My husband went into a Subway restaurant tonight. We were waited on by a young girl. After she started to fix our sandwich she started to sneeze. She turned away from the bread and then excused herself so she could go to the back. She probably washed her hands and changed her gloves. This is not a complaint about the girl. After she went to the back a man came over and asked what I wanted on the sandwich. I politly asked him if he would please make my sandwich on another loaf of bread. I told him that I was sorry to be so much trouble but I didn't want to catch a cold. He jerked the loaf of bread up and threw it away. Then he bent over and got another loaf. Then he actually threw the empty tray up top. He threw it so hard that it made a loud sound. I told him again that I was sorry to ask for another loaf of bread. He rudly asked me what I wanted on the sandwich. I told him that it was ok and my husband and I just walked out and went somewhere else. We have never been treated so rude in a restaurant! There was no reason for the man to be so rude! The restaurant wasn't busy at all. Like I stated before, the young girl was not at fault. The older man was the one who was so rude! The time we were in the Subway was around 7:15 to 7:30 on May 27. We love to eat at the Subways and usually eat there several times a week. I think the company needs to know about this incident.
Thank you very much.

I would like to make a complaint about the customers. Firstly when you are ordering please listen to our questions. When we ask what bread would you like we don't want to hear yes. What cheese would you like, yes. These answers do not make sense. Secondly order all subs at the start and not when you get to the till then say i want another one. This will hold up the queue for other customers who know what they want. Finally for now. As you can see we are busy with limited staff per shop. We don't want to have too clean sauce of every table after every customer or have to close the door after every customer that will then see you close it but come in and leave it open.

My sister was in the other night getting dinner and was treated so rudely that we will never go back to this subway branch EVER again! Before she even got to the counter, the young man working there grunted and asked her 4 times what bread she wanted and what cheese, while mumbling under his breath that he just wanted to go home...this was at 8:45 and they close at 11. He then ripped the cheese and turkey into little pieces while throwing them on the bread. When asked what she wanted on the sandwich she would say "lettuce" and he would say "is that it?" then she would say "tomato" and he would say "is that it" over and over after everything she said. We are huge supporters of the chain and eat there several times a week. We have 2 businesses in this town and have a lot of ties to our community. If any of our employees ever treated any one like this young man did, he would not be our employee anymore! The girl working with him that night, when asked what the managers name was, thought about it and said Matt, then said he'd be in early in the morning. The manager name, we found out, is Chris. He actually didn't arrive til afternoon that day. He was really nice and seemed like he would discipline this guy, I have no complaints about anyone else in the shop. The girl should't have given us the wrong name for the manager, that seemed shady, like it happened a lot and they were getting away with being rude to people. The rude guy heard this and said "drive carefully" in a menacing tone as she walked out. This jerk also told her there were 4 other Subways in town, and maybe she should go to one of them. I don't know if they're all owned by the same person in this town, but if he's sending away business, that can't be good for anyone! Next time we'll save ourselves the embarrassment and trouble and call Jimmy Johns!

I disagree with atlanta_boy about the sneezing one. The way the customer described is this employee sneezed away from it and in the air not in her sleeve or collar. You ever heard of over spray before?

I find it funny that you are complaining about someone sneezing away from your food (you say thats not the problem) and a person who is rude to you when you ask for another bread so as not to catch a "cold". I want to ask you if you know what is happening to your food when you go to say a burger king, wendy's, or any other quick serve restaurant where you can't see how your food is prepared? Who knows what could be happening then. Do you complain then? You don't because you dont know what actually happened to your food, if anything at all. I'm sure hundreds of people have coughed, sneezed, and done worse to your food and you ate it without even knowing and likely without catching a cold. With regards to catching a cold, from someone sneezing, I don't see how that could happen. I have not seen any studies where someone has caught a cold in the manner that you describe. I agree with you that it is appropriate to wash your hands, change gloves when a person has to cough or sneeze, but if a person doesn't actually sneeze on your food but in their sleeve or away from you food, then it should be ok to eat and for you to request another bread is overkill.

Yesterday I was at Subway at Niskie Center St. Thomas. I am really interested in lodging a complaint to someone in authority who can do something about my incident. I was ordering breakfast at this Subway and the man was making the omlets in a dirty frying pan. It was blackened with residue which stained the yellow omlet. The spatula was equally dirty. I have been to many subways in my life, but I had never seen a frying pan like that. They normally look brand new. The employee then took brown paper towels are rubbed the frying pan and rinsed it with water. When he proceeded to cook the eggs the frying pan was still visibly filthy. To make matters worse he didn't even change his gloves when he resumed cooking. I had asked for ham in my omlet and he took the same dirty gloves and grabbed the ham and then used a small knife to chop up the ham. I almost threw up. This is not normal and should not be acceptable. Where can I file an official complaint?

I totally agree with you about there being no reason for being rude towards customers when there's no conflict to begin with. But I have to tell you, it's quite possible that the employee you've encountered may just have been frustrated about something and he may not have meant to act towards you and your husband that way on purpose. So next time if any of you encounter this situation when going to a subway restaurant, then I would recommend that you do what you did on this post... Simply just politely say something, and try to get out of their as soon as possible without making a scene like what this employee was trying to do. Anyways, hope that helps. :)

The niche that subway has, is that they create your sub the way you like it, using quality ingredients freshly baked bread and attempt to offer courteous and respectful service.

Having said that there really is a misconception of what a Subway restaurant really is, while it is legally categorized as a restaurant it is far from it.

Like the food chains prior to it, it is a fast food locale.

They offer a variety in their menu witch revolves around sandwiches, they also offer some other choices such as drinks, chips and deserts like the freshly made cookies you find at all their locations.

But unlike any other Food chain franchise, when you enter and place your order the general public has this misleading belief that they can dictate the amount of each ingredient and not pay for it,

Example so I am not miss-understood.

You go to McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Apple bees name any fast food type you want does not matter and say you order a burger, you can ask for extra cheese, for no pickles, extra mayo and so on, but you can't ask for can I have 3 pickles instead of 2, can I have a lot of pickles like cover the entire sandwich with them.

For each of those franchises I just mentioned they all have a standard amount of what is extra, and what is normal portion, at Subway however the customer tends to want to dictate the actual amount of each ingredient and when the correct amount according to what they had in their heads is not given they get upset.

Another thing is that unlike the preferred service that is given to subway customers that are unlike any other fast food franchise all of this is done at the customer's inspection, you see what you are getting made right in front of you and the person making your food is also the same person taking your order.

Customer's want cleanliness, I have had customers that wanted me to stop and put a fresh set of gloves on because I made some one else’s sandwich, not because I touched money, not because I touched any part of my body like my hair for example, just simply because I used those gloves to make a sandwich prior to theirs and while there may even be people that will say “WOW YOU had to put fresh gloves on come on that no a big deal”, it wouldn’t be if we were talking about a couple of customers but since where talking about 200-600 subs per shift for one employee that’s a different story.

As you might imagine at any given subway we have a limited amount bread since each subway bakes their own bread daily, when you place your order for your sandwich it's defeating when the customer changes their mind after the bread has been handled and cut, this bread can no longer be used because it has a shelf life, like other ingredients and removing it from the holding bin and cutting it open removes half the shelf life of that loaf.

And while I agree that if someone sneezed on my bread I too would want it changed, this person turned away from the bread when they sneezed, if you think changing your bread will keep you from catching a potential cold your being naive, for that kind of thinking you should have also requested that their entire front line of products be changed and the front line washed down.

Again all of these things that I have mentioned are preformed but hourly employees, the customer does not tip for their service, yet the customer is handled individually, the customer directly interacts with their cooks, yet will complain because ESP was not working properly, and the customer expects full line service as they would receive in a five star restaurants, while standing in a line in front of a sneeze guard.

And last be certainly not least there are many customers that believe in the motto "The Customer is always right", being always right does not preclude the right of the employee to be treated with decency and respect, if you enter a local restaurant and expect to treat the people there with disrespect or as if they are beneath you, than you can most likely expect the same treatment on the way out, while most employees will treat their customers with respect and attempt to fill their wishes, it is a far gone conclusion that every dog has their day and it would only be natural if the dog gets abused enough they will bite back.

Too bad for you guys. Our Subway is fabulous! Clean, nice and great employees. It's the manager's fault if things go otherwise. I live in the South though, where people are more careful about health concerns for customers, I guess.

I would have walked out too.

If your meatballs are burned, tell them. If your bread is hard, did you have it toasted? If there is hair in the food, tell them. They won't bite. Why do you eat there if that's what happened to you?

Each Subway is franchised by someone. Some franchise 3 to 5. Ask for the franchise owner's name and number. They have it. Call the owner. Tell them what's going on. It will stop immediately.

I loooove my Subway!

I advise you not to eat at this restaurant. Employees are rude and lazy. Hair found in food, meatballs were burnt and bread was very hard. Employees are very unprofessional. Watch out for the hair in your food.
