Roomster the payment details are shady, and the customer service is basically non-existent

As with other customers who have reviewed Roomster, I signed up for a month and ended up paying for three until I noticed and cancelled. Unlike other sites that let you know that if you don't cancel you're subscription you'll automatically be enrolled in monthly payments, there is no such statement on the Roomster payment page.

Finally, the reason I cancelled is that I noticed that I was double-charged for one month. I contacted customer service to dispute the second charge and they basically said that they didn't charge me twice. I offered to send them a copy of my credit card statement, but they just kept insisting they only charged me once. I ended up filing a dispute through my credit card company.

As for the actual services, none of the emails I got matched the filters I set up. I was looking for a very specific rooming situation, and instead I just got blasted by a bunch of people with properties to unload. Craigslist was infinitely more helpful in the roommate search.

To sum it all up: The site will not help you find a roommate, the payment details are shady, and the customer service is basically non-existent. Stay away.

Roomster problems with their web site

I called the phone number listed for this company because of the problems connecting to the website and logging in, and a lady answered with a loud "Hello". So I thought I may have had the wrong number. Is this a company run out of someone's garage or something?

I never even used them. I have been posting an Apt. Wanted ad on Craigslist with a subject line directly a result of their spamming me that states CLEARLY, "No SPAM, No Solicitations", yet every single day I receive emails from them!

These ### just got me too. Signed up for three days (if I didn't find a room in three days, I was going to stay where I'm at). Didn't see anything about auto renewals, but [censored]... I should have known better. Everything is a god-damn scam nowadays. I immediately sent off an e-mail to my credit card company begging them to prevent the pending charge from going through. I don't know if they can, but if I dispute it, they will have to prove it...right?

Roomster they are as villainous and shady as any predatory financial lender you've ever heard of

Do not use this "service". All of what you are reading here is true. They are as villainous and shady as any predatory financial lender you've ever heard of. You sign up for a temporary membership, and are then socked with a $29.95 monthly membership a couple of weeks later. After pleading with customer service regarding my dire financial situation, I received a snarky email from a rep who relished letting me know I "agreed" to this subscription.

Roomster total scam

Do not use this site! It is a scam site. I agreed to a 3 day subscription, and after the 3 days $30 was taken out of my bank. I was never notified. I ask for my money back since I never agreed to this, and was told I should have read the fine print. Don't even deal with this site. I have only good things to say about roommates.com, and have found many reputable roommates. I am out $30 from this site and I just want other people to not lose their hard earned money.

Roomster the whole website purely revolves around deception and ripping you off

Stay clear of roomster! The whole website purely revolves around deception and ripping you off, after filling in a huge and mostly pointless form you have to pay to use the service then the real joke is that its worse than all of the free ones like spareroom.com and easyroommate! Absolutely useless website for what it is then on top of that they automatically set you up with a direct debit and charge you double the starting price every month - all without telling you! Don't know about you but i'd call that fraud. You'd be an absolute idiot to use roomster and you'd be guaranteed to be ripped off, this company should be shut down.

My girlfriend and I used Roomster to rent a room when we took an extended vacation in Europe. Even though we were renting a room in a foreign country Roomster made it very easy to find something that was within our budget and had all the amenities we wanted. A+

I was in hesitation for my accommodation. I went Roomster.com for searching a choice-able room within my budget. There I saw many of high quality rooms within my budget. I found a room from those rooms. Roomster.com was a useful website for me. I highly recommend this for searching rooms.

This site is a complete scam. I paid for a 3-day subscription and then I was automatically charged $29.95 THREE minutes after my subscription expired. I emailed them and have yet to receive a response. I filed a complaint with my bank and the gave me a number to call the company since there was no number on the webpage. The number was out of service (Go figure!). Do NOT waste your money. There are free sites that you can use such as facebook.com and craigslist.

Found a $30 charge on my account MINUTES after my original 3-day subscription ended. Does not refer to the smaller subscriptions as "trials, " which is what they are. Terrible customer service, they honestly don't care about their customers at all. I'm enraged and ready to spread the word about this scam.

I signed up for roomster.com in hopes of finding a roomate. They had a 3 day membership option in which I signed up for. After three days I noticed that alot of the profiles where either fake designed to get people to sign up for the site or just old outdated profiles. So since the membership was only for 3 days I figured that it was great that I didn't sign up for the whole month membership. Well after 3 days had elapsed roomster automatically signed me up for a month membership. I became furious and contacted customer service in which they told me the 3 day membership is actually a trial offer with renewal. However at no point do they inform the customer during sign up that they are paying for a trial with automatic renewal. The automatic renewal information is only located in fine print hidden inside the terms of agreement, other trial websites make it very obvious that you must cancel before a certain time period in order to avoid automatic renewal roomster.com doesn't care they make there money by trickery.

Customer service was very rude and refused to allow me to contact them by telephone, in fact they ignored my follow up messages as well. They basically got there money and ran without allowing me to explain that there websites needs to better inform the customer that the 3 day membership is acutally a trial offer with renewal.

This website is very suspicious STAY AWAY. In all actuality roomster.com should not even be charging for there service because there are few people with REAL profiles who will respond to your messages. Roomster.com also likes to post fake profiles of users on craigslist, so be careful when you see any links that lead to roomster.com

Roomster I would strongly suggest that you do not join their service

As a former user of Roomster, I would strongly suggest that you do NOT join their service. They charge a nominal fee to use their most important tools (namely messaging other users)...which is an ethically dubious practice, considering that Roomster sells advertising on their site. Roomster will also surreptitiously CHARGE A SUBSCRIPTION FEE of approx. $30 without you knowing. Asking for a refund is a hassle; do yourself a favor and don't even sign up. Craigslist works fine without the headaches.

i completely agree...this is one site that defines the word 'Fraud'...and as if their service is not fraudulent enough, approximately, 70% of the people that I tried to contact after signing up for the "5.95 3 day subscription" were scam mails...

Roomster shady subscription process

As other complaints have said, Roomster.com engages in some shady business practices. I signed up for a 3-day trial for $5.95 so that I could read a message that had been sent to me via another user on the site about a possible share they had available. What I didn't realize is that if you don't cancel your 3-day subscription within that time period they automatically renew your subscription-except at a higher monthly rate of $29.95. Roomster.com claims they do this so that your membership service privileges don't become "interrupted". I can almost buy that if they automatically renewed your subscription at the same rate you originally signed up. I find it ridiculous that Roomster.com automatically renews customer membersips at its highest, most profitable rate. Technically this information is listed in the "Terms Agreement" section that you must acknowledge read before moving up to a paid membership; I realize this releases Roomster.com of any legal wrong doing by stating in the Agreement that the website will automatically renew ANY subscription at the highest monthly rate of $29.95. However, almost no one is going to spend the time to read such a lengthy document, which brings me back to my original argument that Roomster.com does not use ethical business practices. The site itself was decent to use; I can't say I found anyone on there to live with and essentially paid $36.00 to read one message that said they had already found another roommate but the site was functional. All in all, I will NEVER use this site again and will tell anyone I know who is considering it to never sign up for it. I will go out of my way to make sure Roomster.com receives less business.

Roomster avoid this place at all costs

Went through the same thing as others. Signed up for the trial period then was charged the $30. As much as that hurt my bank account (i am not working and attempting to relocate from Missouri to DC so every penny counts) I can only be made at myself for not looking up reviews beforehand and not paying attention to the fine print :( At least roommates.com doesn't automatically renew your subscription.

Roomster beware of automatic renewal charges!

Buyer Beware! Use your credit card wisely and be sure to read the contract before you accept!

Briefly, evidently I (like many others) did not realize that Roomater has an iron-clad clause written into their Internet contract which automatically renews a one month fee charged to your credit card. Originally I only signed up for a 2-week plan of 14.95. During this period of time I realized that the Roomster services were not designed for my needs. I was simply receiving too many scam contacts, as well as unqualified people making contact with me. At the end of the original 2-week period, I never used the services. Then I noticed that my credit card was charged an additional $29.95. I immediately began contacting their repulsive Help Desk and leaving telephone messages with their Customer answering machine. Each time I have respectfully and clearly explained my misunderstanding of their policy and requested a refund. To date, I am always met with either; no response, automated form replies and no refund. This is truly a company that does not deserve to have honest people utilizing their services. It is unlikely that I will receive a refund and I want to warn those of you reading this to simply beware!

Roomster DOES NOT offer any customer satisfaction guarantee …

They could care less if you are satisfied with the service you are receiving from their roommate website. In fact, their customer service is really the worst I have ever encountered!

Roomster unauthorized automatic renewal rippoff

First of all the site was useful in finding people looking for an apartment to share. I had to subscribe to their services to communicate with the other Roomster members. I authorized only for a 3 day subscription for something like $9.99. That was OK. After three days they automatically renewed my subscription for a month at $29.99! I am sure they had some small print which I may not have noticed where unless cancelled by me will proceed with automatic renewal. The interesting part is that it is not an automatic renewal of another 3 days but a month! I can't believe the rippoff I went through. Be aware of it if you use roomster.com. Make sure that you login and check your account history and cancel the subscription once you are done with the services.

Roomster the website is designed to charge unsuspecting consumers for additional memberships

I signed in on day 3 of my subscription planning to cancel. When I logged in to find out you had already charged me for 30 more days. Looking at the terms, I was about 3 hours later than 72 hour cut off, all because I didn't get to take care of my personal computing needs in time to cancel before it was automatically renewed. I am a medical student traveling for rotations- I do not have access to a computer to take care of personal matters during the day while I am in clinic. The moment I got home, I tried to take care of this only to see I had already been charged. I have been recommending their site to my peers who also need to travel for rotations. I will no longer do this, and I am going to inform those that I have recommended the site to about your ruthless attitude toward customers. The website is designed to charge unsuspecting consumers for additional memberships and it works because no one ever reads the fine print. This is borderline fraudulent and most certainly unethical. I have found their customer service department to be very rude and short with their responses. Please pay attention to these reviews and do not use this site!

Exactly same situation. They should state a 72 hour subscription if this is how they want to run their business. Yes, 3 days is 72 hours but in the world of online subscriptions, if you start on the 1st of a month your renewal should start 3 days later on the 4th. Or at least renew at midnight. Furthermore, if they want us to believe that part of our money goes to keeping their site full of serious inquiries then they should charge to post a profile not when you need to respond to messages. Anybody could post random pictures of house.

Roomster rip off, scam, unethical!

This site is an absolute rip-off.. Stay away i've never encountered such unethical business in my life. Paid $6 for a one week subscription and authorized for no more charges be posted on my account, they've charged me $29.99 two different times and they have no phone number to contact, and won't respond to any of my emails. This is a rip off, find a way to make an honest living not ripping off college students who don't have $60 to throw out the window. Stay away from roomster!

Roomster.com is a total rip-off. A one week subscription should be just that. You shouldn't have to hunt and search the "fine print" to find out they will auto-renew. It's intentionally misleading. Legit businesses don't hide how they conduct their business. Their customer service is non-existent and the fact they make it almost impossible to contact them if you have a problem further shows they're scammers.

Roomster unauthorized withdrawal of funds

I thought I signed up for a 3-day subscription for $5.99 to help me find a roommate. I did not find a roommate using this site, and it did not seem like I was going to. So after the three days was over, I figured that I did not have to do anything else since my subscription was over. WRONG. I just discovered in my bank statements that Roomster.com has been charging me for an automatic renewal at a monthly cost of $29.95. Over the last 3 months, the total amount of money that Roomster has taken from my account without my knowledge is $89.85.

When I discovered the problem, I tried to contact the company, but they do not have any other way to reach them listed on their website except for an email to the Help & Support desk. I have only gotten snippy responses from them that are neither timely, nor answer my questions. Furthermore, what sort of company hides these charges then does not have a way to contact them? SKETCHY! So, I called the Better Business Bureau. As it turns out, Roomster.com had 124 current complaints against them regarding this issue. They now have 125.

Whatever you do, DO NOT give Roomster.com your billing information. Not only will you not receive any worthwhile services, but they will charge you a ridiculous amount without your knowledge and then do their best to prevent you from contacting them! If you have already made the mistake of using this website, please contact the Better Business Bureau immediately to help file a complaint!

Please avoid using this site. I signed up for the 3 day subscription and at the end I was billed an additional $29.95 for a month of access that I did not request.

This site could use a better lay out and I was surprised that there weren't more matches in my area. Maybe other people heard about the scam.

Overall, the site leaves you with a feeling of being taken advantage of and scammed because you're being automatically billed for the site's most expensive option. Roomster is definitely taking advantage of people at one of the most stressful times in their lives because we all know that moving takes it's toll.

Roommates.com, Craig's list or placing an ad in the local paper are all better and cheaper options that got me more results. I'm moving tomorrow and this was not from a connection or info found on Roomster.

Like others, I signed up for a 3 day membership and on the fourth day the billed me $29.95 for a month. This caused 3 other transactions to overdraft at $38 extra a pop at my bank.
What's worse is after you complain they stick a couple of "roommate referrals" onto your roomster mail so you will look at them, hoping to get what you are looking for, but the potential roommate has a locked profile. This is to prove that you are still using it after you complain.

I did not use their service after three days. I tried to find their contact information but they do not provide it bacause this is a fraudulent company. I was recently getting my apartment renovated and I had planned to do a full gut renovation of the space. Because of the extent of the work that I was having done I would not be able to live in the space while the construction was being done which was going to take at least six months so I knew I had to find an alternative for the interim. A friend of mine was telling me that they used Roomster to find a roommate after they had gotten into a fight with their previous one and had only good things to say about it. I’m usually very skeptical about these types of services but it came highly recommended from a trusted friend so I decided it was worth the risk. After creating a profile and purchasing a subscription, which was pretty reasonably priced, I was looking through the various listings and features of the site. They offer a bevy of tools that help pinpoint the best possible place for you. I settled on a nice one-bedroom place not too far from my current place and it was extremely affordable. The whole process went without a problem much to my surprise. Would definitely recommend to people looking for places for good prices.

My parents just got divorced and my mom decided to leave UK after 52 years and move to the United States. I wanted her to be close to me so I was looking for a place near me that was affordable for her to stay while she got back on her feet. I would have had her stay with me but my place is smaller than some closets that I know of. I found her an amazing deal on a place to rent right down the street from me on Roomster. It was super easy to create a listing detailing what I was looking for and before I knew it I was getting messages from people offering me rooms. I ended up choosing the one closest to me and I have to say it was a very seamless experience and I’m so happy I now have my mom with me, she doesn’t speak English very well but she’s learning!

Roomster unethical business, very bad website, not user-friendly, and tricky charge automatically without consent

I am not satisfied with their Website service - roomster.com. My 1st time of email sent to them thr their Website never got response, their website not user-friendly, and I cannot get help in a reasonable time. Yesterday, 2/23/2011, is the last day for the 2-week subscription I tried to cancel the subscription, but they already charged me a fee, $29.95 for a whole month. Next day, 2/24/2011, I request a refund for the unauthorized charge, but they would not return my money. I left my account open and did not cancel on 2/23, because I don't know if I am still able to sign in their site and contact them for the refund. The Roomster.com is a very tricky Website and very unethical.

Roomster dishonest sales practices

I signed up for Roomster.com after finding it on a search engine advertised as a free service site. I was looking for immediate occupancy rentals and after spending 30-45 minutes creating my "free" profile I reached the page asking me to purchase an upgraded membership. Since the site advertises it's service as free, I declined to purchase anything and continued with the basic membership.
When I checked the status of my account a few days later I noticed there were 5 messages from what I assume would be potential roommates interested in my profile, but I was surprised and frustrated to discover that you cannot access your roomster messages without purchasing a membership. It also states in the terms of use that you cannot put your own email address or phone number in your public profile. By doing that, you are forced to use their email service if you want to contact anyone on the site - which costs a monthly fee.
Once I realized that this complany was absolutely NOT operating honestly, I began to look for a way to delete my account. It turns out, you cannot delete your account. You can only disable it.
I sent them an email through their Contact Us page requesting that my account be deleted and telling them why I wanted to delete it. I received an incredibly rude email back about how most of the service is free and they offered no option for deleting my information from their site. I wrote back again asking how to permanently delete my account and instead of emailing me back, there is now a message when I try to access the site saying they disabled my account for “violations of terms of use.”
I will soon be changing my email address because of Roomster's behavior. I feel like I've been robbed because of their bait-and-switch tactics and my inability to delete my information from their system.

yes this company stinks.. but on the bright side.. log in.. change all the info to untrue info.. including your email address.. remove pictures and put random characters in the person info section (including your name) .. UN-check all notifications area..

this is what I did.. of course i never paid for anything so what i did just deleted my account for me.. the account exists but it's just completely random info that has nothing to do with me, my name, my email, or anything to do with me.. so it's as good as deleted for me.. maybe you can change your CC info on the site the same way? and when all said and done it'll be like you don't have an account.
Just a suggestion.. have a good day :)

The same thing happened to me. They sent me an email saying someone had viewed my profile and emailed me. When I subscribed for the 3 day trial for 5.95 so I could see the email, it wasn't from the same person they'd said it was from; it wasn't even from a person who matched my requirements at all. When I went to cancel the account it was just like he said; they wouldn't cancel it, only disable it. And it automatically renewed for $30 because apparently you have to cancel it twice, two different ways, and they make the website like a maze so you can't figure out how to do it. They also refuse to refund my money even though the new 30 days hasn't even started yet. My fault for not thoroughly understanding all their shady policies and practices before giving them my credit card info. I just wanted to get this out there so hopefully someone else can be spared from having to deal with this shady company. I suspect most of their accounts aren't real people anyway, as I got no legitimate interest in my posting. Only enough to bait me into paying them then no follow through. Stay away!

it is april 2019. roomster is a terribly dishonest and unethical sight. i am a lawyer w/ 16 yrs experience. I suspect that they are faking craigslist ads for roommates, then directing them to non existent roomster site...a link has never directed me to a specific roomster ad...just the site where i was ALREADY a paying subscriber and still couldn't get on via the app nor website. also charged me 30/mo. altho I didn't see that anywhere in the immediate signup...they're all abotu 'got ya'.

Roomster rip off

Simply put: DO NOT USE ROOMSTER.COM
They will charge your credit card, WITHOUT YOUR AUTHORIZATION after the trial period ends. You will get NO warning at all, of when that is, and they will renew your subscription for a full 30 days, for the outrageous amount of $29, 99 .
I had it happen to me, don't let it happen to you. They are a rip-off, and a scam. Together, we can make it stop, if we complain enough, noone will use their site anymore, and they will be forced to shut it down. I read horrible stories, of people having to CANCEL their credit card, because roomster.com would keep charging them without authorization! Let's put an end to it!

Roomster sneaky!! unauthorized charges

DO NOT USE ROOMSTER! I signed up for a 2 week service to look for a roommate. Which by the way did not work because this service web site is really BAD. When I signed up I did not notice that somewhere under the terms of agreement there is an AUTOMATIC RENEWAL! So I was charged 29.95 for something that I did not use and a SERVICE THAT REALLY SUCKS!
