Discover Card / cancellation of card

1 United States Review updated:
Contact information:

I am a Canadian Snow Bird who has had a Discover Card for 20 years. Recently I was contacted regarding a check of my Social Insurance number. I do not have a US Social Insurance number, and although I submitted my Canadian SSN Discover decided to cancel my card because they can not verify it. During my initial contact, I was asked to mail proof of my Canadian Social Insurance number along with my Canadian Drivers License - which I did. Today I was told that my card was cancelled.

Due to the patriot act post 9/11 banks are required to verify who they are doing business with which includes getting your social security number, name, address etc. 9/11 was funded by US banks because we did not obtain this kind of information 20 years ago.

@d2688545 Does this mean that a Canadian Snow Bird without US Social Security # can not have an American Credit Card?
