Personal training director
The incident took place on 01/17/2023 and 01/19/2023 at the Powerhouse Gym facility in Fort Lauderdale. I have been working out in various gym facilities for 16 years, I am a licensed psychologist, I hold 3 certificates with NASM and I did personal training as a side job in 2021/2022 in NY. I moved to Florida 4 months ago and I kindly emailed, messaged and even asked in person to meet with whoever is responsible for the personal training. The personal training director completely ignored me and after that I decided I don’t deserve this behavior and took my business completely online. 2 weeks ago I asked in the gym if I can bring a friend of mines as a guest to show her exercises during her 3-4 weeks stay in Florida and they told me yes.
So that’s what I did. 2 days ago someone came up to us and the same happened today too. He didn’t introduce himself and his position, the approach was aggressive and he was absolute I was training as a trainer and not just showing exercises to my friend. Now I don’t know what the “you look like training her “ means but as I clearly explained to him I don’t provide personal hands on training anymore as I took my business on a different level and I am an online coach. He called me a liar because a few months ago I sent my resume as a personal trainer and even if I don’t provide this service at the moment, I should had claimed myself as a trainer. My friend got offended and felt discriminated as she was really there to spend time together and get her familiar with some workouts until she heads back home in a few weeks. I asked him what the policy will be for me if I want to bring any other friends and he said no guests for me. I asked who is above him so I can I speak about this and he gave me his business card!
So my friend asked him who he is and guess what! Mr. J is the personal training director who ignored me a few months ago. What a surprise! So, number 1 walking on a client without introducing yourself is very unprofessional.
Number 2, assuming I am training as a trainer and not helping a friend of mine because 2 years ago I was training people in NYC is obnoxious.
Number 3 if whoever is a coach or a trainer cannot bring his/hers friend as a guest and show them exercises, you should make a clear section in your contract, that way I would know and not put myself and my friend in this uncomfortable position.
Last but not least when a client is trying to contact an employee for any reason, ignoring emails and messages for 2 months and disappearing when he/she comes to see you in person is definitely not an approach any employee should have towards the customers.
With this said, my friend won’t come back, I already mentioned the incident to 3 other friends who wanted to join this gym and wanted me to help them get familiar with machines and exercises, they got furious and they will look for another facility. And unfortunately word to mouth you might loose a lot more potential customers.
I will keep working out there until I find another gym close by (and because I paid $200 just to sign) and all this rude behavior makes me consider getting back on the personal training field because our world needs immediately professional and polite people.
Getting charged for my next month.
I cancelled my membership but they said I need a 30 day notice so they are charging me for my next month. I understand it is in my agreement but when I signed up I specifically told the sales man that I only wanted one month because I lived far away. He specifically told me word for word “if you just cancel before your renewal date you will not get charged.” he told me no stipulations were tied to the agreement because I signed up for the $1 down deal. I think this is ridiculous that i’m getting charged when I specifically was told I can just be charged the one month. I would not have even signed up for a membership if I knew this.
Desired outcome: Refund for the 2nd month ($50).
Owner/manager Jake
I have been a member of the gym for 5 years . Its been named "Powerhouse" for
about a year or so now. I have been utilizing the kidz club throughout my membership and was very thankful to have that service. The owner had unfortunately changed the hours of the kidz club and failed to inform any of the members that utilize it . He reduced hours , for reasons of his own , with out having the common courtesy for members. I did confront him about the matter and he proceeded to lie about informing members . At that time he cancelled my membership . He was caught in a lie essentially . His way of handling the issue was to cancel my membership. Its unfortunate for this gym to carry the name powerhouse ( Trinity, FL) with the way its being managed.
Desired outcome: reimbursement of my last month

Cross trainer
I paid £1600 for a Cross Trainer for my personnel use over a month ago it started to make a knocking sound quite loud on front fly wheel, I emailed 5 times about the noise and sent video, I chatted to someone called AJ who made it a priority issue and I received a phone a couple of days later and I was told a technician would be in touch to arrange a visit, not heard anything else from them, when I complained at first my product was in warranty.
I am at a loss as to what to do now it as really upset me because I cannot use my cross trainer in case I damage it more and I cannot afford to spend that kind of money for a item not to work.
Any advise would be greatly received.

Worst gym in the area. And I'm saying this with some authority because I have had memberships with the YMCA, anytime fitness, and the powerhouse. First the atmosphere of the gym is dark with poor lighting and dark blue walls. Second the customer service of this gym is severely lacking. After, checking out this gym my wife and I decided to get a membership...

African American Male worker accuse me of using this Company Business and explained I had worked out all day in the Gym under a Trial Member status I had to fight another guy almost over who was prejudice and made the Manager explain whatever issues from the Black guy who came up near me around the gym workout area with a white buddy he was with and almost in a gaye or angry physical attempt to hurt me. April 2012.
Yesterday a male swimmer was belittled and ridculed in front of an aerobic class conducted by a Powerhouse instructor.
The lone swimmer became noticibly embarrased when admonished by the strong-willed Hispanic aerobic instructor. He was called "a disrespectful man" in front of the class when he reminded the female Hispanic aerobic instructor to keep the pool door closed as per Powerhouse rules.
Doesn't the aerobic instructor have an obligation to Powerhouse and its members to uphold the rules instead of dressing down members who are trying to maintain the rules?
Maintenance of Facility
The Powerhouse Gym in San Jacinto has a number of things going for it, and a few things against it.
We are current members, having joined a couple months ago. So far, our experiences:
Pros:
1. Not overcrowded.
2. Has a lap pool and jacuzzi.
3. Has outdoor basketball courts.
4. Has a steam room.
Cons:
1. Staff, when owner is not around, act like they just don't give a damn if you have a complaint issue.
2. Basketball courts very poorly maintained. I approached the owner of the facility, 3 days ago, to complain that the basketball nets never are repaired. Weeks go by and nothing is done to fix the broken netting. He told me he likes to know about these things, but as of today, still, nothing has been done to repair the nets... Walk around the basketball court perimeter and it looks like the county landfill...the place hasn't been cleaned up in months. It is like they are happy to market a basketball court facility, to get your money, but then do nothing to keep it up. I also approached one of the staff, a guy with a Brewers baseball cap on, to complain about the nets. I asked, "Who runs the maintenance?" He said, " I can't tell you that". I said that the basketball netting is not being maintained. He just looked at me like he could give a crap, and then went on to continue flirting with some girl he was talking to...You would think this place would hire someone up front that would actually give a damn and act like he cared that he represents the place, and has a job.
Another staff member looked at my wife one day and said, " Are you expecting?". My wife is not, and that was such an insensitive comment it made my wife cry. Another example of putting the wrong personnel in place to represent the company. We did speak to the owner, who in turn, had the employee apologize. Thank you for that.
Generally, I am not a complainer about places..I adapt. But, I don't like being lied to. I don't like being told it will be taken care of, and then nothing happens...I mean, how much does a freaking basketball net cost?...How much does a decent maintenance man cost? How much does it cost to put personnel in the front desk that are actually happy they have a job, and are happy to try to make a place the best it can be? Apparently here, the cost is too high...

SNEAKY PEOPLE
I thought signing up for this gym would be fantastic. The facilities looked great and the offer that was made to me sounded wonderful. Of course it was too good to be true. This lady named Erica deceived me. I told her I did not want to sign a year contract because I didnt know how much time I could actually put aside to go to the gym. She said not a problem, she had me sign a paper that said I was not under a year contract, it was month to month. Well when I went to cancel the employees said otherwise. It took a while to figure everything out. My copy said I was not under contract however their signed copy (how was that possible?) said i was under a year contract. I believe ERICA had me sign both papers and hid the one saying I was under contract just to get me to sign up for the gym. They eventually did allow me to cancel my membership but of course not without charging me one last month while I was trying to figure out what happened. I never attended the gym once and they stilll went ahead to charge me the termination fee even though it was their sneaky employee who caused the problem. NOT TRUSTWORTHY GYM~from now on I'm buying the equipment myself and working out at home

Cancelling Gym Contract
On December 3rd 2007 i signed with Powerhouse Gym at 50E 42nd St in Manhattan New York, i decided not to renew my 1yr contract when it was over at December 3rd 2008, i was told by Ana (wh0 is very rude) that i would have to come in and cancel by December 3rd which i did on November 26th 2008 and till this day they are still taking a monthly fee from my...

I joined this gym during their pre-opening sale. I was told the gym would open in Early December and I would get a call. I also joined an additional nutrition class as well which was an additional fee. December came and went as well as January. I still had not received a phone call. At this time I was planning on moving and when I called the first time I was told that I would have to call someone back when they officially opened to cancel because of relocation. I asked when this openeing would be but no response. I tried again about mid January and at this time I was told, "oh we open tomorrow", I was surprised since I never received a phone call. I explained the situration and I was told that I would need actually proof that I am moving to cancel membership. So I moved and got my lease and had to travel 2 hours each way to show proof that I moved. To my surprise after all this I was told by their corporate office that my papers had not reached them yet and I had to talk to the office I was a member at. Now, I was told my the gym that they just faxed my papers (after having them for 2 weeks) but I could still not cancel for 60 days. Now no one told me any of this information about the additional 60 days. I called corporate office back again and questioned this and they confirmed this to be true, so I said I have to pay for a gym membership that I can not use because I live 2 hours from the gym. She stated "Yes" . I aske to speak to a supervisor and someone over the supervisor. I am still waiting a call back as well as the addtional money I paid that no one seems to know where it is but I have the cancelled check. I am sorry I ever joined because there is a lot of false advertising.

This place was great, state of the art equipment, great staff, and the most wonderful owners. Some people are just not satisfied [the fat lazy stupid ones] that use any excuse to quit!
Thought the gym was great, equipment state of the art, trainers on the ball all the time and the owners were terrific people! we need more places like this .As for the others that complain they read the rules when they signed up .oh well some people are just fat and stupid and will use any excuse to quit working out!
I totally agree powerhouse is the shadiest gym ever. I tried to cancel my membership and they gave the biggest run around of my life. First i went in to gym to cancel my membership and they gave me an 800 number so i called it and they told me they didnt handle cancellations and that i would have contact powerhouse. After countless phone calls and transfers i had to make another trip to the gym and speak with manager who was convienently able to call the same 800 number i called and cancel my membership. No one in there right mind should sign for powerhouse unless they want to get screwed and plus their equipment is awful.
Totally agree with these comments. I had a similar experience with the same gym. I canceled my membership after 3 visits and well within the 14 trial period that was offered prior to opening. Two months later I received a call from a collection agency stating that I owed them $770. The gym made no effort to process a valid cancelation within the 14 trial period; nor did it make any effort to contact me before turning it over to a collection agency.
A thoroughy dishonest and unreputable establishment.;
Dues
In early 2006 My husband and I decided to buy lifetime memberships to a then "Family Sports and Fitness Center". Everything was fine until August of 2007 when my husband injured himself. Three days after that injury I walked into the gym and spoke with the Manager. She said she would take care of it and when we wanted to start the membership back up we would have to come back in. October of 2008 my husband recuperated from his injuries and was working again so he dediced to go back to the gym. It had since become "Powerhouse gym". When we spoke to a employee there, who had known us from before, he said we had to pay $132.00 to re-start, then be charged the customary $ 45.00 for our duel membership dues and childcare. My husband gave him his new account information and paid the monies in cash. Within one week I got a call from ABC Financial stating the Powerhouse gym wanted to start collections on close to $900.00. I was shocked I asked why they said because we had not paid in 14 months. I explained I went to the manager spoke to them and everything should have been taken care of. rudely they said they were only doing what they were told. I spoke in person to an employee and explained what had happened, she then told me for the first time that "freezing" the account only last 6 months. How was I to know? The new manager told my husband that we are to pay 945.00 or no longer be welcomed at the gym.. That is ridiculous. To pay for services that were stopped and never used for 14 months. What do I do?

"An assault can be anything from a punch in the face to touching someone on the shoulder, as long as the contact happened without the consent (permission) of the person being touched."
Was assaulted by an employee while meditating. He insisted I was sleeping. I was erect and not slouched. He insisted that I was sleeping because my eyes were closed.
Today at 2:15 while waiting for my wife to finish her recumbent bike exercise, I was sitting down on a chair with my eyes closed when a young man grabbed me on the shoulder and said, "No sleeping allow" I was in shock and screamed at him telling him not to touch me. He could have spoke to me softly. He insisted I was sleeping and told him that was not the case. He got increasing ly obstreperous and did not believe me. It escalated from there and I told him he could kick me out of the club if he wanted to but he should not put his hands on me. I said it was an assault. He insisted it was not and it looked like I might have a medical condition. He had no business touching me issuing injunctions about sleeping when it was onyl supposition on his part. He said he was the owner. I said I didn't care who he was it still did not give him that right. If I was sleeping I would have been slouched. I sat erect in a meditative posture. He violated my space.
I have been a member for 8 years. Its declined so much. In fact a friend has chosen to go to another gym after men's urinals was clogged over a week. As for me broken equipment over a week. Once I almost tripped on the treadmill as it was ripped with a big hole once you started going. There is never any hand sanitizer at any station. I HAVE told them this many times. They are 24 hours why cant someone recheck that. I go into woman's bathroom instead of paper towel in dispenser its on counter by sink so its soaked and unable to use. My son and I are sorry we renewed our membership. We are going elsewhere.
I joined in 2006 through my company. I never went to the gym and after a year I decided I had contributed enough to my lack of exercise. I have been trying to terminate my membership since. I have contacted the gym. No luck. I have contacted the bank to close the account. Key bank said they would just reopen the account and charge me nsf fees. I am not in a Key Bank state. I will have to travel 1200 miles to try to close the account. I will never trust this type of operation again. They are crooks.
When the gym opened as "Family Sport and Fitness, " it contained new equipment and was cleaned regularly. Several years went by and the gym changed ownership. With the change of ownership, the cleaning and maintenance appears to have been severely reduced. A good bit of the equipment has torn or missing parts, and much of it is quite dirty. The smell is overpowering, especially in the back room and on even slightly warm days. There were paint swatches on the walls for years--with no painting completed--broken and cracked mirrors left up for long periods of time without replacement, poor ventilation,
poor lighting, unresponsive management--the list is endless.
Had same experience. I was member for a few years when it was World Gym. They changed name to Powerhouse, and of course, ok, whatever. I was moving to another state in March 2009 and went in to cancel. The manager made me wait for however long and then just took my cancellation and signed it without asking how we did, any way for you to stay, good luck, anything. He was rude and finally signed it and I went on my way. The collection agency, Paramount (Scamamount) Acceptance, continued to charge me monthly until September. I called them and told them I had canceled back in March, but they had no record of it. They told me to go to the gym and settle it there, and jeez, I was out of the state and couldn't go and get the cancellation. Turns out the gym HAD CLOSED and moved to wherever. I had to close CC that the payment was being made, but after 150.00 had been charged for services NOT rendered. The two "companies" were basically in cahoots with each other to steal my money. Lesson learned? Not sure...but I am going to use the internet to get the word out and my money back. The BBB has over 200 complaints against both companies and I hope someone reads this and GETS OUT NOW.
Canceling Contract
I have been trying to cancel a gym membership, since we signed shortly after signing. We have received the run around and was told you need to contact here and then, oh, they are switching companies. Call new company and try to cancel, now a month later and being told we never tried to cancel and we haven't with them, but we did with previous company and the gym. The current company billing for Powerhouse Gyms is ASF International and I am being told by ASF that the only way to cancel is if I am completly disabled and have a letter from my doctor to state that.
Why has it come to this. It should not take a month or longer to cancel. I never gave the deposit with the contract, but that did not matter, I am being told that once the contract is siagned that is when the contract began.
Does anyone have suggestions as to how to get out of this rediculous contract?
I am angry that companies have become this dishonest that they bind people to this whatever happened to pay as you go or paying for services used? I have not attended Powerhouse Gyms.
Thanks for Listening,
Buffy

Unfortunately, it sounds as though Buffy didn't read what she was signing. Typically, consumers have a 3 to 5 day period, after signing a contract, to cancel. The time frame varies from state to state. We don't receive the member's information until after the cooling down period has ended. We can only cancel a membership for reasons that are outlined in the agreement. We cannot make any exceptions. I really don't see how Powerhouse or ASF International is being dishonest, when all of the terms and conditions are outlined in the agreement.

It was a scam, knew it from the beginning! They took me for almost $500! Some employees there closing down the gym were selling fake memberships and filling their pockets! It's bull ### and I'm not happy at all.
Hi there fuzzbutt...lol, well what I am trying to do is see if I can get the membership transfered to another power house before moving forward and filing law suits. My sister, father, brother and several of my sisters friends are all in this situation as well. When crap like this happens, it dampens peoples moods and turns them off from going to and joining gyms. This was not good tact for this gym to do this. However, I dont know if you heard, but if you give the new gym $100, they will at least allow you to keep your previous membership. (shrugs) is it worth it?
Hey Rag1979, I have exactly the same issue at the same gym on Elizabeth Lake behind Applebees. Got the membership in October last year and basically am stuck holding a $202 piece of pink paper. Sounds like the former owners were selling "Promotional Memberships" to pad their coffers before they sold.
I thought my Bank (the nasty big one with the Red ATM's) might help but it looks like I am canceling all 5 of my accounts there too.
Exactly, had 1.5 years left on a membership in Waterford, Michigan, not to mention that my sister, her friends and my parents signed on when I did. The gym closed its doors without any notification or refund to any of us. When we went to the gym there is a new owner and a supposed new name, even though the building and signs still say power house, was told that the memberships are null and void, unless we pay $100 more per person for our initial contract to be reinstated.
I am very unhappy with this situation. They closed without any notice, and they charged me for the month of March.
Cancel your credit card before they get you to.
