There are two girls who work at the Dollar General Store on Highway 76 in Clinton, South Carolina, who are rude, unprofessional, and ignorant. They stand behind the counter and make nasty jokes and comments about customers. I've spoken to four other people who have also witnessed this behavior. I asked one of the female clerks if they had motor oil, and she told me that if I don't see it, they don't have it. What arrogance! Who is training these lazy, foolish people? What ever happened to good customer service? My supervisor bought some donuts at the same Dollar General Store I'm referring to. She says that the donuts were extremely stale. Evidently, those clerks are too lazy to pull outdated items from the shelves. My supervisor didn't return the donuts in order to get her money back because, as usual, the clerks didn't give her a receipt. I hadn't thought about it before, but the few times I've shopped there, I have not been given a receipt. They do this in order to cover their butts, and you won't have proof of your purchase. I will always ask for a receipt everywhere I shop from now on, and I hope every other shopper will do the same. I will not ever shop at Dollar General again!

No one should have to ask for a receipt. If a store is ethical they will automatically give you one. They only avoid giving receipts when they know they're doing something wrong. And the receipt problem isn't as awful as the ignorant attitude, and unprofessional behavior. The people who sent comments to support the stupidity exercised by this dollar general, probably work for dollar general, and behave in the same manner.

I purchased some Clover Valley cream cheese from DG because it costs so much everywhere else. My complaint is that I took a bite of the cream cheese and there was something "Plastic"/ "Chewy" in it. I have pictures of this. A small round piece of something that cannot be eaten. I am glad that my kids and family didn't get any of this.

This is concerning the store on Alabama Hwy in Rome, Ga. I am just tired of your employees smoking outside near the entrance of the store. They should not even be allowed to smoke on premises due to dangers of second hand smoke. Why do you allow this? I have to hold my breath from the car to the door when they are outside smoking. No employee should be allowed to smoke during business hours ever. When they are outside and it is usually 2 or 3 at a time who is tending the store? I have been in there and couldn't find a clerk to ask a question. Please restrict the smoking on the premises. I have had no problem at any of the other stores in Rome with smoking near the door only this store on Alabama Hwy.

My comment is "Who pays you your paycheck?" Duh! The customer pays you your payday. Honey, you run off your customers and you have NO PAY. Are you so ignorant that YOU can't see this. You will think about this when you lose your job. Ignorance is inexcusable when you don't try to correct it. I hope they do close the store down and you lose your job. You don't deserve any pay.

Dollar General # 11251, in Brantley, AL. The store manager is the worst. She has no concept of customer service, and I know for a fact that the majority of her employees are not happy working with this woman. She is snappy and acts like it's the end of the world that she is working there. Hello, people we are in a recession, I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be more than happy to have her job. She should be nicer. Also, since she has taken over this store, it has become nasty, and things are always out of place and in the aisles, so you have a hard time navigating the aisles. Please, DOLLAR GENERAL, address this situation

I am writing in regards to an incident that occurred today, on October 16, 2010 between 8:00am and 9:30am. Until today, I have never been to a Dollar General Store but I went to the Dollar General (Located on 501 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA) to take advantage of a $10 gift card for its grand opening, to use a $5 mail-in coupon after buying $20 worth of items, and to use three $1.00 off DG coupons for buying selected items.

After shopping around, I selected items that total about $26 (without including the tax). When I came to the register, the cashier (the store manager) rang up the items to $26.38. I then gave her the coupons. She proceed to scan the 3 $1.00 off DG coupons and place the coupons along with the $5 dollar mail-in coupons in the register. The total of the price came to $21.38. I then gave her the $10 gift card. The overall price came to $11.38. I thought something was odd so I asked the cashier if the $5 mail-in coupon and the three coupons were used. She quickly responded yes and said “waiting for the customer” in a hasty manner to get me to pay for my order. So, I paid and tried to look at the receipt in her presence but then she told that she scanned all the coupons and that I would see it on the receipt.

After stepping out the store, I went over the receipt and did my own calculations and realized that not all the coupons were used. Initially, I thought that the $5 coupon was not used so I went back into the store and told the cashier that I thought the $5 coupon was not used and that the total price should be around $8. She yelled at me, claiming that all the coupons were used and made sarcastic remarks about “not doing my math right” and “not thinking right” but went over the receipt with me.

She told me that the whole price came to $21.38 after using the coupons (the 3 $1.00 off) and that she then took $5 and the $10 off to get $11.38. Going off her logic, I said that $21 minus $10 would get me $11 and that if the $5 was used, the total price should be about $6. She then got nasty me and continued to say that all the coupons were used and they would show on the receipt. She then pointed to where it says $5 savings; however, I still pointed out that the price is not reflecting that if the price was about $21 before removing the $10 and the $5. I then asked for the store manager and then she told me that she was the store manager and remarked that I should just go to another store.

I continue to insist that the price was wrong if all the coupons were used. To show me that the price of $11.38 will appear, she voided my items, took out the $10 gift card that I used and the 3 $1.00 off from the register, and then proceeded to scan my items like before. I realized then that the whole price was initially $26.38 and that the $5 was subtracted to get $21.38. She then used the $10 gift card to get $11.38. It was then that I realized that it was the three $1.00 off coupons that were not used and I pointed this out to her. She then claimed that she told me three times that the coupons could not be used with the $10 gift cards, yet she initially took the coupons from me, put them in the register, claimed that they did scanned, and allowed me to walk out of the store without them.

I asked her why since the coupons were directly from the Dollar General Store website and that nowhere on the $10 gift card and the $5.00 off coupon does it say that other coupons cannot be used. She replied “I don’t know” and that “maybe the system just won’t allow them.”

At that point, considering that she was the store manager and that I did not have time to go to another store, I decided to void some of the items that I planned to have the coupons pay for to get a total price of $5.88. She then helped pack my stuff and gave me back my coupons and I left the store.

She was right that the $5 was taken off; however, what concerns me was that she illegally took the three $1.00 coupons from me and would not have given them back have I have not pointed out the discrepancy in the price. She tried to twist it as if she knew that the three coupons were not included and that she told me but only gave them back when I came back to store right away to question the price. On other hand, if she knew that the coupons did not scan but originally took the coupons, then she knowingly robbed from me.

Today may have been their grand opening and they may have been under a lot of stress; however, that does not excuse the store manager for being rude to not only me but to other customers who asked for help. Today will probrably be my first and last time going to the Dollar General Store.

I was an employee at Dollar General in SB, NE. And as a part of Dollar General Policy cashiers are actually required to give a customer thier receipt and they can actually get in trouble for repeatedly not giving receipts. If a customer leaves the receipt on the counter and walks out the door the cashier is allowed to throw it away. But when a customer asks if the store has something in stock they are to go and check the location of the item with the customer. What the cashier did was unprofessional and rude and should have been given a written write up. The store that sold stale food should have a manager checking for outdated food once a week just before they get thier truck delivery and remove out dated items from the shelf. The store I worked at did a check like that every two wks. I do agree about the managers needing to be more professional and not rude and downgrading. But what customers dont understand is that sometimes not only are the customers treated like that but the employees are too. I was treated very poorly when I was trying to make a decision about staying with Dollar General or not and was told I quit and was to leave the store immediately instead of even allowing me to put in my two weeks. The store manager wouldnt even let me get phone numbers to my district or regional managers or to corporate so I could file a complaint about the situation and how I was treated.

A) It's Dollar General. It's not Saks Fifth Avenue. You get what you pay for, and paying $1 for stuff doesn't = amazing customer service. Just deal with it.

B) Your supervisor is an idiot for not checking dates on food he/she buys before buying it. I check dates on everything I buy so I don't get sick or cheated out of money for rotten food.

C) I thought it was adult knowledge to always get a receipt. Why is this such a new development for you?
