Public Storage allowed theft of entire unit and now demands payment for empty space
My name is Vitalii Klimenko. I rented storage unit #316 at Public Storage located at 5217 Indian Trail Fairview Rd, Indian Trail, NC 28079.
On June 26, 2025, I was informed that my unit had been broken into. All my valuable property was stolen, including electronics, cameras, laptops, tools, motorcycle gear, and personal items. I filed a police report the same day, and the on-site manager confirmed the theft.
Despite knowing my unit is completely empty after the theft, Public Storage sent me a “Notice of Owner’s Intention to Satisfy Lien,” threatening to auction my unit on July 24, 2025, and hold me responsible for any unpaid balance if the auction does not cover it. They are effectively attempting to auction an empty unit and bill me for the difference.
Additionally, the manager told me I could only seek compensation if I paid the outstanding balance and signed a waiver releasing Public Storage from all liability. This is coercive, unethical, and predatory behavior.
I have filed complaints with:
✅ BBB
✅ North Carolina Attorney General
✅ FTC
I will continue to fight for justice, as Public Storage should be held responsible for the theft that occurred under their care, rather than forcing victims to pay for their own losses.
⚠️ Beware if you consider storing anything valuable with this company. There are numerous similar reports of thefts happening in Public Storage facilities nationwide.
