WyzAnt the wyzant registration process is misleading, unethical

Wyzant is one of those companies that spams you with emails if you end your registration process early. I got emails from them for like a month while I was finishing my last semester of college. I finally get around to completing my registration, and invest a good deal of time and emotions passing all the 'subjects' tests. I fill out the 'short bio' field, which is to be displayed to students. There is a notice stating that I would have a limited number of opportunities to change it.

Long story short: I get a notice of rejection after my bio wasn't accepted the third time.

What I'm so angry about is that I was under no impression that I was being vetted and facing a hard cutoff. There should have been a more precise advisory along the lines of "You will have three and only three tries, else you will be rejected." I thought this process was a shoe-in to which I could return afterwards to hone my presentation.

WyzAnt Tutor stole $ 20.00 from me and wyzant refused to help!

A top Wyzant tutor, Marlene Soper agrees to take $40.00 then, WITHOUT NOTIFICATION, charges $60.00 instead!"

The wyzant platform malfunctions severely for over an hour and wyzant offers compensation for the first hour only. When the tutor, marlene soper, steals the extra $20.00, for what she estimates to be an extra 30 minutes online, wyzant only offers me a website coupon instead and refuses to help with the tutor situation.

Proof conversations copied below:

1. From skype, when technical issues were so sever that wyzant suggested we try another platform:

Me: "I think we need to stop here and wait for wyzant to get back to me. Sooo sorry."
Marlene: "yeah. I agree. I'm so sorry about this."
Me: "plz accept the 40 usd they credit to my account on their website? Or which ever u prefer"
Marlene: "oik. It's up to you. They gave you the credit, you might as well use it. Right."
Me: "ok, thank you. One minute, let me log on and check. Ok, it's there"

2. From our text messages when the theft took place:

Me: "hi marlene. I just received notification that wyzant charged me for $24 in addition to the 40 dollar credit. Have you received any notification of this?"
Marlene: "nada, when we met a week ago and had difficulty, we were talking for over an hour. When we met friday we were dealing with all of this for 1.5 hours. I asked for 1.5 hours of compensation and have not and will not ask for anything for the weekend before."
Me: "I see. I thought we agreed over skype that it was only gling to be $40? I would have preferred a heads-up, marlene.in any case, wyzant should be responsible for the extra payment, not me. I will contact them. Thanks".
Me (Later on): "hello. Wyzant has placed a credit of $25 usd in my account. Please accept that credit for the extra half hour and refund me the original 24.02 usd. Wyzant cannot transfer the funds to me directly, only through the tutor. Thanks."

No reply.

3. Email excerpts with wyzant since the incident:

"thank you for reaching out to us... Please know that tutors are able to charge for the amount of time spent with their student during a lesson. Wyzant had provided you with a credit of $40 as a courtesy due to the technical issues that you had experienced with our online lesson platform in hopes that this amount... May cover the cost of time spent attempting to troubleshoot the issues... If you do not believe the length of the lesson has been incorrectly reported by marlene, we would encourage you to speak with her directly regarding this... I want to reiterate that we are so sorry for the technical issues... With that being said, please note that there is no way for us to refund the additional $24.20 that you were charged by marlene without explicit permission from the tutor to reduce the length of the lesson... While the $30 coupon cannot be refunded to your payment method, it will remain on your account and can be used towards any future tutoring you receive through wyzant... Ince wyzant acts as the payment processor for tutors listed on our site, we are unable to adjust the charge of a lesson and provide a refund without the consent of the tutor that has submitted the charge. As such, we will not be able to provide any further refunds for your lesson with marlene s... It is important to note this decision was made in accordance with our terms of use of our site, which all users agree to when creating a wyzant account. Wyzant considers this decision to be final and a representative will not be made available to discuss this matter further.

The story:

The lesson involved in this situation is empty, for over an hour I suffered severe technical issues which wyzant could not explain. I could not even log into the classroom! In the end, they suggested I try an alternative platform until they checked their own for errors. That's when they deposited credit to compensate the first hour.

Marlene only taught a total of 15 minutes in that entire time, simply reviewing the previous lesson in preparation for start something new. Yet, I offered to compensate her for the time she spent online waiting by giving her the $40.00 credit deposited in my account. She accepted it as an even compensation, after all we were both affected by this. Then charged me an extra $20.00 behind my back! From my own money, not from wyzant.

So what was I left with as a student? Over an hour of time wasted, no new content, severe technical issues where wyzant could not help, and a payment of $20.00, un-anticipated and undeserved, with no real compensation from the company behind all this!

It's funny that a top reviewed math tutor would behave this way over 20.00 dollars! I am a graduate student, so 20 usd mean something to me, especially when they're taken by force. But for someone who charges $40.00 / hr and has over 400 positive reviews? I guess they do too.

Over ten emails were sent back and forth between me and wyzant, their answer was always the same: we're sorry for your loss, but we can't help with the tutor or the money she took. And we can't pay you directly, only site credit. Good luck!

Since I cannot upload photos onto this review, I have copy-pasted the exact text messages that were exchanged between me and marlene about money, plus excerpts from my emails with wyzant. Please read them above and judge for yourselves!

A final note: what marlene did was immoral, it's called stealing, I would be careful about dealing with her. Even successful tutors get greedy. Also, wyzant is not built to protect the students, it doesn't care if they're being extorted by the tutors, even if their platform is to blame! I would never recommend this site to anyone, their policy is unfair (There's no timer in the classroom, the tutor names the duration of the lesson as she sees fit and wyzant has no proof how long the lesson actually lasted), the platform is always crashing and their customer assistance is useless. Again, please do not save your card or paypal information on their site.

Similar Incident:
AAA,
When she reads the story she should know what words she does not know. Wyzant is only paying me $33. Let me know prior to booking so I am free. Thanks.

AAA, Please let me know if you will accept the rate change. I will not do it for less than I have stated for $45 because an AP student takes a lot more preparation. Otherwise I cannot do the lesson.

Next Wyzant closed my account saying that my daughter's account was a duplicate from mine while the lesson was going on and charged me and when I disputed the transaction with the PayPal they wrote like this:

Hi AAA, thanks for reaching out. Your account was closed in accordance of our Terms of Use stated on our website. It appears your family has attempted to create multiple accounts in our system, which were also closed, as we require all users to have a single account. It appears that you do not dispute the session as taking place, but do not agree with the fact your account was closed. You're welcome to contact our Customer Support team directly in order to review your recent transaction history, but unfortunately we are unable to remove the charges submitted by your tutor. Per our Payment Policies, students are only billed following a lesson submission by the tutor and payments must be submitted through Wyzant. We are unable to assist if you paid your tutor directly, as this is not in line with our Payment Policies and Terms of Use. Regards, The Wyzant Team

WyzAnt Arbitrary review board removes you from tutor list with no good reason.

My wife is a fabulous Madarin Chinese tutor. She has written books on the language for publication, taught numerous classes and is well respected in her classes and in the community. She has her own tv show on Mandarin with Chinese children. She works in all fazes of media, and communication, and cultural events and sponsors Chinese international film festivals.
Then she finds a part time job and decides not to complete the profile that they had sent and supposedly say they sent numerous mails, which we never received. Then they have the gall to remove her totally and keep her from responding regarding tutoring. I sense a scam dealing with bias against minority Chinese, a review board that doesn't understand what it takes to teach foreign languages, and a bias because of her email address and jobs she has had with students on her own. I would recommend moving to anyone else and the complaints keep piling up.

WyzAnt Wyzant horrible process for new tutors

Wyzant makes it really difficult to understand how to get started as a new tutor. If you do not complete there convoluted process correctly within 3 tries, you will NOT be considered to be a tutor. Without explanation, they will just say, "Sorry you don't qualify", in so many words, without giving much of a reason. Don't waste your time plus they will take a large portion of what you make.

The only complaints that I have with Wyzant (tutoring services) are they overcharge or double charged my account for service I did not have on that date of service (DOS), and the websites states they would charge $35.00 for and hours, but when I receive my bill, it comes up to $38.15. The company ad was so misleading to the customer and very unfair.

WyzAnt Prices

I found a tutor on www.wyzant.com website and she had rather low prices for her lessons comparing to other teachers. So I contacted her and she seemed nice. She suggested a day and time for our first lesson.
I did not like the lesson, it was not informative, not interesting and it was something different from what I have expected. So I decided to find another tutor. When I was about to pay for my class she said that I have to pay $100 even though on the WyzAnt website it was said $50!
I did not want to fight her so I gave her $100. The same day when I came back home I went to WyzAnt website and saw that instead of $50 there was already $100! Ridiculous!

WyzAnt terrible tutors

I am very disappointed with www.wyzant.com. First tutor was terrible and I really did not like him. Every time he ended the session after 20 min and said that was all he wanted to tell. Then I decided to find another one. But that person was very dishonest and did not know anything! All my second tutor did was telling me things that I already knew. When I asked him more difficult questions he suggested me to google the answers! What kind of tutor is that? Terrible! This place is just a waste of money.

WyzAnt Very unprofessional and unethical.

I am a mathematics tutor and have experienced quite a few problems with this company. It seems they will do nothing to resolve problems. My first problem came when a clients payments were being rejected by Wyzant. The client had me talk to her bank as she felt bad about my not being paid. It turns out the bank submitted the payment on 3 separate occasions and these were rejected 3 times . The bank finally gave up on fixing the problem as this company refuses to admit they have a problem. Now recently they claim my email address is invalid. My email provider assures me they do not do what Wyzant claims they are doing which is to delete my emails before they go into spam. From my research the only reason my email provider would delete or reject an email is if their servers do not meet the current industry standards for security. They will not open a dialog with my email provider to resolve the issue. I can not bill for tutoring sessions that have been done, I can not respond and apply to meet new students, and for the most part I am very fed up with them. Considering they take 45% of my pay for this service I would think they would be willing to look into these matters but they blow people off.

WyzAnt Abusive clause and potentially discriminatory practices

Don't waste your time applying to WyzAnt as I just experienced their abusive clause and potentially discriminatory practices. I applied online and exceeded all the conditions and expectations listed in their job offer. I also scored 100% on WyzAnt skills tests. Nevertheless, my application was denied. I can understand that, but I required some explanation from WyzAnt. I contacted the company by phone and email. A "ticket" and "case number" was opened and I expected a reply from a representative. I copy/pasted here the reply I got, for your own appreciation: "The decision to deactivate your WyzAnt tutor account was made in accordance with our terms and conditions, which are available for review on WyzAnt.com. WyzAnt considers this decision to be final and a representative will not be made available to further discuss this matter. Sincerely, The WyzAnt Profile Review Team" I reviewed the terms and conditions WyzAnt refers to in what I consider being a bold and shameful reply, and it includes the following: "WyzAnt may provide notice to Users via email, regular mail, or posting notices or links to notices on the Site. WyzAnt reserves the right at any time to modify, suspend or terminate the services (or any part thereof), and/or use of or access to them, with or without notice. WyzAnt may also delete, or bar access to or use of, all related information and files. WyzAnt will not be liable to Users or any third-party for any modification, suspension, or termination of service, or loss of related information. WyzAnt may amend these Terms at any time by posting the amended terms on this Site." (art. 21 of WyzAnt Terms). For your full understanding of the situation, let me also underline that I did not infringe any of WyzAnt terms, and I did not post any inappropriate content on my profile and application. Yet, it was denied. Once again, I can totally accept a NO to a job application, I just ask for an explanation when I meet all criteria, when I usually get a YES from similar job offers, when my skills have been proven through 15+ years of experience and satisfied clients/students. I took 5 minutes of my time to share with you how WyzAnt actually operates. I hope this helps you make your own judgement on this company and service.

WyzAnt Horrible Treatment of Tutors

Wyzant removed me as a tutor for "not following their guidelines" even though I have been a great tutor for them for two years and have always followed their guidelines. When I contacted their customer service center by phone to get answers, the customer service people can help you with any information and the review board refuses to be explicit. DO NOT use! Find someone else to work with. Horrible customer service and lack of any contact with their tutors when they thinks something is going wrong. They refuse to talk to you, just decided they had enough of me and so "poof!" gone!.

WyzAnt Background check/Fraud

I have had six federal background checks and three State of Ohio background checks done in the past nine years and passed every one of them. None of these were good enough for Wyzant who demanded that I pay for a background check through First Advantage (who I believe Wyzant receives a kickback from. The background check was demanded after I complained about not being paid, being paid late, and overall slow/poor customer service. One time they even cut off communication between my student and myself because the student's credit card number had been entered wrong. Wyzant uses the background check scam on every tutor that complains about not getting paid. Their pay is slow (eight days from their bank to mine) and is often late. Wyzant is a penny ante company that floods the area with tutors and provides no students. The worst tutoring company out there doing business.

WyzAnt Wyzant? Or spyant?

In 2014, I understand that all websites have "terms of service agreement" before signing up. I signed up to Wyzant.com because I wanted to make a little extra money as an undergrad and get some teaching experience. This plan was cut short today since Wyzant deleted my account for corresponding with a student who did not have payment information on file. Okay... first of all, why doesn't the website simply make that information mandatory for all students signing up ? Teachers and tutors signing up with Wyzant forfeit all privacy rights. They monitor every single "email" between you and the student, so I think the website should be called SPYANT instead. I will not miss them. They take a huge portion of income from lessons (over 25%) and they even charge a "check processing fee" and give you the option of direct deposit. No thank you ! They'd probably spy on my bank account too. There are other tutoring websites out there, so I do NOT recommend Wyzant.

I am keen to bring to public awareness that the Wyzant platform is maintaining an unethical teacher database with so many customer complaints.

Some of the sites which list the complaints against unethical actions of Wyzant include:

https://www.highya.com/wyzant-reviews

https://www.bbb.org/us/il/chicago/profile/tutoring/wyzantcom-0654-88349022

I believe this is high time that I bring to customer awareness of the poor vetting of their instructors and next the resultant character defamation of the student through their platform and the instructors. As a business when it comes to handling students and education you need to be more careful and be able to have a proper validation of the teacher qualifications and the experience as Education service is not just another service. It handles youngsters. Wyzant list tutors who are house wives, who perform professional and odd jobs during the day/night. Next they list students who are currently undergraduates and High school students. All what the tutors are expecting from the student is send the assignment/material not the topic name in a standard exam board such as AP Chemistry. If you ask the tutor to explain a section in a standard High school syllabus such as CP US History, CP Latin or AP Chemistry the tutor becomes very rude and scolds you and says that is how he/she has been tutoring on Wyzant with his/her previous students and have collected 2000 hours. Some instructors list their hourly rate as $300-$500. I am not sure on what basis they do this. Next some instructors send a link from Wyzant asking for feedback and forcing to award 5 stars, if we do not do that they keep messaging and troubling the general life.

We have had the worst experience with this database/platform very recently. I created an account for my daughter to get assistance on clearing Highs school subject doubts time to time. We were so unfortunate that our database search always ended up with this unprofessional /not properly vetted instructor category and i thought that the Best fit for guarantee was correct and got few refunds from the poor teachers and at the same time we found some decent High school teachers who were great and knew what they are doing. We awarded good star ratings and we are in touch with them still through other education platforms like Varsity tutors. The trick here is that the Terms and conditions missed the most important clause like other established education platforms include that you can go on to keep searching the best instructor till you are satisfied and we will guarantee that wee will get you the best teacher for your student. Other unethical thing is that the Wyzant platform says that the student should not ask the teacher to complete the assignment, but the tutor says she/he is only doing answering the Homework. This is a pure academic dishonesty.

The best part is that when they deactivate the account of the student after deciding that they are unable to obtain the correct profit(after certain number of refunds for poor teaching), they list the student as a black listed consumer and then even if the student create another account with his/her credentials they deactivate your account saying that your account is a duplicate. This happened to me because my account got deactivated due to the 3 refunds from unprofessional teachers, next my daughter created an account under her high school account and they deactivated the account while a lesson was going on and then charged me from pay-pal for the incomplete lesson and the instructor also charged me as she was informed that my daughter's account is deactivated. Other part is that when your account get locked the tutors are messaging and calling my daughter and introducing other platforms and some like to go for reduce fees and some like to go for higher prices and next some called my daughter and called criminal as Wyzant baselessly locked the account for their profit purposes. Right now my daughter is going through a depression due to a character defamation done by one of the instructors from Wyzant after the account being locked. When i send an email asking what information regarding my daughter was sent to the instructor in order to list my daughter as a criminal all they do is sending this email:

"

Hello Gayani,

Personal information about Wyzant users is never shared without the consent of that user. Wyzant will inform tutors if a student account has been closed since we are no longer able to facilitate lessons with that student.

The accounts containing your information were closed in accordance with our Terms of Use. Wyzant considers this decision to be final and a representative will not be made available for further discussion.

Regards,

The Wyzant Team

www.wyzant.com

Questions? Visit our Help Center!"

I understand this was my mistake for using this Wyzant database for searching tutors and opening the second account under our daughter as well in order to merely to search a tutor from this database. I believe this is not a criminal activity as my daughter is completely separate individual from me and it's valid that we open two accounts under two different individuals and they tracking the personal messages on the accounts to maintain their business and intruding the privacy of individuals is incorrect. The way the Wyzant robot detected the second account was duplicate was merely through the message and video recorded lesson which is a clear privacy intrusion.

I advice the public to read the complaints listed under Wyzant and refrain from accessing this database due to the unethical nature of this platform, the resultant character defamation and the way Wyzant washes their hands after inappropriate action take place to your student.

There are other good platforms that i have started looking in to lately when i googled and found very good tutoring services and I regret over joining a platform that has an average rating of 2.2. Hopefully some more professional tutor databases comes up soon.

they changed my phone to X. the tutor told me that she couldn't read my phone since all numbers were x.
then they accused me that I attempt circumvent their policy.

I went to their website, requested a password, I created a password and didn't ask me a logging, I assumed my email will be logging. it was not and I couldn't login. they just want you to open an account with them then they give correct login and password.
Are you kidding me?.
This website is scam, they are thieves and fake and I told them clearly through email
I am so happy to read all other reviewers, and I did the right choice not to choose them.

WyzAnt Unprofessional

Don't sign up to be a tutor! I signed up about a year ago and was approved but I never went on any sessions. A year later, I'm ready to start and I get online, take a few more subject area tests, and even pay for the background to make me more attractive to students and parents.
After passing 10 subject tests and the background check, I get an e-mail that I've been rejected from the program. Thanks for letting me spend my money on the background and THEN denying me.

I am currently in a teacher training program, so teaching is my passion. I'm also on the Dean's list at my current college so I don't think my education or intelligence is the issue. If it's because they have a large amount of tutors and don't need more, they should tell you this before you spend your money on the background check. This company seems very unprofessional, unethical, and I would not recommend them to anyone.

WyzAnt Unethical company

The year 2014: WYZANT reaches a NEW LOW. Parents and students BEWARE!
Be VERY careful about finding a tutor on this website. Now more than
ever.
But before I explain WHY this company is on the verge of being corrupt, you should be warned that it is so devious that they will pull out all the stops to achieve SEO to get to the top of web searches, and will provide positive reviews, initiated by the company itself and make them appear as though they are unsolicited.

WYZANT has instituted a new policy, which is
to rank tutors in the order in which they got a lot of business in the
past couple of weeks. That means when you are looking for -- let's say a
Psychology tutor -- Wyzant will make a list of 'Best Match' psychology
tutors in your area. In other words, you'll see a list of maybe 10
tutors that are the 'best match' for you. But this 'best match'
has NOTHING to do with whether the tutor is good or not. It only has
to do with how many hours the tutor has tutored the past few weeks. In
other words, if a tutor was lucky enough to tutor for a lot of hours in
the past few weeks, her or his name will be at the top of the list.
Does that mean the person is the best tutor? Nope. In fact, the tutor
could be terrible! So what's up with that? Simple. The
agency now has tutors 'hustling' for jobs, so if one is lucky and
tutored a bunch of students, that tutor will be shown as most
recommended. That's really odd, since tutors are also given ratings by
students, and the ratings are listed alongside the tutor's name. But the
ratings have nothing to do with the "BEST MATCH' list. So, you
could actually have a tutor that has great reviews, but since the tutor
hasn't tutored a lot in the past few weeks she or he will be hidden way
down at number 20 or 30. Meanwhile, a tutor with lousy feedback or even
NO feedback might be 'best match' because the tutor got in a lot of
tutoring that week or month. Hmmm...doesn't that mean, though,
if the tutor has gotten a lot of work, the tutor must be good? NO! It
could be some tutors were on vacation that week, or were taking it easy
(maybe they were doing a lot of tutoring and needed a break), or had a
family emergency. Now, you COULD seek a tutor by CHANGING the
default from 'BEST MATCH' which means nothing to TUTOR RATING, or FEE
PER HOUR if money is an issue, DISTANCE if travel is an issue. All
Wyzant cares about is one thing" MONEY. If you're still skeptical,
try taking one of their 'tutor qualification tests.' They are at a sixth
grade level. Not only that, but you could easily pass one by having
two screens open. Say you want to get qualified in MATH, well, just
open the 10 question MATH test, then open a second screen with a math
website that provides formulas for math problems, and...you can guess
the results...

WyzAnt tutoring

worst company I ever worked for, first they charge 40 % for a person to run a website and you to find your own kids to tutor. So if you charge 30 ( average price people charge) you will make 18 and the company gets 12 for doing nothing. On top of this, they also do not let you share information (numbers email) with each other, you cant charge for gas, you cant require the student to bring or have anything ( must be provided by you) and if you tutor online via helping with work, a paper etc they will fine you and take half the money owed to you. They will side with a client over the tutor over any disputer whether it is hours worked, lessons, work provided, and charge you for it. In the end the headache, the amount the company takes from you simply was not worth the effort. I'm an educator with a Masters degree making $18 an hour and spending 10 to do it! Many other sites offer free or low cost one time fees to do the same thing.

WyzAnt No Real Job Here

Communication is one-sided only - you can't even try to include your phone number in any application where the person has no payment information already given which is basicly 99% of postings I've ever seen. I have been a 'tutor' over a year with 2+ pages of applications and not one job. Apparantly only phantom students and not real people serious about getting help in a subject lurk and post here. There should be a term like catfish for these supposed students who NEVER answer. If your serious about getting help then at least WRITE BACK to the person offering their help who really knows what they're doing in the subject with a degree & REAL certification from college to back it up with.

Most not all of my emails have been answered but the replies are basicly useless.

To get "certification" in the subjects they have you take tests that you can just google the answers to pass and tutor a subject you have no clue about. They don't let you repeat a test that you can fail the "required passing %" even if you miss just 2 questions which is ridiculous.

I have only today been referred to Wyzant as a potential source of income, so I am attempting to do my research. Every bit of info, good or bad, will be useful and taken into consideration. That said, I have to "grain of salt" the opinion of any so-called tutor who cannot spell "apparently" or differentiate between your and you're. I can ignore the tendency toward run-on sentences; I just hope this is not an English tutor.

WyzAnt Stay away from this website

Our tutor, Melissa, did not achieve any of the promised goals. She promised to improve my daughter's SAT scores. Instead, after three months and $2, 000 of lessons, my daughter lost 20-60 points in each SAT subject area from her first effort. Her precalc math grade fell to 81%, which is the lowest Math grade she has ever had. Parents beware.

WyzAnt A complete and utter waste of time

In my very brief experience and in my opinion, it was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. I signed up for Wyzant seeking a foreign language tutor for my young toddler in my home. I learned about Wyzant through a segment on CNBC. After carefully vetting their list of tutors who appeared to meet my requirements, I selected a tutor and requested that the tutor contact me via telephone first. The corporate company then sent me an email explaining that although they had forwarded the specified tutor my email, they deleted the my phone information and I could contact their company if I had questions. I contacted them and while their customer service representative was pleasant, their policy of PAYMENT FIRST, BEFORE you even get to speak to your selected tutor was RIDICULOUS. I explained due to previous bad online tutor experiences where some individuals claimed native fluency and qualifications only to prove otherwise, there was NO way I was going to let a stranger that I didn't even get to speak to into my home around my kid. Not knowing how legit this company was, I explained I did not feel comfortable giving them my credit card info and I further explained that if Wyzant was worried about getting their "cut, " I'd be more than happy if they conducted a three way call which they could partake in. The very courteous rep said they couldn't do that and I indicated that I wasn't interested. Literally after hanging up with the representative, I received several emails from prospective tutors WHOM I DID NOT even send an email to. This necessitated my calling back their customer service dept a second time and asking them to remove my info from their database as I couldn't even unsubscribe from their website. A complete and utter waste of time!

I'm sorry to disagree, but I feel that this complaint is unwarranted. I have tutored with Wyzant since 2010 and although in the beginning, I too felt the phone-number blocking policy was a bit extreme, I have come around to the realization that it is very sensible.

To set the record straight: Wyzant does NOT demand PAYMENT up front. They only ask that the customer show that they have the ability/authority to pay by asking for PAYMENT INFORMATION up front. This helps reduce the possibility that people who should not be ordering tutoring-for-payment services, including potentially millions of enterprising web-savvy children in grade school acting without their parent's permission, cannot order and receive tutoring and then say "I'm sorry I didn't know this wasn't free. Therefore I don't owe you anything. Tough one, Wyzant.", or "I'm sorry I don't have that much" (or any) "cash on me today", "Can I pay you back later?", etc.

If you don't receive satisfactory tutoring from Wyzant, you don't owe anything -- and you get up to one hour to evaluate whether or not the tutoring is satisfactory. They keep your payment information safe until the tutor bills them for the completed session. It is a much better option than paying $20 just for the privilege of talking to tutors (3 months free or not)

It is good to see the other side of the coin here. As a tutor, all we get are snippets of people wanting tutoring. They probably don't tell yo that they list your information for us to probe. They do tell us that the client doesn't have payment information on file. Without that information, we cannot even contact the client. The email system literally blocks our phone numbers. I can maybe understand that people want to try before they buy, but from the tutor's point of view, that is ridiculous. It seems that both sides think the company is ridiculous.

I had the same problem with them and a local tutoring company as well. That's why I created my own tutoring website, TextbookTactics.com. We do not charge a commission to host tutor profiles, we charge a low monthly rate of $19.99 and you can receive up to three months free when you sign up. We provide a lot of free, helpful videos to students which provides our tutors with a large client base that can find their profile. My goal is to make tutoring more affordable for families and to see tutors earn more for their work.
Best,
Shawn

WyzAnt deactivated my account

wyzAnt, for no reason deactivated my account, of course when I called I was told it would take up to 48 hours to get a reply. This company doesn't have a process for handling complaints, nor do they want too. If you use them to find a tutor the cost will be greater because the tutor has to pay wyzAnt almost half of the income. If you are a tutor don't use wyzAnt because they will charge you a huge fee that you have to pass on to the student, plus they don't have that many leads, I tutor math and science and only had two leads in two years (out of my 50 students). As soon as I got my first student from wyzAnt, wyzAnt deactivated my account.

Insanely high most of the tutors. For example there are History Tutors who cost like $150 per hour, but knows nothing other than taking your notes and re-reading.

Another worst thing is other tutoring sites take time to get the best fit, but here like a supermarket we need to cherry pick the best. Sometimes you can land in worst tutor with some morning odd job.

Wyzant does not care still they charge from you (10%) from each lesson, and after 3 complaints you make YOUR ACCOUNT IS LOCKED FOR LIFE TIME.

Pls. stop googling for tutors online, just select the best tutoring site after reading reviews from Non -Wyzant marketing sites.

You will encounter certain sites listing Wyzant as the top tutoring site, with a comment saying that they do a good vetting of the teacher. Pls. stop reading immediately and switch to a reliable site. As there is no wetting of transcripts or interviews on Wyzant and the first point itself is a fake. Wyzant spends a lot on advertising their site all over the internet with lost of unreliable material to misuse the student.

WyzAnt They have one of the worst business models

They have one of the worst business models! The small service that they offer (connecting students with tutors) is not worth the 40% that they take for each time that the student and tutor meets. They create such an awkward business environment when students don't have the payment method on file. They should be the ones forcing students to input payment info rather tutors. I hope this company fails and people stop using it...

This is old news. WyzAnt now only takes 25% from a tutor's hourly fee.

Forty percent is too high, and I have other minor issues with them, but they are a lead generation machine. I get far more contacts from them than any other source (except word-of-mouth). Note that their take decreases as you get more experience, and if you make a side deal, as someone proposed, you will get banned from WyzAnt.

The comment that they make the tutors enter payment information is just plain wrong. The students enter the payment information. WyzAnt is just trying to protect their business by not letting you send contact information until the students have done so.

Yes, WA takes a big cut, but they generate leads. It's a trade-off (like everything else).

This information is now outdated. When I first started tutoring through WyzAnt in 2015, a tutor would begin collecting 60% of their total fee for their first 20 hours of tutoring. Then, there was a gradual increase in the percentage of the money the tutor got to keep. One would earn 65% after tutoring for 20 hours, 70% after 50 hours, 75% after 200 hours, and 80% after hitting 400 hours. Nowadays, all tutors on WyzAnt receive 75% of their fee, regardless of the number of past tutoring hours they have put in.

Agree, they are ripping off the tutors. 40% is way too high, and they try to justify it by saying that the tutors get all these perks, and free business cards. Big Deal, not worth the 40% of the fee that I earned from my knowledge and service I provided. My recommendation is to use them to connect you to students, and then pitch your own side deal with the student after you meet them with a more reasonable rate that works for the both of you. And just to clarify, I’m not saying Wyzant shouldn’t get paid for connecting tutor and student, but 40%...? Not justified.

WyzAnt now only takes 25%. While I agree with you that 40% is way too high, I see this new percentage as a perfectly fair amount for helping me match with students on their platform.

WyzAnt - They deactivated my account... won't tell me why

They deactivated my account... won't tell me why. I stored my pw and mentioned a recent compromise to my PC. Still nothing from Wyzant. They are now withholding my pay! I work in Special Ed so Wyzant should not be allowed to view correspondence. I am contacting an attorney about my pay and this principle.
