Upon checking in for a Delta flight in September 2026, the Delta representative apparently saw in their system that I had an American Express Delta Skymiles Gold credit card. She strongly encouraged me to upgrade to a Platinum card. The annual fee would be $350 (significantly higher than my gold card), stating clearly that the benefits included a $300 statement credit and 90,000 miles added to my Delta Skymiles account as long as I charged $4,000 within the first 6 months.
Upon receiving the new Platinum card, the letter advised that American Express had moved $3000 of credit from my Gold card to the new Platinum card, without any type of advance notice or concurrence from me. When I called to inquire about this, I was told that the miles I would receive after spending $4,000 within 6 months would be 40K, not the 90K promised by the Delta representative. Nowhere in the paperwork accompanying the credit card was this even mentioned!
I opened a case with American Express asking why I did not receive the 90K miles, since my credit score is 360 and I have never been late on a single payment. I was told it would take between 7 and 30 days for resolution, but if I didn't hear from them, I could call for an update after 7 days. I called once 10 days had passed and was told my case had been resolved and I would still only receive 40K miles. I asked why they hadn't advised me the case had been reviewed and closed; I was told they don't contact their customers with their decisions. They only advise the results when/if the customer calls back and asks. What?!
I have had an Amex Delta Gold card for 12 years. Since I felt this was misleading advertising and inexcusably poor customer service, I requested that the card be cancelled, and the $3,000 credit returned to my original Gold card. I was told they could only return $500 to my existing Gold card. What?!
I escalated to a supervisor who advised there was nothing she could do. When confirming that I did want to cancel the card and have $500 of the $3,000 credit returned to my card, she said that doing so might alter the remaining credit on the old card. What?!
Bottom Line
The Promise - As a 12-year Gold cardholder who never missed a payment, I (unsolicited) was strongly encouraged to upgrade to a Platinum Card for a $350 fee. That card would come with a $300 statement credit and 90K Delta skymiles as long as I charged $4,000 to the card within 6 months.
What I Actually Received - 40,000 miles and a reduction in my current Gold card credit limit "to provide credit for the new Platinum card," although my credit score is 860, I've never been late on a payment and always pay my credit cards in full as soon as they are billed. Neither the reduced mileage credit or the transfer of available credit from my existing Gold card to the new Platinum card were ever revealed when I applied. In fact, I only learned that the mileage award would be less than half what was promised when I called Am Ex to ask about the credit transfer.
The Result - I did not activate the card. Upon advising that I wanted to cancel it, I was told that only $500 of the $3,000 credit taken from my existing card would be returned to it.
Totally Unacceptable!
I am now investigating the many other credit cards with great benefits - and no fees - to replace my current American Express Gold Card due to the seriously misleading business practices of the American Express/Delta Skymiles program.
Desired outcome: To be provided a $300 statement credit and 90K skymiles if I charge $4,000 to the card within 6 months, in accordance with the Delta representative's sales pitch.
