AAMCO Transmissions - beware of quotes

On 10/4/2010 my 2003 Honda Odyssey was in the shop at a Honda dealership. I was told that it needed a new transmission and quoted a price of $4, 500. The van was not worth spending that amount of money so I called the Aamco located at 1904 East FM 1960 Bypass in Humble, TX. I spoke with Jay. He was friendly, courteous, and seemed to be familiar with the Odyssey transmissions. I told Jay the problem I was having and the diagnosis I had received from the Honda Dealership. I asked him what I was looking at in a worse case scenario for a complete rebuild and was told it would be around $2000.

On 10/5/2010 I picked my van up from the Honda dealership and drove it to Aamco. Jay was not there so I spoke with George when I dropped it off. George said that Jay had told him that I was coming in. George called me later in the day and said he needed to remove the transmission. It would cost $475 for diagnosis if I decided not to fix it. Since Jay had told me it would be around $2000 I gave George the authorization to disassemble the transmission. George called me back at about 4:30 and told me it would cost $3600 to rebuild my transmission. I asked George why it was so much more than Jay had told me and he said that it had a different transmission. Jay did not disclose to me that the Odyssey could have more than one transmission and that the price would be different. I told George to hold off and I would call him the next day.

On 10/6/2010 I called George and informed him that I was not happy and felt that I had been dealt with dishonestly. I stated that had I been told the correct cost I would not have allowed them to remove the transmission. George told me that if I picked the van up I owed $475 and the transmission would be disassembled in a box. He said he could do the rebuild for $3242 but could not go any lower than that. George stated that he couldn't discount the labor ($1543.82) and had to make at least 29% profit on the parts.

After doing some research I felt trapped. If I picked the van up I would have to pay $475, have it towed, and pay someone else to rebuild a transmission that they did not disassemble. I also investigated selling the van as-is but discovered that it was worth more with a bad transmission than with the transmission removed. I called George back and told him to go ahead and repair the van for $3242.

On 10/08/10 I picked the van up. George did give me the 3yr/36k mile warranty which I appreciate. However, I would not have done the repair had I known it would cost so much. I feel i was dealt with dishonestly by this Aamco and trapped into paying more once the transmission was removed and I had few other options.

AAMCO Transmissions - transmission repair

Don't EVER go here! WARNING! We paid $2, 593.57.00 to have our transmission rebuilt, and told it would last 100, 000 miles. It broke down 4 months later after 6, 700 miles, on VACATION! We had to have it towed in Alabama, get a rental car, none of which we have gotten back! It was fixed by Aamco in Montrose, Alabama, and has FAILED a SECOND TIME, after only 19, 000 miles. We are once again in a rental car and have been quoted $2, 700.00 by Humble Transmission. Summary: Original Repair FAIL, Rental Car expenses incurred, Towing Expenses incurred, VACATION RUINED...do yourself a favor...GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

5. On Friday, May 21st, 2010 the transmission failed a SECOND time after only 19, 900 miles of normal driving since the Jubilee Services repair and only 26, 600 miles of driving since the March 2009 installation.
6. The vehicle was returned to Humble Transmission on Monday May 24, 2010. It was determined by Humble Transmission that multiple transmission part failures had once again occurred. We are left having to pay $2, 700.00 AGAIN, plus the rental car expenses, AGAIN, to restore a transmission for a third (3rd) time in only 26, 600 miles and 14 months of normal driving.
7. The OWNER, Mr. Jay Streckfuss is holding to the original 12 month warranty.
8. I believe Humble Transmission misrepresented the standards, quality and grade of the goods sold, which I believe is a violation of Texas Business and Commerce Code Section 17.46.

The Bottom Line is this:

Three complete Aamco Transmission failures in 14 months.

Who needs this hassle?

Our warranties are the best in the business, as demonstrated by Mr. Carr's warranty being honored in Louisiana, without question. Mr. Carr was not interested in any of the longer warranty options available to him at the time of the original repairs. He could have easily purchased the lifetime warranty, which would have covered every part and all labor on his transmission for as long as he or a family member owned the vehicle. Mr. Carr mentioned that he likes to keep things "factual" so, while we did charge him for another repair, we reduced our labor rate, and gave him a three year unlimited mileage, all inclusive warranty on his transmission, and external transmission cooler, for a price very near what he paid for the original repair. The original warranty is quite clear in that the warranty is 12, 000 miles, and I feel it would be quite unfair to our clients who purchased the longer warranties, to extend Mr. Carr's warranty simply because his choice of warranties didn't work for him.. It is notable that Mr. Carr had no issue with General Motors, who designed, built, and sold the vehicle to him in the first place. Since Mr. Carr decided to slander my business, before he picked up his vehicle, I opted to rescinded the unlimited mileage, 3 year warranty which I had originally agreed to include with the repair, and re-instituted the basic 12, 000 mile, 12 month warranty. A couple of other factual points, I also included with Mr. Carr's second repair at this shop, a year's worth of oil changes, and reimbursement for his towing expenses in Louisiana, also rescinded. The retail value of those additional items, would have totaled over $800. In no way have we violated Texas Business and Commerce Code Section 17.46, or any other section for that matter. We honor our warranties, always have, always will. Mr. Carr's decision to impugn my reputation on Google is malicious, and will no doubt cause us to suffer from lost revenue, and lost standing among people who do not take the time to read the rebuttal. This whole matter will be forwarded to our attorney, to see if we should proceed with litigation for slander.
