CharterBank no notification of fraud

When I attempted to use my debit card on a Saturday evening, it was declined. It was when I tried to make a withdrawal from a Charter One ATM about a half-hour later, I learned that my ATM card had been deactivated. When I phoned the ATM number, I learned that someone had made close to $2, 000 in fraudulent purchases from a software firm in Minnesota between 10 & 10:23 the night before - I had received no notification that someone had made these purchases. The bank said that they could do nothing to permit the purchases from being processed and that I had to file a fraud complaint with the software firm. Meanwhile, the bank charged $309 in insufficient funds fees against my account even though the software firm told me that they had refunded the amounts fraudulently charged to my ATM card on a Tuesday afternoon, four days after the fraudulent purchases were made.

I lost around $2000 from my charterone account just today. Some scammer withdrew the money from an ATM nearby and ran my account into negative balance! Went to the police station to register a complaint. According to the Police department of Bensenville, IL, they have received umpteen number of similar complaints in the recent past from Charterone bank account holders, and advised me to contact the bank to see what is going on. When I went to the bank, there are some 20 other people standing in queue at the bank, with similar complaints!. We asked them what is going on, and the bank manager says, apparently, whoever used their Charterone Card to withdraw money from the local charterone atm, fell into a trap, as there was some fraudulent device attached to the ATM, which would record the password and the code from the actual card, to scammers, so they could make a card which would be exactly like mine, and they would be able to withdraw money from my account, using the recorded password! Now, the bank offered me to refund the money, as it was their mistake and the fraud happened at their ATM center. I am not sure how everything is going to pan out, and when will my money would be refunded to me, and whether they would waive off or not, the overdraft fee incurred due to the fraudulent activity. I am keeping my fingers crossed...not at all happy with Charterone.

Same thing happened to me. Charter one isn't my main bank account, but I had about $200 in unauithorized transactions taken out, yet Charter One charged me over $500 in overdraft fees. Since its not my main bank account, I learned of this a MONTH after it happened! My main bank is with ING, the same thing happened with them except when someone tried to make a charge, ING called me right away and notified me about it, I told them it wasn't me, and they took care of the rest, and that was even at 7am, very awesome. But just today I found yet Another unauthorized transaction on my charter one account, the fraud department must really be useless.

CharterBank inactive account fee

Today, August 21, 2008 I received a notification dated August 18, 2008 that effective September 1, 2008 my account which happens to be a Certificate of Deposit that doesn't mature until October, will be charged a $30 fee for being an inactive account. The letter starts out by stating: Dear Customer, We want you to get the most out of your accounts with us... blah, blah, blah, therefore we are going to screw you over by charging you $30 because you haven't deposited any additional funds in your CD since you opened it...and you can't close out your account prior to this date without paying a penalty for early withdrawal. The letter goes on to state that even if the account becomes active again, they will still charge the fee. Also, this amounts to only a 10 day notification of a change in policy. What a crock of crap. I plan on filing complaints with the Federal Reserve Board as well as the State Attorney General. If this were a savings account or a checking account I maybe could understand the fee, but not on a CD account. I have many bank accounts with several different institutions and have never been treated like this.

CharterBank lost credit cards

The level of incompetence is astounding at Charter One! I applied for a credit card through the bank on May 3rd. By June 22nd, I still had not received the card. When I called to find out the location of the card. They said the card was sent to my old address (which I had notified Charter One of the new address every month since January and they still can't get it right). I asked if there was any activity on the card. The "rep" stated that there was NO activity. So, he reported the card lost and stated he would send out a new card to me in 7-10 days. The next day I tried to use my DEBIT card (which I use everyday). It was declined. I called the bank and the "rep" stated the card was reported lost on the 22nd. I asked the rep how this was possible since I was VERY specific in requesting my new CREDIT card to be reissued. He could not answer. So, they issued me a new card. It is now July 6th. When I called to find out where my DEBIT card was, the rep informed me they sent it to my OLD address AGAIN! Keep in mind, every month I receive my bank statements at the right address. Since then, I have canceled my CREDIT card (that I still had yet to receive) and in 2 weeks, after the sale of my new home is complete I will be closing my Checking Account. I will not spend the next 2 years trying to change my address again. I will try and find a bank that can tell the difference between a CREDIT card and a DEBIT card.

One ticked off, soon to be ex-Charter One customer!

CharterBank do not even think of working there

I am a former employee of Charter One Bank in their business banking department. What a horrible place to work, poorly managed, poorly compensated, poorly trained; or well should I say not trained at all... Lets start from the beginning. This company portrayed this job to be everything that it wasn't. I originally took this job as a lender instead I ran around the city looking for checking accounts, not the most ideal thing to be doing especially for a college grad with 13 years experience in banking. Also as a business banker, knowing that I would have a territory of branches I expected to be somewhere near my home. OOPS I thought wrong, the closest I ever got to my home was 31 miles away. I kept hearing promise after promise about getting me closer to my house. Never Happened.

Secondly, this department is so poorly managed that the executives had no idea what was happening from region to region, and they were promoting people into management that first, had NO management experience, and secondly never finished college. This is how bad it got. There was a region-wide conference with business bankers and business banking executives in February. I was planning on going until my grandmother passed away the day before the conference. Upon calling my manager, who I thought would have been sympathetic, I was told and I quote 'IF THERE WAS A DAY THAT I NEEDED YOU TO BE THERE THIS WAS THE DAY.' My mouth dropped. I was even asked, oh can you goto the funeral then meet us in our meeting! I obviously stood my ground and said this is a family affair and I will not be disturbed. She could not make a decision on her own, she called her boss to ask him if it was alright if I attended the funeral of my grand mother. Unbelievable.

Lastly, there is such a lack of training in this job it is unbelievable. I spent maybe a day in training learning products, services, and computer systems. They expected me to be able to produce and function efficiently. Ya Right. I hit the road not knowing what the heck I was doing.

This is just bits and pieces of what goes on at Charter One Bank. I would never work for them again, nor would I ever suggest anyone to ever work there.

I have to agree with you, I worked a Charter One for a short period of time, 4 months to be exact. I couldn't take it and I am sure I am not the only one out there. ! Steer clear of this company unless you enjoy working for and with a completely unprofessional and uneducated group of people. The company is a joke!

CharterBank don't bank at charter one!

I closed out my accounts at Charter One today due to being charged a $25.00 inactivity fee which was deducted from my account because I had not deposited or withdrawn any funds for 60 days. First, I stood in line to have a teller inform me that they don't close accounts and that I would need to sign in at the welcome sign and wait to be called by a banking associate. I waited about 40 minutes before being summoned. I asked what warranted this fee. She needed to call to get the details. I explained that I wanted to close my account due to this fee and due to another earlier fee. The other (so called maintainance) fee was for my account dropping below $1,000 (which it did not even come close to.) She asked me if I checked my account everyday. I said no! She informed me that she always does so and I said because she's a banker and I'm not. She said they'd waive the $25.00 fee if I did not close my account but she couldn't waive the earlier (maintanance) fee because it was too old (2 months.) She told me that if I was a new customer they would not charge those fees due to promotional incentives; but they would not waive the fee if I closed my account since they'd lose my business anyway. I have been banking at this branch (under other bank names) for about 24 years and have never been notified or charged such fees. She said all banks charge them now. I told her to just close my accounts (and get me out of here for good.)

Regretfully, I did not do this sooner. Last spring I needed to make a bank transfer. I waited for at least an hour before I could get any help. And I was the only one waiting! By then I asked to use the rest room and was told there wasn't any. (Funny they used to have one.) The transfer took so long and then was done incorrectly. I needed to network with another bank to walk Charter One through correcting their mistakes! Also, in Oct. I wrote my first overdraft in over 35 years, by writing my check against the wrong account. Charter One sent a letter 4 weeks later informing me of the bad check. By then I had accrued late fees from the company I thought I had paid. (The other company graciously waived them because they know I have a history of prompt payments.)

My feeling is that the customer service is horrible at Charter One. I also feel they have robbed me of money via odd fees and access to my account. Bank accounts aren't truly inactive if the bank has use of or claim to your money. Should have left them sooner.

Don't bank at Charter One!

My husband & I had multiple accounts at our local Charter One branch for years. Finally we couldn't stand the crummy customer service and closed all our accounts and moved our money to a different bank. When I went in person to my branch to close the one account that was in my name only I was told that my account was already closed because I had removed all the funds. While I thought this was not right, because the balance was a 0 for not that long, I was happy to be done with the bank. Fast forward to almost 9 months later - I'm trying to track down a direct deposit that was incorrectly sent to my closed Charter One account. Instead of rejecting the direct deposit, Charter One re-opened my closed account and has been charging me $11.99 a month for the account I closed! They would only refund 2 of the monthly charges, so I'm out almost $50 but it's worth it to never.ever have to do business with this bank again!

This bank is so frustrating, never knowing, when you are going to be charged one oft their stupid ### fees. I first opted out of Charter One savings over draft protection, because they took money out with my knowledge. I then was refunded the $30.00 fee A week later I was overdrawn on my bank account, but not on my savings. It said positive the whole day I checked it online. Just in case I transferred money to my checking. I then had to opt back in the savings overdraft protection, because I was not going to be charged $35 per transaction. I asked the customer service lady when I would next be charged the annual fee she said, "not until December of next year." I was charged today, a month later, I talked to the customer service people, but they could not do anything. I told them they could at least tell there customers when they were going to take money out of my account. They said they cant do that.

Please visit my facebook page I Hate Charter One and share your stories of disaster and scams because of this bank on the largest social network. I would like to spread this as far as I can and create a movement that the bank actually takes notice of and feels embarrassed as a result. You feel so helpless after something like this but sharing your story might help. Maybe you could save someone else from experiences the same terror. I would be very happy to know that I am taking customers from this bank, so help out please.

I totally disagree with all the negative comments. All of these complaints are about "Overdraft Fees" or "Pending charges or deposits", and this is just basic common sense here people! When you use money that you don't have, any bank...and I mean any will charge you fees for fronting the charges that you made on your account. Just like if you borrow money from a cash advance place...you have to pay a FEE to do so! Every business has to make a profit otherwise they wouldn't be successful & would not stay in business for long. Besides that their is not any business that provides a service for FREE, so with that being said...keep a ledger (log of your transactions) and you will not have to worry about paying overdraft fees. If you don't, then that is your fault & you deserve to pay fees. Pretty simple actually!

Charter One imposed a fee on an account that I do not use...I had a little less than 5 bucks in the account and havent used it in ages...so charter one charges me some 5 dollar charge and im in the red by twenty cents or so. So I get the notice in the mail that I have overdrafted, and they like to wait to send these things out, so by now that $6/day is adding up. So I go into the bank pissed off, this isn't the first time the bank has done something like this. I threaten to cancel my accounts (I have a lot more than 5 bucks in the bank) if they do not drop the overdraft fees. The woman instructs me that she cannot personally cancel the fee, she has to fax out a form requesting the cancellation, and even then it isnt guaranteed. This concept is just a scam. You have to wait to find out if they'll drop the charges, but they charge you $6 everyday you are in the red. So ~15 days later they get back to me saying that the charges arent getting dropped. That's 90 more bucks on the overdraft fee. So I payed these thieves the fee that is now about 150 bucks and closed all my accounts. I am urging my family and friends to do the same.

This bank is corrupt. I wish there was more I could do.

I just pulled all three of my accounts from Charter one. They charged over draft fees on an account of mine that was already closed for over a month. Hello, closed, how the heck do you get an overdraft? There is something wrong here. I closed the accounts after I started having the transactions hold for days, then all of a sudden post. Fees then, fees, then fees I didn't even get a notice when it is overdrawn until three days after it is over drawn - thinking I had money in the bank I never was any the wiser. I called and talked to customer service personnel, no help. They stated it was my fault and they could not help it. They told me it was basically the fault of my bookkeeping and I needed to learn how to handle my finances better.
Then when they switched from Visa to Mastercard I never got a card for one of my accounts. I called, "We'll send it miss" is what I was told. Waiting, still no card, waiting some more, nothing. I called again, and again, and again. Finally after call number six with me ranting, raving and cursing out whoever was on the other end at this point I was told there were six cards issued in my name for this account. Six, really? Doesn't that sound a little fishy? I canceled them all and waited yet again for the card. It came finally after three weeks. I activate it, try using it, declined. How humiliating, there was money there. But guess what I had to call again to see what the problem was. Customer service told me everything was fine, no problem. I tried another store, nope declined. Called again, sorry about that you are all set now. Tried a third time, decline. Of course when I got to the third person on this I was like a rabid dog. I was on the phone for an hour and a half with this person. Needless to say I cut up my card, threw it in the fire and wrote checks until I decided on a new bank.
They have raped me out of thousands of dollars, thank god I am no longer banking at this sham of a bank. My advice - tell everyone you know DO NOT to bank there. Unless they are wealthy and can afford to lose thousands a year in fees that are bogus, and like to be treated poorly by the customer service staffers. Tell them good luck for me.
