The young lad today, 19/11/2019, who was on the cashier at 650am needs to improve his customer service skills pronto. He served customers before me with confidence, but blatantly ignored me when I approached the counter to order.

He walked by twice knowing I was there and then left the front area determined not to make eye contact. A woman dressed as a manger then appeared a minute or two later from where the lad went and took my order. It was awkward by now, but I had to commit after waiting so long and wondering if I was actually being ignored.

Waiting patiently, orders that were taken after mine were served first and they too included the same toasted ham and cheese sandwich that I had ordered. I watched the young man give out the orders. He called out order numbers, made eye contact with those customers and gently slid or handed their order over. Simple gestures, kind mannerisms, great customer service.

Unsure and confused with what this lad's game was about with me, I started to approach the counter as there was one bag remaining. My paper bag was already packed and for some reason was put aside. He hesitated as he knew it was mine. He made me wait and now he has to give it to me.

He then held his arms out while holding my cooler than warm mocha in one hand & meal in the other like the fictional 'zombie.' He turned his head as far as he could to the right as to avoid the mere sight of me and called my number 93 while dropping the bag in disgust on the counter.

What on Earth? I am appalled.

It might be nice to be important, but it is important to be nice.

I wouldn't bother making a complaint normally, except when I spoke to my work colleague about what I had just experienced. He too had approached the counter and the young lad didn't serve him. My colleague than left the Hungry Jacks counter to find something else to eat so he could take his meds.

He went back to Hungry Jacks wanting the toasted sandwich he saw prior. He jumped in line and then had to ascertain his order as the young lad ignored him again and attempted to leave the counter.

My colleague said that he could tell the young lad didn't want to serve him and before he ran off again, had to push his order on the young lad without him even asking what my colleague wanted.

People saw the treatment we received. I was so embarrassed.

I am in total disbelief that racist behaviour still exists in today's modern society. Perhaps utilising the services Indigenous Consulting Group (ICG) Australia can provide your staff i.e. Cultural Competency to benefit and protect Hungry Jack's reputation.
