FISGlobal.com / Certegy approvals and denials

I was told by a Certegy Supervisor that their Check verification service was one of the best in the world. That very day Certegy Check Verification Service issued our business an approval Number for a check written by a man who has been in jail and Prosecuted several times for writing bad checks and also issued an approval number on a check written on an account and bank that has been closed for over 4 years. I would think if this system was one of the best in the world that it would be linked somehow to bad check writers and certainly have a database that recognizes closed banks and accounts. I was told that the approval process is based solely on the history of the check writer with Certegy. After reading the complaints of people with absolutely no bad history having their checks denied by Certegy and then the people with horrible historys having their checks approved, WOW! I think that One of the best systems in the world has a glitch! This is a problem !

FISGlobal.com / Certegy violation of fact act, fair credit reporting act

I wrote a $351.00 check to Toys R Us on October 26, 2008. The check was declined by Certegy. The clerk at Toys R Us called the company and told me they had indicated the check had been declined because I had written too many checks on the account. I informed the manager that I unlimited check writing ability on the account and had only written one check on the account in the last month, something was wrong. I called Certegy at the store and was told that they couldn't tell me why I was declined. I wanted to know what it was so that I could fix it if there was an error. In violation of the FACT Act they informed me that they could not tell me what my file had on it that was flagged. As the branch manager of a community bank, familiar with the FACT act this angered me. I told them this was against the law. They continued to give me a huge run around and I recommended that they get their information straight because they were asking for a lawsuit. Furthermore, I wanted to ensure that other bank customers were not having similar problems. I have read some information now about how many other people are encountering similar problems and I do hope that Certegy faces a class action lawsuit. There is no excuse for breaking the law.

Certegy declines to accept my retirment checks drawn on a trust account, check the consumer complaints against them, you will discover that they will approve you if you " BUY" thier Gold check cashing pass card. They deny you based on their profile that they set up. then approve you if you buy this pass, somethings rotten in Denmark, i beleive... if not totally fraudulent here

Keep in mind that Certegy meets the FCRA definition of a consumer reporting agency. If you were declined, they must send you all the information they are storing on you that was used as a basis for the declination.

Also, upon request, Certegy must provide a free annual report upon request.

In accordance with the FCRA, you have the right to dispute information contained in their files. They must investigate and send you the results.

Recent FCRA amendments [FACTA] also allows you to dispute with the business that supplied info to Certegy, if your initial dispute was not successful.

For what i was able to find online, Certegy is sooo incompetent that they have already been sued various times; class-action lawsuit. For not being able to secure OUR information and allow crooks to get a hold of it, and then what happens? WE, that pay our bills, maintain a good credit rating/score, never have a problem with our banks; all of a sudden, have OUR private information on the hands of people that damage our entire lives!
So, now, what do Certegy do? They come up with some ###ed way of creating a verification process that makes no sense, follows NO pattern, and only serves to embarrass loyal costumers that DO HAVE FUNDS on their accounts, use original bank checks, and have never had a problem before their system was implemented.

I wonder why is that that BANKS do not have a system in place to aid stores into verifying checks. Why is that that a company that has proven NOT TO BE RELIABLE, is let to continue in business and damaging good peoples' lives? Absurd! Shameful!

Maybe it's about time for another lawsuit! For defamation, personal damage, stereotyping based on unfunded profiling, etc...

Here is a kink for the lawsuits reported by Business Week

Key developments for Certegy Check Services, Inc.
Certegy Check Services, Inc. to Settle Class-Action Lawsuit Filed on Behalf of 8.5 Million People

03/24/2008

Certegy Check Services Inc. has offered to settle a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of 8.5 million people whose personal data was stolen by an IT worker at the company. Certegy announced in 2007 summer that a database administrator had copied and then sold data stored in its systems. The settlement would provide free monitoring of credit records and bank accounts, plus identity theft insurance coverage. Identity theft victims also could be reimbursed for some expenses.

11/1/2007

Another class-action lawsuit has been filed against Certegy Check Services Inc. The lawsuit charges that Certegy did not adequately protect confidential personal and financial information of its clients. The suit was filed in federal court in Jacksonville. A similar suit was filed in federal court in California in August. Certegy, which provides check verification services to major retailers, said in July that a former senior database administrator stole data and sold the information to marketing firms. Certegy filed a civil suit against the former employee.
Fidelity National Information Services Inc. Sued Over Breach of Data On 8.5 Million People

08/27/2007

A California law firm has filed a class-action suit charging Fidelity National Information Services Inc. (FIS) and one of its subsidiaries with negligence in connection with a data breach that exposed personal data of as many as 8.5 million people. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in California, also accuses the Jacksonville, Fla.-based transaction processor and outsourcer and its Certegy Check Services Inc. subsidiary of invasion of privacy and breach of implied contract. The suit does not seek specific damages. The complaint was filed by San Francisco-based Girard Gibbs LLP on behalf of the 8.5 million consumers.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy check declined in albertsons!

My husband was waiting for the bank to issue him a new debit card. Until then he went to Albertsons to buy some food and wrote a check out for $176 dollars and it was DECLINED. Our joint account had over $3000 in it so there is NO excuse for this.

The Albertsons checker just handed my husband a card to call some company called "Certegy" which is responsible for declining his check. I called and it TOOK forever to get a person. Once I did he said he sees no reason why it was declined but gave me another 800 # to call so I could find out why that happened. (We want to make sure it doesn't happen again!) My husband was embarrassed and mad after filling his shopping cart full of food to stand at the check out and be told his check is no good in front of all kinds of people. This is bullcrap!

Anyway...when the one guy at Certegy gave me the other 800 # you can't get a REAL live person. Its some auto caller where you talk in and give your information. After it gets your check number it tells you to HOLD on and your call will be handled in the order it was recieved. Well guess what...NO ONE EVERY ANSWERS. I have tried over 4 times now. I have waited on the phone each time for OVER 30 minutes and you just listen to the same thing over and over.

We have a RIGHT to know WHY the check was denied by this company "Certegy". I googled them and I see they have been in lots of trouble for declining checks and have had major lawsuits against them. So since that is true...why do these stores continue to use them?! We are so pissed of at Albertsons. They KNOW my husband for the last 14 years...we are GOOD customers. But they just LOST us..we will shop some where else from now on if they are going to use a LAME a#$ company like that.

I am calling Albertsons tomorrow to tell them we wont' be coming back and why! I want the store manager to know that Certegy is some garbage company that doesn't even have a LIVE person to talk too. It leaves you on hold after it takes your routing number and checking account number...now I'm really worried. I thought I was SAFE since Albertsons gave my husband this card to call about the problem.

I am so ticked off about this. Anyone that has had problems with their check being declined by Certegy...call the STORE that you were declined at and let them know that you will NOT be shopping at their store anymore if they are going to continue to do business with Certegy. Our checks are GOOD. We hardly ever write a check when we are out...but that was SO EMBARRASSING to my poor husband. Everyone looked at him like he was some bum trying to get over. Albertsons and Certegy should both be so ashamed of themselves. No excuse for this!

One very MAD customer!

FISGlobal.com / Certegy check cashing

I had my first experience with Certigy when I was totally humilliated at a Walgren store. When my check was declined, I made them let me call Certigy and made everyone in the store wait while they asked all the confirming information and still would not clear my check. I was told my check writing habits alerted them and there was nothing negative to make them decline my check. I subsequently had them send me "an application" so I could write checks where ever they did business. Filled the paperwork out and haven't heard from them. Two more times I have since had this problem at Publix and Ross Dept Store. I don't know how I got in their system or how to find out what stores use them. It is really a humiliating experience. I have to say I had a heated discussion with them by phone after my Publix experience since this has never happened their before. How do you get out of their system? Wish I knew.

This happened to me at walmart, I had a state issued check, never wrote a check at walmart either. Nor have I ever returned anything or bought anything from them with a bad credit card. I was embrassed as well in front of people. I called certigy and got the same information I understand not revealing how to perform fraud. But I want to know what information about me they have that says I am a fraud risk. If someone has used my identity I want to know they are not helping me out here. I think I have to right to know what kind of information somone is collecting in reference t o me. I tried another check with them and was declined also. I am the common tie between these checks and my social security number. If they ask for that why what are they doing with my Social Security number? They said there was no problem with the check and no problem with me but they could not cash the check? Um what? I asked did they look at my credit report they said no.. I asked who they get their information from I was told walmart. Why would walmart pay a third party company to tell themselves somthing they already know. Then I asked how am I supposed to cash this check since its after bank hours I have no gas or groceries. They said go some where that does not use certigy? How do I know who? This also mean that its not walmart its actually certigy that has this information. They say its somthing about patterns that relate to fraud? How is the act of cashing a check different between people all checks being cashed would be similar to fraud so everyone should be declined. I want to know how I as an individual am resembeling the act of a crook now not only am I embarresed because I am humiliated in front of the cashier and the other customer who see my face and remember it as having done somthing that I didnt do to be either a bad check writer or a crook. If your a lawyer and this is a case contact me at Transfer2box@hotmail.com.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy scam charges

8/12 I stopped to purchase $40. in gas at Circle K. Wrote a check, as I always do. The clerk ran my check through the machine and said apparently the system was down as, it wasn't taking it. She did not give me any kind of receipt or anything. She then ran it again, and got a receipt that stated duplicate EFT. So I went to my ATM machine and withdrew $40., and back and purchased the $40. of gas.

When I checked my bank statement, there was the check # and charge of $40. that was not accepted.

I walked into a Cricle K by my house that i frequently visit and i happened to see money on the ground, i asked the girl who was standing by it if it was hers, she picked it up and said no; Almost imedietly the employee (behind the counter ) reached over and grabbed the money from the young ladies hand and put it under the counter, ( not in the money drawer ). Flabberghasted, i wait for the other customers to leave before i start complaining to this employee about how she just took the money that i found and pocketed it, her excuses were that the cameras can see everything i do and ill get in trouble for stealing. But what did she steal? it was almost like she knew that i caught her and she started pleading for a crime that wasnt even committed, noone stole anything, someone that night lost money, i found it, and she unjustly took it. After she grabbed it she started acting all happy like she was getting married. but then again she could've been so happy that she just banked a couple hundred dollars, so i will never go to circle K again; Also i am fighting this to the max because i'll be darned if some fat ugly trailer trash girl is gonna get that money unjustly.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy check rejection

This year I have written 12 checks at K-Mart totaling over $1000; my average monthly spending at K-Mart is $135.00. On September 9, 2008, I wrote a check there and my check was rejected. I paid cash for my purchases and with great alarm, immediately went to my bank where I was assured that there was no problem with my account. Then I called the number on the back of my rejected check (Certegy Check Services). It seems that this middle aged grandmother fell into some category that had been established by who knows what and my check must not be good! They wanted to send me an application to fill out for them so I would be in their system to prevent it from happening again. I AM NOT filling out any application for them in order for ME to write checks. I do not plan to shop at K-Mart anymore, but now after reading other complaints about other stores, where can I shop without the fear of this embarrassing thing happening again?

FISGlobal.com / Certegy payroll check denied

Today is the second time in 2 months i have had Certegy tell Walmart to deny cashing my check. Let me break this down in steps. Step 1. I was in line with 4 other co-workers and we all had payroll checks to cash, i was the 4th out of 5 ppl. Step 2. They had their check cashed...i did not. Step 3. Walmart gives me the happy little number that i called last time and i call it. The "machine" says the same thing it said last time, "Your check wasn't denied due to any type of fraudulent activity it was denied as a Fraud Preventative." WTH does that even mean? my check was different than anyone elses i had my ID and put in my social(the works) and they deny my check after cashing the past 2 and denying the one before those for the exact same reason. The only reason i cash my check at Walmart is because i get paid at midnight on friday and my bank isnt in the town that i go to college and work at. Ive been cashing the same checks their for 7 months now. Worst part is this has happened to some of my co-workers as well. These Certegy douschebags need to go. Worst part is the machine said it will relay to the merchant that i called or something like that. but just like last time i bet i won't be able to cash my check there still for the next 5 days.

I have tried twice with my payroll check. The first time they said that my payroll check "could" be put in a category that could be used in identify theft. This time they said that they don't have proper information on my company. Two months ago they cashed the payroll check. These people need to go out of business.

I completely agree with everyone here. After hearing about how Wal Mart cashes checks for $3 up to $1, 000 or so I imagined it was too good to be true. I do have a bank account but my bank closes by the time I am off work and I needed the money right away. I am only 22 years old and very limited on cash amount available. When I went into Wal Mart the lady behind the counter asked me to enter my ssn # twice and after that she said that I had gotten denied... I was hesitant to even give out my ssn #. I did not know they checked your credit... I have none or limited credit. I don't understand why that would matter if it is a PAYROLL check. Why penalize me when I worked hard for my money. Penalize the person writing the checks if they bounce or don't clear. Very much frustrating I must say.

Same thing happened to me today! I have cashed my payroll checks there for years and after an extremly bad bad day the lady looked at me and said is this your first time cashing checks here? The dumb lady behind the counter knows that it was not the case cuz I get here very time! So she said re-enter your SS again and then she smiles and gave me this little piece of paper saying We cannnot cash this check and to call certegy! What a crock of [censor]! I will never ever step foot in a Wal-Mart store again!

Worst experience i have ever had today, and i agree with you completely JennF203, wal mart, or this certegy will NEVER AGAIN get my service. I recently went into wal mart, which i find that store annoying but i have a family to feed and grocery shopping is much cheaper there usually, i have a two year old daughter and went to the money center to cash my check as i too dont get it until about 9:30pm and figured since i was there i would just cash it. Well i have cashed many checks there before and never had a problem and i work for a very BIG company with a lot of money, so obviously my check wasnt bad! As i gave them all of my information and the woman started counting money out to me this little receipt printed out that said they refused to cash my check because this company is protecting them from "fraud." Really? Okay. Whatever, so ill cash it at my bank right? Think again! This company has no placed a block on my check for five days! So maybe they should explain to my two year old daughter why she cant have diapers for the next five days, or have milk for the next five days right? (exaggeration) As far as im concerned this company has no business being a part of my life and i will make sure that they wont. Also, as i was near tears and in the checkstand with a very heavy dresser i had just purchased, my daughter fell asleep on me while i was carrying her and i couldnt put her down, the [censored] that was ringing up my groceries wouldnt even help me put them in my freaking cart, and then when i asked if i could have someone help me to my car she told me that i would have to wait 27 minutes until they came back from lunch...really? F*ck you wal mart, and Certegy!

I wish Good Morning America would expose this Certegy Service for what they are. I have no problem with someone refusing me service, but at least give me the respect as a consume in telling or explaining to me why. People, normal hard working people don't have the inclination or the knowledge behind your iron curtain Certegy to read your minds or fiddle through piles of paperwork that a company with a faceless voice. Wake up America and stop inhabiting places that refuse to give you service! IF your local wal mart won't give you the attention you were use to before they arrived in your town, leave them? It isn't that hard you know. When you need a loaf of bread, pay an extra 10 cents and go to the local small town store, if you need a pepsi, get it somewhere on your way home from work. Boy Cot those that refuse to service you. Isn't that the way our grandparents got something done ages ago? Oh wait, they had a back bone and that was a time that people actually spoke to someone instead of getting a recording or the brush off. Once we were valued customers, now you are just a number, a faceless aspect lining their pockets with your hard earned dollars. No, they don't care and won't care until you take a stand. I haven't had this happen to me, but to my son. A hard worker trying to provide for his family. Wal Mart no longer nor ever will be graced with my presence or that of my family. I think I still have a backbone enough to do that, we'll see if I matter. I doubt it, but I will get the satisfaction that Wal Mart and this Certegy won't be a part of my life. Aaaahh, that really feels amazing too.

I work for the US Postoffice in GA. Today, Saturday, I went to Walmart to cash my payroll check, and was denied. I have money in my account, do not write bad checks, and needless to say I've never got a bad check from the Post office.
I also called the number, no response. If my bank has no problem with my checks why does Certegy?

This company is hurting the American people. Small business can not give payroll checks to this company. They not only hurt the person but hurt small business. Look at their track record, their company has a class action suite that stoled over 8.5 million id. Great country that allows this kind of company to ruin lives. This is the class of people who have built this country. I have yet spoke to 1 person that is from the USA. Our they a real US company, I don't think so.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy payroll cashing

Today, August 4, 2008 I went to cash my payroll check at Walmart as I do every other week for the past year. The "customer service rep" handed me a printed pull sheet stating We cannot cash this check. Our decision was based on information provided by Certegy Check Services. No sorry, we can't help you. No, call this number, nada.

I have never written a bad check, my credit rating is good, I have cashed my check every other week over year from the same company in the same amount. Suppose I need to start depositing to a real bank as opposed to using Walmart's convenient check cashing service.

What changed between last week and this week is beyond me...

FISGlobal.com / Certegy denied personal check

I had a horrible experience when shopping at a local Dicks Sporting Goods retailer. I shop there frequently, but usually use cash for transactions. I made $153 in purchases and submitted a personal check for payment - the clerk asked me for several forms of identification along with the check which I was in complete compliance with of course. I gave the clerk my driver's liscense and social security number - address, phone number and date of birth. ALL OF WHICH HE VERBALIZED OVER THE TELEPHONE TO AN AUTHORIZATION AGENT FROM CERTEGY! Not only was my personal information shared with the rest of the public standing in line behind me, but my check was denied. Knowing that I had plenty of funds to cover this check - I was mortified. I called my bank, Dicks Sporting Goods corportate offices and found that I needed to speak with Certegy. I got nothing but the run around from certegy. Customer service could not tell me why my check was denied other than it was flagged for some kind of profile to protect me from fraud and identity theft. Did I not just mention that I provided several forms of identification for them... This is beyond ridiculous. My itention is to reach retailers who use Certegy Check verification service to let them know that this is routine practice for them and that they should look for better service with another service. I also observed that there are several class action lawsuits with sizeable settlements against Certegy - I wonder why! I believe I may have another suit for them. How about the breech of confidentiality that I experienced?!

FISGlobal.com / Certegy certegy check services

I recently went to K-Mart and tryed to write a check with a new account my husband and I had opened. I was declined and it was more than devastating being I had plenty of money in my account. I immediately called certegy when I returned home and they told me that I was declined due to it being a new account and not because I had anything on my record. I already knew that but politely agreed with the customer service representative. They then told me that they would send me a "gold application" to fill out with a voided check and that this matter would be handled. It has been weeks and today I finally received my response from them. I was still declined but they assured me that I should try the company in which I was declined to start with and see if it goes through. I have heard nothing but terrible things about certegy check services and feel as if they are the worst company out there. Why would I go back and embarrass myself again? How stupid would that be? I don't know what needs to be done but someone needs to get there crap right and fix this problem. It just happened to my mother-in-law here in the same town but different store. She has had her banking account for over 15 years. When I received my response letter, certegy didn't even have my name spelled correctly when I sent them a voided check as well as my information. What an irresposible company. So now I have to remember what places use this terrible check service so i do not get embarrassed again. I hope certegy knows how they are affecting the companies they represent because a lot of people will not even return to the places they have been humiliated at and certegy does not have to pay the price for that. The store does! I hope certegy goes out of business!

Three times in the last three months I have had checks declined at three different stores all which use Certegy to process checks. Each time I try to find out why, I get the same response, your transaction fits the pattern of a fraulent transaction. When pressed to explain, they refuse to tell me what that pattern is (its proprietry). Interesting fact is that when my wife writes a check on the same account at the same store, she is not declined.

Given the responses I have received from Certegy (and no help whatsoever in resolving the problem), I can only think of two reasons that they keep denying my checks:

1) Their computer algorithm is incorrect

2) They are harassing me

They deny that either is true but fail to offer anyother explanations.

Anyone know of a good lawyer? Is Certegy an example of a business that has run amok?

I tried to cash a check at Walmart a couple of days ago because I had to work during bank hours. The clerk told me that she could not cash my paycheck and that I needed to call this number to find out why. I went home and dialed the number and an automated system said that my check cashing paterns was showing signs of fraudulant behavior. I was not satisfied with this answer because I had never had any problems cashing my check there before. By the time I got a young girl from customer service on the line I was furious. She told me the same thing. I asked her for more details because I wanted to know if someone else was trying to cash checks in my name or what was going on. She said that that information was not available to the public. I cussed her out and planned on sending Certegy a NASTY letter. If that customer service girl is reading this, I'm sorry I know it's not your fault but you seriously need to find another job. If you are not going to cash someone's check at least give them details as to why. Certegy can suck a fart out of my a$$ for all I care.

With all the complaints being filed against Certegy, why are large department store chains still using them? Two days ago I had a check in the amount of $9.06 refused by Sears! My debit card was stolen and I hadn't yet received the new one. The cashier looked at me like I had just robbed the place. I had enough cash to make the purchase, but not to regain my dignity. I have yet to get an answer on why my check was refused, other than "negative information from a third party."

Solution: Stop writing checks. Use a debit or credit card, or cash. Checks are dead.

Dave, I've had a similar problem with Certegy, where they neither offered explanation, nor resolution. If I am to register myself in their Gold program, then I should have no more check writing difficulties. I have a couple of problems with this. First of all, I have never committed any crime and I have no record whatsoever of writing bad checks. My phone call should have been suficient for them to see that this was true and to remove my name from their list. Secondly, as I look over their Gold membership application, there is a lot of personal information that they require, such as my employer's name, how many years I've been with the company, their phone number, and, of course they want to know my annual household income level, as well. Oh, and, by the way, it wasn't long ago that around 8.5 million people who are already registered with them had all of this information sold to marketing companies by a rogue employee of theirs. Not a very tight ship their running. But, the fact that I have been singled out by this company and don't even have the option of writing a check at places like Ross or Walmart and God knows where else, is a sort of harrassement. And why does Certegy care? It's not like I'm their customer. They just expect me to jump through their hoop or lose my check writing priveledges because they say so. Life would be simpler for me if I just comply, which is how most people think. But, instead, I'm investigating the legality of their type of harrassement and I plan on lodging every possible complaint with every possible agency.

You don't have the right to pay by check. It is not legal tender. Ask your bank. They have a debit card you can use to access funds in your checking account and the retailer will know immediately if the transaction is good. With checks, the retailer has to wait DAYS to find out if your checking account has been closed, if a stop payment has been made on the check being used, or if the account owner has reported the checks stolen. The retailer loses if there is check fraud committed and they can't afford to take a hit like that. It's best if you stop using checks and start using debit cards and credit cards. Just ask your friendly neighborhood banker.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy - fraud & scam

Received notices to supply an affidavit on requests to pay off a bounced check? Not my account, not my bank? After many attempts and hours waiting on hold was able to determine what bank. Called the bank, gave them my ss # and vitals, so sorry wrong guy? Called CCSI again, oops!, we picked out the wrong (common name) from our data base? Letters stating, "...

FISGlobal.com / Certegy declined checks

I am so fed up with excuses from regions and certegy. Regions debited my account for over 1000 dollars and admitted it was all their fault. Now 2 weeks later I am no longer able to write checks where certegy processes checks. No one wants to admit fault but now I can't get my daughters medicine because my check writing ability has been tarnished through no fault of my own. The banks need to learn what they do to people living pay check to paycheck and actually don't overdraw their account.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy poor customer service

My husband travels. He occasionally writes a check from his check book. He obviously has a different check book than I do. We can't share the same set of checks when we are not in the same town. We happened to be together today shopping at Walgreens. I wrote a check to pay for our purchase which was declined. I stood at the register and called Certegy because I have funds in my account and have never bounced a check. I could not for the life of me imagine why my check was declined. It was because my husband wrote a check from his book earlier this week and our checks were out of sequence. Have you ever grabbed the wrong check book - not to mention couples who may operate out of two check books. This ques the Certegy system to decline your check. Although my husband was with me, we had both check books with both sequences with us, we both had multiple forms of ID, we have very high check numbers from an account that has been open for over 20 years and we had a deposit slip showing funds of over $5000 available as of yesterday - there was no exception to the rule. Centergy refused to make any kind of exception. They also informed me that if either of us attempted to write a check at ANY store in the Centergy system, it would be declined for the next three days. I discussed this with the manager of Walgreens and he is at the mercy of the Centergy system. I have worked in the collection and check recovery business for over twenty years. I helped develop and impliment an electronic check solution. Our solution allowed our client to use the system to alert them of red flags but also to make sure they could provide good customer service in a case like mine. My entire family uses Walgreens for prescriptions, personal items and household items. We may spend an average of $500 per month, easily. I will opt NOT to shop at Walgreens and I will attempt to find a non-Centergy contracted store to make my purchases, even if I have to pay more at a local, family owned, pharmacy in my area. This system bullies consumers. Stores that buy in to the philosephy that the need that kind of service to protect themselves are foolish. There is another pharmacy down the street from almost every Walgreens in the United States. When you are in a competitive market like that, you need to think just as much about customer service as protecting yourself from fraud.

There is many stores that go through Certegy. I too, am going to try to find other stores that do not go through them...I hate them. I feel victimized by them. They are cocky with their lame, "sorry for the inconvenience" bullcrap. And they wouldn't even give me a reason why I was declined.
I filed a complaint with the BBB and am going to write some angry letters. I am planning on letting the stores know and realize there are people being judged wrongly by the system they have allowed to rule over them.
Maybe I will write to Chris Matthews...maybe someone should check them out. Obviously they are hurting the business's perhaps more than helping them. I know I am not shopping at Walmart anymore for me and my family.
If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them.

I couldn't agree with you more. I also had my checks out of sequence as I had grabbed another book of checks on a prior day and used one at another store while I was in a hurry. I also had plenty of money in the bank, no bad check writing history not to mention overdraft protection through my savings account as well. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB and not shop Walgreens!

FISGlobal.com / Certegy - failure to cash my check!

I too tried to cash my check at Wal-Mart and was declined. When I called Certegy to find out what the problem was, I was informed the decline did not have anything to do with my information, but it had to do with the company that wrote the check. FISGlobal.com / Certegy declined check authorization!

For the second time in the last six months, our business check was refused at Office Depot in Selma, CA. They gave us a card with information to contact a company named CERTEGY, which handles their check authorizations. They would not tell us why our check was declined. They basically told us it would be declined every time we tried to shop there in the future. We have never bounced a check in 28 years of business. Obviously we will no longer be shopping at Office Depot. It appears that Office Depot does not care about the $3000 we spent with them last year, ALL WITH CHECKS!

This is unfortunate, and exactly why I don't use checks anymore. They are becoming an extinct form of payment anyway. Banks are now charging for using them, thus forcing customers to use debit or credit, or *GASP* cash. Not to be crass, but I would highly suggest using plastic. OD is not the only one using Certegy.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy checks denied!

This is the worst company I have ever had to deal with. My roommate and I had been cashing our checks at Wal-Mart since we gained employment with a local bakery in September of last year with absolutely no problems until March 8th, 2008. Both of our checks were declined. Of course that was upsetting especially since we have been doing it weekly for months now. We are both without a bank account and this used to be a very convenient way to cash our paychecks. Upon the denial of the checks, we were printed out a receipt with a phone number and very minimal information about Certegy, the company that provided the denial. It stated that if you wanted information about this transaction to call. So I did. The lady that I spoke to was very nice, she explained that it was not any fault of ours, and may never happen again, but that there was something that my employer needed to clear up and to have them call. As irritating as that answer was, I went with it and had to go somewhere else to cash our checks. then, for some odd reason we thought that there was just some fluke in their system and went back to try again the following week, especially since we were told that it may not happen again. Once again denied. So upon returning to work that next week, I informed my boss of the situation, despite wanting to involve them at all. She got on the phone with Brian, an extremely rude and unhelpful representative at Certegy, who informed her that we were feeding her a bunch of bull (in those exact words, too) and that there was nothing for her to clear up, but further into the same conversation, informed her that she needed to get a letter from her bank stating that their account is valid and that it is in good standing. The company I work for has been doing business with the same bank for 60 years! It is not possibly and rather unexplainable how their account can go from being valid to being in-valid in the span of 1 week. Certegy could not explain it either. Their only solution was a letter from my employers bank and then it would take 3 business days to clear up! I just cannot believe that this much hassle could come out of wanting to cash your check. It makes me curious to know if Wal-Mart is at all aware of the headache and inconvenience that this company is needlessly causing WAL-MART customers. I always shop at the store when I am done cashing my check and they are preventing me from doing that. I would hope that they would not want this to reflect upon their company, but to me it does because they picked them and continue to use them. I plan on making a formal complaint with Wal-Mart, Certegy, the Better Business Bureau, and anyone else I think should be aware of the crappy service that this company provides. Not only will I never cash a check through any company using Certegy again, I will also no longer be shopping at Wal-Mart, until something is done about it.

The reason your check was denied was not enough information, usually means you don't write a lot of checks. You used your card for most purchases.

tried to purchase a large item from Big Lots Uniontown PA & my check was DENIED. The cashier never gave me a reason, she did not know, but it did take my debit card from the same checking account with PNB. I was furious at them denying my check!
Like to know where CERTEGY gets there information? They better recheck their information, from what I see there is ALOT of complaints with this company! I still don't know what their reason for denial of my check. Have shopped in alot of different stores and was NEVER DENIED! I would like a answer as to why I was denied...

FISGlobal.com / Certegy non-authorization of check!

On 18 Mar 08, I attempted to write a check for grocery purchase at a local grocery store chain in North Hampton, NH. The check was not authorized for the purchase. I have written checks for purchases at this and other of their stores over the years. There has never been a problem until this. The store clerk handed me a preprinted card with information from Certegy Check Services along with a telephone number to call to make an inquiry on the matter. I am not familiar with Certegy. I called their Customer Service Center, and although the representative was polite, she, in my opinion, wanted too much personal information and I declined to provide it. All I wanted to know was why the check was not authorized for the purchase. I was concerned if something happened to my credit, payment history, or bank accounts. On 19 Mar 08, I confirmed my bank accounts are intact and Credit History is excellent via an on-line Credit History request.

I was able to conduct an on-line search and determined there are a great number of complaints against Certegy for the same reason as my complaint as well as other types of complaints. A look into the Better Business Bureau records located where Certegy's home office is located in Florida disclosed "Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with BBB due to one or more unresolved complaint(s)." The question is still unresolved as to why this occurred. Until this is resolved, I will decline to conduct any further business at the chain's stores and will inform friends and family of this incident so it does not happen to them. Complaints filed with FTC, the store's home office and BBB in Florida.

I too tried to cash a $92 Federal check at Wal-Mart here in Florida and was declined. Why are they claiming they can cash checks for $3, but don’t? I gave them 2 pieces of Government Picture I.D’s and my social security card. All they asked me was that if I use another name. I do not. Still no answers but based on everyone’s experience, Certegy Check Services must be a fraud.

My husband and I went to cash a check at a casino in Minnesota, when I was handed back the hundred dollar check along with a little card with certigy's number on it and was told to call them
I called and they told me there was someone who cashed a check a saturday before the saturday I tried to cash mine and it was a similar number to my check number so I used my debit card at the ATM instead. I thought nothing of this until I got a card in the mail saying certigy was under a law suite for fraud and I could be one of the victims. I'm thankful I did not confirm any information to certigy about my bank account, but they probably already had it from the casino. I wish I new the websight to check for my name . there was an article in Readers Diguest with a web sight on it, but I don't remember the web sight.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy check rejected - no reason

A copy of the letter I sent to K-Mart...

To Whom It May Concern:

I have shopped at K-Mart and Sears store for most of my life and thanks to the way my husband and I were treated at your Duluth- Miller Hill K-Mart store, we will never shop at a Sears or a K-Mart again. I'm just not that much of a masochist.

I lived in Duluth, MN for ten years and moved to Warroad, MN 2 years ago to start a new life with my then fiance, now husband. Since we didn't get to celebrate our first wedding anniversary in January (my husband's grandmother died), we decided to go to Duluth for a special weekend celebration we called "Anni-Valentine's". The weekend of February 15, 16 & 17 was to be our special getaway.

We stayed at a hotel, ate at some of the best restaurants in town and did some shopping- including a trip to K-Mart for some kitchen items, jeans for my husband, slippers for me and some underwear for me. It may not sound like a big deal to you, but there are not many shopping options up here- except traveling 1 1/2 hours east or west to either go to the K-Mart in International Falls or Thief River Falls. There are no slippers to be found at Marvin Home Center. I've looked.

We purchased $109.04 in merchandise and tried to use our debit card, which was declined. We figured it was declined due to a daily cap of purchases which we had forgotten about. So I whipped out my checkbook, knowing I had over $2000.00 available, and wrote a check. My check was declined by your check verification service- Certegy. I was absolutely dumbfounded and mortified.

There I was, a person who has never written a bad check, being told my checks are no good in front of a line full of people who likely thought I was some sort of ###. I next presented my Sears card, which I had wanted to make a payment on, not rack up MORE charges on. At least that went through. Had I been thinking clearly, I would have just left the stuff on the counter and walked. I'm paying you an obnoxious interest rate because you embarassed me. Now I truly feel dumb.

I was given no reason at the counter why my check was declined, I was just handed the check back, which now had some information printed on it. I promptly went back to my hotel and called Certegy. And apparently my checking account didn't have too many issues- I was able to take out $200.00 in cash at a nearby ATM.

According to Certegy, I have no negative checks on file, nor was any sort of block placed on my account. DUH. I think I would know about that. I was then told by some guy who barely spoke English that my account was blocked because they had seen "Suspicious Activity" on it. He then said I could fill out a form to get reduced restrictions on my account. I went ahead and told Apu he could send it. (Apparently he has left the Qwik-E-Mart...)

So here are the problems I have with this situation-

1) What business does this company have poking through my checking account? I never gave anyone permission to access my account. I believe this is an illegal invasion of my privacy. I plan to ask the Minnesota Attorney General's office about it.

2) There are no posted disclosures in the store stating that my account will be checked over by you or your hired goons. (You really don't have any right to know about those purchases at WhipsNChains.com)

3) MY CHECK WAS DECLINED FOR NO VALID REASON, CAUSING ME EMBARASSMENT!

4) I now have to pay your godawful credit card bank interest for purchases I now wish I had left on the counter while flipping whatever genius at your company came up with this idea THE BIRD. (A finger is worth a thousand words... perhaps I could have saved myself some typing here...)

5) Your Certegy people sent me a form that looks suspiciously like a credit application. I am NOT providing any personal information to these people. They have no right to my information and I am just not dumb enough to give my information to them to sell to whatever company they wish. (Or have stolen by some random emplyee as they recently did...)

If you took five minutes to read some of the horrid accounts posted by consumers all over the country about this company, you can see why I will not be doing business with you so long as you use them.

I don't really expect you to respond to this or to give a crap, but I do want you to know that I have posted a complaint on [redacted].com and ComplaintsBoard.com. A letter to the Attorney General, Lori Swanson, is also being sent.

As a financial worker in a retail business, I know that bad checks are a real problem, but I also know that there is a right and wrong way to treat people. You folks have made the wrong choice and now I am choosing not to play the game.

If in five years your corporate people are trying to figure out why you are on your way to bankruptcy again, you now have a possible reason- pissed off and embarassed customers who decided to go elsewhere.

At least we can say each place we went gave us something special. The **** gave us free dessert, as did ******, the hotel gave us a discount just because they like us and you gave us some embarassment and frustration we won't soon forget.

Thanks for the memories,

Michaela A. Cyrus

PS- In case you actually do bother looking into this matter, the receipt number referenced on the back of the check was **** [protected] *****.

Harrassment

To whom it may concern,

My wife received a telephone call from a collections officer requesting payment for Best Buy services through the Geek Squad. We unfortunately did not get her name but the person was extremely rude to my wife demanding money for a stop payment check that was previously issued. The check was reissued to Geek Squad Agent but not recorded to our account and Certegy was not notified. I called someone from collections at Certegy and spoke with a Richard (he would not give me his last name) to explain the situation. He also was very rude and unprofessional and demanded that Certegy receive payment. I don’t know who or what Certegy is but I explained that the check was replaced to Best Buy and complained about the way we were treated. Richard terminated the phone call. I have filed a formal complaint with Best Buy for harassment.

FISGlobal.com / Certegy check denied

As I was reading through all the other complaints I kept wandering...why can't we do something about this company? I have been fighting with them since August 07 when my check was denied to Eyemasters. They told me to send in a Certegy Gold Application, and I wouldn't have anymore problems. So I did. I had tried to call numerous times to make sure the application had gone through so I would not have that embarrassment again. At Christmas I had a check denied, which I just blew off because it was Certegy. Then last Friday (2-15) I had a check denied at Target. When I called the number I got the same recording, that it was just protection for me, not because I had a bad check writing history. I have been calling every day since then and finally got someone today. The reason they gave me for it being denied was just so stupid I couldn't hardly believe it. Here is the reason. On 2-7 I wrote a check (ck # 1176), on 2-15 I wrote a check (ck #1183). They said my check was denied because of the big gap between my check numbers! I was pissed off to put it quite frankly. She just kept saying "I'm sorry for the inconvenience, this is just a measure we take to protect you". I told her I was getting no protection from them, all i was getting was a pain in my you know where and alot of embarrassment, because the teller and the people behind me in line will just automatically assume its because I write hot checks.

So what can be done about this company? Reading through all the other complaints you realize how ridiculous it is the problems they have caused people. It ought to be against some kind of law?

I ATTEMPTED TO PAY FOR TWO FENCE BOARDS, BY CHECK AT HOME DEPOT TODAY. MY TOTAL WAS JUST OVER 5 DOLLARS. TO MY SURPRISE, MY CHECK WAS DENIED! I HAVE QUITE A BIT OF MONEY IN MY ACCOUNT, BUT, UPON CALLING CYNERGY, WAS TOLD THEY WERE ADVISED MY ACCOUNT WAS CLOSED! OF COURSE, THIS CAUSED ME GREAT CONSTERNATION, SO I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE BANK. (I'VE HAD MY ACCOUNT THERE FOR YEARS.) THEY VERIFIED MY ACCOUNT IS STILL INTACT. HOWEVER, THIS COMPANY IS TELLING MERCHANTS THAT I'M ATTEMPTING TO CASH CHECKS ON A CLOSED ACCOUNT. HOW ARE THEY ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH THIS?

Today Nov. 14, 2009 I was told that the reason that my check was denied is because there have been a lot of fraud checks at this store lately and that my check was close to the fraud check numbers. This just did not make any since to me because my check is good and is not a bad check nor the other check. They said that it did not have to do anything with me and that I did not have any bad checks nor a bad record that it was just a thing that happens sometimes and it's their decision.
Funny thing they told me the same thing twice last year when I was shopping another store. I was embarrassed and mad. I told them that I never did have this problem before one of their own employees stole my identification/personal information and sold it to another party. Finally he said to me, 'We Will Not Accept Any Of Your Checks.'
After I hung up the phone I re - read over the letter that I received from Certegy dated July 17, 2007. One of the paragraphs said: As you might expect, the employee was terminated upon Certegy learning of his actions. Certegy promptly investigated this incident to ensure that any inconvenience experienced by you is minimized. In particular, Certegy: Implemented a fraud watch on Certegy's internal systems for those checking accounts that were impacted. MY OPINION NOW! I'm reading this like, any checks that I write to a business, and that business uses Certegy, my check is just automatically denied due to the Fraud Watch. I thought the fraud watch was suppose to help protect me from any other employee or anyone else from steeling my private information. All I've seen now that Fraud Watch is, is a label that is now on my name and my checks that go through certegy and it's like it reads, FRAUD WATCH! Oh, watch out for this check acct., it's FRAUD. Is anyone else getting this too?
This company discriminates on the innocent. Their employee raped me, I did not steal, lie, or try to cheat them. So who's innocent and who's guilty now?
Their has to be someone out there that knows about this kind of law and is willing to help.

CHecks are old fashion. I have yet to see a checking account (even the free accounts) not have a debit card attached. Start using a debit card and you will have no problems. As long as you got the $$$ to cover the purchase.

I had the same experience with this company. This is what we did. We went to a store and the total purchase was $202.39, I proceed to pay with an American Express, the merchant said they do not accept it. They accepted checks, so we decided to write a check. After being denied by Certegy and being on hold for more than 45 minutes I decided to talk to a store manager. We said to the manager that he should be able to override the system, by not doing so he will lost a sale and a customer. That, the information he could obtain from us will be enough if the check became unpaid and that our state provides serious legal punishment to those who give hot checks. He proceed to accept the check. If these do not work with your merchant, please write them a letter with your story and stop buying in that store. One last comment, contact your Bank and ask them to write Certegy on your behalf. Banks should be able to provide these companies with some kind of feedback about the account holder that will allow them to take decisions on checks. Hope this helps.

In March I had some checks from a 10year closed account. The bank doesn't exist anymore. It was bought by Chase in 1998. Someone has been cashing checks with this bogus paper. It has now turned up on my credit report thanks to Certegy! If they did their homework they would see it was fraud.
Easier to tag the innocent.

I went to K-Mart today and wrote a check and was declined by Certegy. I was humiliated and felt like a fool in a line of customers. I wasn't declinded for "bad check writing", in fact I have no record of any bounced checks with any check verification companies. The automated system at Certegy stated it had something to do with my check writing pattern and that it was for my protection. REALLY? COME ON! I called back and spoke with a live operator and all she wanted to do was send me a brochure on how I can elevate my check writing abilities with them. WHAT? I write at checks at Kmart at least once a month. I have also written them at TJ Maxx and Marshalls and other places that use Certegy and have NEVER had this problem. My bank is in awe that I'd be declined for this absurdity. I was told by Certegy to use a debit card. Well, guess what? I don't always like to use it and most times it's because I've left it at home. I should be able to pay for something in any manner I please. How dare Certegy dictate what I can and can not do. How can they get away with this?

I am on hold with these people as we speak. I have not been able to write checks at many of the local merchants in my area because of Certegy. I can't get any relief or response from them by phone and there is nothing on a website unless you want their services. This is an embarrassment and a huge hassel. If anyone knows of action being taken against this company, please pass it along. Thank you. Laura.

I had this same problem, I write a lot of check at Home Depot as a business, last year over $50, 000.00. Today my check was declined becasue I fit the profile for fraud. I guess I will be doing my shopping at Lows for now on if this is the way Home Depot is going to do business. They should be using local check collection companys, not some national company that will cost them money. No wonder their bottom line is not that good!
