Very poor 🤒
We don't know much about how Food Basics handles customer complaints outside ComplaintsBoard, but what we see here, on our website, is quite disappointing. We think there might be reasons for the company's actions (like not knowing about the complaints), and we would be happy to see them among customer-focused businesses that easily solve customer problems. But until that happens, we ask reviewers to be cautious when dealing with Food Basics and using their services, and to carefully read the experiences of other customers on ComplaintsBoard, because who is warned is armed, you know! 💪

Food Basics Customer service

I went into the food basics on Silvercreek to get a 10 lb bag of onions that were advertised for 1.88 on the app. When I went to pay for it the cashier said that would be $4 and change. I said they are on sale for 1.88 and showed her my phone. She checked her flyer and told me that was not her store flyer. I asked how would I know if it was that store flyer. She told me that I would have to call the store and they would be able to tell me. Sorry my time is limited and I don't have time to call every store in town to make sure it is that store flyer. I asked if she could do a price match she said no. Then asked if I wanted the onions. I said not thanks. She told me that I have to put them back if I did not want them. I told her that is was not my job and left. I am not sure if anyone will see this or care. But my time does not need to be waisted in calling stores up
To see if the flyers Mach with the ones I have. I did go home and checked the paper flyer to the app that I use. And what do you know they did not match. I made sure I had the right date right store. So someone made a Big mistake. I am a little frustrated when things don't match up and stores don't care. My time is limited and everyone else's time is.

Food Basics Gift card

I purchased an LCBO Gift Card from Food Basics for Christmas for my Dad when he went to make a purchase he was informed there was nothing on it. It was for $50.00 it was activated by the cashier. I went back with my receipt for a refund the manager refused to do anything about it. Their customer care did an investigation and said the card had in fact been activated and it must be a faulty GC now I am out $50 this is not acceptable and not satisfying to me at all! I would like something done about this and want my money returned to me!

Food Basics Customer care

My 17 year old son was rollerblading home from work and stopped in to Food Basics which he had done before. He was going slowly in the store to get one thing and check out. He was approached by the manager, Jeff, who indicated no rollerblading. He said take them off or leave. He put back the item and waited for me in the entrance where he was yelled at by Jeff. My son was humiliated and very upset. Yelling at a customer is extremely unprofessional and inexcusable. I went back in with my son, who changed to shoes in my car, and asked him if he yelled at my son. He said "he was wearing rollerblades in the store" as if to justify his actions.
I shop at Food Basics frequently since they opened in Tecumseh for my family of 8 and I'm shocked by this behaviour from a manager. I would appreciate if you looked into the incident.
Sincerely,

Food Basics Unfair service at customer checkouts

I was in line at a food basics store at 2425 truscott. I was first in line. A cashier opened up her checkout and called the guy standing behind me to her cash desk. What happened to first come, first served? Please, teach your inexperienced cashiers that whoever is first in line, should be the first served. We call that fairness.

Food Basics Cashier at customer service desk.

The cashier was very abrupt, tossing our groceries down the conveyer belt, had a totally angry look on her face, while dealing with the elder customer, and with a person who came up to her and asked for change, she told her to wait a min, this was at the customer service desk, the person that asked for change apologized to cashier and to us, as she felt she had held up, cashier did not respond.. She did thank us when giving back change, I said been a long day, she did not answer.. I don't know if she was having a bad day, but its no way to act.. Her ID no is 158.. We will not be going to whatever till she is on anymore. I would have said something to her, but I wasn't feeling well, and just wanted to leave. She has been normally personable.

Food Basics Milk 3.25%

We bought milk from the food basics store at Bayview and John in Thornhill, we brought it home my daughters had a cup and got sick(diarrhea) then they complained about the taste of it and I tried it and it was bad, brought it to store to exchange it on September 24th at 9pm. Store manager, Graig was so rude didn't provide his last name, wasn't willing to help and said he needed the receipt that obviously we didn't know we had to keep it as we didn't know store would sell bad milk to us. I'm very upset as my girls got sick and store staff was rude and didn't do anything about the bad product they sold me.
We are a family of 5 and we spend 800-1000 dollars easily every month from the store but we will not even enter the store from now on because of the behaviour of the store manager at the time whose name is Graig who has zero customer service skill and I don't know how he is working in the field. I will bring this up to the highest level because the health of my children is important to me.

Food Basics Grocery carts

The carts have been "modified" with a little red breaking device which proved to be extremely frustrating and annoying.
I got the cart to my car but literally could not move it to get it out of the way or put it in the cart coral. Independent is a cross the street. Giant tiger a min away. Smiths a high end grocery store 2 mins away. All. Of which I shop for specific reasons..
Get rid of those break devices
The employees are frustrated with ho's decisions to arbitrarily implement them.
I will and do purchase fewer items that I can carry and go to a store where their carts are not a pain in the [censored].

Food Basics Poor customer relations skills

August 8, 2019 8;PM to 9;PM
Had to return to Food Basics once we discovered that we forgot the bleach worth $2.49 cents at the counter, this was aproximately 45 minutes later, upon arrival the bleach was still there, girl cashier and a man acting as store manager refused to give me my bleach unless i drive back home to retrieve reciept from my girl friend, My girl friend was in a hurry and never was given a reciept by the cashier. My family averagely spends well over $700. a month at this store location. We will not be supporting this store anymore, over $2.49 cents, I am a middle aged man, with lots of health concerns, I save my energy for the company I run, the rest of the energy being in physical pain is not going to be wasted chasing $2.49 cents, it;s the principle of the matter that counts, this is how your staff shows me how much my business is appreciated, imagine $2.49 cents verses a mittion dollars worth of bad advertising on Google and loosing my Business for a lifetime. This is lack of common sence on your acting store managers part. [protected] Donald Lafrance feel free to call me anytime, leave a message with my secretary.

When you act like a child and have the grammar and spelling skills of second grader you have no right calling grown women girls. Even a child would know that to prove that you bought the bleach that you would need proof. It is a shame that a small child is smarter than you, but still you call grown women girls. Looks like your girlfriend(one word) was in the wrong. First she left the bleach behind, then she did not have the receipt. Do you really think that your measly $700 a month is going to put them out of business? What about your own principles and owning up to the fact that you are wrong. You lack common sense little boy.

Food Basics Discriminatory harassment

July 11, 2019 afternoon Gerrard Square Mall Food Basics, a plain cloth female without her ID card approached my wife and accused her for shoplifting. English is my wife's second language, she tried her very best to let her know that the products were from Walmart with proof of payment. A man came out from Food Basics joined with his female co-worker asking why my wife raised her voice and demanded an apology then went back to Food Basics without checking the receipt and called mall security.

Food Basics Selling rotten meat, refuse to refund

I have purchased a package of pork loin from food basic on the 12th of January 2019, the package stated that it's best to expire date is 19th of January. when I took it home and opened it, it's rotten. so I decided to take it back to the store on the 13th of January. The store manager refuses to give me a refund or store credit because I didn't bring my credit card. He told me his name is Ahmed. I took a photo of him because I felt like I would like to keep evidence of it, he threatened me that he will call the police.

This is not how your store manager should treat a customer. he should know it's wrong to sell rotten meat to customers.

Food Basics Bad staff

Good Evening.
I want to complain about The Basic Food Staff. I went to buy rice that was on discount with a friend to the store (2019/01/11. at 05:57 pm at cashier number 2). it said you could buy three bags per person. Then I took three and my friend too. Even before getting to the cashier, the cashier shouted at me that it was three per person. I told her it was fine because I was only going to pay three, that the other three bags were for my friend. Then the manager stepped in with a bad attitude without explaining much, he just screamed three per family! and left, then I looked for him and told him we came together but we are not family, he wasn't even able to listen to me, the only thing he kept saying was "three per family!" I said: "you are very mean to me, you should not take that attitude" and he just said: "I am already very polite". what kind of attitude is that? is that the correct way to treat a customer? I am really disappointed with the staff. I just went there to buy something, they think I went there to beg? I know you have your own policy and I respect that. but they were so unrespectful. They should be more carefully with their staff.

Food Basics Lack of available products and general apathy of employees

I am a semi retired professional and live very close to this Food Basics hence, it is a convenient walk just to get out of the house and I generally go 2 - 3 times a week. I have noticed over the last 2 years that at least one item on my shopping list is out of stock every time I go. Whether it is chocolate milk, Nestles Hazelnut coffee cream, Almond milk, Firm Manderin Tofu, Glen Abbey egg buns or what have you, it is always something. Today it was Kellogg's Bran Buds. I always get the flimsiest excuses including Food Basics head office forgot the order, it should be on the next truck - etc. When I ask them if they could check in the back, they either flatly refuse or they walk quickly in, turn around and come back 4 seconds later saying they checked (right!). They are also some of the rudest and least helpful"customer service" people I have ever met. I only go to get some exercise but more and more, I tend to have to get into a car and go elsewhere to a competitor to obtain the items I want. What I do not understand is that my items which are not in stock are obviously more in demand that the other items which are plentiful as nobody wants them. Has food Basics not heard of supply and demand? There is a senior's home right across the street and it must be very inconvenient for them when they cannot get what they need

Food Basics Outdated food

I shop regularly at food basic on merivale road in Ottawa
on numerous occasions I have noticed outdated product on the shelves including most recently bread muffins and el Paso burrito mix. I understand they sell food cheaper than other retailers however it does not justify outdated product. I have also noticed meat that is at its due date as well missing dates on packaged meats. This is not new over the past few years I have seen it getting worse. It has made me more aware of th4 importance of checking dates. I am also doing this for the elderly who may not know any differently as far as fresh produce it is a hit or miss.i have noticed pineapple on the shelf that is cold to to the touch as if it was frozen to give you an example as well fresh vegetables that are on the verge of rot. I have let this go for some time but now I am fed up with throwing things out and is why I am now speaking out. So disappointed and feel cheated and I have lost my trust in this particular store. Staff on floor are not helpfull when I had lodged a concern to them. Bread should not be sitting on a shelfwhen it is days past it's expirary date. I work in a grocery store and can tell you this is not normal practice.ps you should also check into price fixing on bread prices. Sincerely a very disappointed customer.
