misleading and dishonest
I got a job w/ American Income and turns out they are the most misleading company I've ever come across. They first tell you they have very qualified leads and make you believe these leads totally know what this is about. When asked what this is all about we were told to tell them they're receiving items at no cost to them. This way the lead would actually set an appointment. But when the agent gets to the house they try to sell them life insurance.
American Income also says your an Independent Contractor. Two to three days out of the week we were required to drive up to the office to make calls and set appointments. We weren't able to leave until we had at least eight appointments for each of the next two days. And considering the actual quality of their leads that could take up to six hours... Free labor.
Also they assign you a mentor that is supposed to just be there for you to learn from and lean on. They call you all day long to check up on you and make sure your working. If you had an appointment that didn't show they have you knock on peoples doors that you couldn't get a hold of on the phone. Half the time the people didn't even live their anymore. All of this had to be logged ( down to the minute) so they can see what you did that day.
Basically you work six days a week... far from independent huh?

employment opportunity there
Dear Sir or Ma'am,
I'm writing because of the very disappointing opportunity I just completed with AIL.
I spent considerable time and money to prepare for a chance to work for your company.
Study, gasoline, testing, hours in training. Two months of time.
I did, however, meet your company standards at each level and was assigned leads as an Agent.
After just THREE WEEKS, I was fired for failing to meet quotas.
That's right, THREE WEEKS.
To say that I was treated unfairly and unprofessionally by your Ohio is a considerable understatement.
Worse, others at that office are now taking credit for my work. Two of my sales have been taken. Leads I cultivated for three weeks are now going to be pocketed by someone else there.
You call yourself ' a company for the working man and his family ', but I am also such a person. You certainly did not stand by me. Three weeks is no kind of fair opportunity for any applicant. I can only now discourage anyone I know from having any interaction with your Ohio office.
If I were in your shoes, I would take this complaint and these reported events seriously. But, at this point, I would find that surprising.
I will never forget the poor, unprofessional manner in which I was treated by your company.

Somebody call the paper.
Please don't let them get away with this. They robbed you of time, ideas, leads & took your sales income. I bet you had to make a list of everyone you knew to call and network with etc. Pumped your contacts, your database . It's Sales rape !
DO something about it.
I had a call to day from this company in Riverside Calif, They told me that they received my resume through Monster and it seemed to have all the qualifications that they were looking for. They also asked me if I had any managerial experience. They proceeded to tell me that this is a company that sells insurance to the unions, when I asked for more detail about the company and if this is a commission based or hourly and they refused to let me know, stated that there manager would not take the time to call me with the information. Thank God I found this website!
not a real job they $ charge
American income life insurance is a total fraud!!! Dont even bother with that company if u are looking for a job their nothing but liars and hypocrites, the managers tell u ories and not the truth until you do ur own research about the bad reputation that the comapny has with its employees. A company that charges u for the training its a fraud and a waste...

I got the same call from a hr rep claiming they saw my resume online. I bit because i like the others needed a job as quickly as possible. I was suspious as well when she said she could give me the details of the position, after i stated i was not interested in sales or telemarking. I set the interview a whole day away to goggle the name and i can across these complaints posted.
Thanks to all who posted. You saved me time and money!
illegal operation according to the irs
Illegal operation according to irs code. Forced to run dead leads at your expense. Not legal for 1099 employees.
"Rainfire" is a perfect example of another kool-aid drinker for AIL. She's probably young (in her 20's) without much more than a high school education. If I'm wrong about that, then shame on you. As an adult you should know better than post these type of comments. Just because someone (and by someone, most everyone on these forums) had a bad experience with AIL does not make them lazy or a failure. Most of the blame should go to AIL. I really don't care if you agree or not, keep posting though. Each comment you place on here shows everyone the type of character that AIL looks for in its employees. I actually feel sorry for you. Oh, Torchmark never has been a Fortune 500 company despite what they tell you.
50 years in business and the IRS still has not said one word. Who do you justify your ridiculous comments?
Wow. What a sad soul. Another under acheiver trying to influence the general population to ease the pain of his failures. This is a total and complete lie. I am amazed by some of the garbage people are allowed to post on the internet. When a person accepts a job for 100% commission, they have no one to blame for their inability to succeed but themselves. Its hard to look at oneself in the mirror and say, "I am a failure because I did not use my time or resource correctly." It would be much easier to blame an entire company for one's failure. For those of us who are intelligent, I will say this, the day you let the internet dictate your success and your destiny is the day you have surrendered your own ability to think for yourself. Never let anyone's poor experience keep you from achieving your goals. Remember that internet garbage is a one sided story. You may be agreeing with a lunatic . Who knows why this person was not successful. Perhaps he had anger management issues that could not be controlled. Or maybe, he was not as bright as he thought he was and would do better working as a w2 employee. Whatever the reason, it takes an angry vain person to post such negative garbage with the sole purpose of keeping you from realizing your ability. I would like to invite all readers to the ailife.com website to view the increase in stock and client base. I love the company that I work for and the clients that I serve. They are happy with their products and come from all different walks and backgrounds. From the businessman to the farm hand, I will always be there for you to handle your insurance needs. May God bless you.
1099 employees shouldn't be a red flag, just how AIL "interprets" its agents as 1099 employees. IRS clearly states that an Independent Contractor(s) are not required to show up to mandatory meetings and be forced join unions. Most people have a problem with AIL in how they treat their agents and their definition of an independent contractor/employee relationship. Basically you are an Independent Contractor with AIL when it is convenient for them to be so, otherwise they force you into an employee/employer relationship cause it is best for AIL at that moment.
Some construction jobs are 1099.
Tax preparers( or better yet CPA) 1099
cosmetologists 1099 in a lot of respects some times W2 and sometimes 1040
Licensed nurses 1099
any mucisian (technically) 1099
Writers 1099
I could go on for a while, but i think that's enough. I dont think that just because one is a 1099 employee, it should be a "big red flag"
Plus any job that requires you to file out a 1099, and considers you an "independent contractor", is a big red flag. I've done sales, and was good at it, but now I'm over the whole having your source of income be solely based on not how hard you work, but on how many sales you generate. Plus, the simple fact that they called me out of the blue, and didn't feel the need to give me a synopsis of what I was interviewing for, really brought questions to my head. They maybe classified as a legitimate agency, but I think we can all see that there practices are morally compromised.
Well I had an interview for AIL tomorrow at 9:30, but I wanted to do my research so I can come into the interview well prepared. But after reading the overwhelming amounts of disclaimers, I think I'm just going to cancel the interview, and spend the rest of this night watching movies...thanks for saving me gas.
If you don't have a clue how to sell into a low pressure environment, and you do want it handed to you on a plate ... then join the queue with the unemployed. My personal experience with AIL was $85, 000 in my first part year, with minimal poor leads. Having said that I did use their system to source most of my leads myself and make my own appointments. Still a satisfactory result for only 35 to 45 hours a week. And I was never humiliated by my manager for not doing a good enough job!
Forced to run dead leads at your expense? How so?
The agents don't pay a penny for the leads...
The leads are provided for free by the company.
Running a dead lead? I'm not exactly sure what the connotation to that was but a dead lead i'm guessing are people who just have a name no address no number no city and no state.
considering "dead" would essentially mean there is nothing YOU can do.
Sometimes their numbers are bad.
Knock on their door.
Sometimes they have moved, so the number and address is bad
There's this amazing website called super pages, try it.
The company gives them to you for free.
Any other insurance industry makes you pay 2-50 dollars or more, per lead. which 9 times out of 10 times, are way worse.
they expect too much
I too interviewed with American Income Life. They did not inform me until the interview that this would be a commission only position. Since I was desperate for a job, I went through with the interview, was hired and started training. The first two weeks after training I worked hard with my supervisor and I made great money. But once I was done with trainging they expected me to continue to work 5-7 days a week to make a great income. I am like most of you where I got a salary most of my life whether I worked hard or not. With American Income you only make money if you work hard, if you sit around, you make NOTHING. I do not think it is fair that I have to push myself to make money!
Are you freaking kidding me?! This can't be a legit complaint...I'm a manager with AIL and maybe it's cuz I am a workhorse and think that you should get paid for how hard you work but you're complaining about having to work 7 days a week? Hell if there were 10 days in a week I would try and work 11! I've had plenty of positions in my life and I feel like salary positions are the ones we should be complaining about. Think about it. You bust your balls (if you're like me) to get your job done quickly and efficiently while joe blow just goes through the motions until payday. Checks come out and you have the same paycheck. How could that not piss you off?! I just don't understand some people...but hey I guess somebody's gotta take advantage of that minimum wage ...
Are you serious?! I am shocked that people actually think like you. I take that back.. I have met lazy bums before. I am an American income manager and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. This is THE greatest opportunity I've come across in my entire professional career. I find it relieving that it is performance based. Because personally, I am a VERY hard worker and expect to be paid as such. In my other salary jobs I would bust my ### just because that's how I'm wired, while joe blow that worked there too would slack off and just go through the motions and at the end of the week we get paid the same. Not cool. I have a feeling you would be my Joe blow... And that my friend, is NOT, let me repeat that...is NOT the type of person AIL wants to be associated with. So thank you for weening yourself out. And please don't ever talk bad about my family (cuz that's just what we are) again.
I don't know why everybody should come down on this fellow, clearly he was a civil servant in his last job and did not have to work at all to get great money and benefit's...lol
You sound like the laziest person alive. You must have had everything handed to your your whole life! Please save everyone's time for reading relevant blogs. Having to work hard for what you want is not a complaint, its an excuse!
Are you serious? Did you just say you don't believe you just said you don't think you should work hard to earn money. Go collect welfare!
I hope to God that this is a joke...
Is this really a legitimate complaint?!
"...once I was done with trainging they expected me to continue to work 5-7 days a week to make a great income. I am like most of you where I got a salary most of my life whether I worked hard or not. With American Income you only make money if you work hard, if you sit around, you make NOTHING. I do not think it is fair that I have to push myself to make money!"
A company that pays you great money for just two weeks of work and doesn't expect you to work hard? Where are you from? I don't mean to be offensive in any way, but this is just upsetting. that the 'average' american has absolutely no work ethic, absolutely no self worth.
You should have to push yourself to make [great] money. If you wanted to make okay or just enough money to survive, then what excited you the most about this opportunity?
Anyone who goes in for an interview is told it is commissions, it requires hard work and a strong work ethic, if you don't have the last two, this is not a position for you.
Darn stuff- with that same mentality that you have as the OP, that is proof why most people don't work out in AIL. They don't want to put in work to make good money, they feel it should be spoon fed to them or that they shouldn't have to work hard to make a great living.
I pray that future generations don't have this same idea of how america is and should be. America was built on sales, and hard work. Selling ideas that freedom and less oppression was the way to go that the freedom to believe in whichever religion you want to believe is right. The hard work put in to establishing colonies and government and systems. It's been lost in a sea of internet/ entertainment/ porn and instant gratification.
I attended a job fair and somehow American life got ahold of my resume, and they sent me about 15 emails and called a few times trying to get me to set up an interview. I cannot see myself selling insurance, and I was getting kind of wary of their persistance, seeing that I don't have any experience selling insurance. After reading your post, I think I'll let this "opportunity" pass me by. Thanks Randy
job opportunities
I have been unemployed for almost seven months. My resume is posted on several web-sites. I receive a call about managing an office for a insurance company. They were pretty sketching on the phone about the position. I scheduled an interview and went in. When I get there I am greeted by a young lady sitting behind a desk. I noticed right away that this was not a typical office. No computer or phone on her desk, not much but clipboards, blank resumes and a sign-in sheet. I signed in only filled out a small portion of the application since I had my resume, as she directed me to do. In just a few minutes a gentleman came out of a office and asked me to come in. We sat down he told me how lucky I was and how they had picked my resume out of 1000's. Then he took me to small conference room where, along with others, I would be given a description of the job. Afterward there would be another personal interview. There were about eight of us that sat and listened about how great it is to work for their company. How in just a few years we could be making $100, 000 if we were really dedicated. Then started taking people back for their second personal interview. I was the third person to go in. I was told that since I was more mature they would like me to be a manager in charge of training others. Then they slide a piece of paper over and asked me to fill it out with my credit card information to pay for the class to get a State Insurance License, which was $280 and I would also have to purchase a lap-top computer if I didn't already have one. I told the guy that I would like to think about it and I had another interview across town that I needed to get to. He stated I should go ahead and fill out the slip so I wouldn't have to come back. I told him again that I wanted to think about it. He then told me I neede to be back before 4pm or he would have to give the position to someone else. I said okay and left. The more I got to thinking about it the thought came up..."if it is to good to be true...it probably isn't true". Then I thought about the young woman that was standing in front of the desk as I was leaving. It dawned on to me that the guy that had been talking to me had told the person behind the desk (now a young man in a suit) not to let her leave until she had "the slip of paper" filled out. The more I thought about it the "shifty-er" the whole office seemed. A desk in every office a picture or two and a company banner. No phones, post it notes, pens and nothing personal existed in any of the offices. I did not go back or call them back. When I got home I found the other comments on this website. I thank God I did not fill out that "slip of paper" with my credit card information on it.

I replied to a craigslist ad and immediately got a call saying they saw my resume on Monster, and I would be a perfect fit? First Red Flag, there was a lot of background noise and I could tell he was in a call center environment to say the least. He too mentioned a Mr. Guzman which I have seen in previous comments. Mr. Guzman expects two references. Please add those to your resume and resubmit it. Hmmm...I told him I would just email him and he can provide those to Mr. Guzman, he wanted me to bring a fresh copy of my resume. I asked him to print one for him as I had no printer and the interview was scheduled for early the next morning. He hesitated and fumbled around and finally said he would. He also told me to dress professionally. I said what? (it was rather insulting) and he said, you know dress to impress. I asked him for directions and he couldn't provide them. This was to work with union benefits, where the new union person gets information and they call if they are interested. I am very disappointed, however not surprised. Sad state of affairs we live in. Some people may be naturals, bet you end up a recruiter to keep the ponzi scheme alive. Thanks everyone for letting me know and say a little prayer for me and my children.
I just got the phone call for these people this morning. For one they didn't ask about my background..and the woman didn't even tell me what the position was for. Just that I would be a perfect fit for their company. Asked if she could email me the information and there was a pause and then she goes on to tell me that she will text me the address and everything. Ok...that is a little odd...what if the number on my resume was for a home phone. But whatever. She sends me the text which has an address and everything. I then ask her to clarify what this position was hiring for and she tells me it is for Sales Customer Service Development Programming and Leadership (what even is that?). To which I respond - I am a graphic designer and currently not looking to change career paths. Like many of you I am curious about why I would be a perfect fit...for something that is not even remotely in my field = I am so glad I looked up the information and found this site or I would have wasted time and gas on driving out to them!
I went to the interview and did the training. I made about $800 a week while in training and am now out of training and making about $1000 a week pretty consistently. You do have to pay for a class to get the license but after your first week out of training you are reimbursed for expenses including money for the laptop even if you already have one. I was unemployed for over a year and they were the first people to give me a chance and I am able to provide for my family now thanks to them. also for the guy upset because he is a soldier, think about this when 9/11 happened American income life insurance company was the only company to pay death benefits to their policy holders. All the other companies refused to pay because it was an act of terrorism. So you might need to get your facts straight before bashing a company. We work with State police, fire fighters, teachers, etc. the back bone of America and we do handle all of their benefits, so you do have to have an insurance license in order to go over these benefits with the people that they get through their respective organization. Again all you people are passing judgement before you have the facts. And a lot of you have missed an opportunity. The good news is, is that I did not miss out.
TORCHMARK AMERICAN INCOME LIFE SURACE SMITH ALL A SCAM. I am unemployed. Received call - "Our CEO saw your resume and was very impressed, you meet all our qualifications for our Fortune 300 company and also top OH best place to work (Torchmark) and we want to meet with you right away." Needless to say, my resume, albeit impressive, is in another class - I have lots of sales, but it is in marketing now.
Then she proceeded to ask me what kind of sales experience I had. If he had seen my resume, then why was she asking me about sales? Secondly, she NEVER mentioned Surace-Smith - or AIL - and I didn't know about either of these until I walked in the door. In fact, I checked for the best place to work list, and never found Torchmark. Did my research on Torchmark and was already hesitant.
Once I got to the interview, I was hussled into a room with about 25-30 other people to watch a "rah-rah" video and then listen to a spiel about why it is the best place to work. Quite frankly, if it really is, then why do they have to sell it so hard? I think it is a huge scam. Also, they are busy taking notes on us (they have cameras in the room) and monitoring our behavior, so they know who they want to hire. I was a bit of a rabble-rouser, so I won't be getting a call back for sure. I got the room in a bit of an uproar before they came in for the presentation...haha.
I had a rude lady call me from American Income. I asked her to email me the details regarding the job. I told her that since I didn't apply for any job with this company I would need further information regarding the position in email. She got rude and told me that I don't think you are serious about finding employment. Then she hung up. I was just thinking no dear I will never want to work for a scam company, so I just saved myself the bother of going in for an interview, not to mention gas and my precious time to seek actual employment.
I knew something was up when my boyfriend kept getting calls from this company for a job. Since he was at work, I took the messages. Then a few days later, that same company Surface-Smith called me for an interview. I asked questions and I never got a straight answer. They set up my interview for Friday morning. Something told me to research this company and I am so glad I did. I do not have time to waste, I'm looking for a real job opportunity that does not involve sales. I would like to thank everyone for sharing your stories. It saved me time, energy and disappointment.
Thank God I decided to check out the company. The website for them did not seem real / fake more like it. I am looking for a real job - an honest one not to scam people or to be scammed. I am a single mother - who like so many have had a really hard time, struggling day to keep my home. Finally - as of 2 weeks ago - I no longer have that home - the home my kids grew up in.
Then I get this call - I had in fact posted my resume - so I thought "Oh My Gosh - finally a break" ... but then I thought, wait something didn't feel right. So I Googled - and Thank God that I did not waste my time or my gas to drive to Lexington, KY.
Thank you everyone for sharing so people like me know in advance what these people are doing.
I just got a call from a "recruiter" this morning. By the end of the interview, the guy told me " you know what, this isn't going to be a good fit". Probably because I asked how I got paid, and what the job actually entails. Sounded to good to be true, and it was.
just so you guys all know, i went through the interview process... you don't need anyone under you to make money. You sell life insurance to families that need it. I didn't need a single person under me in order to do that..
Surface-Smith managers need to "REAQUAINT" themselves with EEOC laws. This is a typical "BODY FACTORY" type of employment. Your told you will work hard and make gazillions of dollars. This agency has NO INTEGRITY to their employee's whatsoever. Being raised in a family whose livelihood was insurance sales, I can tell you this agency is bottom line Snake Oil salesman. The only thing they care about is fattening their own wallets at the victims who are stupid enough to believe their MIRAGE they sell to prospective job seekers. The worst thing is they PROFESS to be Christians...I ask of what religion? Do yourself a favor... DO NOT WORK FOR THESE PEOPLE...you will be used up...abused and thrown away like trash. Note to Surface-Smith study this web page...people are coming for you!http://www.eeoc.gov/employees/
One thing I have learned in life...never I repeat never underestimate who your previous employees are connected with.
job
How do you know if the JOB that you have interview for at American Income Life is VALID?
Here is HOW..
I submitted my resume for an ENTRY LEVEL/MANAGMENT position here in Middlebury, CT. I DO have insurance experiance. Have had experiance since "07". Went in and it was like a class room full of people. And the "employee" was talking to us about how much money we can make. I left their thinking it was a great chance for me to work for a great company and a great chance to make some CASH. That was until my Husband ( just for HA HA's) sent in his resume too. Mind you that the position is for Insurance. My husband is an HVAC TECH. ( Nothing to do with ) insurance. His resume states nothing about experiance in the insurance industry, nothing ever remotly close to what the position was for.
GUESS WHAT...
They called him and told him that, they would like to set up an interview right away because he has ALL the qualifications to be MANAGEMENT. He has never delt with insurance before. So if your thinkin that this is a great chance. Think again!
I have a job interview there in the morning. I am a recent graduate of Business Management, so of course I was excited to have the opportunity. Then red bells started to ring in my head due to a previous experience from a job in Denver, Colorado that turned out to be a scam also. I decided to investigate before I waste my time and my gas. To my surprise my warnings looks as if they were right. My question is who do you report businesses like this to? Why are they still operating? We need to report them, because this is ridiculous.
I once sent my resume to a few places and never heard from any of them but this slimy outfit keeps calling me...just happened again and in the middle of her last sentence I picked up only to hear her hanging up and when I called back no one was there and no way to leave a message. They also have no email. They hacked my privacy to get my number in the first place and they don't even know I have NO qualifications for this work. I don't think they want anybody "qualified" because from what info I have gathered the work is cold calling, banging on people's doors and NO salary. And MOST people never break into the next phase, which is probably that of "slave-manager". Avoid this sleazy cesspool like the PLAGUE!
I sent my resume to a few places and never heard from any of the jobs I applied to but this sleazy outfit never stops calling me. I have NO insurance experience and wouldn't want to. I have heard they treat people like slaves and anyone who can survive that may have a fighting chance to scrape up into something else. I have also heard they will take ANY warm body. They just called me now and I picked up in the middle of her last sentence and not only didn't she hear me but I called back immediately only to discover that no one was there (surprise surprise) and they don't take messages. SCAM alarm right there. Avoid this crooked cesspool like the plague!

AIL embraces a meritocratic philosophy just like democracy, but just like democracy, AIL retains a small percent of successful people on top of the ladder. It is, in other words, a microcosm of our nation. Arguing that your success depends upon your efforts, motivation, ambition or whatever is not completely true when not everyone gets the same amount of preparation or training. There may be unlimited opportunities but there is limited support. It is a company of opportunities but not a company of equal opportunities, but if you recall, they never promise you equal opportunities, so i cannot call them liars. A general manger, for instance, can have up to 10 or 20 regular agents, so think about how much support can each agent receive from one single person. Even with supervising agents it is insufficient to prepare regular agents properly and effectively. You certainly cannot expect all people to hustle in a way that a salesperson must do. Success is often a slow process and the problem here is that many new agents in AIL have families to sustain and cannot wait for two months or even three to get paid. Subsequently as they see this shadowy panorama they quit AIL and remain jobless thereafter. In addition, most people enter with no selling experience. Now let me share some observations; If you are a latino you will want to sell insurance to latinos who can sympathize with you, but we latinos normally lack the money and hardly believe in the importance of life insurance, so you will sale little, if any. If you're african american you will want to sell to african americans who actually do understand the importance of life insurance, however the resources are normally limited also. Of course i did witness successful agents who were culturally diverse but i ignore for how long their success lasted. What is am arguing by sharing these observations is that culture is an element that may either further or hold back your opportunities to succeed. I cannot deny that i did develop numerous skills throughout the 6 months i worked for them. I sympathize with the complaints, however, i feel neutral in relation to this topic because indeed there may be, just like they promise, unlimited opportunities but they never promise equal opportunities. I did not succeed as i wanted to but i understand that selling is not a strength of mine. I joined AIL because i was brainwashed about the unlimited opportunities but they never specified that this whole deal was about selling until i began my training. I decided to give it a try but wasn't very effective at selling in part because i am anticapitalist and in order to succeed in sales you need to have a rather cold heart when taking money out of lower income families. I felt i was rather hurting them financially instead of helping them and my purposes in life are more humanitarian. It is true that having life insurance will help them save money when losing a loved one, however the problem is that it is hard to educate people on life insurance within a short time frame, especially when you have not been TRAINED PROPERLY. People complain because they expect positive results but in order to get positive results you need more than just selling skills; you need support and good leads, and the leads in real life translate into the resources a family can provide to you as you grow up. A teacher cannot blame students for their poor academic skills when the majority belong to disadvantaged minorities whose children seldom can inherit any academic skills from their parents; the most successful students normally have parents with rich educational backgrounds. I believe therefore that AIL needs to work on better addressing the needs of new agents and thus i firmly believe that the negative critics will fall.
You get paid and are offered, also work in positions that you deserve. Plain and simple. Negative feedback is always spread like wild fire, and well positive feed back is always expressed by the profit amount. This company wouldn't exist if it didn't do well by its clientele or the actual employees. In every organization there are people who felt mislead, mistreated and blah blah blah because that's just human nature.
Sales is sales plain and simple. It's not meant for everyone. If you do not have a positive mindset and the motivation, ambition, and disciple to do it, you will fail.
Worst company Ever
American is a pyramid scheme worst company in the World, it a Hole in the Wall
I feel that people have the right to form their own views. I can say that reading all of these bad reviews I wonder two things. Why take on the position knowing you will actually have to work hard. Two complaining about the position when you fail to do so. Life is what you make it. People are so focused on the what's in it for me they have become lazy. You want a base pay go work for a fast food restaurant. You want great income work on commission. Example car sales, marketing, or insurance. Commission careers set people a apart. Either you got the ability or you don't. Do not ruin someone else's chance due to your lacking in the development of yourself. Nor a company because you didn't make it.
Glad I researched this company first. I too was invited to an "interview", which actually sounded a lot like a sales pitch rather than an actual opportunity . I will not be attending this "interview" and would like to thank all the people who shared their experience with this company. Time is money thank you for the warning and saving me my time and money. Troy, Michigan.
I am a former employee who worked for AIL from October 2010 through the end of November 2010 at the Woodridge, IL office under the ownership of Bob Olson. Olson actually was a somewhat decent guy, however his "underlings" were and are complete ### of the Earth. First off, I had to purchase my own laptop and pay for it out of pocket, without any reimbursement, just in order to get the job. Then I had to load their crappy computer program, which even after I removed it, has crippled my computer and slowed it down to turtle-like speeds. Then there was the "training." I use that word rather loosely because were weren't being trained to sell insurance at all. It was all about how to lie to the customer to get them to do what you wanted and bilk them out of hundreds of dollars of their money so that AIL could make money. Half the time, the person who was supposed to be leading the training session wouldn't even show up so we had to sit there and waste time. By the end of the two weeks, my training class of 15 people was down to 4 people. The people training us didn't care if we understood anything since they were in such a rush to get us out on the street.
Next were the people that supposedly held positions of power there. I am not afraid at all to name these people because I want everyone who reads this to know what sleazy ### they were. Their names are Mandus Buckle, Cherie Adams, and Matthew Barrion to name a few. Ms. Adams would frequently get up on her high and mighty horse and belittle the rest of us who weren't as good at lying and stealing as she was during out afternoon meetings. She often told us that we needed to talk to our inner city clients in a "ghetto" or "black" manner, even though Ms. Adams herself is African-American. I found this particularly off-putting. Then there was Mandus Buckle, my boss. This guy was, and still is, an egomaniacal narcissist and steroid abuser who propositioned himself to every attractive female employee that worked there with the promise of more money and better leads if they slept with him. His boorish behavior was absolutely disgusting! Often times this clown would single me out during meetings and humiliate me in front of my coworkers. When AIL let me go, which was a blessing in disguise, this spineless coward didn't even have the stones to look me in the face when he fired me -- instead he sat with his back to me the entire time like he was some sort of big shot or something. I was extremely pleased to hear from my former up-line manager, the one decent human being that worked there, that Mandus Buckle was later fired due to an overwhelming amount of sexual harassment claims from various female employees.
Now on to the actual job itself. The lead packs that we were given often times was made up of leads that were well over 2 years old that were simply union workers that filled out a card requesting that we enroll them in their free benefits which was a $3000 accidental death and dismemberment policy. Once we were in their homes, however, we were to show them the fancy pants lap top presentation and try to get them to hand over their personal checking account information to purchase an outrageously priced $30K whole life policy. In addition to this, I spent numerous hours of my day in a very dangerous area of the West Side of Chicago "door-knocking" to set up potential future appointments and meeting with prospective clients, most of which were broke to begin with. There were many nights that I put myself in danger driving and walking alone through these neighborhoods in the hopes that the crackhead that I set an appointment with on Monday was not going to blow me off that Wednesday when I showed up for the appointment. Several of my coworkers even had their cars broken into while they were on appointments. I honestly felt that I needed to carry some sort of weapon to ensure my safety while performing my job. Not exactly a great working environment if you know what I mean.
I have since went on to work for a very successful and legitimate insurance brokerage and I must say that there are WAY better opportunities that AIL out there. Do not listen to the propaganda from idiots like Rainfire or michaelAIL. They are simply spewing the company lines and I have seen Rainfire post the same thing on several other links. They will try to tell you that YOU are lazy or unmotivated or not "AIL material" and that is why the people who have made these legitimate complaints have not succeeded at AIL. DO NOT BELIEVE IT! It is all [censored]! Please people, as a former employee, STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY! They are NO GOOD!
I'm sorry, but the people on here that are taking UP for AIL, are the ones scamming people. I have been doing booking for 4 weeks now and still have not been paid for the last 2 weeks, nor have I been paid for the booking I did for the "boss" of the office here. All I have heard is one excuse after the other! They are making money and the agent I book for gets paid to pay me, but she still can't pay me? And I too was offered the hiring manager postition, which now I'm sure was just another scam to keep me working for free, thinking I would be getting this big promotion, right? Just there way of keeping me quiet...woulkdn't wanna loose my promotion, yeah...right! This company is nothing but a big scam! I would love to join the class action law-suit against them. They don't care if you get paid, as long as they do!
I think that most of the anger comes from being told that: people will be in business for themselves and making their own schedule, getting leads that people sent in asking for insurance, and making a lot of money very quickly. Did I miss anything? I use to train new recruits and those who left always said that the job was not what was described to them. I think the immature attitude of some of the agents who defend AIL doesn't help matters. You can't really build credibility with insults and sarcasm.
Will all of the miserable people plesae stand up, so we can get together and feel sorry for ourselves and blame someone else for our missed opportunities. Let's join together with individuals who may be mentally insane or mentally challenged. Lets trust people we never met before. Lets believe in the writings that we read on the internet everyday. Lets base our entire lives on one persons experience.
May God bless you.
scam
I was told to come to an interview in Springfield, IL and dress professionally and all that as well. When I called to cancel my interview I did reach a voicemail, but not an actual person, which I found odd. This company is definitely fishy...I'm glad I researched it before I drove all the way there to interview for a scam.
Do Not Go To An Interview FOR THIS COMPANY!
Lauren
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
The company hires aggressively with little regard for suitability for the job.
Despite their claims, all positions offered with AIL will start you off in sales at the very least.
In my local agency, there were a few 'secretaries' and 'HR' persons, but their jobs consisted mainly of running interference on disgruntled employees and customers alike.
The primary issue with the company is the old "Over sell, Under Deliver" policy they seem to stand by:
They promise quality leads - 25 a week - FALSE
The leads can be several years old, or be incorrect information, or be people fed up with being harassed by AIL.
While there may be some diamonds in the rough, their model of only using union 'leads' limits a given salesman to luck of the draw.
Also, if your sales are beneath 2, 000$ a week. You are denied leads period, and forced to work off the very old leads consisting of bad phone numbers, bad addresses, and dead people (No joke) The whole situation seems to be a deliberate snowball effect on the sales force to drive them to resign.
They promise a minimal income of 500$ + 200$ for fuel courtesy of the company.(weekly) - FALSE
In NS, the agency SGA promises that regardless of your commissions in a given week, AIL will insure that you make 500$ minimal per week, and not only that but supply 200$ for a fuel and cell expense, so long as you provide slips and receipts proving you were in the field seeing clients/leads. The best you get is a little bonus of 167$, which you only get if you SELL 1500$ a week.
Seeing as the SGA used the word "salary" frequently for the 500$, it is clear their hirers have little regards for truth.
It's commission only, and while that isnt bad per say, it's not for everyone. AIL uses the word "salary" a lot to describe compensation. In fact, their job bank ads typically say "Salary: 40, 000-60, 000 annual" When really "renumeration based on commission" is the most accurate statement. Most people make < 26, 000$ their first year as an interesting tidbit.
Strong Business Ethics and a Company trusted by the Community - False -
There is next to no regulation in AIL. 'Managers' or SAs and GAs have no leashes or regulatory obligations in controlling their staff.
Many push Replacing policies which is generally a big NONO as it can lead to long term issues, not the least of which being commission denials. Ive been trained in the field with this company and I saw:
1- straight up Rebating, (Bribing clients into buying policies)
2- churning/twisting (replacing policies at the detriment of the company/customer or both which is illegal)
3 - Forging signatures.
4- Tax fraud - 'managers' put their sales under the names of lower employees, force the employee to pay the manager back the commission of those sales in cash to fly under the radar ((My manager put over 7000$ in my name without permission from me in just over a month))
Beyond that, as far as trust goes - AIL makes it nearly impossible to cancel policies. Theyre one of the few companies that require a written letter be sent in, and often they would ignore the letters. It got to the point that I began recommending stop payments to allow the policies to lapse. However, if the client has a whole life policy, it can take months, and even years before the policy lapses and the loss is the entire cash value - (obviously, AIL does this on purpose so that they can avoid paying back the cash surrender value of the policy) ====>Certainly not a reputable company
To end my horror story. I quit about a year ago, but I still check out the company and report them to the FTC and other regulatory agencies just to be a thorn in their side. Just recently though, my old "manager" (GA) delivered a pizza to me.
Normally, with well reputed companies who screen their employees, managers stick for sometime.
While he wouldnt say why he 'resigned' from AIL. I figured that all the fraud, replacing, and...other things... caught up to him.
But put it in perspective: while I worked their, He was referred to as a 'Super Stud Sales Star'
So clearly, even the rock star people who sell, dont stick.
Look, just dont waste your time here. I still sell insurance, but for a different company which does these things called "audits" and compliance courses, and holds all of the sales crew to a "Standard" I make decent money and I stand by what I sell.
AIL was a detour for me personally, I made no money long term there (even though I made sales weekly and usually hit quota)
I burned a crap tonne in gas, and while I didnt have to work 85 hours (like some people apparently have) I did not enjoy one part of the company . Not worth the time, an overall unpleasant experience.
I received a call from a "recruiter" this morning, advising that she found my resume' on Monster, and wanted to discuss a job opportunity in the Sacramento, CA office. When I asked her specifically if this was an insurance sales job, which I was not interested in. She didn't answer the questions, but only responded, "There are many opportunities with my company, including management." She further explained that I can come in for an interview, and I will be told more extensively about the position. I reluctantly made an appointment for tomorrow, but I felt weird about the conversation. She also asked me if I was employed, which I thought was an odd question. I decided to Google the company. I was shocked and horrified when I saw the reviews about this company. I called this woman back, and left her a message, indicating that I was cancelling the interview. The voice mail was odd, it did not have a company name, nor did a person answer the phone! It felt like a scam from the start, especially since my called ID identified the call as being from "ADT Direct." I'm so glad I researched this company, before wasting my time!
Well i have to say i am with American income life insurance company just got all my paper work in the mail do to messing up on my family of five they had two life policy for my hubby out why? my question is when I need this money for what ever the reason is, will I have it or will the time come in the end over the years to tell me diffrent my hubby has thought about closing the 5 accounts we have open with them an going with a company his father has !
Well, I received a generic e-mail from AIL today, I knew right away it was specific to my skill set I have on my resume. It was from the CEO (which rarely EVER happens) and had a link that said "Click Here If Interested" both HUGE hints. I am a Business Marketing degree and I know enough that an entry level position will not make $60, 000-$90, 000 per year. It unfortunately just, doesn't happen.
I did post my resume on Monster.com, like many of you here, and I'm so thank-ful for all of your feedbacks, and kind words. It's great we're looking out for each other because it's a scary world and I really didn't want to waste my time and energy.
Thanks again, all the best!
I am a regional Manager named Anthony Osborne. I am here to admit my guilt in the scam. I deliberately and willfully scam hundreds of people here is my email if you wish to discuss further details about this pitiful company
I was scammed by AIL - please visit my blog http://americanincome.typepad.com/
I was called for an interview. Glad I looked it up first. The phone call was weird and I am not a salesperson and have never worked in insurance. There are plenty of complaints about this company...enough that I will not be going to this interview. Thanks for posting the info.
To the above:
Seriously? You want us to reasearch Warren Buffet, Edward Jones, TMK, Fortune...etc? Why? As an "HR" for AIL you should know better. Warren Buffet is an investor who at one time owned Torchmark (TMK) stock. This is AIL's parent company and has nothing to do with whether or not someone should work for AIL. Edward Jones is just the broker for AIL's joke of a retirement plan. Fortune is the company that is most famous for their "Fortune 500" companies which, despite AIL's many claims, has NEVER made that list. Hot Jobs/Yahoo just rate companies on the number of postings for jobs. Again this has nothing to do with AIL being a good place to work for as their constant need to fill empty job positions is the only reason they are even on that list.
So, there you go, just did your "research" for you. Thank you for wasting our time with information that has absolutely nothing to do with the questions posed on these forums.
Who are you? Why are you writing these things?

Let me just say a few simple uncomplicated things to help this person. The bottom line is that AIL is aggressively recruiting and growing. There is nothing immoral or unethical about the company, its founders, its current executives, or its agency force. What really bothers me more than anything, is that the vast majority of people on this site never even came down for the interview, therefore have no real information about the company whatsoever. Don't conduct an investigation into the company based on the comments of people who have either failed here or never made the attempt. Read between the lines and don't fail before you begin. This website does not contain the best of the best only the worst of the worst, don't follow the crowd, lead it. This company is not for everybody, we do our best to find individuals who we feel will succeed, which is why the funnel is humongous on top, yet tiny at the spout. All I ask is to not base your decision on sites such as this, there are plenty of real, viable, intelligent sources available at your fingertips to find accurate information about any company's validity.
Bottom line: Those who can do. Those who can't come over to these websites to air their sour grapes.
fishy
I had my initial interview today on Ridgely Road in Lutherville, Maryland with Ms. Thompson . The company "found my resume' on careerbuilder.com" Mr. Vann gave the orientaion and I swear that his speech seemed like something off of a commercial it seemed like an act. I'm really not sure what the situation is, but all I know is a few peolpe stayed and a few people left. Ms. Thompson told me that I would know if I was hired by the end of the orientation and I "luckily "" I was hired ! There was no application, criminal background check, drug test, no indication that this job was real. Most jobs ask you for atleast a social security number/ card or something. Not them. I asked them( Mr. Vann and Ms. Thompson) a variety of questions and there was no type of consistancy in their answers . If things were real and true how come they had 2 differenct answers to the same questions? When I got back to my desk at work and actually thought about what just happended it just sounded like a whole bunch of crap, so I called Ms. Thompson and asked if this company was a scam, of course they said no but you know when something is too good to be true it usually isn't especially the figures if you make 6 sales per week you can make $115, 804 per year, and they offered me a managers position even though the only person that I have ever managed is my 10 year old son. I am only a secretary for the State of Maryland (Intern) BCDSS so how can you just make me a manager every thing is just so fishy. Once I got back to the office I started doing some research and I am not liking the thing that I am hearing about this company! Beware ! June 24th 2010

ROBERT CHOBOR IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PIECES OF GARBAGE AROUND. I PERSONALLY WOULD NEVER TRUST THIS LOSER WITH ANY OF MY BUSINESS.
I think this is the same bum who now works for NNA now. So if American Income Life is so great and he was doing so good...why is he not working there anymore? ###
haha this guy won a contest against me and others to become an mga. you dont have to earn it so how good of a company can it be ? we both started the same time and where only there like 2 months and we need to sell polocies in one week to win at being mga. I left when i knew that the office was going down
More American Income trolls trying to pull the shade down over your eyes so you cant see the truth. Its obvious that whoever is writing in support of Robert Chobor is probably his wife. He gets paid to recruit you and continue the scam so he will sweet talk anyone or anything. Sorry Robert you cant scam me and get me to do your dirty work. My advice to other who go into this place for an interview is to RUN! They will hire anybody talented or not. Thats not a good thing
Wow, the two posts above sound like a bunch of 14 year old teenie bobbers who are upset that someone is making fun of Justing Beiber. Way to keep showing on here how "employees" of AIL can be so professional.
ANOTHER THING IS COME CORRECT WITH YOUR STORY! ROBERT WAS NEVER IN JAIL! AS WELL AS DOES NOT DO DRUGSS! HOW PETHETIC ARE YOU PEOPLE! ARE SO BORED THAT YOU HAVE TO WRITE THIS STUFF! GET A LIFE! I KNOW WHO IS WRITING THIS JUNK! I WONT SAY ANY NAMES! =))) HOPE YOU GET A REAL JOB ONE DAY AND A REAL LIFE!
STAY WORKING YOUR BANKING JOB MAKING $10 AN HOUR I WILL STICK WITH ROBERT CHOBOR MAKING OVER 100, 00 THOUSAND A YEAR... =) ITS SO SAD HOW PEOPLE WOULD ACTUALLY GO TO THIS EXTENT TO TRY AND MAKE SOMEONE LOOK BAD WHEN THEY ARE THE ONES WHO ARE SO NOT WORTHY OF KEEPING UP... YOU ALL SHOULD GET A REAL LIFE AND STOP HATING ON ROBERT! HE HAS AN AMAZING WIFE THAT WORKS WITH HIM AND SHE IS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! HE ALSO COMES FROM AN AMAZING FAMILY SO I AM NOT SHOCKED WHY PEOPLE WOULD WRITE THIS STUFF ABOUT HIM. JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU HOW PEOPLE ARE JEALOUS... HE IS ONE MAN WHO I WOULD SAY IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN EXTREMELY TRUST WORTHY, LOYAL, COMPASSIONATE AND A VERY HARD WORKER! SO PLEASE STOP WRITING ALL THIS PHONY STUFF ABOUT HIM... THANK YOU =))) just AN FYI: YOU TO CAN MAKE MONEY! JUST BE A HONEST PERSON AND STOP BEING SO JEALOUS OVER OTHER'S GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY!
wow I am so shocked at all these complaints about robert chobor I have been working with him for a year now and he is Very professional. and not to mention making great money. robert is very honest about the company and what it entitles... Funny a lot of people get fired for not being able to keep up with us in the company, its is a sales career and most don't keep up with the sales, so they either leave or get fired.. SO which makes me believe that they are all just very upset at the fact that he is doing wonderful and is making lots of money. Some people need to get over them self's! ALSO WHY WOULD ROBERT EVER STARE AT THIS FAT GIRL WHEN HIS WIFE IS A MODEL! I met her so I would know.. =) later Haters!
Wow I worked with a Robert chobor in the staten island office and that office was the most unprofessional place ever . I was only there for a short time and left after he went to work in D.C. I think. I'm surprised the company even hired him and others there as he always bragged that he did a year in rikers island jail for drugs and there was a bunch of them always smoking weed during work and fighting in the office . If it's the same guy from new York I would stay far away from what ever he's doing . I'll take a comfy banking job with a guranteed pay anyday.
This company is always trying to pull something off. all you have to do Ms Thompson, Mr Vann and Mr Chobor is to be honest and upfront that this is a sales job instead of fishing for agents.
stay as far away from this company as possible
I read some of the complaints when i went for my interview with american income but decided i would check it out for myself. I should have listened! Stay as far away from this company as you possibly can! They promise you leads and a great company but instead all they give you is leads that are 2+ years old and terrible people to work for. They take everything you have. You pay and pay and pay to work for them, then before you can try to start earning anything you have to memorize a 16 page script verbadem and video record yourself before you can even start to work.
The boss and people you work for are so demanding of your time, you can't have a personal life whatsoever. Expect to put in at least 80 hours a week and not get paid! I only put in 2 and a half months with them and completely regret giving them a chance.
I'm just writing this to hope to save anybody else who is an optimist not to trust this company. They are everything that other people have written, do not work for or trust american income life! They will screw you out of a lot of money and time!
Hello guys, i actually just got hired at ail, and then a friend of mine referred me to this link. I havent paid for my insurance temp. Liscence yet so i haven't started working. Should i get it and still pursue working? Is the money as good as they say it is even if im working like a dog? You can give me feedback at bam. Bdog024@yahoo.com
Im not sure who here has actually worked 80 hours.
After quiting this less than mediocre gig, and then reading the complaints I have concluded that each agency is different and that I may have actually worked for one of the better ones...which is sad.
Getting this out of the way, I never worked 80 hours, maybe 50.
But of course I also saw many deductions that were not explained on my commission check which is one of the reasons I told them to suck it.
I was making 800-2000 in sales each week. Which should net me 400-1000$ a week in pay.
What I got was substantially less than that. And that isnt including my fuel expenses.
Leads are garbage..Ok not literally, The leads are actually good people, and some have given me dinner, drinks, and on one occasion, a block of cheese. Figuratively though, The leads are not quality.
You do bring them some lame ### free benefits, a 4000$ accident policy theyll never use, a vogue optical discount card and a psuedo will kit. This is just to get your foot in the door. The leads will have seen this before. Because we try to sell them stuff several times a year as it turns out.
Once your foot is shuved firmly in, you sell em some insurance. Fittingly enough AIL has a pretty crappy product, a few days of research and checking out the competition yields some interesting results.
Turns out AIL has among the HIGHEST RATES...
It is very difficult for a good conscience to sell an inferior product.
I could still meet targets all without selling my soul and without losing too much quality time with friends and fam.
But for me, nothing is worse than knowing you sell an inferior product.
The reality is, insurance is a product the general public knows little about. If you make an honest sale, be certain that the person buying doesnt understand fully what theyre buying. I always made the policy as inexpensive as I could and as suiting to their needs, but even then I knew my product was inferior.
The people who claim to have really big sales numbers at AIL, well theyre either BSing to you or their clients.
The latter is probably true.
When I spoke with existing clients, I have concluded that probably 2/3s had been ###ed to by previous agents. And the most sickening part is that these people are not whales. They are not financially well off.
At the time I accepted the job, I know i was in a financially weak position, and many of the people I would interview were much worse financially than I was...
I did not feel comfortable selling people in weak financial positions an inferior product.
Now dont get me wrong. I believe in Insurance, The reason I say that AIL has an inferior product is because the rates are so darn high and they do not offer a diverse range in products...
Alright the final straw is the Tax fraud that goes on. Regardless of what agency you work at, your higher ups will put their sales in your name. What this does is put their pay cheque in your name. They then threateningly follow you to the bank to cash the cheque and demand their portion in CASH. Why? so that they can fly under the IRS or Revenue Canada's radar, meanwhile you look like you make substantially more than you actually do.
Look guys, there are better sales jobs out there. Sales is one of the highest paying careers out their for people who cant afford the time or money to go to law school.
You may certainly see 6 figure earnings with AIL, but the price is that you represent a morally questionable company, with no hiring standards whatsoever, who will nickel and dime your paycheque and trust me on this, doesn't matter how nice your audi is, you will feel like ###.
Ive worked sales gigs before. In every sales field prior to this, NOTHING beat the feeling of making the sale, but every sale I made here, Well It was a meh, I would have felt better laying bricks is what it felt like.
Whatever you do, don't work for AIL in Minnesota. Really not at all, but specifically there. The Chad Deley, Jeff Churchfield agencies are the worst.
I have my 4th interview with AIL tomorrow morning and hoping somebody will comment to this and tell me his/her story. I would be working in Minneapolis, Minnesota and would like to know if someone reading this has worked for this company in Minnesota and would like to know their thoughts. Please help!
Hey Scam or Talk. Please show us where AIL (Torchmark) was ever a Fortune 400 company? Just shows us how brainwashed you've been or at the worst how you're willing to lie just like the rest of them.
Just got a call for an interview today... After reading a lot of really upsetting complaints, I'm not going to waste my time. :( Too bad. Luckily I didn't get the call till I was on my way home from a legit, amazing job offer. :) I wasn't expecting such a bad repoir from a monter career post. Bummer.
My name is Anthony Osborne and I am an HR manager in Chattanooga TN. The above complaint is accurate actually. And you two are the liars. I don't make anywhere near that salary and I am way above you. This company sucks and no one should work here unless you want to work 80 hours a week for 20 grand a year!
Wow. This is a total and complete lie. I am amazed by some of the garbage people are allowed to post on the internet. When a person accepts a job for 100% commission, they have no one to blame for their inability to succeed but themselves. Whatever the reason, it takes an angry vain person to post such negative garbage with the sole purpose of keeping you from realizing your ability. I would like to invite all readers to the ailife.com website to view the increase in stock and client base. I love the company that I work for and the clients that I serve.
Completely accurate. Pay them money you don't have, give them time you could be applying elsewhere, lie to people to get through their door, be humiliated by managers for not doing a good enough job, endanger your life by trying to sell in the ghetto.
You will be told about 100, 000 incomes, but then you are told to be excited by making the great bonus of 1050 a week in sales, which will pay you less than 500. If my math is correct, 500 *52 weeks per year is 26000. That is before expenses. Remember, you are paying for your own gas and car, you are paying for your licensing, you are paying them an agency fee, you are paying for your cell phone, you are about to be asked to pay for your laptop to present on.
Sounds like a great deal to me.
shady business tactics
My husband and i received a call from ail a week ago. The woman i spoke with on the phone said she wanted to set up a meeting to discuss our union benefits. I agreed to have her meet with my husband & i at 11:00am because he works second shift and wouldn't be awake earlier. She called at noon the day of the meeting and said she was running late. She also had an appointment she needed to make it to, and asked if she could meet with us at 1:30pm instead. My husband leaves for work at 2:00pm, but i figured we knew enough about his benefits that we could probably be finished by the time he had to leave. When she did show up, she had a great life insurance opportunity for us. We were a little taken back by this, but listened thinking she was telling us about the life insurance my husband is entitled to through his job. Long story a little shorter, we gave her a check for $65 dollars to cover the first month of this insurance . I was contacted a day or two later concerning automatic bill pay. By my own personal choice, i do not allow anyone to automatically take anything out of our account, and i told them that i wanted to receive billing statements. I received a call the next day telling me it would cost more for the life insurance if i received statements, but if i allowed them to take out the next months premium through automatic bill pay, i could change it after that with no jump in cost. I said okay. He then told me i had to change the date of when the money would be pulled or our new premium would lapse. Again i agreed. Long story a little shorter, this man asked if i was a stay at home wife. I said yes. He said he would have hr contact me within a day or two to start me on my way to a new job. Nice thought. Never had a job just fall into my lap when i wasn't necessarily looking for one... The next day i received a call, and was given the address & time of my interview from hr. I spent some time thinking about this company and how quick and helpful they seemed. Then i remembered a job telemarketing i used to do. And a vacuum company that did business in a similar way.
*the company my husband works for had him fill out a union card. That card gets copied and sent to all of their affiliates (Lead list) ail called us making it sound as though they were part of the union my husband works for, and did not actually tell us different in the meeting.
**add insult to injury, this wonderfully nice woman that met with us told us about a great opportunity for 5 people of our choice to receive, free of charge, $2000 dollars worth of life insurance. All we had to do was fill out the cards.
Those cards were 5 more free leads for this company to go after!
I will not be seeking employment from ail and i am cancelling their insurance do in whole to their shady business tactics. I realize no one really wants to deal with telemarketers, but be honest and forthright with what you are actually doing. My husbands union should have never been at the forefront of this meeting. It is misleading and i truly believe what i have been reading about this company! Maybe not quite a scam, but not good business ethics.

DonGotta- I'm glad that you came on and did your research, I am sorry to hear that you declined going in to the first interview. I hope your movie was good though, I don't think that's going to be something that helps you get a job and get the bills paid. Whether it be AIL or any other company, my assumption of looking for a position with a company is to have one main ingredient which is ferocious. Ferociously looking for a new position.
I hope you have since found a position.
I am 24 years old. I have been with AIL since i was 21 years old. That makes me 3 years in the business.
AIL has built relationships so many different groups and individuals of Associations, Unions etc...
And one thing about dealing with 95% of the families i have met with and will probably be meeting with is that hardly any of them first off, know what benefits they have through work. If they do, 90% of it is "i think i have..." "I think it's..." "i am pretty sure it covers for ..." but none of them REALLY know. Some have no idea if they even have ANY coverage, so for people to say that they already know what they have through work is 95% of the time a bold faced lie, or half hearted truth. Its just the same as car insurance, there will be a COUPLe people who really know what it covers for, and a bunch just speculating.
We do work with your union (in most cases, considering we work with over 50 thousand groups)
That is a list lead... You still filled out the card, you still requested benefits. We do not call on any member unless they filled out a card through their union (or were referred by someone else in their family or union). That again is a lead, but how else do you expect us to contact them without a lead? Osmosis?
I do find it slimy or more so, salesy, that the person who contacted you about your insurance and the billing process, tried to hire you. But that does not mean we have shady business ethics, much less a scam. It's essentially the same idea when you talk to a friend about your favorite ________ or the most interesting show called ________ . Or anything to that extent, he may be 'sold' on the opportunity, and wanting to give many other people the chance to see what he sees.
Either way, that's all just speculation...
I think you should have done more research on your work benefits, called and asked the higher ups if we(your hubbys union and AIL) actually work with you guys and if these have been set up for all of the members of _______.
They will tell you what you need to know.
Ail does not advertise and we only see the people who have asked us to come out, or those of the families (and their friends) of whom they refer these benefits out to.
I am sorry that you did not feel the same and hope that the bad taste in your mouth has subsided.
Gotta love the ever-oh-so-arrogant white collar davidsmarketing. You're sorry? You got alotta time to kill ripping people for what they shudda dun. How bout helping with what they cudda? Smug smartass. You're prolly 20 freakin years old. Your mommy's calling you with milk and cookies. Bedtime now, your getting cranky.
Aliz - you just give away checks and deposit slips to people you don't trust? what the hell is wrong with you people? This again sounds like a case of "it's easier to blame them than myself." Sounds like you signed something and then realized that you couldn't afford it, gotta love the blue collar.
I'm sorry but you sound like an idiot and I still don't know what they did wrong, it sounds like they asked you about everything they were doing and you said yes. I know it's tough to look in the mirror but if you are a stay at home wife then how could you be so stupid? Please reply.
This sounds just like what my wife and I just went through 4 hours ago.I have been getting madder and madder with every passing minute thinking about the $20, 000 policy for $65 a month, and HAS to be auto draft from my checking account. 65 for 20, 000? It was all bull, lies of omission! Now this person has a check, a voided deposit slip, my signiture and my wifes, I do not feel good about this at all!
She didn't even offer me a job !
I'm going to the bank monday to stop payment on the check and stop any auto drafts.I don't trust the agent to cancel, you know, lies of omission...
horrible experience
I used to work for AIL. It was a horrible experience. The company is completely unprofessional. Employees there seem to get positions where they have no experience in just because they date the right people.
They will call you and say its not sales. Its ALL sales! Its ALL commission, nothing more. You will make money, with time and effort, you will make lots. But if you dont like sales, your wasting your time and everybody will lie and say there are other positions. There never is!
AIL is a recruiting company that happens to sell insurance. Their main focus is getting more people in for sales. The more people in the less work the managers have to do. With the people in they use them as puppets to do all the dirty work and they get a cut from the work.
I went for my first interview today. I thought something might be amiss, so I've checked it out enough, I am going to go back to an extremely hard working job as a CNA, absolutely no sales experience ever. I'm a very hard worker, you have to be in my position.
Thank you for helping to make up my mind not to go to that interview tomorrow.

Wow. This is a total and complete lie. I am amazed by some of the garbage people are allowed to post on the internet. When a person accepts a job for 100% commission, they have no one to blame for their inability to succeed but themselves. Its hard to look at oneself in the mirror and say, "I am a failure because I did not use my time or resource correctly." Some people do not have the stamina or motivation to work for 100% commissions. Currently, I am making $110, 000 annually. I did not have to sleep with anyone to get the the management position that I now hold. I train agents how to build a new career so they do not have to wait in the unemployment line or wait for a recruiter to call them out of thousands of applicants. It would be much easier to blame an entire company for one's failure. Your right that sales isn't for everyone, but one thing I will disagree about in regards of "AIL", is the manor they go about recruiting people. I got a random phone call from the HR from AIL today about a job interview for tomorrow. They said they got my resume from Jobs.com or something; but I never submitted anything for an insurance position. I had to see what this company was about, so here I was looking online reading all the disclaimers from all the customers and sales representatives affiliated with AIL. I've done sales, and was highly touted, but now I want to have a more legitimate career that didn't involve me promising customers all the rewards, but down playing the risks. AIL is not for everyone, and I command the agents that have made a successful career out of selling insurance. I only hope the company is forthright with job seekers about what positions they maybe initially applying for.
them bastar** wanting you to push yorself to make good money, bad company your right, go back to food stamps! you should not be able to sit around and do nothing and still get paid what someone who is working hard gets.get a clue, maybe your occoupation has not been invented yet?LMFAO!
If you didnt know that Insurance + commissions = sales.
I can guess, you're the only one who didn't know that coming in.
Because we tell you this is NOT sales in the sense that you will be cold calling and door to door selling and what not (like TYPICAL insurance) but never once ever, do we ever say
THIS IS NOT A SALES POSITION THERE IS NO SALES ASPECT AT ALL.
I am sorry that you had a terrible experience in AIL, but I don't think it is because you were told it wasn't sales, or even that people were getting promoted because of whom they dated. Though, I doubt that's even relevant to a promotion.
I think it's because you came in with different impressions of what AIL is, to what it's really not.
AIL is sales, I'll tell anyone and everyone. Sales is not for everyone, I think that you may have fallen in the latter part of the catagory.
I hope you have found success in whatever else you do though.
scam
I, too, was duped by a phone call suggesting that the manager, Mr. "Star", was interested in my resume. Upon further discussion with the "interview-setting-person", something just didn't sound right - in particular, it sounds like she had not even read my resume. This morning I woke up early to prepare for my 9:00 a.m. (seems to be the theme for most of us) interview when I decided to check this company out. Thank God I did (wish I'd done it last night - I'd have slept in). I sincerely appreciate all of your comments and appreciate this Web site. I may have wasted a great deal of time on this SCAM. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your comments.

I did some research of my own when American Income called me for a job interview today after reading these I'm not going. There were some things that sounded strange to me over the phone especially when the man named Troy mentioned to me about sending me an email and that he had to check the email for spam before sending it.
I mentioned this to my husband and before I had a chance to finish telling him everything he said that this whole job interview sounds phony and very strange. Thank you to all that posted these complaints.
harassing phone calls
This company will not stop calling my home phone number. Several months ago I had requested that a representative from the company contact me about supplemental life insurance, however after speaking with them I decided I did not want the coverage and explained that I was not going to do business with their company. At least once a week since then, and for the last few weeks, I have received unsolicited phone calls from that company. We usually ignore the calls when we see the company name on the caller ID, however my wife answered the latest call and told the rep to stop calling. The rep continued with her "sales pitch" and ignored my wife's request to take our phone number off their contact list. When my wife requested to speak with her manager, the rep rudely told her, "No, you don't need to speak with my manager, " and when my wife asked her again the rep hung up on her. I hope this will end the calls from them, however I just wanted to let potential customers know that if you attempt to do business with this company, they WILL NOT STOP CALLING YOU!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Not only is this “ company “ a complete scam they never stop calling you, oh and you will almost certainly get money taken out of your account prior to getting “ approved “ while awaiting paperwork that will never arrive in the mail. I spoke with an individual by the name of Gunnar Jorstad he seemed like a genuine person I thought anyway. But upon further investigation they’re all just trying to get paid while scamming hard working people out of money for “ life insurance “ they’ll never get. I’m disputing the current charge from them now. I will also attach what they took out and what they put back in.
Dawn
I was contacted by this company also. They said that they were calling because of my union. From one thing lead to selling me a life and accident insurance. In total. I paid every month. $140. Now I've contacted them about canceling my 2 policy from since the middle of March. They sent me an email with a form of cancelation just for me to fill in my name and both policy numbers and my date of birth, and the 4 last number of my social insurance number and sign and date. I did all that. Different people keep on sending me the same form to fill out. In total, I got 3 form in my email, and now one by mail. Plus a bill for $140.. o contacted them asking why am I getting a bill after I spoke to you people plus numerous emails letting know 3 weeks in advance about canceling my policy, the person said to not worry about that bill that was sent to me, it just a computer generating bill thays automatically sent out to their customers. I said that shouldn't happen, cause I'm no longer doing business with this company, they assured me that my policies was canceled. And yesterday I got another form again to be filled out and send to them before 30 days or I'll be receiving billing notices via mail, or any cash value that has been accrued. I'm going to fill out this firm again and take a copy and send to then, and I'll see if they will keep on bothering me. I'm so tired if them right now. I have a feeling that they were taking my money from my account and I wasn't insured under them, cause the sales man no lo get working with them. If they don't stop harassing me. Then I'll be contacting my lawyer about investing them. And if I wasn't insured with them they need to refund my money that I was paying since May,28/2022, until February 28/2023. I'll be talking about suing American income Life Insurance Company. PS. I was also calling their customer number and it's saying that I was calling there after hour number, and to leave my name and a brief message along with a number, and someone will get back to me. We'll. The phone hung up so I couldn't leave any messages. This a learning for me a d to others to not do any business with this company. I'm having no peace. They keep on threatening me about paying.
They told me they got my number from my daughter, now we have complimentary benefits. My daughter has not done business with them. I canceled the appointment, unfortunately they now have my address. I am kicking myself for falling for their ruse, the phone call was very unprofessional. There were people talking in the background, which didn't sound like office chatter. I blocked their number, immediately they called from a different number, I blocked that too. I'm just afraid they will come back to my house.
Just got the same phone call; very misleading and suspect. It did not last long since I quickly researched the company, while on the phone. It was actually funny that I called them out about who they really were while they were talking to me. Their tactics went out the window, they got flustered and that was the end of that. I would not say they were unprofessional, but inexperienced to the point that I would not want to work with the company based on a misleading first impression.
I had a call from this company too. The rep kept telling me that he wanted to provide me benefits. He stated that they were sponsored from a union member and that this was not any type of solicitation. "These benefits are extended to family members..." This is not completely deceitful but very misleading in the way they word things. A sales tactic just like all the other solicitors out there. Either way, if a person says do not contact me, I am not interested. That should be the end of the conversation and if the company has trained employees, representing them, they should never be rude!
Yes, the company is aggressively recruiting but that doesn't mean they are honestly recruiting. I have had to train many people who came out of training expecting something that the company was simply not providing. Yes, leads are provided to the agents but that doesn't mean they are reliable leads. Many times the leads are recycled from the agent who just surrendered that lead pack. I lost count of how many times the trainees would quit saying a variation of "this is not what I was told the job would be." I do agree with you that this is not the best forum for someone to decide whether or not they should seek employment with a company but if the company did not have that issues than why are there so many being posted on this and several other sites. The product that AIL provides is a good one. Why not build off of that?
If any of you need to investigate this company, these are the places where an investigation should be conducted.

I also faced similar kind of situations. Here is my suggestions to deal with them .
Just tell them that you are interested .Ask their representative to contact you at your address and give them a fake address .Let them try contacting you at that fake address .
Or when they start explaining them about their products .Keep asking some dump questions and make them feel irritated and disconnect their phone .
you people are tripping
you people are tripping. if you don't want to work that is onyou! i also went to ail for a job, i paid for agot a life and health lic. i did not end up working for them because, i could not retain the 9 page script. now i know that if a nut thing to have to retain 9 pages of script word for word but, i stll have that lic. and i am able to make a plethra of cash. i am signing a contract today with another company making a hell of a lot more money the i would have at ail (about 10k a month) . so i just wanted you people to know, they are not that bad, aslong a you are willing to spend a lot of time and hard work to learn a 9 page script. everyone in the insurance industry says ail is a good company and there sales people who worked in the past for ail ar the top producers makin in accesses of 20k per month and more.
i truely wis i had the time to learn thier script and i will say 1 more thing. the people i had met in ail were very nice and helpful with everything i had needed to get my lic. and any other questionsion i had. ail also had a class to make sure we had a fair chance to pass the state exam, find that at another company, if you do youare fortunate. i wish all of you folks who didn't have a very nice expieriance at ail have better luck in the future finding something that fits you but, remeber this. if you want a job that pays the big bucks, don't think itwill be handed to you, you will need to work for it!
Bob, you mentioned you are now working for a Company? Which Company did you accept? Anyone have any suggestions please? I have had my license now since August, work with an individual that is ready to retire. So I would like to move on. Thank you. Sincerely; Barbara

Jut the type of person that AIL wants to work for them. Someone that reads at a 2nd grade level and can't form a sentence. After reading your first paragraph I have no doubt that you couldn't memorize a 9-page script and that you are lying about making $10k a month with a new company. I'm sure you did your resume in crayon and no one in their right mind would hire you.
Bob Fleming - You rock.
It sucks that you couldn't get down the script, just reading what you wrote I can tell you would have done amazing things. I hope the absolute best in the company you go to and thank you for the response! It is much appreciated!
wierd
First I was contacted via email. I rarely follow up on those as the majority are nothing but "BOT" programs designed to pull your inof from Monster or Hot Jobs. well this one was a little different as I also received a phone call. I was informed that the company was very interested in interviewing me. What was a little wierd was, that the person calling me...

this is my fourth contact with this companyregarding a loan from my life insurance policy.two by phone, i signed the form requesting a loan & mailed it. Then, someone reprted to me that it was never received. So, I hand wrote a letter and sent it via certified mail. It was received on 2/08/10, and signed by Liz White.
I would like to know where that loan is! And why have I not received it after ten days! If i do not receive it within twi days. My next contact with you will from a laywer. My request should not have taken this long. As it has been at least four weeks since my initial request by phone and sending your form requesting the loan, and I made two - three telephone inquiries, before sending the certified letter requesting that same loan. This very poor customer relations and very poor business practice. I really need that money. It is mine, and it is what it is worth at this time, as I requested the full amount of worth at 1, 500 + dollars.
Sincererly,

Hey... it was FUN to phone the toll-free phone number on my email and (1) insisted on talking to Roger Smith. Or (2) ask to leave him a message. ((I mean he read all our resumes, wrote us all nice letters, surely he'd like to speak with us. Plus i wanted to ask him what was special about my resume.)) (3) asked the person answering if they believed their CEO in Texas of a $13 billion company was (a) looking at resumes in Canada; or (b) the letter was a 100% LIE, and asked them if I should respond to an email that is a 100% LIE. ...fun to hear the person squirm.

As for the person that canceled their interview, keep sitting on the couch eating twinkies. Did you even look at that growth the company is experiencing? Of course you didn't. You are one of those reality tv watchers who like drama. You love to look at the negative and never the positive. You did the person who wanted to interview a favor when you canceled your interview. You are far to weak.
Thanks for the warnings about this company. You've saved me a lot of frustration!
I figured this sounded suspicious when I got a call earlier this week. Luckily I had to cancel the "interview" due to the snow storm yesterday. I got a message to reschedule, but I will not even bother to call back. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm Sorry that you had to go through that though!
