Despite the solid game foundations, Bethesda's approach to DRM and updates needs improvement to truly satisfy their diverse player base.

Bethesda's platform has been a bit of a mixed bag for me, especially when it comes to the in-game economy. It's like, you go through all the trouble of collecting loot and gear, only to find out that the merchants in the game just don't have enough coin to buy it all off you. It's super frustrating having to wait an entire in-game week just to offload all the stuff you've worked hard to gather. I mean, it's not rocket science, right? Just give the vendors a bit more cash to work with so they can actually buy things from players without us having to twiddle our thumbs waiting for them to restock their funds. It seems like such a simple fix, and I'm not sure why the folks over at Bethesda haven't thought to address this. It's a basic idea of commerce, really – if you want to keep the economy flowing smoothly in your game, you've got to make sure the merchants have enough money to keep up with the players' selling needs.

I've been a fan of Bethesda for a while now but I've got to say, the way they're handling microtransactions and memberships lately is really starting to get on my nerves. I recently purchased Doom Eternal on Steam, and I was already a bit frustrated with the "always online" DRM that Steam has, especially considering that internet connectivity isn't always reliable for many people around the globe. But then, to my surprise, I found out I needed to create a second account for Bethesda.net, and the game kept nagging me for not having it just to track social stats. I mean, come on, it's a single-player campaign, why would I need social stats for that? It's just unnecessary.

I'm seriously considering deleting it now. In my opinion, it's almost like it should be against the law to have to manually set up a firewall rule just to cut down on data usage for a feature that I don't even want and can't disable. A lot of people in developed countries rely on LTE-based Wi-Fi or have to make do with a slow ADSL connection. It's just not right to hog their bandwidth with pointless social data for what is essentially an offline feature.

I could maybe understand the need for a data connection if there was some kind of multiplayer aspect that required it, but until Bethesda removes the social data feature or gives us an option to disable it in the settings, I'm keeping the app blocked with my firewall.

And I'm telling you, if Bethesda releases an update that makes the game unplayable without a Wi-Fi connection, I'm going to find a way to crack it. I've paid for the game, and I believe I have the right to play it without data flow. The developers shouldn't be able to take that away from me.

It's just insane, now with a recent update, even my firewall rule isn't enough—the game just locks up. It feels like a crime, how aggressively they're trying to use up my limited data, and honestly, it feels like this should be challenged legally.

I've reached a point where the only sensible option seems to be to download a pirated version just to bypass this ridiculous aspect of the game that devours data and renders the game unplayable if you can't connect to the internet. I mean, there were a couple of times in the last six months when my internet went down—once because someone actually cut through the telecom cables with a sawzall.

So here I am, contemplating cracking a legally purchased game because the DRM has become so invasive that it feels like a crime to leave it as is. I should be able to enjoy the game I bought at any time, with or without an internet connection.

I deem it should be illegal to have to create a manual firewall rule to reduce data usage for an unwanted feature with no "disable" button as a large fraction of the first world has LTE based wifi or uses a slow ADSL line that should not be legally clogged with meaningless social data for a normally offline feature
Maybe if you added some form of multiplayer you could re-enable data connections just for that but until you remove social data as a feature I am unable to disable in settings it will remain a firewalled app
If you push an update that stops the game working without wifi I will crack it

I am now at the point where the only rational choice is to download a pirate crack to destroy this useless aspect of the game that eats at data and breaks the game if you can't connect to the internet like when my internet was down for several hours twice in the past 6 months first time due to somebody literally taking a sawzall to telecommunications cables
