In September 2025, TransUnion mailed a letter announcing a data breach. The letter offered post-breach ID protection (www.mytrueidentity) which is worse than nothing. I've tried repeatedly to enroll in their ID protection account and each time, after entering all the requisite data, was referred to a TransUnion phone number. After five days, ten attempts to open the ID protection account, and 15 aborted phone calls (I never got connected to an agent) -- one of which connected to a foreign call center, where I could hear conversations (foreign language, possibly Hindi or Urdu) but could not get anyone to hear me, I've had it with TransUnion. I've had repeated problems accessing the TransUnion website for the past three years, but now I can't even take advantage of their post-breach offer of ID protection (Their breach. My protection.) TransUnion pales in comparison to Experian and Equifax. (I have credit freezes on all three, since the Equifax breach a couple of years ago (which Equifax handled brilliantly) but have never been confident that TransUnion is protecting me.)
Recommendation: If you're issuing credit, avoid TransUnion if at all possible -- unreliable and extremely difficult to access. If you're an average person, just trying to protect your financial well-being. Be sure your Equifax and Experian files are good, so creditors will have at least two reliable sources for credit checks.
