My husband & I had a home equity account which was opened in January 2017 when we refinanced out mortgage. We used it and made payments on time over the years. Fast forward to Monday, September 12, 2022 and strictly by accident, I find out on my own, someone at Neighbors had zeroed out our available credit line, but left the balance due. Apparently, someone had seen my husband's obituary in the paper and changed the account without any notice of any kind to me - no phone call, no letter, no email. That money was going to be used to pay for a new deck and screened-in porch at our house. I have not been able to get any kind of answer as to why this happened and the way it happened, and why I was not notified. I read through all of the paperwork and was unable to find any notations of Neighbors Credit Union having the right to zero out a credit limit on a home equity account upon the death of one of the responsible parties.

Needless to say, this was extremely upsetting and infuriating for me. Now I have to reapply for the same account by myself.

I don't understand how the company can do something like that. Both names and signatures are on all the paperwork and to not notify the remaining party is unexcusable. I would like to know if this is normal practice with credit unions.

Desired outcome: I would like an explanation as to why and how this happened and why there was no notification. I would also like to have the account reactivated without any penalty or expense to me.
