I recently returned from taking the Globus “Spanish Fiesta” tour (09/08-09/21/2025). Spain is a beautiful country, and I do not regret going, but I do regret using Globus. I have experienced “tours” with other companies and never had an issue.
The first day I was in Madrid, I suffered a medical emergency and informed my Tour Director of what occurred. He referred me to a clinic that according to the hotel staff (Riu Plaza España – Gran Via) and the Tour Director “guests from Canada had gone to and were treated.”
To make a long story short, I ended up going to three different clinics before someone was able to explain to me that I could not be treated in any of them. Spain has “public medicine” and as a foreigner with private insurance I needed to go to a “private hospital or clinic.” Now, a Tour Director working in Spain and Globus for 20 years should KNOW this (and the Riu staff) and have sent me directly to a private hospital/clinic. I ran around Madrid, on my own, for over two hours until I was referred to “Hospital Universitario Fundacion Jimenez Diaz” on Avenida de Los Reyes Catolicos, in Madrid.
At the hospital I had to pay $400.00 euros for treatment, and I must deal with my own insurance. In addition, the hospital was not familiar with the “Travel Insurance” I purchased through Globus for $399.00 US dollars. (By the way, the Tour Director is NOT familiar with that insurance either.) I called the number given for the Travel Insurance and they were no help.
After treatment, the hospital prescribed medication and gave me a prescription. It was almost midnight, and we were leaving Madrid the next day. The only “concern” I received from the Tour Director the next day was, “Is everything OK?” I told him I needed to fill my prescription and he told me that I can do that at the NEXT stop in Segovia.
Overall, I am very disappointed with the treatment of the Tour Director, not only personally, but in general. His main concern was scheduling and not using the facilities on the bus. Most of the group were seniors, who most of us are on personal medications and diets and cannot be “holding” using facilities. We were rushed to have breakfast, rushed to get on the bus, and as soon as we arrived at “scheduled locations” that would be at least two hours away and go right into the local tour. We were expected to use facilities once on break. There were several times during the tour that I would speak up and ask to use the facilities and he would get annoyed because we were on a schedule. (Other persons on the tour would thank me for saying something…they were embarrassed to say anything. That should not be the case…we are on vacation!) This is an inconvenience that can result in health/medical complications.
I have briefly summarized my Globus experience but believe you get an idea of my experience. I do not know how the rest of the tour described their experience, but that is up to them.
Right now, I am dealing with my medical insurance, and it is not a simple task or process. I believe Globus should refund my $399.00 Travel Insurance, because it is something that having my own insurance I DID NOT need.
I understand Globus has high ratings on Trustpilot and TourRadar, but right now I do not believe I can sincerely provide any positive feedback.
I honestly hope and expect a response and resolution to my complaint.
Thank you.
Claimed loss: $399.00 US dollars
