My wife and I booked a weekend round trip flight from San Diego to Portland to visit our son two months in advance of another trip. When we tried to check our reservation we discovered that the travel service had "transposed" our last names with our first! So instead of the ticket reading First name, Middle, Last - It was "booked" as Last name, First, Middle. Essentially the tickets were useless and I immediately called the travel service to correct - more than two weeks in advance of our flights. After many extended "wait" times and speaking to agents I was told to fill out a form (YES IT HAPPENS SO OFTEN THEY HAVE A FORM!) so the "team" would fix it is 3 days, then later 10 days but eventually NEVER! We HAD to fix the tickets at the Airline 3 hours before the flight and that took three trips between TSA and the Airline to get it right. We were LUCKY the airline was right next to the TSA checkpoint otherwise we'd have been struggling to clear TSA and make our flights. Needless to say, the stress was incredible and AARP TRAVEL was of absolutely no help. Once in Portland we found the reservation was finally corrected but only because of the kind Airline ticketing agents whom obviously deal with the issue on a regular basis. The take away from all this is twofold - first DO NOT BOOK THROUGH AARP TRAVEL - for any reason, Second - do not use "non airline" ticket sites ( such as Expedia, Booking.com, Kayak ect. ) because YOU have no recourse to get errors fixed because the "service" purchases the tickets from the airlines SO ONLY the service and fix the tickets! You are last in line and must "wait" for the "service" to fix things and that can be a serious issue if you abroad and have a sudden travel emergency, illness or need. I no longer use the "travel service" sites to BOOK, only to search for pricing. I NOW book directly on the Airline's Site, so I am the customer and I can get service directly from the airline! Save yourself a ton of grief and reason through this process. The airlines don't have to do anything for you when you are NOT the customer! The "travel services" are the customer (as far as the airlines are concerned) when YOU purchase a ticket through them! It's kind of a 3rd party scam and you really don't want to get caught up in a travel nightmare. Like I previously stated, AARP TRAVEL (via Expedia) DID NOTHING despite a dozen calls and promises from Expedia to FIX the name error. AGAIN WHY do they have a dedicated "FORM" for this REASON? ( because it happens that frequently). In closing, I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER book a FLIGHT through AARP TRAVEL, NEVER AGAIN!
Recommendation: NEVER BOOK 3RD PARTY - ONLY DIRECTLY WITH AIRLINES!!!!!!
