In August this year I came across Aspect Maintenance after looking in my area for a plumber to re-seal a shower base and investigate an issue with my basin in my bathroom. After not having much luck with several plumbers, I called Aspect and was able to book in a date for the engineer to visit. The first red flag was that I was asked to give my payment details. What wasn't clear was that they would charge for the callout whether or not I wanted them to go ahead with the job or not.

When the appointment day came, the plumber arrived and he couldn't have been nicer to begin with. He took a look at my bathroom (only 4 years old and in good condition - the shower just needed resealing) and he told me it was going to take all day and would cost about £800! I was shocked as I am a property manager and regularly get showers resealed in Watford for less than £200. And I also wasn't impressed with the solution he had for the basin. So I asked him to quote just for the shower reseal and he said about £600 and it would take 4 hours to remove all the existing sealant etc. So now Im thinking he is either incredibly bad at his job, or he is just charging as much as he can get away with. I told him my budget is £200 and I cannot afford any more (which is true) he shrugged and told me that Aspect are one of the more expensive companies!

I then called the company while he was still in my flat to say that I was not happy with the amount I was being quoted. She put me through to a manager who completely stood by their technician (surprise surprise). When I said that I do not therefore want to go ahead, they told me that they would still charge me for the callout. I told them that I would not pay this because I believe that they are deliberately overcharging! I told him not to charge it to my card as I was going to seek legal advice. He told me they wont charge me until the issue was resolved.

However, as they already had my bank details, they went ahead and charged me £102.60 for the visit while I was still on the phone to them. I was shocked. £102.60 FOR DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING EXCEPT MAKE A RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED QUOTE!

I got the shower resealed by another contractor - it cost £168! I have another contractor coming to sort out my basin for less than £200 (which I had to hold off as I couldnt afford to do it before) and a much simpler and more effective solution than the one Aspect engineer came up with!

I complained to Citizens advice and Trading standards about ASPECT but effectively there is little I can do as they technically can get away with it in their terms and conditions. I was simply given a Cancel Project letter to send to ASPECT, who basically ignored the letter. Ordinary consumers are being robbed by unethical contractors like ASPECT!

So I would warn anyone considering calling them - DONT!

Claimed loss: £102.60 - for absolutely nothing which meant that I had to borrow some money to get the job done a couple of weeks later for £168!

Desired outcome: My money back! Companies like ASPECT should not permitted to charge people for callouts when they give overpriced quotes! No matter what their T&Cs say!
