I enrolled in Kaplan University online to start the July 2008 term. I was attending to receive my Associate in Legal Studies. After two terms, and a changing economic climate in the United States, I decided to withdraw from their program. This is because I was offered a wonderful position as a curriculum developer for a not-for-profit association. Since Kaplan had no program comparable to what I now needed, I searched and found another university that did. I had a Pell Grant and Stafford loans which more than covered the balance of the two terms I was a student. I took only five classes and left with a 4.0 GPA. However, they are now calling me daily (two and three times a day) demanding I remit a payment of $8000. They even called me twice on Christmas Eve! My student accounts balance showed I had a credit of $4500 because they took out too much money in government loans when I enrolled. Now, I supposedly owe the government and Kaplan!

To make matters worse, they won't release my official transcript to the university I plan to attend because I have supposedly not fulfilled my financial obligations. I am approaching the deadline to register, and no one returns a call or an email from this dysfunctional and fraudulent university. I also found out (from my new university) that their accreditation that they claim to have is invalid and a lie! That's right, NO ACCREDITATION! I looked into it to, and they hold no regional accreditation as they claim and advertise. They have blocked my password and denied me access to my student account, so I can not even check my balance or final grade report any longer. They just call me everyday. The only response I get is from a very nice academic advisor (the only person who has ever listened to my needs at this school, and I say school because they are clearly not a university) who is trying to get my situation resolved. They are supposedly sending my financial aid paperwork into loan verification. What the heck is that? There is no such thing since I have signed documents clearly showing all of my loan information.

Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT attend this horrible, horrible school! I have never in my life experienced such an atrocity, and this is clearly an attempt for them to double their money by making both me and the government pay for my five worthless classes at this so-called higher learning institute. I am currently enlisting an attorney to assist me in filing a claim against Kaplan, and suggest everyone else do the same. What they are doing to everyone is illegal, and they will be closed down if found guilty of fraudulent financial aid dealings by the government. Please help me close these frauds down before others who are genuinely interested in bettering themselves get suckered into their money stealing schemes.

Hi, My daughter is going thru the same situation. It's now Feb 2010. Have you had any luck with your attorney? What do they tell you. My idea is to put a "Lien" on their company but I don't know if that will work. This is so awful. I can't believe they are taking advantage of so many people. This has to be totally illegal! Have you contacted your local news station? Maybe they can get the word out so no one else becomes victim. Good Luck. Would like to hear of any progress that you have or have not made. romeorocket@hotmail.com.

I agree the same thing is happening to me right now. I have called them several times to try to work this out and they tell me this is all I can give you. That will not give me the promissory notes that I signed showing what I should have been charged and they only show me as having to pay back 9500 and the loans that I have out they took money from is over 20, 000. Maybe we can get a class action lawsuit. now because Citibank is in a bind financially they are not willing to work with me for payment. If we can get enough people together we may have something here. Do you know of any others that this happened to?
