Massage Envy built up charges

I went to Massage Envy about a year ago because I heard it was fantastic! I will say that the massage was great. They talked me into signing up and told me I could cancel at any time. While I was away, I had called to ask about cancellation. The woman told me that I could cancel over the phone but I would have to call back. I called back to let them know that I do not have the money to make the payments every months so I would like to cancel. They kept trying to talk me into freezing my account. I said I would like to cancel and they said ok. I did not here from them for about 8 months and just now I got a harassing call about how I owe 6 months worth because my account is on suspension! I tried calling to talk to someone about payment methods and they keep telling me to call back. I keep calling and they keep telling me the same thing, when all the while my account keeps building up and they will NOT cancel it. This is worse than a credit card company and I have no idea what to do.

my ex girlfriend works at the altamonte springs location and said the same issues go on regularly with every client. Its a scam to get you frustrated in trying to cancel or get refund. No one will call you back ever. They say they cannot cancel when they can. They tell you they cancel then dont. Its the wait you out game so you will give up. They are franchised but sounds like a corporate game to me. She gave me so many stories especially one where the womans son died and they still did not refund the money. Its hard sell on contracts and they will tell you its easy to cancel but if you dont after 3 days you never will have any luck. they work on commision and they will be fired if they do no thit 15% attach rate. they get 850 and hour plus a tier bonus for 15% and so on according to their memberships. thats why its hard to get out once you sign it. thats why you dont get all the info up front. thats why you shouldnt give your credit card number as you will never be able to get out of the contract. if you move somewhere where there isnt a massage envy within a 25 mile radius you can opt out. and rates arent honored in other areas of the country of what you signed up in. plus if you miss your appointment and dont cancel youre charged. again your credit card will be charged.

The contract that Massage Envy uses is called a Contract of Adhesion in Contracts Law. When this contracts are argued in court, it is likely that the judge will hold for the plaintiff (in this case the customer). In most cases, the court will refuse to enforce terms that it finds unconscionable (more favorable to one party) and it will construe ambiguities against the draftsman, in this case Massage Envy. If the terms of the contract are not clear about cancellation, the court will hold that the contract is not enforceable. This contract is something that can definitely be fought in court, and it is likely that there will be a positive outcome for the customer. I see the same complaint over and over, "I was not told about the cancellation" "I did not see the terms". Massage Envy is being misleading, and this is the type of cases the court loves, courts want to look out for customers and want to put a stop to big companies like Massage Envy, and their "Membership contract".

Massage Envy Asking for credit card over phone before services

I saw an ad in Better Homes and Gardens for Massage Envy for 09/15/09 for a $35 massage for the Susan B. Coleman Foundation.

When I called today 08/26/09, they wanted me to give them my credit card number to hold the appointment. I responded that I do not give my credit card number out before services are rendered.

But that is their policy. I told them even mechanics don't do that, only doctors offices do. I asked for the corporate number and of course guess what? nobody know who they work for. Why does that surprise me. Bet they know who signs their paycheck though!

If you have a complaint against Massage Envy, I found the number. It is [protected] or 4100. This is the corporate office for this company. I spoke with Richard Adams.

I would suggest you approach this company with caution.

DO NOT JOIN! They will rip you off and lie to you about the contract! The year long contract isn't a deal because you can not trust they will stop taking money out of your account... It took me three times to cancel it and only because I finally talked to someone and got their info while I was canceling the payment?!?! Then they do not honor the massages I had already paid for! And as other people I was told they do not know the corporate office phone number and with no luck I couldn't find it on the internet?.

Will never do business with this company again. Called about being refunded a package that was sold to me under miss leading pretenses. I've been calling this same MassageEnvy store to talk to the manager but still no solid reply. He (Jason) has been avoiding my telephone calls for the past two weeks and I feel as though the receptionists are screening my calls all day because I literally get the machine every time.

Tonight I parked my car outside of this particular MassageEnvy and placed a call where I would be able to see the people at the front desk. There were three women sitting there. I'm not sure if they knew who was calling but they were ignoring my calls just the same.

I will never do business with this company ever again and I hope that this class action lawsuit gets them for as much money as they can.

It's about time that people start standing up to this company for their terrible customer interaction, sales tactics and borderline scams.

I literally hate them.

My sister just quit her job working for this HORRIBLE UNETHICAL company. They make their therapists work for free, by not allowing them to clock in until AFTER they set up their rooms! They also clock them out for lunch instead of letting the therapists do it themselves! And the worst thing is that every time my sister gets a pay check it has no funds! She just quit and they gave her a final pay check TWO DAYS AFTER SHE quit, even though California is a FINAL PAY State. When she went to the bank to cash it, you guessed it, NO FUNDS!

I have experienced this same treatment by management at Massage Envy. My husband called in front of me to make an appointment for 2 hour massage and a facial during our vacation. I specifically asked for a certain date when planning our vacation and he confirmed our appointment with her. We got a call a day early saying we didn't show up for our appointment and all the credits we saved for this would be forfeited including the facial which my husband tried to tell him was still plenty of hours in advance that they shouldn't charge us for that. The manager Dan at Massage Envy in Glendale, AZ told my husband that since it was booked with other services he will charge for that as well. Unfortunately I understand how the technicians need to be paid, but the front desk girl incorrectly booked the date and the staff are not fail proof. We have an extremely prestine history with massage envy paying over a year contract each, never missing appointments, never randomly switching credit card information and treating technicians and staff very well. We are not the type of clients that would treat management, staff, or technicians rudely due to missing appointments we decided to just not show up for. The management should have looked at that and made an attempt to tallest not charge for a facial which wasn't schedule for 2 hours later. We even asked if they could reschedule us for anything for rest of week since it was our vacation and he told me husband "no" immediately without even looking to see if there was any availability. He was more than unprofessional. We decided after reading many poor reviews where this has happened that we should cancel. We called to find out that procedure and were told we can't cancel until Dec this year. We have been over our one year contract for a couple of months. It is never ending with them.

this people are thieves, they keep charging me every month, and I signed to have my membership frozen since they had a 6 month membership minimum and I needed to leave town for a while. the manager told me they could not refund me, if i wanted i could have more massages in the future when i get back, and told me to get a lawyer

Someone is filing a class action lawsuit against massage envy. if you are interested just search massage envy lawsuit and the member's information should show up. at this rate and with the consistency of these issues and complaints from the company I believe that we have a solid case of fraudulent business action.

Wow, it's amazing. Massage Envy has confirmed that you can't fix stupid. I have a yearly membership paid for in full. For my birthday, I was trying to make an appointment for my two sons and myself. Keep in mind that these are appointments for services I've paid for already. Because I would not provide my credit card informtation for their files (which they say they would not charge); they refused to make the appointments. Now why should I trust them with my credit card when they are still charging my checking account unauthorized. The automatic withdrawal for the paid for annual membership should have stopped in July. An unauthorized withdrawal was made in August. I provided a copy of the withdrawal information from my bank statement which provided the ACH Trace xxxxxx Massage Envy 063; however, I was told they could not do anything about the charge unless I brought my entire bank statement in. Not sure what my bank statement would provide that they didn't already have. Prior this, my plans were to get a familymembership. That is out of the question now. Massage Envy - you catch more flies with honey than vingar. You can get customers but maintaining them is what keeps you in business.

I actually work at massage envy as afront desk associate, at at our clinic we do our best to keep the CUSTOMER happy. Corporate policy is corporate policy whether we, or our clients, like it or not. Just like you would follow corporate policy at your job, we do at ours. Any of you ### about the front desk and calling the therapists ghetto clearly suck. You're the ### we hate who come in and try and get free ### by whining about everything. And obviously wee're going to charge you if you don't show up for an appointment... are therapists work commission based...DUH. Have a little respect.

OMG! You people are so ridiculous! This is done in most health field settings and spas. As a therapist in the industry, you do not get paid if you don't do a massage. If you call to schedule an appt. and than don't show up, the MT does not get paid and they could have been booked another massage if you had canceled. Put yourself in the situation as a therapist and let me know how you would feel about it than. If you make an appointment than you are making a commitment and if you don't show up, you get billed for have the price of the massage so that the therapist can still make some money. It is very frustrating as a therapist to sit there a see a no-show. MT's at ME don't make a lot of money as you may think and every appointment counts. Try to be a bit more understanding about the requirements.

Massage Envy harassment late night calls

I have 4 prepaids and went in for a 1.5 hour massage. I had a nice relaxing massage and after exiting the building I heard my name called by a person chasing me to "get a new credit card number".
I just got a new one and did not have it on me. I was not too worried since I had 4 prepaids and told her I would give her the number(future time)

At 9pmish I received a call from the "managers" personal cell phone(she was not even at the store) asking for a credit card..."so I can pay my therapist"!
She stated my account is suspended!First I heard of it...with no explanation as to why.

Since I had 4 prepaids I asked her why she could not use them...initially she said she could not use anything and tried to make me think it is a computer"corporate" problem.

Then she said she could use 1 session(1 hour )and I would need to pay the other half hour!

That is bunk...no one explained that to me when I made my appointment. They said"you have 4 prepaids" and left it at that(I have never had more than an hour appointment so this was new to me)

I told the manager I was taking a walk...which I was...no credit card on me...and I am NOT relinquishing that number. My payments are taken out automatically from my checking account.

I am going to call corporate and get my prepaids refunded...all the relaxation I acheived was ruined by their staffs actions after the massage...VERY unprofessional.

I used to work at Massage Envy. So, I'm an insider. When your credit card isn't updated in the system your pre paids are not available until your credit card is updated. By the way, updating your credit card would have only taken out the payment that was supposed to come out that month and it would have given you another pre paid (so you would then have 5). It's part of your contract under the second paragraph you intialed that basically says in order to receive your monthly massages you must be CURRENT AND ACTIVE (not suspended or frozen) and YOUR CARD MUST BE UP TO DATE. If you're suspended, it means NOTHING came out of your account that month and just because you had pre paids doesn't mean you can just skip a month or two without updating. Oh, and PRE PAIDS ARE ONE HOUR. If you were smart, you would have just gotten a two hour or maybe read your contract. It's all in fine print. Good luck getting corporate to refund anything. They are stricter then clinics are because when you actually work with the clinic they will help you on a case by case basis.

I work at a Massage Envy, and as much as I have MANY complaints about my boss and his running of the place you, and people like you, make my job WAY harder. If you would bother to read your membership information, or ask questions when signing up, you would know that one of those pre-paid massages can't be split. Its in writing, in at least two places. And they shouldn't've let you USE your pre-paids until you fixed the problem with your payments. They contract clearly states that to use your pre-paids your membership has to be in good standing, meaning all payments must be up to date.

There are PLENTY of things wrong with Massage Envy, you don't need to make up new ones just because you were too lazy to read the fine print on something you signed up for. Yes, the chasing you, and calling you late at night were un-professional (any of MY people who did that would have been chewed out), however, if you pay something on a monthly basis and you miss a billing, or more, then why didn't you ask about it? or did you just think that we forgot?

Massage Envy cannot get out of a contract

in 2008, my Wife went in for a massage and they talked her into the contract stating that she could cancel at any time.
In November 2008, she lost her job and money got tight so I went into the store in December 2008 and asked them to cancel my contract.
After giving me a hard time, they agreed to cancel and gave me a paper to sign.
This month, I saw a new charge from Massage Envy so I went into the store to ask them what was going on.
The lady at the front desk was very polite about this and told me that my contract had been put on hold instead of being canceled.
She went into the file cabinet and pulled out the paper that I had signed.
At the bottom, written in AFTER I had signed was the words "Three month hold".
Now, I would have NEVER agreed to this and I told her as much. She ageed to cancel me on the spot.
I then asked for a refund.
To make a long story short, not only did I NOT get my refund but the owner left me a message asking me to never come into the store again.

I was paying monthly and the covid happened..I kept the contract going...to support them. Not knowing how long the flu would last. Now I have 2000 saved up and I have 2 months to spend it...How on earth? you can only get a facial every 4 weeks! Get a massage every day? well I was trying but nobody did deep tissue massage. Sounds like they do this a lot. I definitely won't be using them again.

At the end of my one year contract I was told it would be billed month to month. That was fine, but I've had some health problems and then some major family catastrophes and have end up having 11 or 12 massages I paid for and not used. When I tried to cancel I was told I had to use them all up in 30 days (I think it was). I see there has been some class-action suits filed because of this issue.
Is there any recourse?

They hit you with hard sell after a massage when you are vulnerable, and then later I find out there are all sorts of extra fees if I want a facial instead of a massage, a massage for my husband instead of me. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, there are plenty good massage therapists out there.

WHAT WAS I THINKING!? NEVER sign up for a contract such as this! I too am having a horrible time canceling my Massage Envy membership in Folsom, CA. I had a 6 month membership that I thought was ending and then it just so happened that my husband lost his wallet and we had to cancel the credit card. In order to give myself the 30 days to use my 3 unused massage credits AND a $75 gift card that my lovely sister got for me directly from them I paid cash to make my account current. AND, i signed the cancellation form, but OH, it was just barely less than 30 days before the next one so i am supposed to pay again on the next due date. I'm going to try to use my credits and the $75 gift card I'll buy overpriced lotions and stuff before that next due date and then walk away. I hope someone sues the *%$# out of them!

Massage Envy rips off their customers
I too have had a horrible experience with Massage Envy. I did sign a contract which I was told I could cancel at any time. I had a few massages at the store I signed up with Perimeter Atlanta. I then went to another store for my monthly massage as I was told you could do. Then my amex bill came where I was charged on my credit card for my monthly massage. After a month of trying to set an appointment with the manger at the Perimeter store, I asked for the owners name and number. I was only given an email address and of course never received a call or email back. I finally went in to the manager who made me what for a half hour because she was doing payroll. She said she could do nothing and the massage charge would remain and that I would have to book an additional massage that month. I then prepaid my massages for the 6 months remaining. I was able to use one more massage and my year was up leaving me with 5 unused credits. The day before my contract expired I get a call and say I will loose those credits the next day unless I auto renew my contract. I had a meeting with the manager and was told that is the policy and she could do nothing and I would be out my 5 massages. MASSAGE ENVY TREATS THEIR CUSTOMERS TERRIBLY AND NO ONE SHOULD EVER USE THIS COMPANY !

Later When I wanted to cancel membership they told me that I cannot cancel it for a year. As it appears while the representative was lying in my face about the conditions of the contract I signed the agreement in haste. Legally all looks well, however Massage Envy staff proved to be very unethical. They purposefully confused the customer and tricked him into signing the contract while lying in the customer's face about the contract.

Massage Envy - Business Mal practice

Please stay away from these frauds.

They lure you into their contracts with false information saying. It will cost you $78 without contract but $39 with contract. What they don't tell you is you have to pay monthly membership charge of $20 which makes it $59 not $39. By the time you know this you must have signed the contract. When you ask them about it any additional massages in the month will cost you $39(nice).

Hassles to get out of the contract:
Get a doc certificate to get out the contract. What kind of sane person will sign the contract if he knows that he has to get a doc certificate to get out of the contract. But they withheld this information to get you sign the contract. The second is move away 25 miles from you current address ( wow so I have to move away to get out of your contract).

When I insisted that I do not like their service and to get me out of their contract they said to get it from other towns. This is real hypocrisy they say they take you out of their contracts when you move away 25 miles but they want you to go other towns to get service in case you don't like service in this town - Great.

Final touch - Their contracts are auto renewed. Incase you are not careful - you are stuck for another cycle.

Please raise your voice against them.

I was tricked into a contract too. I was told that I was signing up for a month to month deal and then after 3 days later I called them and said that I actually would not be interested in them deducting my credit card monthly and that I'd just prefer to pay as needed whenever I need a massage. That's when I was told that I was binded to a one year contract and I was stuck. Message Envy is the biggest CROOKS and I'm going to see it thru that my complaint about them goes everywhere so that no one else gets scammed. I'm sure this will catch up to them eventually because I totally believe in KARMA... BBB is going to hear about their San Diego, CA location and any other company I can get thru including the radio stations that advertise it. Message Envy is tricking customers. Make sure you READ THE WHOLE CONTRACT before signing anything and take a copy of that contract the spot. DO NOT TRUST MESSAGE ENVY!

Massage Envy resale of biofreeze - not for resale packet

Wanted to get 5 of the clearly marked NOT FOR RESALE samples of Biofreeze from the Massage Envy on Buffalo Speedway in Houston, TX. Was told they would be $1.00 each. When "Clinic Administrator" was asked why they were charging for something marked 'not for resale' he told me they were sent as samples and if I wanted to, I should buy a bigger size. I told him he had not answered my question...and he still didn't. He kept saying they were samples and even though they were marked "not for resale' they would cost me a dollar. I asked if Biofreeze was aware that they were reselling items they received for free and he told me 'yes'. I told him that I had a hard time believing this so that I would write the company and the BBB - he told me to go ahead and do both. Okay. No problem. He also made the statement that he could not understand why I was making such a big deal over $1.00 per packet with everything else going on in the world.

The same 'Clinic Administrator' at the Buffalo Speedway Massage Envy in Houston, TX also told me he was 'as high as I could get' when I asked him for his supervisor's name and contact information. When I reminded him that he answered to someone, he scrawled out a phone number - refusing to provide a name or a physical location to which I could mail a letter. When told he needed to make it legible, he finally did so after two directives. At this point, I asked for a name to go with the number and he said he could not give out that information. At some point in all of this, the very tall (say over 6'1) 'Clinic Administrator' towered over me to the point where his shirt was touching my arm and 'demanded' that I leave his office or he would call the police.

At no time did Mr. "Clinic Administrator' offer to GIVE me the samples - 5 of them - which COST MASSAGE ENVY NOTHING by his own admission. He kept trying to get me to buy the larger size.

I was in the process of renewing my 12 month membership...with cash...well, he lost that one. I renewed for 6 months - and will cancel at the EARLIEST possible time. Let me see...what would have been nearly $600 in total revenue for MASSAGE ENVY is now less than $300...all behind a product they received for FREE but wanted to resell. IS THAT GOOD MANAGEMENT?

Now, off to write the BBB and Biofreeze...just as promised.

Massage Envy just work through the pain

I feel bad for the decent massage therapists that actually work for this place. Yes, there are some that know what they are doing, but then there are others that don’t’ know what the hell is going on besides the fact that they have 40 minutes to harm and destroy people. My first massage there was great. I felt refreshed and wonderful, so I was hooked when they spoke of the monthly membership. However, as previously stated, life happens. There are hurricanes, deaths, job loss, school situations, etc. It is only natural that people forget that they have been accruing massages at a third rate "health and wellness" facility. By the time Spring Break rolled around, I decided that I would take advantage of the massages. I went to ME and asked for a deep tissue massage. They had just the guy for me! I can say that the gentlemen was very nice and professional, but there are certain things that are not done. Such as when someone is wincing and verbally expressing their pain, to say, "Just work through the pain. Its because of you that your body is so tight and stressed." At one point, I had to stop the massage to take a breather. Long story short, I wake up the next day to find my back in intense pain. He had warned me that I may experience mild difficulties, so I brushed it off and took some Advil and spent the day in pain. I decided to go back, which was a mistake. I told them what had happened and he gave me some ###-a-ninny excuse as to what had happened. The second massage led to such intense pain, that on March 27, I went to the emergency room bc my back had completely gone out. Mind you, I have never had back pain in my life, nor have i ever suffered internal bruising from a massage before. I am a fit, 25 year old female. The doctor at the hospital told me that he believes that the intensity of the back massage had caused bruising and then triggered muscle spasms. Without insurance, this incident would cost me 10, 000, but luckily I may have to just pay 20% of that. Oh, and I missed school, work, and social activities because of the pain. I was told not to contact ME, until all my insurance issues were cleared. Last week, I called and told them the situation and was prepared to give them the documentation from the hospital and follow up doctors appointments. All I wanted was for them to reimburse me for the two massages I received that caused injury and for them to give me money for the massages I never used. They were unwilling and rude when i spoke with them. The new manager admitted guilt that it has been known that there are some therapists that are very heavy handed and she could believe that I got hurt! Yet, they would not budge on the issue of compensating me for the massages. Then they told me that my membership had ended in April and that I lost massaged. Funny, when i was there, I spoke with the girl about my membership and told her to keep drafting my card, knowing all too well from others that I would lose my massages once I stopped my membership. Long story short, do not go to this place. They smear the name of the massage industry with their cheap massages and horrible management. I have contacted a personal injury attorney and I am willing to take this to the next level.

I am interested in hearing more about your 'case' against Massage Envy. I had a similar situation. During my session, the therapist manipulated my neck/cervical spine so hard that I literally could not breathe. I immediately told him it was way too much pressure and that it was excruciating. He said that he "had to work deep into the muscles and connective tissue" and a litle pain was normal. Long story short-I drove straight to the ER and my life has been a disaster ever since. I went to several doctors-had trigger point injections, etc bc nobody thought that it could be anything more than just severe muscle spasms/ etc from the massage. I finally found a great specialist who immediately ordered an MRI-I have two ruptured discs in my back and am now considered 'disabled.'
My boss was patient at first with my absences and lower standard of work (missed deadlines, etc) but eventually he and our HR Manager decided to contact my doctor for more information. His findings were that I was disabled and; therefore, covered by ADA. Dr suggested a few reasonable accomodations, but the only one my work agreed to was a one month unpaid leave of absence to start last Monday. I was fired on Wednesday. I only have a couple more weeks of insurance, am a single mom of three and cannot afford COBRA. In order to collect unemployment, you have to able to work; I am currently disabled so I don't know if I will be able to collect or not. Meanwhile, I have had two cervical epidurals to relieve the pain-my dr said he would do one more but if that didn't help enough I would have to have surgery. How am I going to have surgery and recover with no job, no income, no insurance. etc etc. If anyone else has a similar situation and is willing to talk about it, please let me know. I am looking for an attorney to help me with this (may have found one last night, but not sure if he is taking the case)

Do you people ever tell your terapists that your hurting during the treatment... I'm a massage therapist from a NY office. I just moved to nevada. I always tell people before the treatment and ask a few more times during the treatment, hows the pressure... You've probably had bad therapists and yes that is the companies fault. I've worked with bad therapists before...

I've worked with bad companies with good therapists too. Don't blame the company, blame the owners. The is a franchise. I consider myself very professional and good what I do and I know its har to see who is good before you enter their room...

I completely agree! I just had a massage at me in hyde park (cincinnati). I went because I have pain from running and working out. however, I spent the entire session in the most excruciating pain I have ever been in in my life, and in the morning, my legs hurt sooo bad I could not even walk, let alone run, which I was hoping would be easier and free of pain after a massage. I will never go back to massage envy again, cannot believe I actually had to pay for such torture, and urge everyone not to go to them either. they are a horrible excuse for a massage parlor.

Massage Envy unauthorized use of credit card

This is a warning to any future Massage Envy Customers and/or Customers looking to end their membership.
After 1 year of being a member and the economy slowing down I cancelled my membership. However, they continued to bill my credit card. I continued to call them and they continued to tell me it most certainly would not happen again. After the 3rd verbal I provided a written form that they confirmed receipt of. Come to find out my credit card has now been billed for 6 months worth of visits that I have not authorized OR used.

They happily stated they would credit account as they do have the written communicaton from me on file from 6 months ago. BUt the bottom line is to all of you. Change your credit card number when you cancel your membership or they will bill you "By accident." It is stealing from the consumer.

I am not the first person to experience such an ethics issue with Massage Envy, a similar experience happened to a friend. I would rather pay the 70.00 per visit for a massage from a trusted salon the the thiefs at massage envy.

Trust me...when you cancel your membership change your credit card # and you will have no problems.
Please spread the word and give your business to an ethical organization that isn't about stealing from the consumer.

I had put my membership on hold during an extended amount of time, and upon my return, the Plymouth Massage Envy clinic attempted to charge me for the months I had been on hold. Luckily my credit card company notified me per their fraud policies. On another note, the Plymouth Massage Envy intentionally misled me regarding my membership cancellation. They specifically told me I would be charged one more payment after I submitted the letter, and I would have 30 days from that last payment to use all of my hours. Today I was informed that I would have 30 days from the day I submitted the letter. Certainly had they told me that the 30-day clock began at the time the letter was received, I would have held onto it until the day before my last payment posted. However now I have fewer days to expend my hours, thanks to the dishonesty of Plymouth Massage Envy.

I absolutely agree. Tried to cancel right after signing due to layoff and am having the same issues. Won't return phone calls, rude, disrespectful. I did have to close my bank account ultimately to protect myself. Manager had no concept of professionalism or how to deal properly with customers. I have even had my honesty questioned. Seriously? No company should get away with this. I finally had to be my own advocate and speak up. I would never recommend this company, especially this location, to anyone. It is very sad as the actual therapist I had was wonderful. Mika, if you go elsewhere, let me know. YOU and your clients deserve better.

I am a massage therapist with my own small practice & I hear these comments so often about Massage Envy. Some of my new clients tell me stories about Massage Envy that are just so hard to believe. I've heard everything from noisy rooms, soiled linens, unprofessional massage therapists & unauthorized charges on credit cards. Please be aware that a professional massage therapist who cares about her clients & business will make your massage session(s) enjoyable & will want you to keep coming back. I do everything in my power to make my clients comfortable. I spend time talking to them about their goals for their session(s), give the best massage I can give & never make anyone feel hurried. I understand that clients will occasionally cancel an appt. Most of my clients will call to tell me this. I have never billed a credit card for a missed appt nor will I ever. This is the difference between Massage Envy & a massage therapist with her own business. Emergencies happen, children get sick, work schedules can go in to overtime, etc... I try to be flexible & clients appreciate this. It doesn't mean I will be taken advantage of. Please... give your business to a massage therapist who cares about you & working with you, not a greedy corporation who is interested only in your money.

Massage Envy unappropriate staff

This would be the first and last time I visit this center. I am used to a professional spa and masseuse. I do not feel comfortable having the therapist talk to me about personal details of what is going on in the office neither there personal life outside of work. I find this very unprofessional and the staff needs to get properly trained, educated, or terminated. I will not recommend this place ever.

I went to massage envy for a massage. I had gone to this same therapist several times. I left my purse unzipped, like an idiot. I fell asleep during my massage and I woke up to find money in my wallet was missing and my Itouch. I called the police and am waiting to here back from the owner.

Massage Envy rubbed the wrong way

It doesn't matter if I mention which Massage Envy I'm having a problem with. This problem exists at all of them. I'm sure the employees and managers are all very nice people, as a matter of fact everyone I've talked to has been friendly and apologetic about not being able to help me. BUT, I am unhappy with having paid $49.99 each month for 6 months and having received no massages in return. It's a point of principle for me now. Being a reasonably sane person, I refuse to submit to a massage at this place because, who wants to get a massage from someone who is doing it at the proverbial "gunpoint".

One year ago I treated myself to a 5 minute massage from a masseuse that was set up in Walmart of all places. Afterward they invited me to get a "membership" in which I would get one massage every month for a low $39.99. What a bargain, I thought. I would also be allowed to cancel said membership within 30 days.

Before ever getting my first massage my account was debited for the first month. Not $39.99 as promised, I might add.

Then I got the news that my mother had cancer and would be coming to live with me while she underwent treatment. This put me in a financial situation which did not allow the new expense of monthly massages. I called to cancel. I was told "I'm sorry, you can't cancel, but we can put your account on a 6 month hold." The rest is as you'll read in everyone else's complaint.

Massage Envy rubbed me the wrong way! And they never laid a hand on me.

Read your contract with them before you get pissy when you can't cancel. I'm used to be a member until I began working at one for a while. They worked with me through a lot of financial issues probably because I approach them with a humble and polite attitude. Remember, these people are doing their jobs and not answering the phone everytime they call you to remind you that you owe money for services that you agreed to pay racks up so don't spread lies that it's a ripoff when several members who actually pay on time and follow agreements SIGNED BY THEM benefit from the company.

Massage Envy terrible business practices

I have been with Massage Envy for over a year, close to two years. I never had a complaint about the massages themselves. But then I had to have a surgery, and then my brother passed away, then it was the holidays, then my job changed - anyway I was not able to use my prepaid massages. When it got to the point that I had seven prepaid massages, I went in to cancel my membership. They handed me the form for my signature - but I read the paper which stated that the next months fee would not be taken from my account, but I would LOSE my prepaids. If I stop paying the monthly fee - I become a non-active member and will not be allowed to get the massages that I have already paid for!

Also, after discussing this nonsense with some co-workers, I found out that among the six of us talking, five of us had memberships, but I was the only one paying $59/mon, everyone else was paying $39/mon on their contracts! When I comfronted the manager about this I was told that this was not possible and I must be mistaken - but why would anyone lie about this. When I gave them the names of the others, they verified that a "mistake" had been made on their contracts and would be corrected.

I am a Massage Therapist with Massage Envy and I am sad to say that I agree with many of the complaints listed here.
Not only are these franchise opperated by folks who have NO CLUE what the description of a Massage Therapist is they also lack customer service skills and much required business sense.
The membership and it's upgrades are a waste of money! The pay recieved as a Therapist is beyond insulting for as hard as they expect us to work. Regardless of these conditions I have been forced to remain at Massage Envy due to the economy and lack of jobs.

These companies ARE unprofessional and uneducated as are the employees they choose to represent the front desk!
As a Therapist my main concern is the well being of my client regardless of my working conditions I will ALWAYS see to it that my massage exceeds my clients expectations!

I can't believe this place. Purchased a 12 month subscription only to find out you need to use them before the end of the 12 months. But, the put the membership on a gift card. This is where they will get into legal trouble (at least in California) as it's illegal to have expiration dates on gift cards. I'm pursuing legal action.

I have to agree with the poor business practice, I signed up for a 6 month contact after my first massage (which I loved), I asked the right questions (burned in the past from contracts) wanted to be sure that when my six month contract was up that the contract was over, no tricks or hidden clauses. I was assured at that time it was over at the end of the 6 months, NOT, my debit card was charged on the 7th month. I called and was assured it wouldn't happen the following month. Instead of a refund I said I would come in to use my free massages that I didn't get to due to new job and holidays. This happened again on the 8th month and again on the 9th month before I was finally told I had to come in to sign a cancellation form or they could fax me a copy (never received by fax) so I went to cancel my membership in person, received my refund, when the lady behind the counter preceded to tell me that my contract says when my 6 months were up, that I would still be billed until I came into sign the cancellation paperwork...I asked her how come I wasn't told this when I repeatedly asked about the contract and how many people read the fine print for a massage company. She did apologize for the miscommunication on their part. Oh, I lost my free massages also once I signed the cancellation paperwork. So, all I can say, always beware of the fine print in contracts..massages were GREAT, contracts BEWARE.

It's like a gym membership, when you cancel your membership..you are no longer a member, and therefore don't get to use the gym. When you cancel your gym membership, you don't get money back for months that you don't go, you are just no longer a member. With Massage Envy, at least when you don't have time to go, you don't lose your massages, they stay in your account for a s long as you are a member. You should just remain a member until you use all you massages, and then cancel, make it a great month and go twice a week! Sounds like a great month to me!

Massage Envy completely awful experience

I called this Massage Envy nine (9) times over months requesting a female therapist. Had never been there. Never available because not one on staff. Finally hired a new one and became available, went to appointment but apparently 'bait and switch' as on arrival - not available only male therapist. Respectfully declined. In apology, I was given a coupon for a one hour massage for 'introductory price' of $39.00. Huh? - That's an offer they give everyone on first visit.

About a month later scheduled again. I was asked if I had ever been to another Massage Envy. I said I had about 350 miles away. Had massage which was just okay. At end went to pay - told $95.00. Double Huh? I explained I have never been there before and had a coupon also. The confirmed owner (Johanna Logue) stated that since I had been to another Massage Envy four (4) months earlier, the coupon would not be honored, unless I joined right there and then. Yeah sure.

Johanna Logue in my opinion has the IQ of a turnip and the customer service skills of a bounty hunter. Her entire work history is centered in bank back offices - not with customers. I told her I'm paying the coupon rate and if she didn't like it she could call the cops. She stated that 'she was entering notation on the computer to 'blackball' me from going to any Massage Envy in the USA - ever.' Triple Huh? My loss I guess. Completely awful experience, and a formula for business failure.

my ex girlfriend works at the altamonte springs location and said the same issues go on regularly with every client. Its a scam to get you frustrated in trying to cancel or get refund. No one will call you back ever. They say they cannot cancel when they can. They tell you they cancel then dont. Its the wait you out game so you will give up. They are franchised but sounds like a corporate game to me. She gave me so many stories especially one where the womans son died and they still did not refund the money. Its hard sell on contracts and they will tell you its easy to cancel but if you dont after 3 days you never will have any luck. they work on commision and they will be fired if they do no thit 15% attach rate. they get 850 and hour plus a tier bonus for 15% and so on according to their memberships. thats why its hard to get out once you sign it. thats why you dont get all the info up front. thats why you shouldnt give your credit card number as you will never be able to get out of the contract. if you move somewhere where there isnt a massage envy within a 25 mile radius you can opt out. and rates arent honored in other areas of the country of what you signed up in. plus if you miss your appointment and dont cancel youre charged. again your credit card will be charged.

Massage Envy poor customer service

Whatever you do, do NOT sign a membership with Massage Envy! Not only is their contract a GIANT pain to get out of, but when you do what they tell you, you STILL can't get out of it!

I was pregnant when I stupidly signed into getting massages, and having a heap of complications with my sciatic nerve, and carpal tunnel, etc, and my O.B advised me to get massage therapy. Well, I went in and got my massage for the initial $39 or watever it was, and got suckered into a contract.

Well after having a new baby, we figured that we couldn't afford it anymore, so I called in to ask what it would take to cancel my membership... The first lady told me it wouldn't take anything to cancel, that I could just do it, and have no consequence. We waited so I could get my last free massage, and then after that I tried to cancel... Well the lady at the desk said that I had to cancel where I signed up with it since I was at a different location, and said that I needed 30 days notice to cancel. Then we went to the original place where I signed the contract and yet another lady told me that I had to have a Dr's note, had to live outside a providing area (25 miles from a location), or would have to pay a fee. Well I had long since had the baby, and I had been having back problems and went to my doctor and they took an x-ray, and then an MRI. Not long after, I was told that I have 2 herniated disks, disk degeneration, and that my vertebrae are rubbing together. The doctor I saw was poking at my back in those spots, and it would either go numb or it would hurt super bad, so I was deemed "unmassageable", if you will, and got a note from her stating that I cannot receive massages anymore.

I took that note to Massage Envy, and about a month later received a call from the manager, who states that I need to pay off another month, and on top of that sign a paper (which in the contract it says NOTHING about this!). Well I haven't gone in to sign it (we're always super busy) and on top of that, since I haven't signed their precious paper, they keep charging me every month! I gave these jerks what they wanted... a freaking doctor's note... I'm just waiting for them to come after me with a lawsuit, stating that I owe them $250-$300...

If you've got half a wit, don't even THINK for a SECOND about signing a contract with them!

Do not go to the Massage Envy in Eden Prairie, MN - I received a call on Sat 5/31 telling me my payment was going through. I informed her that I was not going to renew my membership. She informed me that I will have to complete a form when I come in. I asked her that this will be my last payment correct? She said yes, just come and fill out the form. I just received a call from the office confirming my cancellation notice and my last payment will be this month, June 30th. I completed the form on June 3rd and was told it has to be within 30 days - I explained to him that I was not told that when I specifically asked. All he said is he was sorry. What ###! I will never go back to this place!

BEWARE OF MESSAGE ENVY IN SHORT HILLS, NEW JERSEY. I signed a contract with them on 10/21/10 for 1 year (expiring on 12/21/11) and for the first 4 months tried different therapists because I was unhappy with the quality of service. The messages were not relaxing because they were either too talkative or did not focus on my requested problem areas which is the left side of my body due to working on the computer for 8 to 10 hours a day. Finally, I got a therapist who focused on my request and I was pleased with her service although her assigned room was always cold and the heating mat on the message table was broken for months. After a couple of months I mentioned it to the therapist and she said that she had requested to the management to fix it, but they had done nothing about it. As I was walking out that day I mentioned to the manager that the room was too cold and makes it impossible to relax and enjoy the message. The manager's response was that the rooms are set to a normal temperature so the therapists are comfortable while they are working and that she was not aware of the broken heating pad. I said it had been broken for months and the manager made no comment. I was extremely dissatisfied about customer service from the manager. She was basically unresponsive to my comments. In June 2011, I found out that I might lose my job by the end of the year and my husband also found out in Aug 2011 that he was for sure losing his job. I called Message Envy and told them that due to financial difficulties I would have to cancel my contract. They said that I could not cancel until 12/21/11 and VERY CONVENIENTLY NEVER MENTIONED THAT I HAD TO SIGN A FORM 30DAYS BEFORE THE CANCELLATION DATE OR OTHERWISE THEY WOULD AUTOMATICALLY KEEP CHARGING MY CREDIT CARD. Ok, I continued to go, but never found any improvement in my problem areas (the left side of my back, arm and leg). In late Oct 2011, I went in person to their location in Short Hills to make my last two appointments of my membership (Nov and Dec) and told the girl at the front desk that I was not renewing my membership due to financial difficulties (my husband and I were at this point both unemployed). Her response was...well when you come in for your last appointment in Dec (which is was today Dec 17th) you can fill out the form to cancel. After my massage today I asked the girl at the front desk for the form and she informed me that I was going to be charge for Jan 2012 and I said why, my membership ends this month Dec, she said because you have to sign the form 30 DAYS BEFORE YOUR CANCELLATION DATE OTHERWISE YOU GET CHARGED FOR ANOTHER MONTH. My response was why was I not told about this before when I tired to cancel in Aug 2011 and just in Oct (two month prior) when I said I was not renewing my contract. The girl called the manger out to the front and the manager was very rude and said that this is their policy. I questioned why I was not told in Oct. If I was I would have signed it then. The manager said " I was willing to work you with but since you are getting so upset I will not waive the January charge. I told her that I was going to dispute it on my credit card so she asked me to leave the location because she did not want the other customers to hear what I was saying. I came home and looked up Message Envy main customer service phone # and it does not work. They are located in Arizona. I went back to the location in Short Hills because I realized that they never give me the cancellation form to sign before telling me to leave the location. I went back and the girl at the front desk was smirking at me while I was asking her to call the manager out from the back so I could get the form to sign. I asked for their names and they would not give it to me until another customer came in and only the manager gave me her name. I also wanted the name of the girl who was smirking at me, but they never gave it to me. BEWARE OF WHAT THEY SAID TO YOU, THEIR ONLY CONCERN IS TAKING YOUR MONEY, NOT YOUR HEALTH AND WELL BEING. THEY WILL LEAVE OUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO GET YOUR MONEY.

MASSAGE ENVY IS A RIP OFF! AT A REAL SPA YOU GET HOT TOWELS, AROMATHERAPY OF YOUR CHOICE, CANDLES, A WATERFALL, SHOWERS, AND A ROBE. MASSAGE ENVY OFFERS YOU NONE OF THIS UNLESS YOU PAY EXTRA, AND IF YOU DO PAY EXTRA IT'S NOT WORTH IT BECAUSE IT'S NOT A REAL SPA IT'S A [censor]ING MASSAGE CLINIC. NOTHING LUXURY ABOUT IT. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, AND THEY HIRE ANYBODY WITH A MASSAGE LICENSE. THE FIRST TIME I WENT THEY GAVE ME A THERAPIST WHO JUST GOT FINISHED SMOKING A CIGARETTE, I HAD TO CANCEL THE MASSAGE AFTER THE FIRST 5 MINUTES BECAUSE THE SMELL WAS UNBEARABLE. I ASKED HER HOW MUCH DID THEY GET PAID TO WORK THERE CONSIDERING THAT THE PRICES WERE SO CHEAP, AND SHE TOLD ME 15 DOLLARS FOR EVERY MASSAGE. SHE ALSO TOLD ME THEY DO MASSAGES BACK TO BACK IN A ROW AND THAT SHE'S ALWAYS IN PAIN. SHE SAID SHE WANTED TO TAKE TIME OFF BUT HER MANAGER THREATENS HER WITH TERMINATION. 15 DOLLARS THAT'S A LITTLE RIDICULOUS. I'M DEFINITELY NOT SUPPORTING THAT.

my ex girlfriend works at the altamonte springs location and said the same issues go on regularly with every client. Its a scam to get you frustrated in trying to cancel or get refund. No one will call you back ever. They say they cannot cancel when they can. They tell you they cancel then dont. Its the wait you out game so you will give up. They are franchised but sounds like a corporate game to me. She gave me so many stories especially one where the womans son died and they still did not refund the money. Its hard sell on contracts and they will tell you its easy to cancel but if you dont after 3 days you never will have any luck. they work on commision and they will be fired if they do no thit 15% attach rate. they get 850 and hour plus a tier bonus for 15% and so on according to their memberships. thats why its hard to get out once you sign it. thats why you dont get all the info up front. thats why you shouldnt give your credit card number as you will never be able to get out of the contract. if you move somewhere where there isnt a massage envy within a 25 mile radius you can opt out. and rates arent honored in other areas of the country of what you signed up in. plus if you miss your appointment and dont cancel youre charged. again your credit card will be charged.

Ask for a copy of the agreement it is clearly stated that a 30 written request to canacel is required after the intial term of your aggreement has ended. Point it out to them and demand they honor the terms of the agreement.

This would be the first and last time I visit this center in Miami, FL (Tamiami). I am used to a professional spa and masseuse. I do not feel comfortable having the therapist talk to me about personal details of what is going on in the office neither there personal life outside of work. I find this very unprofessional and the staff needs to get properly trained, educated, or terminated. I will not recommend this place ever.

I have been with Massage Envy for over a year, close to two years. I had to have a surgery, and then my brother passed away, then it was the holidays, then my job changed - anyway I was not able to use my prepaid massages. When it got to the point that I had seven prepaid massages, I went in to cancel my membership. They handed me the form for my signature - but I read the paper which stated that the next months fee would not be taken from my account, but I would LOSE my prepaids. If I stop paying the monthly fee - I become a non-active member and will not be allowed to get the massages that I have already paid for!

Also, after discussing this nonsense with some co-workers, I found out that among the six of us talking, five of us had memberships, but I was the only one paying $59/mon, everyone else was paying $39/mon on their contracts! When I comfronted the manager about this I was told that this was not possible and I must be mistaken - but why would anyone lie about this. When I gave them the names of the others, they verified that a "mistake" had been made on their contracts and would be corrected.

Massage Envy - fraud and scam

I treated myself to a massage at the local Massage Envy because it was close to my house last January. There was another woman who was waiting and while the both of us were checking in, the sales pitch started. The employee said that the membership guaranteed a massage every month, but NEVER said that you couldn't cancel the membership in the first year...

Massage Envy unfair wages

After 18 days of employment I was fired unfairly as the administrative manager of 2 Massage Envy's (owners are Earl and Elaine Brooks) However the Owner did not pay me for 3 days that I worked plus commission( the total amount due to me were $399.00) I not only worked 8hours a day with no supervision from the old manager, I also worked overtime marketing the business. The owners of these 2 Massage Envy pride themselves as Christians but they common thieves.

Wow, I went to the new local massage envy (pensacola fl) and I felt this. I got my $49 massage and was hard sale'd the memebership afterwards. I wondered why all their therapist seemed to be little kids who just graduated massage school. They seemed to be more focused on what paperwork and protocol they were suppose to be doing rather than giving me a good massage. I felt guilty afterwards like I took advantage of my girl. :( After searching a little online I found this and realised that, while I'm in a different state the owners are the same. (as vadnais heights)

There are 2 sides to every story and I know the Brooks' personally. I know they handle all their affairs with the highest level of honesty and integrity. I also know Van performed multiple unethical actions during her short time of employment.

Massage Envy harassment

I was told that there was no long term obligation when I enrolled and that it was month to month. As if that was not enough, I had a heart attack in early 2007 and had bypass surgery. These jerks harassed me in rehab. I told them what had happened, that I was in rehab, and that I could not have massage.

I did not hear from them for almost two years. Now I got a letter from a collection agency asking for $294.00. I have not been in their store since my surgery.

as today 11/15/2023 in CT, Milford office.

I do not have a credit card, so how I would use your service if you not accepting walks in,

Franchise owner of Silverdale WA shop will only allow members to schedule massage 1 time per month. So he can sell more memberships and make more money. So if you need additional sessions consider going someplace else.

I have been a member for years. Since Covid started, I have not been able to book a massage.

As of now I have at least 30 credits that I can't use.

If I can't utilize your services and you are charging me for them, isn't that a little illegal in relation to providing service?

Every time I schedule a facial they call me the day of the appointment to cancel it. This has now happened 4 times. Don't offer the service if you don't have an esthetician to complete the service.

I HAVE CANCELLED MY MEMBERSHIP 6 MONTHS AGO AND HAVE STILL BEEN CHARGED EVERY MONTH! No one is reaching out to me and I am still being charged. This is ridiculous. I have called corporate and left a message and complained here before.

We should be repaid for the months we paid and didn't get massages

I have submitted multiple emails with the required form and to the email addresses provided to me but I am still being charged. I would like to send you the email and text messages for proof. I need the charges to stop and get credit for changes from late Feb 2019 to the recent change in late May.

I signed up for a membership & was told that I could cancel said membership at anytime. I have not yet used the membership & cannot financially afford to pay for it due to financial changes as well as recent family issues. Upon contacting them, I was basically told that I cannot cancel.
