filthy store, rude employees!
Ross Dress For Less is the filthiest stores I have ever been in. I have tried 3 of these stores to only find that it seems things are very out of control. Their employees haven't got a clue as to the price of just about anything. And the employee's attitudes leave a frown on your face as you leave and if I could have made my way back into these filthy stores, I would have returned everything I've ever bought there. Something needs to be done. Rudeness is unprofessional and to say the least, these stores are making money off of people and can't even give a thanks in return. Fire all the employees, clean up the stores and then maybe the next people they hire just might give a damn. Ross should be paying us for putting up with their crap instead of making money off the little people.
how to get heard at ross
The first thing is to calm down. The more you rant, the less inclined the employee will be to help you. The more you rant, the more they want to just shut you up and get you to move on.
Ask for the district manager. There are other managers in the store, but they're mostly troubleshooters. If he/she is not there, write them a note stating your concern BRIEFLY and asking them to call you by a certain time. Tell the DM specifically what action you want taken: "I want a full refund," or "I want you to speak with the associate about the proper way to handle this situation, and I want you to let me know when you've talked to him/her."
I like Ross, but they under staff purposely, in order to save money on payroll. So we are in a constant state of rushing and don't have enough time to keep the store tidy or clean. I have been admonished for trying to clean the (nasty) keyboard on my register. I was told, "We don't have enough time to clean." I want thing to change, too, so get your voice heard at Ross corporate!
Location of problem occured at San Jose, California located on Curtner Willow Glen area.
On sunday I went to Ross with two dresses and receipts inside the Ross plastic bag for return. As I entered, there was a super long line. So I decided that I don't wan to stand in line once for the return and then another time if I decided to buy something. I saw some dresses that I would like to try on. I went to the dressing room and the rude fat woman (between 20's to early 30's) told me I cannot bring my bag into the dressing room. I told her she need to make sure no one touches my stuff and she said okay. But I can tell that look on her face that she didn't like what I just said to her.
As I came out, she was no where to be found and there was only one bag there, so I assumed it is mine cuz there is no other bag outside of the dress room. I ended up not buying anyting and decided to return my two dresses during the weekdays since it is always quiet and no line. I am a stay home mom. Today, I decided to go and return my dresses and I opened up the bag which was tied in a knot. I was shocked to find out that the items inside the bag wasn't mind. There was a pair of children jeans size 14 with brand name tag but no Ross tag and a super huge polyster cheap pair of short with a ross mark down tage of $5. My gutt feeling is someone must heard what I told the dress room lady that it is two really nice dresses and she must look after it cuz I don't want anyone stealing them.
My worst fear happened on sunday. Someone stole my bag and walked out of the store since there is no sensor on them. Or my other hutch is the store dress room employee got pissed off at me and switched the items to get back at me.
I called to the store today and no one seem to care enough to help me. They told me that the store manager isn't there. I guess I have to take that big lost and return the polyester shorts for $5 store credit since it is not my item and I don't have the receipt to it.
This happen like around 2 p.m. at Ross. If you are corporate, you should make your employees are accountable for things like this cuz if it happen too many times, you will lose your good customers and attract only the bad customers. Deep in my heart is that I stil think that the Ross Employee switched my stuff to get even with me. I spend hundreds of dollars at Ross already. You wouldn't want all your customers to go to Marshall and TJMAXX. They carry identical products for similar prices. I am just a loyal customer and only putting up this complaint so higher mangement know about these kinds of issues at Ross.
If some Target can help friendly and polite employees, you can too do that!
Are you actually an employee at ross?
inaptly run their stores
I just came back from the Ross Dress for Less store on La Brea and Sunset. I left after realizing that there was one cashier open and the line was down the aisle. I asked them if they were going to open another register and he looked at me as if I had two heads. How and why does a store stay in business with such little help. I left the pack of clothes I...

I was employed @ the ross on commercial and dixie, off oakland park blvd. My manager went on vacation mrs. J. Martinez. The day before spring break I found out it was spring break so I asked my assistant manager what to do?"She said well do what you have to do" I told her I have always been home with my children so this was never a problem for me.I wrote a letter stating that due to lack of knowledge and having no child care that I will not be able to attend work for the week of spring break and that I apologize for the inconvenience. My assistant manager approved it and I took the week off. When the manager returned from spring break she fired me before spring break was over so I called Mr.Volger from corporate office. He was supposed to Talk to J.Martinez because the assistant manager told the manager that she approved the week of spring break but j. martinez fired me even after hearing the truth. I wanted justice for her unprofessional actions. Mr.Volger never called back!I saw a ex-coworked who informed me of a number to call the complaint on no-good managers, so I called a young lady named Beth, she too has never called me back! So I decided until I can get a new job I would file for unemployment,so I did. Today I get a letter in the mail stating that I did not have proper authorization for an absence(this is a lie!) so they denied me. I want to fight this how can I get help for this situation FAST, because J.Martinez is lieing and J.Williams told her the truth in my presents and now she has LIED to government. This has got to be illegal and I need a professional to help me on this discredit of an honest persons characteristics and honor that is undeserved based on some womens spiteful, disrespectful and unprofessional character!I need HELP ME HOWARD!

I am a Ross employee at anew store that has only been open for a year and a half.I recently got a yearly review for a first time raise since time of hire which has been from the beginning. To my surprise due to the minimum wage increase i only got 3 cents higher than a new hire because Ross chose to give raises before the increase.I am a dedicated employee who never calls in and is always willing to stay over when needed.I feel as if my dedication has gone unnoticed.
Find someone at you local unemployment that you can talk to. My friend was fired from Wal-Mart a year ago and was initially denied unemployment. But she re-applied and talked to someone there and the second time around she got her due.
Im sorry to hear all of this but never work @ Walmart either that place is alot of ###.
Im part of that wage lawsuit they have against Walmart. You should look @ suing Ross and file and agreevince against Ross. Go to your local labor industrial. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE HAPPY NEW YEARS!
Re: firing. Did you make a copy of the letter ? Did you get the approval in writing? If so, then those are your proofs to unemployment, otherwise its your word against their word. And no, its not right.

I'm currently employed at a Ross store and yes, they really need to stop being so dishonest. One of my managers had made a racism comment towards me, which I will be reporting to HR, however from reading your complaint I have no hope that it will even go through to them.
I agree with Nicole that they need to hire people who know how to speak the English language, instead of hiring people who only know how to speak Spanish; it's very difficult and I can't even communicate with the co-workers because like 70% of them know only Spanish...
The store needs better employees the hire allot of customer service workers that speak very little or no English I was an employee there and I was one of the very few who can speak English It really ticked me off one day and quit because they kept having meetings in Spanish and I did not know what they were talking about and they had there nerve to ask me to at least pay attention I told them I didn't understand and they should speak in English.
worst place, rudest people!
I went to the Ross store on 75th Avenue and Bell in Arizona today and I found a white skirt and there was no price on it. I went up to the line and there were 20 people standing and the lines were not moving and asked someone if they knew where I could go to find out the price of the skirt. She told me that I would have to wait my turn in line and then I...

It is so painful that I have to write this, for I love the products at Ross, but the shopping experience is all but pleasant. No matter what time of day you enter some of their stores, especially those in Florida (I have shopped Ross from Ocala to Pembroke Pines and Miramar) you will find floors littered with merchandise, broken items on the floor, empty drink bottles on shelves left behind by angry shoppers. I think their patrons tend to treat the store with the same respect they feel management has for them.
The staff is neither well-trained nor friendly.
I hope that Ross will listen to their customers and realize that another chain may come along with much cleaner facilities and friendlier staff, and before they realize it, they will have lost their business.

My complaint is I purchase a hydroblast gum cleaner for $13.99 and returned it within a week. The product never turn on, the clerk said the price had change to $9.99. I explained to her that it never worked, it wasn't my fault, I bought it like that. She was rude and told me it policy. So by no fault of mine, I was cheated our of $4.00 + tax.
I think that practice is very wrong and is a way of beating customers out of their hard earned money
I used to love shopping at Ross Dress For Less. Not any more. Every time I go there, no matter where or what state, the floors are littered with merchandise, broken hangers, items on the floor everywhere, dirty and wrinkled merchandise.
The stuff is never helpful and friendly. There is always just one cashier and a line of waiting angry customers. I don't understand how this chain of clothing stores stays in business. I left the store empty handed last weekend because I just didn't have the time to wait in a line that stretched almost to the back of the store.
When we realized that the store is not opening other registers for us, I and other shoppers left the merchandise we wanted to buy and left.
I really hope they will make the necessary changes.
Let me explain something to you. I'm currently a manager at Ross. I understand your point of you as a customer and I apologize but let me explain why this happens. Because we are a discount store we get discount people. I'm not saying that's you or that every customer we have is trashy because that's simply not the case but the large portion of our clientele is trash. They come in and pick up random stuff and then decide to throw it on the floor. Where I live and work in particular is surrounded by a lot of drug addicts who could care less. They take clothes off the hangers throw the hanger on the floor and the clothing on top of the racks. This would be manageable if we had enough staff on our salesfloor to clean up after them, just as our lines would be manageable if we had the staff. Here's where we have issues. The way Ross's payroll is set up is for every $1000 in sales we get $20 in payroll. So for $1000 in sales we can afford to pay 1 associate and 1 member of management for 1 hr. Mon-Fri we get trucks. The night before the truck we get an email saying how many hours is needed to complete the truck. So if we get a truck that is requiring 64 hours to complete that means you need 8 associates for 8 hours processing that truck uninterrupted. Trucks do not get a separate payroll. The associates scheduled for those truck get paid out of the same $1000 in sales as the cashier and fitting room attendants do. We are also required by our corporation to have the truck completed everyday. If not all members of management will get written up. So all of our staff get put into the stockroom and we don't pull them out for any reason. Now these same people from corporate are also telling us that we must put customers first. So as a member of management I'm constantly being pulled as a back up cashier and then running back to the stock room to clean it up. There is no one on the salesfloor. Our fitting room attendants are not allowed to leave the fitting via policy so no they can't help you find something and they can't help on register. These same people from corporate also demand that our store be organised and recovered. So whoever the closing manager is is then held responsible for the disaster on the floor. My particular store closes at 10:30. There are times we do not get out of the store until 2am because of how messy it is. Then that late night comes out of our payroll for the next day. No matter what we do we are in between a rock and a hard place. So it's either let the store be a mess and not take of the customers but the truck is completed therefore no write ups! Or take care of the store and the customers but let the trucks get backed up and get written up until you eventually get terminated. Oh and are part time staff are not allowed to exceed 25 hours a week which makes it even harder when you have giant trucks 5 days a week and not enough staff to take care of it due to hourly restrictions. Yes we could hire more people but how would we pay these new people who need to be trained (we have no special training hours alotted either it's all the same payroll) without cutting hours from employees who already know how to do their jobs? So yes I understand your frustration as a customer but please understand we are just as frustrated as you and we are doing the very best we can with what corporate demands of us.
we barely have enough payroll for a skeleton crew :(
I am with both sides here. No it's not Ross's fault that the customers throws things they decide they don't want on the floor. But it's also is not the customer's fault that Ross can't schedule worth crap. They need to learn to schedule another cashier in the morning along with the opening cashier, or have a cashier come in an hour later, then maybe one come around lunch time, instead of using people from the stockroom so they can't get their work done or people who do markdowns so they too can't get their work done and customers pick up what they are going to markdown and buy them full price because the stupid registers aren't programmed to take the markdown prices like most NORMAL stores. Come on Ross, get with the times and stop blaming your employees for lack of service to the customers all the time. Fix the registers and start scheduling more cashiers!
Do you think its Ross fault customers REFUSE to be neat, REFUSE to put stuff back when they changed their mind while they still shopping so somehow you guys figure its okay to drop the merchandise where ever. They feel like the employees are maids or the shop is magic and anything on the floor will magically put its self back where its found and because many people like Ross prices 2x that amount comes to the store between 400 to 700 0r more that walk in the store and 5 to 6 employees that are working 3 on cashier, 2 in stock and 1 in fitting room whose gonna have time to clean after you guys all day. Oh and there is NO night shift crew that comes in and clean after you guys; the workers you see from about 5pm or later are the night crew that cleans after you customers that have the nerve to come in rude and with all kinds of attitude. FYI you guys do not pay our paycheck as so you like to think. What you pay for is the merchandise that you bought and take home with you. If you really want to be accounted for paying anyone paycheck just hand money without buying anything.
"get your gay white [censor] out of here". This is wrong is so many ways. That fellow and his wife were abused and mistreated.
I can deal with the dirty and unkeep stores. I can not deal with those hate filled discriminating remarks.
Down with Ross
Customers deserve to be treated with respect by the employees at Ross. If the employees treat the customers with respect the trust me everybody is happy. Why is the majority of only Ross associates rude, grumpy, non helpful, careless, negative. I mean damn if you feel like that at your job then do YOURSELF a favor and quit! Dont take your anger out on customers!
I had a HORRIBLE experience at Ross today; a lazy rude grumpy associate by the toys section decided to take her anger out on me: a customer. I noticed a small kids play tent was open and I was just looking at it, she decides to come to me literally out of nowhere righ behind my back and accuse me of opening the tent and try to steal the huge darn thing! I felt so assulted and disrespected. I know the associate really got mad that some other kids played with that and now she has to do her job by putting it away so therefor she has to take her anger out on me, just a customer who is looking at the tent. She brought another assocaite and that associate explained to her that the tent was out in the open for a while and that I was not trying to steal it. I asked for the horrible associates name, Clauta, and went straight to her manager, and explained that I felt disrespected and that Clauta is a HORRIBLE associate, she seems like she is having a bad day and she taking it out on customers. The manager didnt seem to care, and completley ignored me, the manager looked and acted like she didnt like or care about her job. Bottom line Ross has rude ### associates that need to be fired immediatley!
Ross ONLY sucks because of the people who work there (plain & simple) You associates dont have to complain about how sloppy customers are, we are not the ones getting paid, you are so do your damn job, if not, QUIT! Whoever is the CEO of Ross should hire better managers so they can take care of the rude ### associates!
unreasonable people always has the first loud word
I took my 4-yr old daughter to do some shopping at Ross (333 Ward Ave., Honolulu, HI 96814) on 10/21/06. She found a Winnie the Pooh chair/table set to be very cute. The set is approximately 3 x 3, and weights 25 pounds. Anyway, it is both bulky and heavy esp. when you have to take care of a little kid, and I am barely make 5 ft. After I struggled to slide the set on the shopping cart bottom, and went to the cashier; The cashier (associate #432577) stated that she could not scan the set because the way the set was in the cart. I asked if she could help to move it up to inside the cart so that I could pushed it to the parking lot, where my car was.
She said:" you can do it. Just bring it up!"
I said:" I can't do it, can you help?" Note: I am a person who doesn't ask for help al least I really need it. I happen to have weak wrist that I should not carry heavy items.
Unwillingly and with a long face, she finally move her body and came around to my cart, and dump the set flat on top of the cart.
I said" " I needed it inside the cart safely so that I can take it to the parking lot."
She ignored me.
I managed to move it inside the cart. Pls note that by putting the set flat on top of the cart, the set could fall down and hit anybody who might walk by. Do not forget that the top of the cart goes downward. I asked her if she could put the set inside the cart. Then she turned out to be very upset and angry.
"You can't take the cart to the parking lot! She raised her voice:" I can't scan the box now"
Well, I didn't know that. I moved the box and dumped it on the counter and returned the shopping cart to where it belonged.
When I was signing the sale slip, I dropped my credit card on the counter when she asked to see it.
She was telling me that I was throwing things around, and called Chris, manager on duty for attention. She told Chris that I was throwing things around.
I was totally caught off guarded for her to say that. I guess the unreasonable people always has the first LOUD word.
"I did not!" I replied.
"yes, you did. We have a video camera." She answered confidently.
I told the manager what happened but he didn't say a word.
I dragged the set to my car and came back to say to the manager:" I haven't started complaining about yet, but she had to complain about me first. This is another thing I am not happy about."
"I know." Chris said.
How to fix the problem? Fire her, and a $50 gift cert.
Everyone should do what you say... you have baby. Not by choice... you just have one, you chose to take shopping with you. I would suggest a more expensive retailer for the service you deserve.
I will never return to this store
I went to Ross for Less on Tunnel road in Asheville, NC today after i worked a 12hr shift. I was in line to make a return. I was behind a lady that had a purchase. The manager told the floor supervisor that she had to do my return. The manager asked me if i wanted to look around before i did my return, i said no. So she told me i had to get in line. I wa...

Let me just point out one thing, you want Ross to have numerous cashiers open, and for the store to maintain perfect order, its unrealistic of any store. And you try working there dealing with all the complaints, all of the attitudes of customers, them always wanting a discount, letting their children run wild, and crying, chances are after 15 minutes on a Saturday, you'd be rude too. Customers berate and belittle employees daily. Yelling at us for things we have zero control of. I've had clothes thrown at me for asking them to hang the items on a stand for me to count. I've had customers yell at me for their own mistakes, demanding things, and calling it the law. Threatening to file complaints if we don't give in to their demands. I could care less if you ever shop at Ross again. All of you very rude customers can stay away. That's when attitudes will change.
At my store our manager and assistant manager are very accommodating. Our loss prevention do what they can, even if that's going out around the parking lot to grab a cart to help a customer with merchandise. I end every transaction with a thank you, have a great day or a thank you, I'm sorry about the wait.
Furthermore, your attitude decides the employees. Have some manners! Don't come up to the counter on the phone, and don't linger around the store when we're closing... Courtesy..it goes a long way.
I work at Ross and I hate it! Employees rude? How about the million of customers that feel they can use us like their personal therapist and vent their personal frustrations out on us on an hourly basis. You have no idea! On top of that the computer system there is jacked up! We are timed how fast we go including you the customer writing checks and counting 45 pennies out- counts against us! Besides that equipment at my store doesn't work and you cannot print out gift receipts after the transaction. You have to press F5 for each item as you ring, God for bid you forget or press F6 which deletes the ENTIRE transaction! All this for minimum wage! Great place to work, you tell me... The price of anything? How about people purposely come in an rip them off hoping to get a lover price on them (stealing) or a parent doesn't control their kids that like to rip tags off or chew them? Do you have a clue? You work there! How dare you! Just by your rude comments I can tell you need therapy! AND you won't return anything, talk is cheap! People come to Ross to get designer good quality items for nothing. What do you expect? I am nice to everyone that comes into my store. I say hi to all my customers and they ignore me as if I am not even there or a bother to them- how would you feel? I get very discouraged after awhile. Whoever wrote this needs to work Ross for a month and you will take all this back! Fire the employees? Please take my minimum wage job! Please do! See how long you last! Please go to the higher end like Macy's if you want someone to spoon feed you! They get paid more and they charge 10X's more for their clothes! How can you say Ross is making out when their prices are cheaper than anywhere and CUSTOMERS are stealing every chance they can get!
I disagree with rude employees. I work at the Ross in Orlando on Sandlake. It is mandatory that we greet and treat each customer with respect. On my first day training, after a few customers I forgot to ask one of the customers about their shopping experience and I was reminded that it is essential.
At our store, wherever we walk we pick up. On each of my interviews EVERY person I walked behind including managers, picked up an item off of the floor in each area we stepped into.
Customers DO come out and throw tangled items into your hands which you must decode and match up to a specific color and size plastic ticket and hang it in such a way before it goes back out onto the floor all while helping someone who is in line next waiting on a fitting room. One rude customer can mess up an entire line, because you spend time fixing what ever mess they just made. I love the team that I'm with we are all very friendly at Ross, I'm sorry for those who deal with rude employees at whatever Ross they've encountered but that is definitely not true for all of the stores.
--Paulina B at Ross in Orlando W Sandlake
I work for Ross and I must say I agree with everything this customer has just said. It is a horrible place to work let alone shop! My first day there I could not believe the way the employees treated the customers. Just trying to get their money and shovel them out of the store. And they never smiled and were constantly rude! I personally got 5 minutes of training and then was thrown on a register and left by myself to cope. To say the least the way they run their business is horrendous! I started looking for new employment my 2nd day there. I've worked in many customer service fields not once have I seen such disrespect and blatant disregard for how the customers viewed the employees and overall store then when I worked at Ross.
Are you kidding me? It's either you get your god damn item or not. Go to freaking Kmart.
Ross employees are constantly cleaning up the store and I have watched many customers take items off the hanger and throw clothes either on the floor or over the rack. It seems to me that the customers are to blame. They are unjustly assuming that workers have nothing else to do but clean up after you. If customers come in the store they should expect to pick up after themselves or be thrown out in the worst case . If you went into a high end store would you go and do what you do in Ross? I assume you wouldn't.
The price you pay overall for a discount brings in a lot of customers therefore more people that trash our stores. The higher the price less customers, lower and more customers. So to blame the employees who can't control or ask a customer to pick up after themselves is just a fallacy that comes from you angry in this situation. I do not blame you for being upset but I do think it's not right to be angry at the store. Maybe instead of expecting someone else to clean up your mess clean it up yourself and ask others to do so. So you seen it is like living with a rebellious teen who doesn't do what mother ask especially cleaning their room.
I think that maybe one day customers will pick up after themselves but until that day expect the store to be in such a messing teens room stage.
Two of my family members work at the Lincoln and Venice Ross in CA. and I very much disagree. The store is know to be THE best in costumer service, they really are, they even received T-shirts for. It's unfortunate that you have had the terrible luck of having to visit the bad ones but You should not judge all of them by that. I'm hoping to get a job there my self.
As it was mentioned the employees work very hard to try to please you, and I hate to sound like I'm bragging but it's the honest truth, my mother and sister are their best workers. The store constantly looks super neat, and the DO stay until the late hours to have it clean by the next morning, I would know I pick up my mother and they aren't let out until the store is spit spot clean. They get out even LATER in the Christmas season.
I highly suggest trying out other places, as the prices are worth it, and as Malia mentioned, try to be a decent costumer your self by doing the things Malia Mentioned .
Bless you Malia. And to add to your list:
When you take something off a a hanger put it back on, don't bring out a pile of clothes tangled in their own hangers and toss them into the arms of the fitting room clerk.
If you pull a piece of clothing off the rack then put it back on the rack. It's not hard, the racks right in front of you. Why do you insist on tossing the whole garment over the top of the rack so it covers the other clothes, gets tangled and ends up on the floor.
You want to try on shoes, no problem, but is it too much to ask that you set them back on the shelf, right there in front of you, instead of leaving them on the floor?
The fitting room is not a baby changing room. That's what the bathrooms are for. And if for some reason you must change your baby there in the fitting room, then at least have the decency to take the soiled diaper out with you. (I've found used menstrual pads left in the fitting rooms as well, considering blood and bodily fluids are involved that's not just disgusting it's potentially dangerous!)
I agree with you there malia, I used to work for ross. And when we closed the store, we would cleaned up the entired store and it is very tiresome.
Both are to blame employees and customers too.
Hi! I am an employee at Ross,
I agree with the fact the store may look gruesome at times (and in some cases all the time), but employees are not all to blame for this problem. Ross Employees have to work gruelling hours, sometimes overnight, just so that the store can look very nice for customers. Try going right when the store opens, to see what I mean. I'm sick and tired of hearing/reading complaints from customers as though Employees are all to blame for the mess aroung the store! Some customers would just come into the stores and trash it like its their own place. Come on people have some respect for everyone else!
We are not lazy in cleaning up the store, it's just tiring to constantly clean-up and have customers continually ruin what you just finished organizing. Have you ever experienced that? It's like cleaning after your kids, leaving for a few seconds, and then seeing everything you cleaned up on the floor again. Thats how its like day to day. Its like cleaning after little kids! I personally adore kids, but adults that act like them are not exactly cute. At least kids can be taught to obey and be disciplined to listen, but adults would just complain, whine, and sue.
In regards to the complaints about "rude" employees. You cannot actually be a happy camper when you constantly see mess everywhere even after you clean up the areas. WE Employees are NOT robots! We're human beings! Yes I know it is store policy to greet customers and approach them with a smile, but can you blame us for being tired? At times we are just so tired on the job that it is hard to smile the whole time, but we will help you to the best of our abilities. I do not speak for the Employees who are just downright cruel and have no people skills, No! I'm speaking for those who are nice and kind; those who just can't help but frown sometimes because of fatigue and overwork.
This is NOT to serve as a complaint. It is to open the minds of many who shop at Ross and give them a sense of what we Employees have to go through with everyday. This is a plea to RESPECT the HARDWORKING ROSS EMPLOYEES and the job that they work in.
HELP STOP THE ONGOING RIDICULE AND BELITTLEMENT OF THESE ROSS EMPLOYEES--HELP KEEP ROSS CLEAN, by:
- putting back the stuff that you dont want to buy instead of leaving them anywhere around the store
- keeping an eye on your kids and not letting them run around the store
- leaving sealed packages closed, the way they should be
