Tesco review: Customer service at Redhill Tesco

I am writing to make a formal complaint about the way my daughter and I have been treated at the Redhill Tesco store.

My daughter is 30 years old, Black, and has a disability. On two separate occasions, while I have been purchasing a bottle of wine, a particular female member of staff has asked my daughter to produce ID, even though she was not buying any alcohol or making the purchase herself.

The member of staff concerned is a middle-aged South Asian lady. Unfortunately, I do not know her name, but I hope this description will help you identify her.

I fully appreciate that Tesco operates a Challenge 25 policy and that staff have a responsibility to request ID where appropriate. However, my concern is not simply that ID was requested, but the way this member of staff repeatedly treats my daughter. She is consistently rude, offers no explanation for why she is asking for ID, and leaves us feeling singled out and embarrassed.

This is now the second time this has happened when we have shopped together, and my daughter has also experienced unpleasant interactions with this same member of staff on other occasions. As a result, I am concerned that she may be being treated differently because of her race and disability. Whether or not that is the intention, the repeated nature of these interactions has left us feeling that she is being unfairly targeted.

I would be grateful if Tesco could investigate this matter. I also ask that the Redhill store considers providing further equality, diversity and inclusion training to staff to ensure that all customers are treated with dignity, respect and courtesy.

I would like to add that, apart from this one member of staff, all of the other colleagues at the Redhill Tesco store are friendly, helpful and professional. My complaint relates solely to this individual's conduct.
