Elmhurst Hospital is the worst I have seen in profession care. She had a Palliative Care taking care of her while waiting for a bed with Hospice. During the night she was doing poorly according to the staff and did not bother to call us until she expired the next morning. After calling to let us know she was no longer with us at 6:14 am , we raced from LI to be there to view her. We arrived at 9:15 after explaining to Dr and Staff it will be alittle bit for us to arrive during high traffic hr in the morning. We got there and her body was sent to the morgue. Nurse told us they could only hold her for 2hrs on the floor that I would have to view her in the morgue. Disgusted I stormed out, found the patient advocate, and MSW and explained this was appalling to family. I also stated I too was a nurse that wore many hats and would never do this to family policy or not.. We viewed her remains in the depths of the bowels of the hospital undignified in a body bag with her mouth wide open and plastic flowers on her chest. Like this was going to make me feel better. Where's the compassion, and the comforting from the nursing staff and physicians. This was not right! You wouldn't treat a dying pet as my sister was .. I am disgusted with Pallaitive Dr who didnot call me in the middle of the night to tell me she was doing poorly or the nursing staff for that matter. I did file a formal complaint with the state, hospital and the advocate for patient care. Disgusting behavior. I would not recommend this hospital for love or money to anyone in this community. I wouldn't let them treat my dog either. I hope the staff is educated on how to handle dying patients and families.. I guess they don't care much for either. Just a paycheck.
Recommendation: educate your staff on their behavior, policy or not there are exceptions to the rule..
