My Experience with A Team Appliance Repair – A Cautionary Tale
Yesterday I contacted A Team Appliance Repair to service my gas oven, which wasn’t lighting. I explained that I suspected the ignitor was the issue, since the burners worked and the oven light came on. I was told the base service call would be $80, applied toward any further labour if needed.
The technician arrived on time and was courteous. Shortly after, however, I was asked to sign off on $280 for “Total cost of Labour.” After diagnostics, he confirmed the ignitor was the problem. Initially he said he would order one (3–5 business days), but when I explained I needed the oven that day, he offered one from his truck. It fit, and he installed it—charging $430 for the part. The total bill came to $803 including tax.
At the time, I accepted the charges because I needed the oven fixed. Later, I discovered the retail price of the exact ignitor is about $50. Even allowing for shipping, handling, and warehousing, the markup was extreme. When I called customer service to raise my concerns, I was told the charge was correct and that I “didn’t understand.” The manager, I was informed, “doesn’t take calls.”
I want to be clear: I am not disputing the $280 labour charge, even though it seemed high. What I cannot accept is being charged $430 for a $50 part, especially when the invoice itself states that labour costs are already covered under “Total cost of Labour.”
I share this experience so others can make informed decisions. In my view, this pricing practice is misleading and unfair. Please be cautious before doing business with this company—there are other appliance repair services that operate with greater transparency and integrity.
Recommendation: Do not - under any circumstances - call this business
