Hotels.comrefund policy

I booked some hotels but cancelled them. I called and was told I could not get my money back for 3-5 days even tho I explained that I was visiting a different state and did not have any money because of them holding it and needed them to provide me my money back for me to get another hotel. I was denied due to policy now I'm wondering how you feel about leaving family homeless and hungry on a vacation gone wrong. I need someone to call me on this.
