I purchase my home from M/I homes 6/2006 with the hopes that this would be my last home. To start off I was advised to go through M/I homes for my mortgage, they would give me a point off on my interest rate. Just for history I had a home in California for 10 years & never had an interest rate like the one given to me by M/I (11.4%). Prior to moving into the home I was advised that a window in the great room was cracked, which I advised M/I several times so that it could be replaced, but never had anyone come out to replace it. Later I was informed that the company that they used to install the windows no longer worked for M/I. So needless to say 4 years later the window is still cracked & M/I has not made any effort to correct the problem. I was informed during my walk through when I questioned why the floor in the master bedroom creeked so bad that once I got my furniture in there that it would settle (still creeks). We recently had hard rains & in the master bathroom the window now has bubbling of the window where the water came through & has now ruined the drywall. I have also had Airtrone technicians out to my house now 10 times in the past 4 years for repairs to an air conditioning unit & last night I had a technician come out to tell me that the air conditioners "coil" that was replaced 4/09 was bad & that I could either pay $1, 700.00 to replace it or consider having another unit installed. I am so finished with the problems that I have had with M/I homes & their contractors that if I did not have $50, 000.00 invested in the home I would walk away from it. But I refuse for them to force me from my investment. I would love to find an attorney that would sue each & everyone involved in the with the manufacturing of this home. I will be one of the people that tell each & everyone that I come in contact with that M/I homes is one of the "worst" home builders & to avoid them at all cost. I would never purchase anything that they had a hand in building.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.

I have had several issues with the poor construction and possible ill-fated design/engineering of our home. One issue has kept the ongoing problem of cracks and separation in the stairwell area and other drywall issues. There are a great percentage of areas that surround the chronic cornerbead separation and cracking. We have had the same or adjacent areas repaired 4 times. I have to question construction techniques and quality control monitoring as I predict this to be an everlasting problem. I have been told that this is a result of wood drying or adjusting. Does it take 5 years for a new house to dry out or adjust?
With a new structure, a heating/cooling system should regulate rooms at a reasonable constant temperature with little variance between rooms. I have been told the reason the upstairs is up to 15 degrees warmer, is because I need to regulate the heating and cooling by closing and opening vents and returns. After trying this, our rooms’ temperatures still vary a lot. The only way I have found to regulate consistency is to run the furnace fan 24 hours a day. This should be unacceptable for a new home. I previously owned 2 other homes built in the 60’s and 70’s. This was not necessary with those older homes.
I have had to pull out bent nails that were painted over. It seems that the person putting in the nail should have pulled it out; or the person painting could have pulled it out; but they remained.
Our concrete patio is out of square with our fence. It is hard to tell which is at fault; the fence or the slab.
We had problems with the siding buckling in spots that took M/I several visits to correct.
Construction techniques that M/I uses require using the concrete block foundation to fasten forms and supports for their concrete forms. This scars the outside, cheapens the appearance but saves cost and time for the builder.
Our concrete porch slab is stained, cracked, and flaking or chipping. According to M/I’s representative, the owner not sealing the concrete properly caused this chipping issue. Was not the house finished before the owner moved in? What else did the owner neglect to finish before moving in? Another M/I representative told me that this could have been repaired if I had not sealed it. These statements are contradicting.
Parking vehicles in garages require skill and manipulation for such a tight squeeze. I often wonder if the driveway and/or the garage entrances are allowing any more than the absolutely bare minimum area to park. The alleyways in back of these homes have such a little turning radius that observations can see that some vehicles cannot make the turn and tear up lawns trying to make the corner.
If I had to do it all over again, M/I Homes would never be a consideration.
