Cruise description:11 Day Danube River Cruise with Munich - Budapest to Regensburg (Monarch Queen) -Cabin E
Dates: Aug 1 to Aug 11 2026
Date: Aug 19th 2026
Dear Gate 1 Customer Relations:
My spouse and I recently returned from our scheduled Gate 1 River Cruise ending Aug 11 2026. We travelled with two our couples, both of which we had recommended for several other Gate 1 trips within the last three years.
We have experienced 15 other Gate 1 excursions since 2018 ourselves while the other couples we introduced to Gate 1 initially have enjoyed several as well and we all enjoyed those tours without any concerns.
However, as Gate 1 is aware this River cruise itinerary was significantly and negatively impacted, due to the ongoing low water levels on the Danube which we now understand has affected all other cruises to a similar degree. We completely understand that Gate 1 can’t control the unusually low water levels on the Danube. Our concern is how significant those changes ended up being, how they were communicated to us, and how different the trip was from the river cruise we booked and paid for.
While we are aware your general brochure contains a broad disclaimer regarding low water levels potentially impacting itinerary, a generic warning does not discharge your ethical obligation to actively notify clients of all major alterations beforehand as well as the implications this would have on our overall River Cruise experience. Had we been more accurately informed, we would have exercised our right to evaluate alternatives or cancel the booking. We were not given either option.
(We acknowledge that a Gate 1 representative did call us directly several days prior to departure to explain the uncertain situation in Hungary and that only one minor change to the river cruise schedule was required impacting only 2 days of cruising, however the agent offered no credits and or alternative to rebook and or cancel our tour).
We specifically chose this river cruise because we wanted to cruise and enjoy the Monarch Queen, enjoy the scenery and onboard amenities, unpack once, and experience the sit-down dining that comes with a river cruise. Instead, a significant amount of our vacation was spent travelling by coach, waiting for transportation and hotel check-ins, and repeatedly packing and unpacking our luggage. Some excursions required additional hours on a coach, and far too much of our vacation was spent simply getting from one place to another. Converting a river cruise into a bus tour for a significant portion of the schedule dramatically changes the nature and expectations of the holiday. This, combined with daily packing and unpacking clothes, hours of wasted time waiting to check into hotels and wait for tour buses, and the uncertain communication of ongoing schedule changes from tour guides on a daily basis throughout the tour resulted in unexceptional service failure. We did not feel that most of the other alternatives required were remotely comparable to what we had booked. For example, lunch on the Nico ship was disappointing, and there was no air conditioning despite the extremely hot temperatures. The food at the second hotel, a Hilton, was also disappointing. Many meals were buffet-style instead of the sit-down, menu-ordered dining we expected onboard. Food was often barely warm, there was little atmosphere, and at times we had to get up from dinner to get our own drinks.
When we reserved and paid for a river cruise we expected river boat accommodations for the duration of the itinerary. The expectation of a relaxing scenic river cruise, enjoying onboard amenities and sit-down menu ordered food choices did not occur as expected on booking and during the tour itself.
Many other passengers voiced major complaints and were very unhappy with how Gate 1 handled the communication process. Communication throughout the trip was also frustrating. The itinerary seemed to change almost daily, and we often didn't know what was happening next. Our Tour Manager was rarely seen, at times only briefly every few days, and many passengers were frustrated by the lack of direction and communication.
At no time during our adjusted tour schedule, had Gate 1 staff offered any options for compensation, including partial or full cruise credits, or adjusting cruise dates prior to departure.
We are also aware through feedback from a number of other competitor cruise line staff and passengers on similar cruise itineraries as ours (which we had to pass through at various docking points), that all were offered full or partial cruise credits, announced during their cruises (these included AMA, Scenic, Emerald and Viking).
We should mention that our cruise/tour Manager (Matt) and cruise activity Host (Nick) did the best they could to manage and communicate constant unfavorable itinerary changes, however no compensation or credits were offered throughout the excursion, (aside from a 50 euro lunch credit per couple one day).
Given what has occurred, and based on our long-standing commitment to Gate 1 travel we feel that our group (all three couples), should receive at minimum a full credit each from Gate 1 customer service to be used for future travel.
We would appreciate that Gate 1 confirm that our request for a full refund is acceptable as soon as possible. We would like to continue to consider future travel with Gate 1.
We are willing to discuss with more details if required.
Thanks again for your understanding in resolving our concerns.
Claimed loss: refund credit for Cruise cost $3,210.60 per couple
