SMS.com Business practices

On 06/02/2023 a man showed up at my office claiming to have an appointment with my boss (I found out later he didn’t). He said he works for SMS-NA and explained how they provide business analysis to small companies. He was here for several hours and was persistent about scheduling a $1300 2-day consultation with me. I eventually agreed, but felt uneasy about it all weekend.

Later that day I did some research on the company and saw they had tons of negative reviews, so I decided to cancel. The number I was given wasn’t accepting calls. I looked up the website and called the main line, it just rang and rang, no answering service or machine. I tried to find an email for anyone at SMS-NA, but there was nothing available.

At 6:45am on 06/05/2023, the analyst showed up and my boss explained that we wanted to cancel. The man refused to leave. For 30 minutes my boss had to repeatedly ask and then demand him to leave his shop.

The analyst then began saying he had a s**tty shop, and questioned why he would let a female (me) make his business decisions. It got to the point that my boss got up to physically remove him from the office, and only then did the analyst start to head for the exit.

Unfortunately he didn’t leave, and continued to make disparaging comments about me personally (I’ve never met him), my boss and his company. Finally my boss threatened to contact the police and he finally left. He did tell my boss that he was going to wait for me to come in and have some words with me alone.

We have video of this interaction that I will be happy to provide if requested.

Desired outcome: 1. An apology. 2. After the apology, confirmation that we will never be contacted by this company or any representative of this company again.

SMS.com Scam!!

Sms is a scam. . . Do not believe what they say! A senior area manager met with me about 30 minutes ago and attempted to explain what type of service their company provides. Nothing made any sense. He was offering for an analyst to fly out from chicago and meet with my husband and myself for free, after which he would sit down and examine our books for two days for free, and provide us with a "report" of where and what we are "lacking" for free. He further explained that unless we were completely satisfied with the service and found it beneficial, we did not have to pay. All this for free! Obviously, this sounded a little too good to be true.

I explained to him that because my husband was unable to meet with us, i would have to discuss this with him before making any decisions. This guys from sms asks "cant we move forward right now? I have an analyst who is in the area actually and because we wouldnt have to arrange for his airfare, i could drop your price to $500". . . Wait. . . I thought this was free? I smile, thank the guy and try to send him away. He hands me a card, writes his cell phone number on it and walks away. So i immediately google sms and try to find reviews. Thank god i came across this page.

I immediately look at his card and call the telephone number provided. Not to my suprise. . . Number does not work. I call his cell phone number. . . He picks up. I explain to him that i spoke to my husband (Which i havent) and we are not interested. He asks "wow. . . Really. . May i ask why?" i wanted to tell him about the reviews i read and that im not interested in companies that are nothing but a scam, but i politely said "we are not ready for something like this. " so he says "as a business owner you need to rethink what you're doing" (Was this a threatt? An insult? Im not sure, nor do i care) . I want this company out of my hair.

Do not fall for their horrible sales pitches. . . Scam!

I agree with the unsatisfactory the employees are even rude on the work field. In Illinois they have a problem with communicating with each other the proper way. Completely out of character and bad for clientele.

This sounds exactly like a "management company that came to our business years ago called George S May. They operate the same way. Then you get hit with the bill from hell! They lead you to believe they have all the answers you need then comes the BS and push for the consultant to come work directly with you at your business. Not free you pay their room and board and meals and time at your business and get nothing for the money or the time you could have asked your CPA the same questions and gotten more information. I could go on for hours. We were told the same that there would be no charge if you were not happy with what they gave you. They gave us NOTHING except less money in our bank account. And then I had to threaten them with the police to get them to leave. I was told I could not "fire" them because I did not hire them. So my husband came back and showed them the door. Was a nightmare!

SMS.com Beware!

I had a guy in yesterday to try to schedule a consultant to "increase my sales and profits". Sounded very much like a firm i hired years ago, but couldn't remember their name. Got very suspicious when he told me sms was in business only 2 years, but had all this experience helping businesses. When i got his business card, it had very little information on it. Although he said he lives and works in my city, his phone number had a "foreign" area code and there was no email information on it to contact him.

What really got me was the address on the card. "why did buffalo grove, il ring a bell", i thought. After he left i did some searching on google, and found complaints about the company, and there it was: ipa, the company that ripped me off years ago. Very clever; change the name of the company so you can rip people off again! I called the guy's number on his card to tell him not to call back. I got what sounded like a call center, who forwarded me to someone else, who said the rep was not available, and that he'd have him call me back. Then "click". He hung up on me. Didn't take my name or number.

Just like most people on this post have said, stay away from these guys! Btw, i've grown my business exponentially without these so - called "consultants".

I had a woman in Dallas named Lori come and meet with me yesterday; I was cordial and let her do her spiel. At the end of the 1 hour talk, I told her I would carve some time out on Thursday to meet with Troy of SMS. Well, needless to say, the very next day, which is Wednesday (today) another woman came in from SMS and said that she was sent here instead of Troy because he had other appointments and could not make it. I told her I was expecting a Troy on Thursday and NOT today. She didn't like the idea of me turning her away and I actually felt kind of bad so I gave her some of my time. I gave her 45 minutes of my time that put me behind my daily tasks at my business. When I pointed to my watch and told her she only had 5 minutes to wrap it up, she gave me a look that could have shot daggers through her eyeglasses. She said "Do you want me to help you with your business and make it grow?" That right there was a dead giveaway. She was pushy as hell and I felt like she needed to leave. I told her leave or I would call the police. I guess the b-i-t-c-h didn't think I would do it because she stayed seated, so my secretary called the cops on her. Once my secretary gave the address to our shop, she got up and left. She threatened me with collecting her payment and I told her to get lost and she wouldn't collect squat from me. Beware because these people are very pushy and don't follow your instructions. They are a group of con artists who promise to NOT COLLECT any fees up front and only want a free consultation with you to go over your business strategy. I got a call not long after she left (about 15 mins) and it was her boss telling me I spoke to him yesterday and that today was the day for the consult; I told him "nope" and that it was set for Thursday. He became angry that I turned his colleague away and that I knew they had lawsuits pending in Illinois for fraud. I told him that if any one of their people contact me again, I would become a party to the class action against them. I hung up so let's hope they drop off the face of the planet.

Oh lord had yet another one came to us with the "Free" consultation. Two day later I was able to get her out the door. Finally she admitted that if she could look at our taxes and save us at least $25000.00 wouldn't it be worth it for us to pay her company $15000.00. There is no way that I would ever give my personal information to any company that called me and said they needed it for whatever reason! Really I have no idea where or to who that info goes. I guess these companies are hard up to get money from some where. It won't be from us. The entire conversation went basically that my CPA doesn't know anything and my lawyer is an idiot. Because they have not advised me correctly and are costing me money. Yea sure that is why I get all information about current and coming tax breaks. Apparently we have stayed in business for over 37 years and do not know anything at all! Do you suppose I don't have to use deception to get customers and lie to them to get their money? Geez people get a clue high pressure and fast talking using practice of calling anyone that you trust an idiot is usually someone that is desperate to get their hands on your money. And guess what you won't get what you thought you would. However they will get what they were after YOUR MONEY and lots of it! And you know what if you work for these companies would we expect you to do anything but try to cover these practices... come on not all of us are as stupid as you would like to think.

End of our "meeting" went like this... so are you going to let me look at your taxes? I reply I will talk to (owner) and let you know tomorrow. She insisted I give her an answer right now! BIG MISTAKE! So I gave her my answer NO! She pushed some more. I said do you not understand what NO means? She stated I didn't have any chance of making a sale here did I? I told her not a snowballs chance! Not my first time at this rodeo either! These tactics are so old and worn out why are people still falling for them?

Not scam - not fraud! Did any one of these commentator ever say the did not agree to move forward? No! So enough said. They agreed. . . Would you believe a business owner or anyone that agreed used your product then changes their mind and did not want to pay your company for services you rendered?
[redacted] is the scam - here is the real truth: http: / / youtu. Be / mhacf1fykne

I have had nothing but praise since they are truly excellent in the real time information that save a $40k tax bill due and turn it into pennies on the dollar. Gave real time information tools and systems. Also they put together a marketing plan that is working and increasing sales and it did not cost much. But it working and i would advise you not to listen to all this non - sense but make a informed decision with real information and not rhetoric and non - sense. This a our livelihood business and they have some solution look at it. It does not cost you to look. You make your own decision just like when you started the business you are in. I am sure you had many of people tell you it would not work, or that it would fail, etc. However no one can estimate, faith, drive, & determination of one's heart. Get the survey and have the anaylst to come out then judge for your self. Don't let all of these yeah - hews, negative people stop you from trying a no risk obligation real world assessment of your business. It was eye opening to me to know some of the areas in which i was failing and which areas i was succeeding. Get it done. As all of you small businesses know is that information is power and the lack there of could result in mistakes or even worst failure. It tough out here to make it an anything that can help i am all for looking into. Do be swayed until you have more information then relying on some internet naysayers and disgruntled employees. Bible - kjv 2 timothy 2:15 study to show yourself approved to god, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Niv 2 timothy 2
An unashamed workman

14remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of god not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15be diligent to present yourself approved to god as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 16but avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are hymenaeus and philetus, 18men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some. 19nevertheless, the firm foundation of god stands, having this seal;the lord knows those who are his, and, ;everyone who names the name of the lord is to abstain from wickedness. , here is the real truth: http: / / youtu. SMS.com sms, roi-na, ipa, abs, gps are all a scam

SMS offers a complete business analysis compiled with a one day study on your business and it takes 45 minutes or so to talk to them and that's it. SMS is known to increase profits. Better known for giving an analysis on their own merit, hoping that you will hire them and pay for their services should you feel you need them. I own a contracting company in Arizona and just in the first 15 minutes I knew the analyst had an eye for my business and much experience.
There is no catch. Instead of sending someone by to try and sell you, they basically give you a free analysis (done on their time and their own money) that shows you how to increase profits not modify your operations. If you don't see benefit in the analysis you don't have to pay or ever talk to them again.
I didn't pay for the analysis because the first few things I learned from the analyst in our focus meeting before the analysis opened my eyes to a few things and honestly, I make cabinets. 80% of my business is operational and 20% is financial. These guys study many businesses every week and they are proven to increase profits. I have never seen a company do this kind of work and put so much money up front to try and impress and they did.
No development/resource firm gives you a no obligation benefit. I was very wary of who they were. I figured out they have 3 different divisions and that there were a few issues they ran into in the past, but since I am open minded and looking for way to improve constantly (even though i make money every year) I gave it a shot and learned a few very good things about the business side I didn't understand. I guess it's true, you can't teach a guy how to make cabinets (been doing it for 40 years) but you can teach him how to run a business (which I always hated doing but I love making my cabinets and seeing people happy). After a month I am going to try and get some tax work done from them to educated my CPA (who is just a compliance officer).

Love SMS and I would recommend them to anyone.

Everyone has issues with the other firms out there but I honestly didn't see a drawback and they have a database of where I'm actually saving around 34, 000 a months by using other venders for my glue and nails. Very much knowledge contained there. If you have any questions they will answer them in the meeting and make sure you ask A LOT of questions. Good firm especially for their Tax division which helped my CPA tremendously.

What is so unbelievable about IPA is that after cheating me and my ailing business out of what little assets we had 10 years ago that they would dare return as SMS and attempt the same scam. It had such a familiar ring that when I finally got the guy moving toward the door and he gave me his business card with the Buffalo Grove I laughed out loud. When pressed, the "Senior Area Manager" said his company had bought out IPA. It was all I could do to not grab the guy by the lapels and throw him down the stairs. SMS...run away, run away!

These people are just con artists. Read the inc magazine article "Im John Burgess and I am here to help". What SMS does is come to your business and sell you fake business consulting. I say fake because the information they sell you can be had for free off many financial websites. Calculations like inventory turnover and how much your advertising expense is as a percentage of sales. They will come up with garbage like "Well increase your advertising and your sales will go up." That's the revelation they will sell you. And how do they get paid? In my town what they did was get business owners to post date checks. They tell you the checks cant be cashed because they are post dated. That's a lie. They want to see your bank accounts so they can figure out how much they can steal from you. They simply cash the post dated checks right away. There is story after story about this on the internet. They came to my business and I just played along. I am a CPA and quite familiar with financial statements and tax returns. I played dumb while the SMS (at that time International profit associates) consultant pulled out general financial analysis sheets you can get most anywhere on the internet and tried to sell them to me as "high level" financial analysis. It was just comical. He asked me questions like "Do you know what your inventory turnover is?" expecting me to say of course no. At that point I opened my desk drawer and pulled out my sheet that I do each month showing various financial ratios including my inventory turnover that I tracked. The guys face turned white. He asked for my tax returns. I refused saying that was private. He asked for my financials. I refused saying that's private. He asked for my bank statements. I said why so you can see if I am a good target? Finally exasperated (Isnt it fun when the guy ripping you off is the one that gets upset?) he said in an angry tone "How am I supposed to help you if you wont show me anything? I said that's your problem. He produced a sheet he wanted me to sign. He said it was to show SMS he was at my business and doing his job. The problem is right above my signature there was very small print that said I agreed to pay SMS a $150 dollar consulting fee for his time. I ripped it up and told him to get out. They now call me probably every couple months and I just received my quarterly call from some bozo down at SMS. Even though I tell him I am not interested and have talked to other small business people in my community who have been ripped off, he wont get off the line. Not until I tell him I am prepared to waste all day with him, then he hangs up on me. What they do is what any qualified bookkeeper (I wont even say CPA) can do for your business or you yourself if you just want to take a little time to do some research on the internet. They stay in business because they have learned how to just stay inside the technicalities of the law. They sell you a worthless financial product and you get an expensive lesson. Stay away.

I have listened to their pitch a couple of times - it is hard sell and to me pure BS. I have repeatedly asked for specific references, but these are "confidential" and not available. This last rep used the "you are questioning my integrity" and "you are calling me a liar" defense to try and make me feel bad.

I am so bummed. I met with a guy from SMS today and thought I found a badly needed lifeboat for my struggling business. He was very nice and understanding and seemed to have a great business background. And I could really use the help that it seemed SMS could offer. No choice but to cancel the appointment with the business analyst. Can't afford to lose anymore money.

I used a consultant after a recommendation by an Account Executive from GPS. The business consultant was exactly what I needed for my continued company growth. To me, the business consultant was like an "app" for company improvement. They see room for improvement, oh, they have an app for that!

Business consultants offer constructive criticism. Not everyone is prepared to take it, especially if they are in a bad position with their company.

Maybe I am an exception to the rule, but I had to speak up after reading all the negative commentary.

I will not be taking advantage of your hhonors for the simple fact that i stayed there when i was up for a class at the college and the first night there they had a fire in the kitchen that really smoked up the halls and a lot of the rooms also. I waited outside for a long time to put my name on a list and then i told the person i was going to try and find a room at another motel because i needed to get some sleep and she marked it down on her list. When i got my card statement you guys had charged me for the full stay when i wasn’t there and the gal the night of the fire took down that i would be leaving! I under stand that fires happen and it was no problem, but i did feel that it all could of been handled a little bit differently! I never heard a word from you guys and i guess you was hoping that i wouldn’t have noticed the charge to my credit card! I didn’t blame you for the fire ~ things happen and you do have nice rooms plus i had even got a price quote for the convention center because my daughter is getting married next summer and we would of also booked about 30 rooms for guest because i did think it was a nice place, but after i got charged for the room that i hadn’t slept in and you all didn’t even recognize the inconvenience to people ~ i changed my mind totally on everything! So please take me off of any mailing that you might have because when i come up to visit my daughter or classes at the college ~ i’ll find else where to stay!

I never thought much about the fire after i got home until i got the bill and then i thought a lot about it and thought that it would have been nice for you to send out a little note to show the people you was sorry for the inconvenience in the middle of the night! That’s what a business would of done that wasn’t just concerned about the almighty dollar!

Thanks, s. M. Stanhope

I am receiving these type of messages often in my Airtel mobile.
It comes from an unknown number which has a text like BA-AWARD.
The message is: You are awarded 365, 000, 00 GBP in the on going Coca-Cola Promo UK. Contact Dr. Kelly Johnson. kellyjohnson10@hotmail.com
This can be traced out with the help of the operator (in my case Airtel).
But how to complain and whom to complain?
