Over the last 9-12 months I have had
continuing discussions wth the general manager of the Newmarket gym concerning the increasing
occasions of over the top, mindless crashing of weights. Other than advising me to report the
the incidents to the attendants at the front he has made no other obvious attempts to to alter the obvious culture issue.
One month ago I was working diligently on a machine facing the wall. A super stud working behind me dropped ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE pounds from a height of three feet . The ensuing crash startled me and I injured my back.
An incident report was filed by a personal trainer who had been listening to the crashing around previously and, he had not done nor said anything to the individual. The incident report followed because I approached the super stud to advise him he caused me to have been injured. To his credit the individual did seem apologetic. After again talking to the general manager about the incident report nothing happened. There were no proactive measures that were visible to be seen.
Another example of culture occurred as I was was working beside a trainer. The trainer whipped the trainee to the point where he could no longer control the weights and they made a huge crash two feet away to my side. I then immediately suggested to the trainer that this would be a teachable moment to help the trainee learn to control the weights. He replied that “this is how we teach people to work to 110 percent of their capabilities”. No mention whatsoever of danger or distraction of crashing weights.
Another time I asked a super stud why it was necessary to continuously crash the 200 pound weights every single time? His answer was “ that is what a good workout sounds like”.
Today I reported an individual to the attendant at the front (Chris) who was aware of this individual and noted it was a common occurrence. He did report it to the general manager immediately…. Who did nothing that I was aware of . The tragic part for me was watching the horrified, terrified faces of the middle aged women working out near him. Pure and absolute disgust. And, it is very common for this individual to put a towel on one piece of equipment, a water bottle on another and work on a third, with nasty looks and comments to anyone daring to touch any of the three pieces he is working on.
Today, leaving at 4:45 the crashing was shaking the floors and the walls as I was leaving. I casually asked the 3-4 trainers and the general manager sitting around the table if they were feeling or hearing the crashing? No response.
This is obviously a culture issue with Goodlife as is evident by the complaints online. Also it is being done by a very small number of your clients. Believe me the other 99 percent are pissed off with the noise and the inherent danger .
I would suggest Goodlife send out an anonymous questionnaire to get feedback on this issue.
It would also not surprise me that some person, injured by obvious Goodlife negligence with this issue would seek litigation in the courts .
Please do something to protect great majority of your clients who are suffering everyday from this issue.

Desired outcome: Actual leadership is needed to provide a safe workplace

The gym at 5:30-5:45 was absolutely rammed with people
waiting for machines.
One of the usual culprits was using THREE machines. He had
his bag draped over one machine while working on another
and was sprinting to a third while leaving his towel on the second
machine. One person waiting in line suggested to me that he
throw the bag in the garbage. I said no, they want us to report this
to the attendant up front, which I did. MOST people stand in line
in fear of this individual and wait for him to finish,,,
The attendant came over and explained to him that he could not
occupy three stations, to which he replied and I quote "people can
request the use of "MY" machines and I will allow them to us it".
I went home again and reread Goodlife Standare Policies and can't
believe you condone this continual behavior.
This is the second week in a row that I have written to you about
this individual and have not seen any change in his behaviour.

They did not condone this behavior. The attendant even told him he could not occupy three machines. Also, if you did not speak up, maybe you should take mommy to the gym with you. You simply could have spoken up and he would have let you use one of "his" machines. If you cannot have mommy do it for you.
