If you pay these scoudrels by mail, send them certified, return receipt. That's the only way to prove they are liars. They love to mess your credit report up. These are ruthless individuals and you are not dealing with people who want to help you. If you can, get someone else to refinance it.
Challenge them in your credit reports. Make them do research and prove you are behind. They are good at claiming the previous creditor shows that you didn't pay them and want you to prove otherwise. If they show you late, the payments you make will go towards the interest they calim you are out, daily. So you get further behind although you think you are making your payments as you normally would.
Send complaints to the FTC and your state Attorney General.
If you are under water due to loss of job or illness, look into filing Chapter 13.
