cheated me with money
I went to gym to keep my body fit. As a new customer, I was offered a free personel traning session. I went to personel trainer, NICK(Liar and cheat) and showed my interest to get free session on january 12, 2010. He told me to get free session I have to sign some papers with bank information. Without hesitation, I signed the papers.Nick did not give me any...

I went through that same garbage with them. I got the flyer stating that it was $20 to enroll & $20 for the first month. When I signed up I ended up shelling out nearly $100. A few months later I ended up moving, but knowing that I had signed a 1 year contract I continued to make the payments, & on time. When I knew the contract was coming to an end I attempted to contact them about cancelling my membership I got the run around. I tried to locate the phone number for the specific gym I had signed up with (north plainfield, nj). At the time, the phone number wasn't listed.. Anywhere. I checked google, yahoo, super pages, yellow pages, & 411 & nothing came up. I even called retro's in other area's and they all told me that they couldn't look up my member info unless I called that specific retro, & they couldn't give the phone number. I eventually found the number on a question posted on cha cha & called them. It was june 12th, and the girl that answered told me my last payment on the contract would have been on may 19th & that I would need to bring a letter to the manager stating that I didn't want to renew my contract. The next day I did just that & the manager told me I need to bring that in 60 days before my contract was up. I explained to him what hassel I went through trying to get in touch with them & he told me he would take care of it. On june 19th I was billed for another month. I firgured i'd probably have to wait out the 60 days, so I did. After 60 days I closed my debit card so that they couldn't continue to charge me, as they had know reason to do so, I held up my over rediculous part of the bargain. At the end of august I received a letter stating that they're payment had been declined and they were going to send it to collections. I called the billing company on the letter and when I spoke to a rep she told me that there was no action made to cancel my membership & that I would have to pay for an additional 60 days before I was out of my contract. Freaking rediculous. I explained to her everything that happened and that I had a dated copy of the letter. I asked to speak to a supervisor. She put me on hold & when she came back she told me she spoke to an account manager & that he told her the action was put in for the cancellation, but nothing had been done to stop the payments. She said my last payment should have been in july, & that I was done with my contract. Honestly, how hard is it to take someone's billing info out of you're system?

poor mgmt - temperature issues
Retro moorestown, nj gym has daily evening temperatures of 72 plus degrees.in fact the thermo read 76 degrees in the locker room which was very much cooler than anywhere else. the humidity is also at least 80% every evening during the week. who wants to get on a treadmill at 72 - 75 degrees. is this what we pay for. complaints do nothing as I have already complained. if it wasn't for the non-cancel, non-refund contracts they issue for 1 year and the non-refund trainer contract I also have, I would never step foot in the place. for now I am surviving there but they will not get a recommendation and they will get a non-renewal notice.

scam and fraud tactics to get fees
HI, I had a Health Club membership with Retro Fitness of Jackson, NJ for over a year now. I had moved out of the area, and also recently lost my job back in Feb of 2008 - I did keep my Gym membership for several months afterwards, canceling it on 11/3/2008 with "Laura" who was working the front desk of Retro in Jackson. She asked that I send her a written letter and fax it over that I had moved away, along with a copy of my (new) electric bill showing proof of move. I did all this the same day, called her back and she verified receipt of the fax and noted "...you are all set Mr. Malta, no further fees are due, and wish you all the best - thanks for choosing Retro!". I proceeded to move on with my life, but note I did pay the entire month of dues for November as Laura noted it may be difficult to get the $40 back from ABC Financial, who is their billing arm.
Now, several months later (1/20/09), I am getting harassed by ABC Financial with letters, Emails, and even "crank" phone calls to my house (they call and hang-up !). They are trying to bill me for December and January noting they never received my cancellation, and quote the person I spoke with at ABC Financial noted " ...well the Health clubs often rip up those cancel requests and throw them out...you should have dealt with us directly" - can you believe the audacity of them to say such a thing ?
I have sent ABC Financial all the details, the fax, and spoke with them several times - they are not accepting any of these items, depsite the fact that I have verified "received" faxes, and even taped phone calls from the original request with Retro way back in 11/3/2008 !
ABC Financial is a scam, fraud outfit - designed to ripoff consumers and try to lure them into paying additional fees when they are not required to do so. I am referring my case to the BBB of New Jersey, and also route my Senator and Governor as well to have them banned from doing business in the state of New Jersey - submitting my taped conversations, as well as my fax and written requests / verification.
Note to all - DO NOT deal with any health club or establishment that uses this fraudulent scam company - the entire company is designed to ripoff the hard-working US Citizen, and likely their executives are all "fat cats" driving expensive cars and cheering how they ripped off the most recent tax-paying US citizen.

I had signed up for a membership and personal training at retro fitness. The personal training was over 400 dollars a month. i was stupid for having signed up but thought that I could cancel at any time. I had asked the man who was signing me up if I could and he said with a months notice it was fine. When I tried to cancel my account he said that isnt want he meant and that he was talking about the direct payments and I could cancel that and not my membership which i was bound to for a year. I went on a bike trip and got into a nasty accident and sent them a letter certified that I was injured and was unable to continue with my membership. They put me in collections and it has affected my credit score. This company is the WORST.
My son joined the Retro Fitness in North Plainfield, NJ in May of 2010. He stopped going in approximately January of 2011 and I called to see how to cancel the membership. I was told that he/we were on the hook until the one year anniversary of the membership, May 2011. Since his membership was good, in approximately April of 2011 he went to the new closer Retro Fitness in Edison, NJ. He went maybe 5 or 6 times and stopped. In June I did the certified letter to North Plainfield cancelling the membership. I figured I would be billed for at least one more month, but was not sure. July I was billed $20.00 whatever and a second charge of $17. I figured this would be it, full June and 1/2 July, seemed fair. August came, and I was billed again. Turns out that once he went to a different club, only a few times, his membership was transferred. North Plainfield got the letter and didn't notify me or Edison that he was cancelling or that his membership was transferred. The two charges in July were BOTH clubs billing me. Long story short, it's October, and I'm still being billed! Hopefully this will be it. I would N E V E R join this club again.
I've had similar horrible experiences: withdrawing too much money, not canceling even after I follow procedures, etc. I strongly discourage anyone from joining this gym.
I agree with you CP12, either a Cass action suit, or maybe bring these tatics to the attention of a government official so such tatics are illegal, including the necessary action of having to cancel at least sixty days in advance and having to be charged for 2 billing cycles. I could see the sense of the cancellation method if each location had a limited number of members, but they sell as many memberships as possible. In fact you never about ABC Financial until you cancel, when the funds are withdrawn from your account it withdrawn by Retro Fitness. Both businesses are a horror to deal with.
I followed the requirements of my Retro Fitness membership cancellation to the letter. Sent a certified letter, received a receipt, got charged for two more billing cycles (60 days). About a month after the 60 days, I see ABC Financial has charged my account from a Retro Fitness location I have never been too. I call them and they acknowledge that my membership was properly cancelled and they refund the mistaken charge. The next month I get a charge from ABC Financial for tanning ($11). I call them back and they apologize and refund my money again. The next month I get another charge from ABC Financial for $42. At this point I called my bank (B of A) and had them put a stop on any further charges from ABC Financial and issued a charge dispute. Now I am getting robo calls from ABC Financial saying there is a problem with my account. Both Retro Fitness and ABC Financial should be sued by a class action law suit.

Even though this is a complaint board, I wanted people to know that all gyms are not as deceitful as Retro Fitness. I found a great local gym in Long Branch by the name of Pearl Street. Competitive in price, open 24 hours and staff is great as well as the members. It seems most of the members have had many problems with Retro. If you don't live in the Long Branch, N.J. area, look for a local gym they tend not to be slammers or thieves like the people at Retro, or ABC Financial.
OMG! retro just charged me an additional $20 for a pass due balance that was only $21.39!
I would discourage anyone from joining this place. thet are dishonest, deceitful and have zero customer service because of Tara because she is so "well trained" at her job
Tried to cancel over the phone . Lost job and can not use the facility any longer .Tara in the Farmingdale n y store explained that she was an expert at customer service and was well trained. I asked for the franchise owners phone number and she refused to give it to me because the owners are very busy .
She may be well traind at being a fitness trainer but knows nothing about customer issues or service. This place although it may have new equipment, has zero customer service because of people like Tara.

I tried to cancel my account after about 14 months. True girl behind the counter said in i had to mail a letter. I was with a friend who was a previous member and said he never heard of that. He walked in and cancelled on the spot. I spoke to a handful of other people that did the same. Then she tells me i need to pay for 2 extra months? Why i couldn't use it. I'm bald, would i buy hair gel? No i can't use it. Would someone without a car pay for an oil change?Needless to say i mailed a letter but refused to pay those extra months. Its a friggin scam! Its absurd to ask this! I called to get a manager twice and both times they weren't there. The worker said ahhh don't worry. The phone calls will stop and you won't go into collections. Another lie. I'm in collections and they're charging me interest... Interest on something i never used or agreed to pay! Retro fitness and they're bull### gym are just scam artist s######s!
This company deserves zero stars. I authorized the them to take automated monthly payments from my account. However a year later when I had a death in the family, lost my job and needed to move I informed them of my circumstance. They said I needed to come in person to the office to speak with the manager. I made an appointment and came in. I was told they would adjust my payment briefly and then gave me the run around about sending in a certified letter to them so they could review it and decide whether or not I could cancel my membership. When I called headquarters they said they could not cancel over the phone that I had to contact the gym. They eventually sold my case to a bill collector and reported my bill to the credit Bureau. I'm still fighting them months later. Please stay far away from this business, it is shady and not worth it. I have warned everyone that I could about them. They have lost a customer for life and have horrible customer service. I have contacted the BBB to hopefully bring to light their fraudulent, and unethical practices.
I went into Retro Fitness July to inform the GYM that My wife and I received orders that we would be living New Jersey Sept 2009. I told the manager that I could no longer be a member. I was moving to a new state. I gave him a copy of my report date to Maryland he told me he would send it out to coperate.
I m over with my contract
I have been trying to cancel my membership with Retro Fitness in Middletown since September 2013. A friend of mine is a personal trainer and had given me a workout to do I had asked one of the guys where a certain machine was he was at the counter reading a nnewspaper as if he couldn't be bothered upon seeing my notebook with my workout he began to drill me about where I got my workout who my friend was where she trained he was so rude. I tried to cancel my membership and was told u had to cancel in Manahawkun because my membership had been transfered there the Middletown manager tried to say I was close to $300 behind on payments I had to call ABC Finacial and bring in my bank statement as proof that ivwas NOT $300 dollaes behind on a membership. I went to cancle my membership in Manahawkin and was told I could not cancle because I had to complete my contract which is up in May and I had to give 60 day notice and I have to pay for May and June of 2014 this is nonsense. I hate this gym. I wastold I need a certified letter or a ddoctors note I'm healthy 28 year old female a doctor usnt going to give me a disability note. I want OUT of this contract. I WANT OUT of this HORRIBLE gym that I havent even set foot in since December of 2013. I'm contacting the better business bureau because I'm getting no where with Retro or ABC Finacial.!
Canceling a membership with Retro Fitness reminds me of trying to cancel an AOL account in the early days of the internet. Remember that crap? They are no help at the gym itself. You can sign up there but when you want to cancel they tell you to call a number that you have to write down yourself because they have no cards... and frankly don't give crap. At that number I was left on hold for a while. When I got a person and told them I wanted to cancel I was put on hold again so they could transfer me to a specialist. This persons job was to try to convince me not to cancel and to drag the conversation on as long as possible. After repeatedly stating I want to cancel the membership the person still refused to verbally acknowledge canceling the account on the phone. In the end, a change in card number became the only way I could stop the charges. This company is terrible. I urge you to sign up at the local Y.
Scammers, thieves Retro Fitness shame on you! Why are you making people pay for 2 months of extra membership fees if their canceling . Obviously their wanting to cancel because their financially challenged or your gym sucks! Why can't you just take the rejection and move on. Then you send your collections bullies to harass the people you claim owe you due to your ludicrous contract. We are living in hard economic times. People change your bank account info ASAP.. DONT TAKE THEIR ABUSE or THEIVERY! STOP THIS MADNESS 🚫RETRO FITNESS YOU WILL WEAP WHAT YOU SOLE 👹👹👹👹👹
I AGREE. EFT IN RETRO FITNESS ARE SCAM ARTISTS. DO NOT SIGN ANY MEMBERSHIP WITH THESE CROOKS. I AM TRYING TO CANCEL WITH THEM AFTER ONLY ONE TRAINING SESSION, AND NOW THEY ARE SAYING I HAVE TO PAY 75% OF THE TOTAL I OWE TO CANCEL! CROOKS. I AM GOING TO MY LAWYER. HAS ANYONE HAD ANY SUCCESS WITH GETTING OUT OF THIS CONTRACT?
Retro Fitness is a big SCAM, they are not at all professionals in talking to the customers,
They have billed me $2000 for just taking 1 personal session and after taking $800 in advance for 12 sessions they are asking me to pay all the money for 4 months, now I'm having health issues too so I can't go to the gym and I didn't even step in to the gym in for last 4 months and Retro Fitness is saying they can't cancel my fitness program because its in auto renewal, this is very unethical business practice by EFT group and Retro Fitness.
I'm dealing with this also. About 8 months ago I went into the gym and spoke to the manager about cancelling my membership and she told me I had to pay the two months in order to do it, so I paid her the $40+ dollars and went to another gym and signed up there. I paid over $50 in one day to cancel and restart my gym memberships and then I get slapped in the face with collections saying I owe Retro over $150. Turns out the first membership I had with them was not automatic renewal, so I signed up again and with that new sign up it somehow became automatically renewed(which I did not ask for) and now I have to pay about $200 to a gym that I have not stepped foot in for months and never will again. Completely unfair, I went to a cheaper gym because I didn't have the money to pay for that, they think I have the money to pay for it now? They are completely mistaken. I am community college student that pays for all of her own expenses, I have no way out.
