I came in because I was having flank pain and pain in the back of my head. I work full‑time and I’m a full‑time pre‑law student with a 4.0 GPA, and I have a history of kidney issues, so I was genuinely worried. When Dr. Tham came into the room, the first thing he said was, “Why are you truly in here,” in a tone that felt dismissive and confrontational. I explained my symptoms, and although I completed the tests that were ordered, I felt judged based on how I was dressed and how I looked.
There is nothing in my medical history that suggests I seek pain medication. Even during past situations like my appendectomy or having all three wisdom teeth removed, I never asked for anything beyond what was necessary. I came in because I wanted to be treated and because I was scared something serious might be going on, including hypertension or a condition that might require surgery.
Despite my concerns, Dr. Tham sent me home saying everything was fine. My blood pressure at the visit was 154/97, which is considered stage 2 hypertension, and that alone should have been taken seriously. I felt dismissed, unheard, and stereotyped, and that is unacceptable in a medical setting.
It’s important to me that this is addressed. Patients should not be judged based on appearance or assumptions. I don’t drink, smoke, or use any drugs. I simply wanted care, and instead I left feeling disrespected and ignored.
HE TREATED ME LIKE I WAS SOME JUNKIE ADDICTED TO PAIN MEDS WTF? HE HAS SOME SERIOUS ISSUES!
