I hereby submit a formal complaint against Capitec Bank regarding an unresolved case of fraud and incorrect personal information on my bank account.
In December 2025, an unauthorized online transaction of R1,062.03 was processed on my Capitec account. I did not make this purchase, nor did I authorize any person to use my account for online shopping.
Upon visiting a Capitec branch to report the fraud, it was discovered that the cellphone number registered on my account does not belong to me and is completely unknown to me. I never requested or consented to any change of my contact details.
I was further informed that Capitec’s system reflects that my fingerprint was used to change the cellphone number on my profile. I strongly deny making this change. This raises serious concerns about the integrity of Capitec’s identity verification and security processes.
Despite reporting this matter at the branch, I was advised that there was nothing further they could do to assist me. To date, the fraudulent transaction remains unresolved, and I have not received a satisfactory explanation regarding:
• Whose cellphone number is linked to my account
• Who added this number
• How my fingerprint was allegedly used without my knowledge
I believe Capitec Bank failed to adequately protect my personal and banking information and failed to properly investigate this matter.
I respectfully request the Ombudsman’s assistance to:
• Investigate the unauthorized transaction
• Determine how an unknown cellphone number was added to my account
• Review Capitec’s fingerprint verification process
• Assist in resolving the financial loss incurred
I attach all supporting documents available and am willing to provide any additional information required.
