CVS - Pharmacy

My husband filled a prescription for Levaquin yesterday. The dosage on the bottle was 500 mg 5x a day. There were 10 tabs in the bottle. The maximum dose is 750 mg per day. That would have been a toxic dose. I called the pharmacist. The woman who answered the phone assured me that the doctor wrote it like that. I asked her if that sounded correct. She replied that I had to call the doctor. I contacted the doctor who was very alarmed and assured me that it should be one tab per day for 10 days. I called the pharmacy back today and spoke with Kayla who said she was the pharmacist. She said they only contact the doctor if the system alerts them. I am a nurse for 40 years and I was appalled. I caught this one. What happens to a regular person who doesn't know the dosages. Very scary. She didn't seem concerned or to car at all. I don't think this practice is safe. The pharmacist should be more prudent and conscientious. If the doctor made an error or the computer glitches, they are the patient's last line of defense.

Desired outcome: CVS administration should address this issue. A licensed pharmacist should contact the physician if they get an order that doesn’t make sense or is unsafe.
