Lane Bryant review: Customer service

Visited Lane Bryant to make an even exchange at your Bakersfield CA location #04831 6/17/26 at 3:51pm. My transaction number is 3027, register 001.
Upon entering the store I looked immediately for the replacement pants I was wishing to exchange, (18 to 16). Unfortunately my size was not available.
I approached the check out and advised the clerk of my intent to do an even exchange.
This is our dialog:
Me: Hi. I would like to make an even exchange, but I can't find my size.
Her: Do you have a receipt?
Me: Yes.
Her: Phone number?
Me: [protected]
Her: Confirm.
Me: What? The representative points to a screen for me to verify.
Her: We don't make returns if you have removed the tags, but I will do it this one time.
Me: Well there is only 1 tag I removed and I do have it here. All the other tags are still on.
Her: It's store policy. We don't allow a return if the tags are off.
Her: Your credit is $37.87.
Me: I wanted to do an even exchange?
Her: Oh. well I will have to change the transaction and give you a store credit and then order them and apply your store credit.
Me: Nevermind. I will just go home and order.
Me: Do you realize how rude you have been to me?
Her: I have not been rude to you.
Me: Yes you have.
Her. I have not been rude to you.

I took my receipt and left. I will not reorder these pants. In fact I will never shop Lane Brant again, in-person or online. I actually worked for Lane Bryant about 30 years ago. This is certainly not how I was trained to talk with customers.
I currently work for a non-profit. My salary comes 100% from our donors, (customers). I would never in my life argue with them.
In a world like we have today when most people order online and don't actually shop in-store I would expect your sales staff to be kind and helpful, not rude.
