speeds to customers for which they pay; yes, the speeds to CenturyLink itself (i.e., directly between the customer's DSL modem and CenturyLink's local facility) are in accord with the contracts, as soon as a customer tries to go beyond those CenturyLink facilities (as all actual Internet traffic does), the speeds drop dramatically (e.g., compare the speeds you get at "https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest" with those CenturyLink's own corresponding speed test, and you will see that the former are dramatically lower than what you are paying for). This is evidence of consumer fraud, and worthy of a class action lawsuit against CenturyLink.

centurylink makes a big deal with there so called high speed internet and heck they cant even provide a 1.5 mb line it just a .05 kbs most of the time email unable to send or receive leaving me in the dark ages of time look its 2017 and i still run a less then dial up here in mills county iowa and they dont even replace the old phone lines that have no insulation on the wires and short out and not even protected from elements, support hangs up and calls ya name and tells you to do perverted stuff as well. I find this company is the worst company and even make me even pay for a line chage that i dont see they have done anything in my area for almost 6 months no power to new d slab and no wires in the pvc piping to a new d slam i believe a sting that has cuts in it with out cups will not work used that in school 40 yrs back an it still bad signal in any distance. 60.00 dollars for dail up net is just to much for a disable american vet to pay for something that to work but the centurylink company is 30 yrs behind the times and there tech are at the same speed and over sales the d slam and there servers so it crashes and kicks you to a craw . thanks centurylink for putting me in the dark ages. man with 2 rocks beating them to make noise works better then centurylink.
My internet goes in and out for months now, this service sucks. Century Link hasn't replaced their lines in 15 years and I am paying for a service that is trash,

I have centurylink and pay for 10 Mb but lately the speed will drop to nothing then go up to 8 Mb then drop again. I do the power off thing and it will be ok for awhile. I believe it is because centurylink doesn't want to upgrade their lines. Their making a fortune off their old lines so why upgrade. If they put in fiber optic lines they would have to upgrade their systems to handle more traffic.
I am subscribing to 7Mb/s and never reach that speed. Lately I get much slower speed, less then 1.5Mb/s. Today, Monday 02/08 i checked my speed across the US. I got ping 386ms, download 1.12 Mb/s and upload 0.71 Mb/s. Ping 386 ms, can you imagine!
That is a giant ripp-off. What am I paying for? They charge an arm and leg for a lousy third world internet service. I live in a rural area and Century Link has total monopoly here, well almost. There is also Exede Satellite service available, but they are even worse.
We are way behind Europe or Japan where you get 100Mb/s for same price or less.

I live in Alexandria MN and I pay Centurylink for 10M dsl. The only tIme I can get close to that speed is between the hours of 12am and 3pm on week days during the school year. By the time I get home from work the speed is down to .7 to 2M max to every sever I test to, that is every sever except Centurylink's server. During the weekend I do not have a chance at streaming video. I know my circuit and modem are OK because I can always hit over 9M to the Centurylink server. They have a real problem in their network and continue to stick their heads in the sand. I have had a tech out to check everything out and the issue is not with my network or dsl circuit.
I have century link as well in NC and 20% of the day it may work at 4 or so mbps but most of the time it's an alarmingly slow 0.3 to 0.9 mbps download speed according to speed test. And that's WiFi and with wire directly connected. I think they are a scam of a company trying to gain a bunch of profit from giving their customers half a$$ or quarter a$$ internet. When I call and talk to service it will work fine then later go back down. I'm a nice guy but I pay for x amount of service I expect that or at least something I can pull a Web page up with in a timely manner. Maybe we shold change 1 quart of the ceo`s oil in his car and charge him for a job well done see how they like that!!
Stuck with 1.5 mb here as well that rarely ever gets to .5, have called several times and always get the same run around, how it must be the modem or my pc, til i tell them i'm a network admin then they change their tune and admit that the area and nodes are all overloaded. Centurylink is the worst company out their and should be reported to the FCC as they know they have put over 5 times the amount of people on their bandwidth than it can handle and continue to add more daily without upgrading crap

I am still stuck with 1.5 meg. Even though they say 10 meg is available at my address in North Carolina, All they have to do is upgrade the trunk on my road, and this would be the end of this situation. They will not update this trunk, Neighbors on the other street get it, in which has the main remote terminal on it, oh yea, this is also the terminal that feed my trunk, which my trunk is lock at 1.5.

Use Centurylink here in west Tucson, supposed to be 10/1Mbps which is the fastest they say this small subdivision we are in supports. Much of the time it feels like 56k dialup is faster! Not that satisfied as everything streams nowadays and it is all slow, not to mention the hits to online PC gaming. Sad to think parts of Europe easily surpass what we are stuck with here in the U.S. We used to be the world leader but not anymore in high speed connectivity.

I pay for 12mb and a short while back it dropped t 5-6mb and then off and on to .40-2.5. I called CL (in March), they said it wa the modem and sent a reburbished to me. Last week (October) I had the same thing starting to happen, and CL determined my modem wasn't working right. So they sent me a new one...same thing happened. They sent out tech support who spent off and on for three days working on my problem. He gave me a different modem to replace the one the office had sent, rewired the outside connection, and changed the inside plug. I now get over 10mb which is about where I should be. But it took a good tech man to get it right.

Well, I am trying to go to Time Warner, and the only problem with that is I would have to pay for the hook up, due to it is not down the road where I live. They would put in the service, and I can go up to 300 meg, for 89.99 a month. In the long run that would be great, less than what I am paying for at Century Link. The initial installation is what I would have to pay for which is over a 1/2 mile for the hook up. Trying like hell to leave Century link, but at this time the only thing on the road.
I totally agree, century link is a totally farce and thief, all this people and I should ( because I have this service too ) place some LAW SUIT, this can not continue like it is right now. Century link is committing a FRAUDULENT CRIME!

SW Louisiana is under attack of the CenturyStinks DSL Spotty Service. Slow speeds, dropped connections and a lack of customer service. We deserve better for the money we give them. The first thing they should do is stop wasting advertising money and dedicate the money they waste on true service upgrades and not combining smaller markets into the large cities. There's a DSL service loop from central Louisiana all the way to Houston Texas that simply kills our speeds and connectivity. I've been a faithful customer for over 20 years and that means NOTHING to them. The pencil pushers wearing suits come up with brilliant ideas that look good on paper, but do not work in the real world. There's too much pork at the top, cut salaries at the top and redistribute funds to the service men. I know 3 men who were ' Forced ' to take an early retirement from CenturyStinks while bonuses were given to the pigs at the top. It's called Greed folks, these people don't give a rattz ### about their customers and their service is a reflection of that.

CL blows! We bought a home and called to transfer service from our previous one. I was told no problem we'll have it turned on for you. The day it was to be turned on I called to see why I had no service...oh by the way we can't get you internet..DSLAM is exhausted in your area. Wth? We called 3 times before moving to verify it was available at least 1.5 mb. 3 times they said yes. Liars! To top it off they made me pay an early termination fee because I broke my contract! I didn't break it, they couldn't provide service so how is that my freaking fault. Now in stuck with crap satellite service that's expensive and slow. I hate CL.
A year ago they promised us 20 mbs if we sign a contract with them. After hookup we realized we were getting less than 5 mbs and when we called them they told us "sorry we can't get those speeds in your area". They flat out lied to us but we were stuck in our contract.

After telling CS person that repair has been here 11 times in 2 mths, she pretty much told me I was a liar. I have spent hours/days without internet service, and hours calling and working with them on the phone... result, a $.66 x 3 credit. Wow. Some comments this so called customer service rep passed on (after asking if there were notes from prev calls), was that two repair techs noted 'user problem'. Really? They've pretty much ended my at home job, where I answer incomming calls. After about the 6th explanation to employer that repair was coming out again... let alone the 11th time heading here. Thanks CenturyLink, so glad I believe in karma! Oh yes, their constant answer to 1 min screen loading, speeds of 0.648... 'ma'am, it's stated UP TO the speed'. I have their slowest because faster not offered this part of town, and was fine until prob started. I have heard every excuse mentioned above. At least get some new lines to feed us people. You would think each on of us using land line would be very valuable! Time to look for cell phone! p.s. repair x 2 this week for phone probs = repair stating 'must be the moisture (rain ha), but I don't see any problems'. Now I'm imagining things right. Yep, and maybe that big black garbage bag that has been wrapped around all those line on the pole, has nothing to do with nothing either. If can avoid CenturyLink (and the worse CS rep ever, Katie) do so!!!
We live in Glennie, Michigan and there aren't a whole lot of options out here, in fact Century Link seems to hold the monopoly in this area for only Internet Service Provider aside from Dial Up I believe. They're supposed to be DSL but their speeds are horribly slow, pay with taxes and such around $75 dollars a month, more than Charter Cable I feel inclined to point out!!! Advertise over 10M and yet we don't even get 1M at any time during the day or night. Had service guy come out, replaced phone cord, replaced router, whole 9 yards and they were even supposed to be "upgrading" it in the area to make it run faster...yea no difference, in fact it has more really slow times. Very disappointing.
Centurylink is happy with the money they make the ONLY way the company will change anything is if it will save them money or at least prevent them from losing any.
The only way to do that it to hurt them financially in whatever creative LEGAL way possible!
And hurt them good.
I have CenturyLink here in Fayetteville, NC and it is so bad. I pay 70 a month for 10 mbps Down and .3 mbps Up. We have tried to upgrade past that towards 25 mbps, but "That's not available in your area", and my "10 mbps download" is more around 5 mbps on a good day. I'm so tired of trying to get through customer service, and getting the run around. Stay as far away from CenturyLink as possible, worst ISP I have ever had
This is my 10 mbps connection: http://www.speedtest.net/result/4174342439.png
I was with another company before and I was having anxiety over the way it disconnected and connected every ten minutes and I would have to reconnect onto my Wi-Fi, so we changed to Centurylink, which is ten times worse. It is the slowest. Even worse then the antique AOL dialup. I have no desire to wait for ten minutes for a Google search to come up then another ten minutes when clicking on the link. And the costumer service representatives are of no help. They say my tablet, phone and even the router (which was supplied by them) is the problem.

Deforest, WI (outside Madison, WI)...and CL acknowledges that 3.8mbps is what you get. I'm a 10 year customer, but will have to cancel all service. What a hassle. I can't imagine how they would expect to keep customers with 3.8. Golly!
Well, I have had Qwest/CenturyLink DSL for over 15 years and I can say I have never had a problem with speed. I started out a long time ago with .768Mbps for a speed. Which was OK at the time, then I moved up to 1.5Mbps and then 7Mbps and I now sit at 12Mbps. I am running a home network that most people wish they had. 10 machines on 2 networks 1 private and 1 public. I run 3 Servers 24/7/365 and I am not cheap here either. 1 web server, 1 mail server, and 1 SQL server and everything just fly's here. This is just my experience and I hope others have it as well.
Been paying for 10mb for who knows how long and been getting crappy service for the entire time. Today I finally called to find out what the deal is and come to find out they had us programmed to receive 1.5mb instead of the 10mb we have been paying for. The tech told me he would reprogram so we would get the 10mb we are paying for and to call customer service to see about getting a credit. Called customer service and both of the people I spoke with were rude! The first one gave me a one time credit of $20. I told her to keep her $20. I have been paying for a service I have not been receiving. She then put me through to her supervisor who had the nerve to tell me since I signed the 1 year contract with them for the 10mb I was actually paying the 1.5mb price so there was nothing she could do about that. However, she said she would provide a credit to the time I was not under contract. BULL CRAP I hung up! My husband said someone needs to fill a class action lawsuit against this company because no telling how many people they have done this to. So, I will be searching online for such and filling a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Oh, I have been a CenturyTel/CenturyLink customer since 2002.
They finally upgrade my neighborhood to 40 Mpbs, I bought a netgear modem and did a speed test on my internet. I was subscribed to 1.5 MPbs and my test comes out at ~500 kbs. Not sure how fast the new service will be, but not too happy with this right now. Trouble page says to check the speed on the modem and I did. Same speed. I hate living like this
I came to this site via a search trying to determine "why" Netflix movies are regularly interrupted during view. I am glad I did. Many of you have had the same problems. I upgraded my CenturyLink account several weeks ago to 10MB & bought a more expensive router. I live in central Louisiana and the only service available was Centurytel (now CenturyLink). I called CL and inquired about the possibility of the problem being the Westell Modem model #G90-[protected] that was installed when Centurytel installed DSL lines several years ago of it being the problem and they assured me it was not. I will attempt to run the DSL speed test here and see what I come up with..??IF CL does NOT deliver 10 mbps that they are billing for, can the Corp be held liable?? They promise a service and charge for it even though it seems they do not have the technology to deliver...There may be a reason they cannot provide the service BUT they should inform their customers..If legal class action is warranted I would add my name to the list (On Social Sec so I would not be able to put $ but if it was successful, I would give any $ recovered to St. Jude Hospital)
I too am having problems. I have a work station in my home that has to be hard wired to my router. All my other computers, iPad and etc goes through my wifi and its awfully slow. Worse than when you used to use dialup. I can wait 45 seconds or more just to load a web page. Sometimes its longer. This is so unacceptable. I've only been with Century Link for 5 months and I regret ever changing to them. I wished there was a way to get out of my year contract for the poor service and for not getting what you pay for. I am in Broomfield, CO and have been with Qwest/CenturyLink DSL for more than 5 years. I signed up for the priced for life guarantee at 1.5 MBps, Now I see my modem has the speed listed at 576 k, and since the switch to CL I have seen my rates go up. More expensive and slower is not acceptable. I ran a speed test and the results are .5 MBps download and .52 MB upload. CenturyLink, I am looking elsewhere for service unless you can do something about this.
I have been with century link dsl for five years now. I don't know why. I pay for 10mb service and have only had connection rates close to that a couple of times and that was only when the technician was here. Thats if you call 5mb close to 10. They have tried to blame it on the lines in my house but have dispoved that by connecting to the box on the outside of the house and still doing good to get .72mb. I have spent countless hours on the phone with them. Finally I got someone honest on the phone who told me that I was doing good to get .7mb, that there records showed average connection speeds in my area of .6mb. So why was I ever sold 10mb service if it was not possible in my area. I had comcast 20mb installed last week, have checked it daily and the slowest spped has been 23mb download and 12mb upload. Major difference and the price is actually less. The next thing is to drop them from my phone service

I live in rural Idaho. My choices of internet are dial-up, satellite or CenturyLink DSL. The first two are slower than dirt. The DSL worked fine until the past month. It has crawled to half of what I normally get. I ran the speed test tonight. I am supposed to get 7 mbps. Tonight I got 2.589. Not even half. My sons are computer techs and have run the machines through the hoops. It isn't the computers or the router/modem. It is the DSL. I figured it was heavier on the holidays because the kids were out of school and on their computers. But it is worse than ever. Personally, I wish it was still Quest. They were more competent and friendlier than the CenturyLink employees.
I have been paying for 10 MBPS internet service and it it just a waste of money! the internet is really slow and will not reach anything higher than 3 MEGS. I am very frustrated with this problem and i am about to switch to a different phone/internet Company!
I live in rural Virginia, north west of Richmond. I have had "DSL" for a little over 3 years, heck maybe longer. Initially, I used a Netgear DGN-2000 router, and CL was hapless when it came to helping me, and Gearhead Services were even worse. During the first 2 years they took control of my pc twice and wiped the hard drive both times, then hung up the phone. Now the problem I have is I have a new Mac, a Westell Router and can not even stream Youtube videos. This connection is awful. When I call CL, they help out, and are very courteous on the tech side, and the system will work for about a month. Then it's back to the same slow connection again. the speed test tonight gets me: 352k download, and 131k upload, 236 ping. Now that is better than dial up, but really, not a whole lot. My fear is that every time I call, I get told that I should not have CL DSL, as I am not in the coverage area, after 3-4 years with the service, they want to tell me that I am not eligible for service? What the heck? Then to make matters worse, I will get the occasional Tech that tells me my area is slated for upgrade to higher speed, yet I never see anything.
Add to that the recent debacle my Mother-in-Law just went through. She was told she was eligible for CL DSL. So she opted for a package deal and went with the DTV package and scheduled the installation for after the internet was connected. The routers arrived, and a Tech called to assist with the installation. He had an email stating that everything was good for install. So she scheduled DTV to be installed and cancelled her Dish Network Satellite Internet for the same day. Only to be called the day before, late in the afternoon, and told that she would not be getting CL DSL. She had already disassembled her system in preparation for the new equipment, and now was not going to get it. CL came to a community meeting 2 years ago and promised to bring internet service out to us, yet it has not happened.

CL is slow and does not care, they are making a profit with the current system, so why should they fix it, that would cut into profits. Thats the america we live in now, Profits 1st. the bottom line
