My Dell Inspiron laptop is still under warranty. So when I had a problem with the battery draining much faster than it should, I contacted Dell Support who told me I would have to send it to them to fix. First, they tried to sell me a different hard drive which had nothing to do with the problem. But even though I would have considered that, I was told my original hard drive would not be returned so I told them to just fix the problem I sent it to them to fix and leave the hard drive alone.
After several weeks and a hassle with FedEx because of Dell's shipping instructions, I finally was able to pick the laptop up. When I turned it on, I was shocked that I was getting a a piercing noise with a white screen that said "there is no hard drive installed" and to shut the computer down. I took the laptop to a computer tech I use. He opened the laptop and, indeed no hard drive was installed. I immediately called and emailed the service advisor I had been dealing with but he did not address that issue, only acknowledging he received my voicemail. But sheer happenstance, while I was at my tech's store, I saw an approximately 1"x4" strip on his work table that looked like what was stapled inside a baggie to a "Post Repair Letter" that came back with my computer from Dell.
I am not a tech savvy person. I had no idea that the little blue strip inside the small ziplock bag stapled to the Post Repair Letter was my hard drive. Once my tech told me what it was, I had to return home to bring it back to my tech's shop for him to install. Why would Dell ever return a computer to a customer without first reinstalling the hard drive? That’s not how I sent it to Dell!
Once my tech reinstalled the hard drive more problems arose. The touch pad did not work. The touch screen did not work. My PIN did not work. The numeric keys did not work. He was able to fix the touch pad but my PIN still doesn’t allow access and I have had to leave the laptop in his store to work on some more. Apparently, someone at Dell created a conflict between the mother board and the hard drive that is keeping the laptop from recognizing a PIN and it is still not fixed. What the heck did the Dell techs do to my computer? They were only supposed to diagnose and fix the accelerated battery drain that would cause it to power off in less than an hour. Nothing else should have been touched. Instead, Dell's techs changed a bunch of settings and I don’t know if I will get it working again like it used to. In the Post Repair Letter that was sent with the returned laptop, it says: “Replace Cables. We ran full diagnostics on your system to make sure everything was running smoothly before shipping”. How is that possible when I have had all the problems cited above. It will cost me at least $200 to have it put back so it works like it used to and I still don’t know if Dell fixed the problem it was sent to them to fix. I emailed Dell's tech supervisor that I had communicated with about all of these problems but have not received any response.
Recommendation: I would think twice before ever send any computer to Dell's tech service for repair.
