Bob Evans review: Published coupon near expiration then would not honor

I received a Bob Evan's coupon in the mail (aptly called "Junk" mail in this case). When I clipped the coupon, I didn't notice that its expiration was Friday of the SAME week! So, when I visited the restaurant the following Tuesday, I was upset when the hostess informed me that it had already expired and she didn't offer to honor the coupon. From a past visit, I knew that I had to present the coupon at checkout... but if I was able to present it BEFORE I ordered the meals, maybe the issue would have been caught earlier and I could have adjusted my order accordingly. The frustrating thing was that I received an identical coupon later the same day and this one expired a month later. So I don't know if the one I received was a fault of Bob Evans or their printers. Either way, I feel they should have honored this coupon regardless. Question: why do companies (especially restaurants) publish an endless stream of coupons with expiration dates? The coupon I used was 50% off 2nd meal (of lesser or equal value), so I see no reason for an expiration date. FYI: I recently visited Bed, Bath and Beyond store and was able to use 4 coupons, 3 of which had expired months earlier... theirs is certainly GOOD BUSINESS practice... which is sadly lacking from Bob Evans. Finally, the food and service was OK, except I ordered an orange juice and was automatically given a LARGE size (the server should have asked me if I wanted a regular or large size).
