I worked for belk and let me say it was the worst company I have ever worked for. I have never been so stressed out over a department store job before, even at macys or jcpenny. They purposely do not hire enough people so that the managers will get a bonus at the end of the year for paying a certain amount of employees under a certain amount of wages. Forget trying to get any overtime. I cannot say how many times customers complained to me about how there is never anyone at the counters when they are ready to check out. Its because they only put one person in each shift, so really one person is doing work that would usually take 3 or 4 people. And, as an employee, I was treated horribly by my supervisor. I know this comes with alot of jobs, but I was not even trained, just thrown on a register, and still got in trouble because I didnt know something. They also accused me of stealing when I used some employee "belkie bucks" to buy some godiva chocolate. I was outraged. I was eventually fired because I could not get enough people to fill out credit applications. I was the only honest employee there, other people made up fake names with fake ssn and they would get credit. It really sucks, because alot of those employees were buddy buddy with the supervisors, so they wouldnt get in trouble. Worst company ever.

It seems to me that all the things I thought were wrong with my store I come to find out are corporate policy for Belk. Our store is about 100 degrees at all times and were told the air is "broken". I think they just try to save money by turning the store into a literal sweatshop. They lose more than they save when people walk out because it's too hot to try on clothes. Also, the never ending push for credit drives customers away. I have people tell me that they can't shop without being asked 10 times if they want to apply. It makes me sick that some empl give away the store to tempt people into applying. Cosmetic counter girl had a family of four, 2 of which were under the age of 10, filling out apps, and then giving the mom full size "samples". And this girl always get a big pat on the back for the good work she's doing. I want to work for a company that has a shred of integrity. Belk once had that but no more. The younger Belk idiots have their heads on wrong. We are getting the cheapest merch. Just crap. The stores are falling to pieces. The worst of it is they are trying very hard to lower the pay for anyone making more then 10 an hour. My dept was flooded with part timers for the holiday season. They were on the registers while we were putting away stock, doing inventory, moving merch. The day after thanksgiving I was scheduled for only three hours on a reg. and part timers for the rest. They get to let these people go after the season and then cut my pay. It's win win for them. It's all very calculated and evil. I am trying to find other work and I will. Don't even apply to this company you will be sorry for all the headaches it will give you. And you'll be eating top ramen with the money you'll be earning.

Oh my gosh, I am wondering if all of you need to talk a House of Representative or a Congressman concerning this. Another one is Washington the Labor dept.

i worked at belk for 3 years. it is a nightmare. cut your wages, pressure to get customers to apply for credit, do the work of 3 people, and that is just the beginning. i went to hr head and told of being touched by an idiot they have working there, a girl of 21 went to her too about his sexual remarks. i do not want the hassel of suing but i did tell hr if he touched me again i would split his damn head open so she better talk to him. she must have cause he avoided me. they know about this person scamming and defrauding the company and he is still there. the air conditioner in that store has been broken for 3 years and in the summer it is unbearable. customers always complaining about it but nothing gets done. id had enough and left. this company is a nightmare to work for

Two things...First sorry on behalf of being an ex Belk employee that you could not buy your China. Next time just complain to management and they will give it to you for free :-) I stopped a girl who was known for ticket switching and her mom was an "elite" customer and the store manager called her the next day and gave her the dress that she switched tickets on for FREE!
Next, I am proof that you can be fired from Belk for not getting enough instant credits. I worked for the company for 13 years and never was written up for anything! I missed my goal in this wonderful economy by 2 and am now unemployed. I can not believe what a horrible company they are. The other thing is they did a major pay cut and pretty much brought most employees down to minimum wage...
Glad you cut up your card. To those that aren't having trouble now with instant credits unfortunately some of those employees are racially profiling and giving free gifts away knowing the person won't be approved but wants the gift (cosmetics). People are taking credits applications to the streets to save their jobs! Sad and SHAME on BELK

You are 100% correct hamans1. The turnover in our local store is astonomical. It's the worst run company I have ever experienced. They are completely out of touch with today's market and today's customer. A couple of weeks ago I wanted to buy some good china, 12 place settings of a Wedgewood pattern. I was stunned when I was told that, even though it was displayed with the rest of the china, I couldn't buy it, that it was only available to "registered brides" ! I asked why and was told only that "that's what corporate says so that's what we have to do". I pointed out that there was no sign that stated that, and asked how customers were supposed to know what they could and could not buy. The answer was "Sorry, I'm not allowed to sell you that china". I asked how many brides had registered for the pattern and was told "None"! I asked why, if no brides had registered for it and no one else could buy it, the store even carried it. Answer - "that's just what we have to do". I came home, cancelled my Belk charge, called Nordstrums and had the china the next day. They were very happy to get a $1400.00 sale.

i also work at belk, and im very disapointed in the company, i was promised a certain amount of money after a certain amount of time making my sales goals and credit apps only to find out that they had completely lied. I too have to do the work of several people and could make more money in a fast food restuarant per hour. Belk is a complete fraud, and is disgusting. I hope to find something else so that i can be able to at least feed myself. There is a tight group within management who stick together, and get by with murder. Anyone who is just and honest is not part of the in group and treated like ###.

Jokez - how long have you worked there? Do you know that you CAN be fired just for not making credit goal? Do you know how many people will laugh in your face right now when you ask them to open a credit? They are scared of the economy, and don't want to open them. I wish you all the luck in the world!

Seriously, you agree with her? someone who got FIRED?, FIRED!?!?! ...with good reason, I'm sure. Belk has to have good reason to fire someone. I work at Belk now, and I'm not a manager nor am I "buddy buddy" with any managers. I do my job and help as many customers as possible. I love my job. Just because you can't stay aboard the retail train doesn't mean the store itself is bad. You're just a ### who needs to pull your head out of your ### and get a job you actually like. g'day sir.
