Formal Complaint Letter to Consumer Cellular, FCC, and Attorney Generals Office.
Request for Immediate Number Port-Out Release & Improper Billing Practices
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally dispute Consumer Cellular’s refusal to release my personal phone number for port-out unless I pay the outstanding balance belonging to another individual, the late Gary who recently passed away.
This demand is improper, unethical, and inconsistent with federal number portability rules. I have had this phone number for approximately seven years. I originally ported it into Consumer Cellular from a previous carrier, and it has always been my personal number, tied to my Social Security benefits account and other essential services.
Gary and I both ported our numbers into Consumer Cellular several years ago, but we maintained separate numbers. His passing is tragic, but I am not legally responsible for his debts, and Consumer Cellular has no right to withhold my number or suspend my service in an attempt to force payment of a bill that is not mine.
Your refusal to release my number has caused significant hardship, including loss of access to my Social Security pay card account, which requires verification through the suspended phone number.
I am requesting the following actions immediately:
1. Release my phone number for port-out without requiring payment of another person’s debt.
2. Restore access to my number long enough for the port-out to complete.
3. Provide written confirmation that I am not responsible for the deceased individual’s account balance.
If this matter is not resolved promptly, I will be filing formal complaints with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, as this appears to be a violation of number portability regulations and an attempt to collect a debt from someone who does not owe it.
I expect written confirmation within 7 days.
Sincerely,
me
